I've now been in here drunk and sober, so I think I'm now able to give a balanced view of this pub!
Steaming, this place is amazing. It's stupidly cheap for a pub in and around the city centre/West End - a pint of cider and a can of diet coke came in at less than £4! It's one of those old-school pubs that's dominated by the bar area, but there are some decent booths and little rooms if your sub crawl team fancies a wee seat. It definitely has a local pub feel, which is pretty rare in that area - you get the feeling that there is a die-hard crowd of regulars that come here a lot. It's just the kind of pub you need if you're doing the subcrawl and have just come through the main bit of the West End - the combination of cheaper booze and a more relaxed atmosphere make it a refreshing change as you move back into the city centre.
Come in sober, and it loses a star. It's difficult to put a finger on why, but I suppose you maybe become a little too critical, noticing the signs for the loose glass in the main door and other little bits and bobs that mean that you maybe wouldn't purposefully make your way there for a drink, but would mean that you would quite happily stop off for a wee drink if you were in the area. If I lived around there I'd definitely stop in for a drink on a regular occurrence. If you're in the area and fancy an unpretentious and reasonably priced pint then the Canarvon is the place to go. read more
