I usually go to Carniceria Sepulveda but decided to try this Ponderosa location. The place looks very clean, you notice that from the moment you walk in. They have a lot of Mexican candy and they have a bakery inside. I was going to buy meat for me to grill but then I saw that they serve hot food so I decided to try that instead of grilling. I ordered two burritos de asada con todo and two carne asada tacos. To muy disappointment, I saw the guy preparing my food sneeze into his appron, he didn't wash his hands. He was cleaning surfaces with a rag then proceeded to continue to prepare the food without changing his gloves. That right there made me feel grossed out. I didn't say anything and still decided to give the food a try. It was not good. We had to throw away more than half our burritos. Cleanliness is important when food handling for me. Carniceria Ponderosa Panaderia (bakery & cafe) is a Mexican grocery market and partial cafe with two locations in North Phoenix. I went to the location on Bell Rd that is close to Glendale. Inside you will find dry goods, beverages, a small amount of produce, lots of meat counters that look good with reasonable pricing. They also offer to cook certain things for you for free. In the grocery I scored the very hard to find CHILTEPIN peppers that give very good flavors and heat to food and they were cheap too! We also tried the Charcoal Grill and Kitchen for tacos. They also offer burros, quesadillas, and tortas. The person working there didn't speak English but the cashier/manager stepped in quickly and is bi-lingual and told the worker the order.They were busy and the order took a little time. When your order is ready they offer to top up your tacos Chipotle style. Then you pay the cashier in the middle of the place. You then either take out or sit at the counter by the cashier. Between us we tried the birria quesco taco, carne asada, pollo asada, beef barbacoa, and carnitas. The street sized tacos came double shelled and double packed......They were so packed that they were almost more like full size tacos. Everything was very seasoned and both salsas had heat and spice. Our mutual favorites were the barbacoa and the pollo asada. The street size tacos only cost around two dollars each. It can be a great value shopping or eating here. read more

We discovered this place a month or two ago after a friend recommended it and we absolutely love it. They grill up chicken and carne asada and have a special which is 2lbs of meat, grilled onions and jalapeños in a packet, rice, and beans. The chicken might not come with either the rice or the beans, one of the two I just don't remember which. Each of these is under $20 with the carne being about a dollar more than the pollo. The flavor of both types of meat is really good, we ordered it for tacos at my son's graduation party, got it a week later just to have for dinners, got it for Father's Day Dinner and I'm about to go back today! You get multiple meals out of this so if you are thinking $20 dollars is a lot, we eat off of it all week. We'll buy tortillas there and they have a selection of salsas which we haven't tried, but we have bought their pico de gallo and chopped onions and cilantro. Their guacamole is ok, it isn't traditional guac, it is thinner and doesn't brown but adds to the flavor of the tacos. I rated this place 5 stars because the meat is that good. The only 2 things we don't like there are the refried beans and the way they package the onions and jalapeños. The beans just didn't have great flavor and they package the onions and jalapeños in tin foil so the juice inevitably leaks all over the place. The bonus about this place is they are bilingual, so I can practice my Spanish while I'm there but always drop back to English when I can't find the right words. I've walked through the rest of the store and they have a small selection of groceries that you'd expect to find in a carneceria. If you are looking for great food at a reasonable price and live anywhere near 35th Avenue and Bell, I'd highly recommend them. read more
