Had a wonderful time! As an experienced horse rider, I can vouch that the horses were well fed and trained. Our guide Kaitlyn was very patient with the two younger children on our ride, and always gave useful advice. The guide would keep checking back at the group along the trail to make sure everyone was ok. Took pictures for us at the end as well which was nice! I think some of the negative reviews on here mostly have to do with Groupon, which it seems they do not use anymore. Another negative seems to be towards the owner, whom I did not meet, but her employee Kaitlyn was very responsible and knowledgeable! Give them a try, I had a great time! We had a beautiful ride! The horses were nice, very well kept and loved! Don't be put off by the owners seemingly gruff demeanor. I've learned now, after 20 years of living here, that Maine "horse people" generally can have less social politeness and more straight-forward/gruff info delivery than others are used to. She did yell to be heard by the whole group and also did reprimand when teaching, which can be off putting. Bottom line, I think she wants everyone to be safe. I grew up riding horses & have taken many friends on trail rides over the years. When my boyfriend revealed that he had booked a ride for us, I was very excited to share this experience with him. To start, we were the only ones on the ride so I was pleased at the prospect of having some quality time on horseback together. He had never been on a horse before so I anticipated a very beginner pace, however, as mentioned, I've been on many rides & not once have I been on a ride where we literally only walked. I was scolded when I allowed my horse to trot for a few feet! As a teacher myself, I absolutely understand the responsibility of keeping people safe within the realm of fun. Unfortunately the fun took a deep back seat to the authoritarian instruction my boyfriend received. He was a good sport about it but contrary to my hopes of having a nice time together on horseback, we felt awkward talking in between our guide, Chase, who was up front, being micro managed by the owner, bringing up the rear. I want to take a moment to acknowledge that many of the reviews of this place are quite harsh & I don't want to add any unnecessary grief to the owner. We did have a good time, we always do! My wish is to offer some feedback to the owner that when you work with the public, consider that your business may thrive if you offer opportunities for fun. Horseback riding, as mentioned in another review, is not an amusement ride but we do it because it's fun! My opinion is that you need to loosen your own reigns & let the experience happen without trying to control every moment! It's exciting to ride a horse & can truly empower someone, especially beginners, when a little bit of trust is laced into the experience. The trust was never offered to us, therefore growth & progression could not happen & we were never able to relax. Perhaps sharp, constant corrections are needed in some cases but for us, we just wanted a nice little ride together! After the ride, we settled the balance by paying the remainder of what we owed in cash. What we were told was "you've paid $40 for a deposit, $160 cash will cover the rest" so my boyfriend handed the guide an extra $20 on top. We later received an emailed bill that included an additional $12 that supposedly was paid in cash. I am hoping this is not as it seems & that the $12 was not taken from the $20 tip for our guide, Chase, who was ultra sweet! Overall, it's always lovely to be around horses & Liza the dog was a total charmer! Unfortunately, we likely will not be recommending this place or returning soon. I went on two rides on the farm, for a daughter mother get away. The first was beautiful, as we slowly meandered through fields with a young guide, who clearly had safety as a priority, as we had some less experienced riders in the group. The meandering fields were gorgeous. The second ride was with an older guide with a youthful spirit. We had moments of excitement, adventure, and moments of sheer relaxation. I left on an equine high. The ride was so enjoyable, and my daughter felt at ease the entire trip. The areas near the stream were my favorite, and the views were amazing. Unless you are a professional horseback trail rider, don't waste your time or money going here! There are so many negatives to list I almost feel bad writing them, but I think people need to read them before deciding on a place to go for a ride. Ok, starting from the get go. We had a reservation for 2 o'clock and the tour before us didn't get back until 2:30. Not a big deal as we fortunately are a "go with the flow" family and didn't have anything else planned for the day. Despite the prior tour returning late, our real negative experiences began as they were coming back in. One of the horses went off course and started heading to the stable where fresh hay was just set out by a stable hand. Tiffany, owner/tour guide, began yelling instructions to the young rider to get her horse back on track. Not a big deal, however when the child couldn't get her horse back on track, Tiffany's instructions turned to demeaning comments...to a child nonetheless! Ok, so now it's our turn. After the previous group dismounted, the horses were only given a quick drink of water before we mounted them. I was shocked they didn't swap out the horses as an assistant stated that this was going to be their third trip of the day! After we mounted our horses, Tiffany stood in front of us and gave instructions for steering the horses, which were clear and good. Tiffany then began untying the horses and giving instructions to each rider where to put their hands so she could secure the rope to the saddle. When Tiffany wasn't satisfied with our hand position, she scoffed and chastised everyone. And off we finally went...time check...2:55. Well, about 30 seconds in, the chastising and demeaning comments continued. One of the kids horses went "off line" at which point Tiffany began giving instructions to turn the horse. When my petite, timid 11 year old daughter was having trouble, Tiffany began yelling at her and continued chastising her. I honestly wanted to tell her to turn us all around and end the tour, but i didn't want to ruin it for the kids and thought Tiffany would calm down...WRONG!!! Throughout the majority of the tour, Tiffany constantly yelled at us and spoke in such a demeaning manor that it seemed we were an inconvenience to her. We returned to the stable at 3:35. We paid (a good deal of money) for an hour tour, but by my calculation that's only 40 minutes Tiffany! Tiffany is definitely not a people person. She seems too stressed out about the riders and takes it out on them. In my opinion, Tiffany should hire a more personable guide and be behind the scene and worry about paperwork instead. read more

My family went as a group about a week ago. The experience was not good. Likely, part of the problem was the "guide", who obviously was inexperienced and did some stupid things. I'm not an experienced horse person, but it seemed to me that the stirrups were set too long. I could barely stand up in mine. Worse, however, my 7 1/2-year old grandson lost his stirrups fairly quickly, and this lead to a huge problem. I think it would have been less likely for him to have lost his stirrups had they been a bit shorter so that he could comfortably rest his feet in them. They'd also be easier to find were they a bit shorter. But then, the "guide" came over to "fix" things, and her horse spooked the one on which my grandson was sitting and his horse threw him off. Technically, according to the horsey people there, the horse, Cricket, didn't buck my grandson off. But what I saw was that the guide's horse got too close to Cricket, and Cricket reared up with both front feet off the ground, then he dropped his front feet and kicked out his back feet, then reared up his front feet again, at which point my grandson was thrown off. The front feet literally did go up in the air at least twice. In an old Hopalong Cassidy movie, or at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, that would have been considered bucking, albeit much more subdued bucking than Jim Shoulders had to put up with back in the day. The owner claims the horses were just saying, "hi". Personally, I think a 20+-year old horse than can't be trusted not to rear up when another horse gets close should have been sent to the glue factory long ago. Then too, a half decent guide would have not had her horse come up and spook Cricket. There were other issues. My son was put on a horse that couldn't be trusted to be in front of any other horses. So, my son was placed at the end of the line, separated quite a distance from his own son. That's just stupid. I also thought my horse, Dennis, was pretty awful. I'm not a horse person, so perhaps it's just me, but I don't remember any of the horses on the dude ranch I went to as a kid being quite so difficult to guide. He'd veer off the trail, unlike any of the other horses in our group, and I was constantly guiding him back. Then, for no apparent reason, he just stopped. No amount of kicking and tongue clicking would get him going. It seems, that after quite some time of standing in a catatonic state, he felt the call of nature. To his credit, once his business was done, he started ambling, and veering off course, again. I dunnno, I think going on a trail ride might be fun, but if I ever do it again, it won't be with these people. read more

She made our kid feel extremely uncomfortable, to the point that our teen no longer enjoyed the trail ride. To be honest, it was very unprofessional, and our ride leader poor at basic human interaction. She knew we were beginners, and at the end she told me wife, "you should take lessons before you get on a horse." Lessons? This was a beginners trail ride! I had a valid Groupon, purchased 3 rides, got the email confirmation, then a week later, 2 days before my ride, I was told it wasn't valid & they were charging me more money. Their website made a mistake & instead of Tiffany honoring what I already had an email confirmation on, she got mad and cancelled my ride. This was a birthday present for 2 other riders, who are more than upset. The way Tiffany spoke to me was more than unprofessional. I am appalled at her behavior & utter lack of taking responsibility for something that was entirely her mistake. If I could give zero stars, I would. In response to Tiffany-- that is completely inaccurate. Please don't try to twist this. I had a Groupon. I reserved it on your site before expiration date. I picked a date that was offered by Your Own Website. Your site accepted it. A week later you sent a confirmation reminder. Then a day later I get an email about additional charges & contacted you. You agreed your site made a mistake. But instead of honoring it , you cancelled my rides I booked. I have all the correspondences. Groupon is already in the process of revising their relationship with you b/c this is not the first time you've cancelled Groupon Rides. Your website does not say anything specific to "use by" dates . I made a reservation before my expiration date. Your site accepted it. A week later you said it wasn't valid after your own website says it was. That's the truth. There's no in between. You then cancelled my ride without my authorization. & from other reviews I've read, this isn't the first time you've done this. Horrible business practice. & FYI, the time it was refused was b/c I put in 3 people instead of 2 thinking it would just add on the additional fees. So let's be clear here. Great Horses for Advanced/Intermediate riders. I took a 45 minute trail ride and while there was a good deal of walking I was given the perfect horse to match my request and thoroughly enjoyed the trotting/cantering portion of the ride. When I booked my ride I requested to ride english and mentioned that I enjoyed riding big draft horses in the past. The Clydesdale mare I was on fit my request perfectly and was an absolute pleasure to ride - extremely attentive to my every move and request and it really felt like I was in control of the ride. I'd recommend this farm to any intermediate or advanced rider who knows what they're doing and is comfortable enough to do it without instruction. If you're looking for a barn that will set you up on a routine trail horse and send you out on a fast ride through an "advanced" course, then this is not the place for you. If you're an experienced rider looking to ride and connect with the right horse on a short, scenic, and (at times) exciting trek in a backcountry setting, then I would recommend checking out Carousel Farm. read more

This place is a dump. I wanted to leave as soon as I saw the place, but it had taken me over an hour to drive there, so I tried to make the best of it. My horse tried to pull the reins out of my hands for the entire one hour ride. We rode this weekend in a group of about 7 altogether. I have experience riding but the rest of the group had either none or very little. We went on the beginner's ride which included steering instructions in the beginning. I thought that the guide ran through instructions a bit quickly considering most were beginners (that may just be the teacher in me.) However, the horses were very tame and responded well to requests to go, stop, turn, move over, etc. I had Scout who was a perfectly behaved boy! The ride was scenic, part woods, part open field. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend wearing bug-spray as I was getting bitten, even with bug-spray on. Our guide was very pleasant and pointed out different plants along the way. There is no need to bring a phone on the trail as you aren't allowed to take pictures, but your guide will take photos at the end, which was nice. We all enjoyed the ride and it was a good one for beginners. I will definitely be back and I would try a ride that included trotting/cantering if possible! read more

It took me about 2 hours to convince my 7 year old son that a trail ride would be fun and safe. He finally agreed and along with my father, brother, and sister in law we were each paired with a horse and set off. About 3 minutes into the ride my son's foot came out of the stirrup and the "guide" stopped to fix it for him. Somehow, even though she was nominally a professional, she spooked my son's horse who started bucking, (yes bucking!!!) and threw him to the ground. The horse started walking back to the beginning of our ride, so the guide followed and instructed the rest of us to turn around and follow. Unfortunately she had forgotten that the horse I was on (I had been in the back) couldn't handle other horses behind her and would kick, but I was now in the lead. My horse began to get agitated and finally the guide told me to move off to the side because of this horse's nerves. But it goes on! At this point the owner came out and started berating the guide for what she was doing and how she had handled the situation. I was still trapped on my horse while my young son was crying and having an understandable meltdown, he was scared out of his wits. As I finally was allowed to get off the horse the owner came over to my son and I and basically poo-pooed the fact that he'd been bucked off of a horse. This establishment is not only incompetent and unprofessional, but the lack of training of their horses is an actual danger! I would think twice about doing any of their trail rides. Shady business practices I have been attempting to schedule my trail ride with my daughter and two granddaughters for months now. Every time, I've been put off, "trails are suboptimal", "this weekend is full" "try again in a few months" for the Groupon "trail ride for two". I purchased two vouchers X two each for the four of us. Tiffany was quick to obtain the voucher numbers thereby assuring her payment, yet making it impossible to actually have us ride. Are we supposed to clear our calendars for every weekend in hopes that maybe one day out of the several weekend days MAY work for you? why couldn't you work with your customers and try reaching out to us and saying, "Hey, I have (such and such) day open and if the trails are okay, would you like to tentatively book your trail ride?" I most certainly did not wait two months! I called a few times and you, admittedly, "do not like to correspond over the phone". The paper trail works both ways Tiffany. I am requesting a full and complete refund of my $118.00 for services not rendered and "I urge you" to have this full and complete refund to me in two weeks time or I will begin the process of a formal complaint. I'm sure that you've been in business 26 years, though I'm not sure how. That stand alone fact does not mean that you are a good "businessman". Just curious; with your guidelines and weather policy, how it possible to do a "winter trail ride for two"?? Are there 2 days every season that people are able to ride?? Your fine print should state, "this Groupon is a lottery for a chance to ride maybe sometime this season if we are not booked AND if the trails are okay for riding. There has to be enough snow but not too much, no rain, no ice and if you want more than two Groupon vouchers, we will not work with you to assure your trail ride, even though you are giving us TWICE your money/business". "People like me" ARE your business Tiffany! By the way, May is not a winter month and my Groupon will, conveniently, be expired by then. How profitable for you! I guess from a profit margin prospective, You are a savvy businesswoman; as a professional woman myself, it would be great if I did not have to work and got paid, in advance even! Clever! Paid $550 on a Groupon for 4 hours of horse back riding and dinner... We rode for 3 hours and dinner was a stop at the local ice cream stand (Pears)... None of this would be an issue if the price wasn't so high and details were clear (you would assume for that amount if money you're getting at least a decent meal, not chicken fingers)... On the positive side our guide was knowledgable and a very sweet girl (Stephanie) and we had a great time with her and the horses... When we arrived to farm we heard Tiffany yelling at the riders before us who turned out to be small children. It didn't end there, she continued to berate them and the other riders. It was so inappropriate. She was over 30 minutes late which was no problem, the horses were not rested or switched out. When my children mounted she started up almost immediately with our group. She is clearly stressed out and abrupt. She continued to make caustic remarks and chastise our group. It created a very negative toxic environment for our family. We spent a lot of $ on this experience only to be spoken to disrespectfully and leave upset. You can say we weren't listening as you did to your other reviews but I say your delivery was awful. You kept yelling commands at them to a point where they weren't sure what was right or what was wrong. You screamed at them repeatedly in such a way I don't even speak to them! You were even speaking to your own horse the same way. It turns out our daughter's saddle was crooked! I have to praise my children for enduring the trail in a hostile environment created by Tiffany. We have been on several trail rides and never had any problem. I urge you to take these reviews as a way to grow and be successful. I have read your responses and you really could use some self awareness. There is a difference between a strong woman Tiffany and a unprofessional one. A strong women rarely loses her temper and certainly not as easily as you seem to. It's not what you say, it's how you say it..furthermore you should stick to working with animals not people. My girlfriend & I took a 45 min-1hour trail ride on 03/24/17. She had never been on a horse before & I had only rode once many years ago. There was snow on the ground & it was snowing lightly today, which made the backdrop even more beautiful. Tiffany, the owner, was awesome & very accommodating before we went. I had a 2 hour reservation for a private trail ride as a wedding gift for my boyfriend's brother and his fiancé. This was our first horseback riding experience and it was wonderful. Our instructor was Stephanie and she was great, she knew very well what she was doing and told the group what the instructions were. I booked a "girls weekend" 1 hour beach ride for 5 riders one month in advance with Tiffany at Carousel Horse Farm. During each call I mentioned that I lived in Old Orchard Beach and asked if the ride went down to OOB. Perhaps I was not clear that I wanted the ride to go that far but it did not. I spoke to Tiffany each time. The ride was originally scheduled for 11am Saturday Oct 26th because low tide was 10:44am.Tiffany called twice thereafter asking to change the time of the ride and I agreed we were very flexible. The second change in time came with "be there at 11:45AM sharp because we have another event later in the afternoon that we need the horses for. " On Friday Oct 25th I had a call from Tiffany confirming the ride on Saturday an the "11:45AM sharp" start time. Kristen one of the five riders called Tiffany and confirmed the time and also was told "11:45AM sharp". Well we are all professional well traveled business women in our early 50's and we follow directions and we were there at the Scarborough parking lot ten min's early very excited for another "bucket list" activity.At 11:45AM there were no horses. At Noon time I phoned Tiffany to ask where the horses were. We were waiting in the parking lot in Scarborough. . When her team did arrive they were d got to work quickly to saddle up the horses and have us sign the wavers etc.. Now here is the beauty of digital photography.... They opened the gate for the horses to disembark at 12:17PM. Stephanie our guide & her helper, helped us onto our horses', showed us how to hold the reigns and direct the horses. While this was going on, our sixth friend was snapping photos each of us. We were riding through the parking lot onto the beach at 12:37PM all five of us very excited and happy for our adventure. The horses enjoyed he beach and riding in a line and even riding side by side.When we reached the first high-rise condo's Stephanie turned us around to return to the parking lot. I questioned why we were returning so soon and Stephanie said that we needed to get back so they could get to their next event. I tried to explain that I wanted the horses to go past my home in OOB and that I had mentioned this to Tiffany. Stephanie turned us around and headed back to the parking lot. During the ride back I let Stephanie know that we wanted a group photo on the beach with each of us on the horses. Our 6th friend was prepared to take the photo. Stephanie ignored the request and brought us back into the parking lot. I again stopped Stephanie and asked why we could not have a photo on the beach and she indicated that the ride was over and they needed to get to the next event. I immediately let Stephanie and the gentleman with her know that we were not happy. We paid for an hour beach ride and they were more intent on getting to their next venue than to satisfy their commitment to our group of five riders. Again the beauty of digital photography, our friend captured a photo of us exiting the beach at 1:17PM. We had a 40 minute beach ride? The most annoying part of the experience was the focus of Tiffany and her team on getting to the next event rather than focusing on the one they were working with us! One thing I have learned in life is that one needs to make the customer feel like they are the only customer and that they are a valued customer. This did not happen with Tiffany. I called Tiffany a week later to let her know our disappointment she was surprised as her staff had not shared our experience with her. After explaining the situation Tiffany challenged me on the time her team arrived, the time the horses got on to the beach and the time we returned to the parking lot. Tiffany did not attempt to make our group whole by offering any type of reimbursement or gift certificate for a future ride. In my opinion, Tiffany should have just put a gift certificate in the mail with an apology. Instead she did nothing. I found Carousel Horse Farm on Social Media and now I review the experience on YELP. Beware you may not get what you paid for. My message to Tiffany is "Be sure at a minimum your customers get what they pay for and work at making them feel like they are your only customer. Always be professional, listen to your customers feedback, there is always something to be learned. Don't be defensive. Gratitude and honey go a much further in life....." read more

My sisters and I took our mother for a beginner walking ride today and had a great time! We were all a little nervous at first, and because the "leader" was out still with an earlier group we were a little unsure about what to do, but we went and asked someone that we found for information, and he was helpful enough. The earlier group returned and we put helmets on and signed waivers and then a couple of people matched us to horses and gave us a few brief pointers and we were off. The horses were terrific for us beginners...they just walked calmly in a line and gave no difficulty along the way. The trail was the highlight of the experience though. We went through shaded forests and beautiful meadows with views of mountains in the background. We were out for a little bit longer than we had anticipated, which was nice. I felt that overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I'd recommend it! read more
