Calabash Caribbean Grill - Spinach patty...so flavorful

Location is Bush River Rd same shopping center as Roses…read more We've been here quite a few times for me it's mainly the Patti and coco bread. They are priced slightly lower than Island Grill. I believe variety includes chicken, beef, spinach but not certain. My wife gets the curry goat and oxtail plates, the portions of meat and rice is large. The plantains are only two and cabbage is smaller than rice. I think the meat is probably the closest tasting it can get to the real thing. No Jamaican restaurant I visited in America can get the jerk chicken taste quite the way it tastes in Jamaica. The rice and peas don't have much coconut taste if any but they give a large portion. Plantain are good, our cabbage last visit was mushy not their best work as I don't remember having this complaint before. We haven't tried Escovitch or veggie plate here. There is a small section of spice bun, biscuits, other dry goods and freezer drinks. Sparse indoor seating, no bar, mainly pick up orders. Interior decoration features some geographical illustrations, pics, possibly hand crafted traditional pieces (not for sale), and boombox music. Prices are high for plates, perhaps that reflects portion sizes. Employee/customer relations is polite. Quick option of the few in Columbia on Irmo side.

To be transparent, I ordered via DoorDash with low expectations for some reason. I ordered the jerk…read morechicken, rice and peas, steamed vegetables, and macaroni and cheese. The plate was full. So, the portion size was great. Again, I wasn't expecting much. I got some of everything off of the plate just to taste that night and ended up returning for more. It was so good. The jerk chicken was sauce-based & had the perfect flavor combination. The macaroni and cheese was delicious. The flavor was there, and the noodles were not overcooked. The steamed vegetables and the rice and peas were all good as well. It was a pleasant surprise. My husband tasted the plate and talked about how tasty the food was; he even said it was so good he wanted to order from them again. I wish I would have snapped a picture.

I had been on the search for some authentic Jamaican food and saw so many mixed reviews out there…read moreand opted to go check out Reggae Grill and they did not disappoint! It's a small establishment but those tend to be the best. It's a no frills aesthetic both inside and out. Very unassuming but when I tell you this is some of the best Jamaican food I've had in a LONG time I'm not lying. The service was amazing and the team is support friendly. The brown stew chicken was not only packed with flavor but it was fall off the bone tender. The rice and peas were cooked perfectly and the brown stew gravy on top was AMAZING! all in all i've been back twice in three days...it's just THAT good!

I have never waited as long as they take to put these meals together. They did come out with an order but was completely wrong. My impression of the establishment is a small cafe with a few Jamaican flags, wording, and music camouflaged up to attract the tourists. There are no Jamaicans taking order, the menu is always on the TV. There is an attached side to cafe with 1 pool table, another bar, and stage. Upon finally receiving our orders albeit after an hour wait the food was presented well but no damn way wait for amount served. We have come to expect that no one here in America can give it the jerk taste and this was no different. Yes it is fall off bone but only jerk seasoning not the taste cooked in. It is serviceable as far as American standards. The curry chicken was way salty and the side of rice peas was very small as compared to me I got very large portion rice. The food was okay but as long as we waited I was ready to get refund and leave. If you want horrible service come here but I will not again.

You park and get out order at the window and go back to the window when your food is ready. My husband has been sent in and I thought this would be a good treat for Good Friday to have some food that reminds him a bit of his home. We ordered curry goat and oxtails with rice and peas mac & cheese and plantains. I ordered rice with mac & cheese, plantains and okra. I did enjoy the okra, it was cooked really well. It also tasted pretty good. The mac & cheese was good, I wish for a slight more bite with the cheese so on a scale of five I'd give it a four out of five. The portion size was OK for me, but not for my husband who is 64 and 260 pounds. He felt the goat was pretty good, but the oxtail not so much. He liked the rice and peas, but wish there were more peas. We could count the peas in his rice and in my rice and still have fingers left. What we're used to is a good ratio, rice and peas. I had food from here before and really enjoyed it. We also received the pineapple and ginger juice and the sorrel and we love them both. Those were made really well.

Very disappointed with the food we received…read more The small jerk chicken plate was just that, small. I received three of the tiniest and dry pieces. The jerk chicken appeared to be overcooked or old. The plate came with 3 sides. So I chose plantains, cabbage, and green beans. The plantains were the worse I've had, the cabbage was okay and the green beans were flavorless. I would give this entire meal 4/10. The large oxtail plate was basic. It also came with 3 sides; macaroni, white rice, and cabbage. Definitely the least enjoyable oxtails we've tried in the area. The macaroni needed salt and the oxtails were tough.
