Chip Alley aka Caroline Street is the irresistible magnet towards which you are drunkenly pulled after a night out. Home to Dorothy's and Tony's and several other fish and chip kabab superstores, this is just the ticket - the place that'll suck up the booze and make you feel just that little bit better. Apart from a nasty experience several years ago cycling down Caroline Street and slipping in the grease of last nights chip fat and other things I wouldn't like to think about, Chip Alley has served me well. It's provided me with some fantastic end of the night entertainment - drunken boys showing off, girls showing everything and me all the while watching the spectacle whilst munching through some first class chips like popcorn at a cinema. Chip Alley is the obligatory happy ending after an evening of bar-hopping debauchery. I feel for those guys manning their stations, I really do. On any given weekend night, it's more like Carnage Alley, but that's part of its charm, I think. The crowds descend on Caroline Street, with the fervour reserved more for new club launch instead of salty takeaway stodge. A word of advice: Like Johana said, watch out for the occasional layer of chip fat (or vomit, or worse) on the ground - it's like manoeuvring on a Slip 'n Slide in stilettos. In any case, it is really convenient to have a row of chip and kebab shops confined to one area; some are better than others, so it's just a matter of trying them all out to see which one is your favourite. Me, I'm a McDonald's girl myself, but for many of Cardiff's residents, nothing beats the post-evening munchies like a takeaway from Chip Alley. read more

When you think of Cardiff, the landmarks that come to mind are probably the Millennium stadium, Cardiff Castle and more recently the Millennium Centre (the golden snail). Let me add one more to that list - Chippy Alley. Residing just off St Marry Street (not the Catle end) Caroline Street is greasy freeway of chip shops, kebab houses and southern fried chicken outlets all vying for business from hundreds of drunk revelers come the end of a Friday or Saturday night. As you can imagine its not a pretty place, picture if you will skating on a bed of grease, chip packets and plastic cartoons whislt watching all manner of drunkens argue, snog and and play wrestle whilst you shove you gravy, jumbo sausage and chips into you gob. It's not high culture but a rights of passage for any night lifer in Cardiff. read more

During a recent visit to Cardiff, I was told I wouldn't have truely had a Cardiff experience unless I ended my evening in Chip Alley. We hit the street at 2 am and Chip Alley was right. There was more than half a dozen shops with various chips on offer but which were the best? After a few disagreements from my Welsh hosts, it was decided that the two best shops for chips were Dorothy's and 6 Fingers (it's actually called Capital Takeaway but supposedly the owner/ a worker has 6 fingers on one hand, hence the nickname). In a little bout of midnight fun we called forth a chip off. So first up is Dorothy's. Dorothy's has doors on either side with two counters so that double the people can enjoy their chips on offer. One of our group got chips with cheese and mayo. As I can't eat cheese, I had to have one from the bottom of the pile. I found them to be quite soft and a bit mealy in texture on the inside. We all tried one without cheese and the verdict was: they're OK. Next up...Six Fingers. The chips were hot and crisp but not too hot so no tongues or mouth roofs were harmed in the conduction of this chip off. The insides were cooked to perfection and still had a fluffy inside. They did have a touch of salt and vinegar on them so there were comments that it would make them taste better. As I was more convinced by the texture than the taste, we delegated Jamie to have a chip from each with the addition of some cheese since Dorothy's was covered in the stuff. Jamie's verdict came back resoundingly in favour of Six Fingers. Our true Dorothy's fan didn't want to admit it, but Six Fingers did make the superior chip. She is convinced that it was a one off but for my Cardiff experience, Six Fingers wins the 1st annual Cardiff Chip Off. read more

After a night out what better to have to try and soak up some of that alcohol than something battered and dripping with grease! Chip Shop alley is the mother of all alleys! As the pubs ring that final bell party goers descend here like a herd of under fed elephants. The alley comprises itself of chip shop after chip shop after chip shop! If you don't like the look of one... don't panic..... just walk on by to the next. Whether you fancy traditional fish and chips or whether you are in the mood for a battered sausage there is not better place to go than here! I am not promising the food to be worthy of a Michelin star but it is hot and it will fill a hole! For some reason cheesy chips is a favourite in Cardiff so if you cant decide what to choose follow the crowd and get yourself a portion of these little chappies! read more

There is certainly something decidedly delicious about 'Chippy Lane', and it's certainly not the food. No, it's that at a certain point in the early hours Chippy Lane sums up the whole mentality of a good night out in town. You get the broken heels, you get the drunken arguments, you get newly made couples kissing as their friends nick their fries and, of course, you witness in full the slightly baffling south-east Wales appreciation of curry and chips. This is a place with an unquestionable spirit. It's nothing less than iconic and, for that reason, it comes as no surprise that the place was featured in Vogue last December. But don't bother jotting it down as a destination. You will end up here, like it or not. Rumour has it they have a big electro-magnet they switch on at around half two in the morning which pulls you in by the loose change in your pocket or clutch bag. Once known only for its grease-lined streets and ever-popular chip shops, Caroline Street is no longer the scruffy 'Chippy Alley' it once was. It is, however, still home to some of the city's very best late-night chip shops - and inevitably gets a bit messy in the early hours... Despite the road's new clean-cut image, offering one of the two entrances into the smart Brewery Quarter area of the city centre, Caroline Street is still best known for Tony's Fish & Chip Bar and Dorothy's - two classic, well-established city centre chippies. It's one of the busiest areas of town when the clubs shut and punters need to soak up some of their beer with a bag of chips. Despite lengthy queues at this time of night, it doesn't usually take long to get served because these are slick operations - and once you're done there, it's not far from Caroline Street to the taxi rank on St Mary Street for your ride home. read more

Caroline Street, Chippy Lane, Chippy Alley, whatever name you have for it you'll inevitable end up here after a night out in Cardiff's city centre. It's lucky then that there are plenty of take-aways to choose from, and luckier still that there's a cashpoint here if you've got the munchies without the monies. Dorothy's and Tony's are the two most popular chippys here but there are plenty of them and they all sell standard post-lash food at good prices so everyone's catered for. Regeneration of the upper end of Chippy Lane may have given the area a bit of a facelift (the Hayes is at that end and that's now one of the nicest pedestrian streets I know of), but the Lane itself still has quite a reputation for late night antics. On busy nights lots of people end up here but there's crowd control if it's ever needed so it's not dangerous. Even so I wouldn't advise coming here late at night if you're sober; there are sights to see on Chippy Lane that you need a certain level of inebriation to cope with (but if you are drunk then you'll probably love it!). Also avoid it on the morning after as it's often quite a state, but Cardiff Council's fleet of street cleaners can normally make it spotless again by noon. Whoever you are and wherever you've been, if you haven't ended a night at Chippy Lane then you're really missing out on a traditional Cardiff experience so get thyself down there after your next night in Walkabout and see it for yourself. read more

This is pretty much an institution when it comes to a night out in Cardiff. Despite the new debate about whether it is to be referred to as Chippy Lane or Chippy Alley (although, it has been and always will be Chippy Lane, obviously) it is at once exactly and nothing like you'd expect. You will see drunks stumbling towards somewhere to fulfil their current and only desire for food at one of the chippies along the road. There is a certain comradory and understanding between those down Chippy Lane, but you've also got to remember that this is the centre of Cardiff and most of these people are drunk, so it's probably not wise to try and be too witty or sarcastic about anything much with a stranger. Saying that, whilst there might be a fight on nearby St. Mary's Street between a couple of idiots, once a drunk has found their food it's quite hard to distract them from that and the mood tends to be fairly subdued. read more

What can I say about Caroline Street...mmm.... Well 'chippy alley' as its formally known as is the place you realise your friend is paralytic, its a place where money is lost and found and its the home of chicken off the bone curry and chips. A little jewel of a delight in a bustling city. Caroline street also plays home to the start of relationships, the end of relationships, of one night stands and the odd tussle over whether you've got a fish cake or a mushy pea fritter. All in all its a drunken must! The one big problem with Caroline street is that in 2003 the whole brewery quarter (completely opposite) got revamped which meant new paving for chippy alley, which when mixed with a little drizzle and the sick/fat/rubbish from a a busy evening makes it a death trap for both heels and flats, especially new shoes. Whooosh. So be careful. I cant go into detail about each and every take away because quite frankly I can never remember which one I've been in! I always head to the one with the less of a queue, probably not the wisest move really but hey, when your drunk and hungry you'll eat anything. I have one friend in particular that refuses to buy food in Caroline Street, instead she wanders round chatting people up for a bit of their sausage in batter or curry. Clever really. If your visiting the city you really need to at least wander down Caroline Street just to say you've been there. Even the Welsh internationals and Miss Charlotte Church herself can sometimes be spotted down there! So if its good enough fro the voice of an angel, its good enough for moi! read more

Chippie Alley has become such a colloquialism for this city centre takeaway Mecca that even many long-time Cardiff residents would struggle to recall its real name: Caroline Street. Bringing together the chain pub boozers, post-dance club revellers, metal kids from the nearby Club Metropolitan and even - well, especially - the fall-over-drunk casualties into one messy mass, moderate inebriation is almost an entrance requirement come weekend early hours. Wander in sober and you might have a screaming breakdown. A thoroughfare from shopping hub The Hayes to chaos-strewn main drinking drag St Mary Street, on match days at the Millennium Stadium the rows of greasy eateries are also as full to bursting as the overflowing bins spilling polystyrene and half-eaten burgers everywhere. With a few exceptions - fish and chip stalwarts Dorothy's being the prime one - you may as well search for culinary fulfilment at McDonald's. But that knowledge won't stop your zombified, inevitable 2am crawl to Caroline Street on most drunken nights out in Cardiff city centre. read more

well the chip shop i goto is at the bottom end of st mary street i go there as it by far beats all the competion in caroline street plus u can avoid all the heavy queing and hussle and bussle of people on route its called the chippy and the taste on them is very very nice chips light and golden not to overcooked and thats my chippy after a night on the town. read more
