A little overpriced for the proportions. The fried ravioli was $11, but only came with 6 pieces. And it didn't taste homemade. The salmon was bland as well as the pasta I ordered on the side. My wife and I love eating at this great cafe! I love their Haddock sandwich with steamed veggies ( like I never had before) I stopped getting fries and now get the steamed veggies with my delicious hamburger or wonderful beef sandwich!!!! The covered patio is surrounded by the parking lot, but you don't notice because it's big and there are lots of people. We came for lunch, and took leftovers home. The interior is nicely decorated with an Italian theme. The waitresses are patient and helpful explaining the items. The menu has something for everyone, and the pastas were delicious. Most items cost about $9.99. We had the stuffed banana peppers that were delicious and not hot. The eggplant platter was plentiful for one or to share. The Caprese salad was good with lots of tomato slices. Meatballs were very good. Three of us had the Fried egg and Bologna sandwich. Was big with lots of melted white cheese. So one of the biggest joys of going to an Italian restaurant is the wedding soup. So I ordered the wedding soup. It was a travesty. There were to sprigs of greens floating around a bowl of chicken broth. There was maybe a meatball. Point is it was terrible and for what this place is charging for a bowl of soup they could have added some actual food to the broth: little meatballs, a lot of greens (a lot not those two leaves this place had floating around) and some chicken... where was the MEAT??? A charming restaurant with fantastic food. They feature Italian meals with a very good pasta sauce, and also have a nice selection of steaks, chops, seafood, salads, and sandwiches. The interior seating area is cozy and offers a nice ambiance. There is also outdoor seating on the patio. There is also a full bar with plenty of seating inside. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Our server on this visit was Laura, and she was pleasant and funny! We dined with another couple, who are good friends. We saw that one of the special meals featured this evening was the Salisbury Steak and smashed potatoes. Both my friend and I opted for this and it was a great choice! It was served with a nice salad. The three portions of steak was prepared expertly and the gravy on the steak and mashed potatoes was outstanding. My wife selected the Chicken and Greens, which she loves at Carmella's. The other young lady chose the Eggplant Parmesan, which she enjoyed. Our dinners came with a fresh baked sliced loaf of bread which was delicious. Carmella's Cafe is a real gem of a restaurant and I recommend it. My favorite is their grilled chicken salad with the homemade Italian dressing. The staff were friendly, but I was disappointed in the food. The salad that came with the entree was all iceberg lettuce except for 2 small bits of mixed greens. The house Italian dressing was not very flavorful, and with this being an Italian restaurant, I expected it to be much better. I ordered the haddock francaise. The sauce was very runny...as in the consistency of water. I personally prefer a thick, rich francaise sauce. The server recommended rice pilaf for the side. I wanted mixed vegetables, but when I asked what kind of veggies were in the grilled vegetables, I was told zucchini and squash, which are among my least favorite vegetables. So, I took the servers recommendation of rice pilaf. The rice pilaf was very bland. They didn't add anything to give it flavor. I've had rice pilaf elsewhere that was so tasty, it was actually better than the meat it accompanied. When I eat out at a restaurant, I expect the food to have lots of flavor, and I expect it to be better than I would make at home. Not the case here. read more

Quaint local cafe with friendly service. I tried this restaurant with the family and had the chicken salad, which was a plentiful size with good taste. The kiddos had a regular size create-your-own pasta: penne, chicken & Alfredo that was pretty good. The staff was even nice enough to spit the dish into two smaller sizes, prior to bring it to the table, since they shared a regular generously portioned dish. My friend took me to Carmella's for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved it so much I went back the other day. The waitresses are sweet and attentive and the food is great for the price. My personal favorite is definitely their Caeser salad with grilled steak. Best Caeser dressing I've ever had! I have wanted to try Carmella's out for some time. Liked the reviews they where receiving. So Last night, July 3rd, got there about 6:20 pm. Was instantly seated at a table for two since I'm a little big for booths. Took our drink order, full menu, specials for the day menu and wine list upon seating. Took a little while for our server to show up, but we needed the time to review the dinner options. I ordered Italian Greens as an appetizer. They were great! A little pricey for the amount you get, but they were great. Four pieces (2 slices) of bread from the bread shop next door, which the waitress kept stressing (okay I'm a little slow sometimes, and didn't figure it out till I am writing this review that she was advertising their business), and what I believe is a small bowl of olive oil, to dip the bread in. I guess this was there version of pesto. Absolutely NO flavor in either the bread or pesto. Being that my wife is 100% Italian, we usually shy away from ordering pasta out. The pasta options were "build your own", where you pick the type of pasta, type of meat and what type of sauce you wanted, all for $11.99. But half the options had an "up charge", with no listing of how much the up charges were. This definitely turned us away from trying the pasta. Decided on a 8 oz burger, cooked to order. Included lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and a side. Cheese $0.50 extra, about average. Since penne was their days side special, we decided to go with it since it would give us a sample of their pasta sauce. The burgers were very good. The pickle spear was of good deli quality. In regards to the penne, or I should say their house sauce. Now we live in an area where there a lot of good Italian restaurants to choose from, but the sauce at Carmella's can hardly be considered a good Italian red sauce. If you were to take a can of tomato soup and pour it over the penne, you would have a more flavorful sauce. It was just bland. Needless to say, we will not be going back again. read more

We've been driving by Carmella's for two years but hadn't visited yet so when my hairdresser recommended them, we put them on our "try it" list. We went on a rainy Tuesday night so we were surprised to find the parking lot full but it turns out they had two large groups there for holiday parties. Carmella's is much smaller than I expected but has a nice vibe with a bar and a few booths on one side and more booths and tables on the other. We started with the "kagoots" which is pan fried zucchini slices that were topped with an egg (I know it sounds odd but the server recommended the egg and it was really tasty). This was accompanies by good crusty bread and olive oil dipping sauce. From there I had the shrimp and pasta, my husband had Chicken Victoria. Both were very good. He got risotto as his side so I was able to try it. I've not been a big fan of the risotto at other Yo-town restaurants so was pleasantly surprised by this one. They have "chicken and risotto" on the menu so that'll be my choice next visit. read more

Youngstown is full of Italians, people loving Italian food, and Carmella's Café not only reenforces this, but adds a new dimension to classy-but-casual Italian dining in the region. The service was wonderful; we found out how much of a family business this is from our waitress/wife of chef/granddaughter of Carmella herself. And with the family business idea comes its values - quality food and ingredients, and local collaboration, such as the Bread Chef next door supplying the bread basket. Highlights of the meal - three homemade vinaigrette options available for the well put-together side salad (none of that pre-shredded cheese on a bed of iceberg nonsense). All three of our meals were very different and very tasty - one member of our group proclaimed the linguini + clams to be the best she has EVER experienced. I've gotten two meals so far out of my tortellini, with some still remaining - a very hearty portion. Also, while I had my heart set on making room for some delicious tiramisu, I was apprehensive to try the 'Lovecake' I believe it is called. While it is no substitute for tiramisu enthusiasts, this "cousin of tiramisu" is a nice dessert option that reenforces the café's commitment to quality dining. Great little family-run Italian restaurant. I was given a gift card by my buddy Carlo, and Shell and I gave it a go. What a pleasant surprise!! Forget Olive Garden and those other franchises, these places are where the good food is at. The calamari appetizer was killer, and the italian bread with the oil was delish. The sauteed shrimp with pasta was to-die-for, served with spinach, diced tomatoes and topped with feta cheese...yummmm!! There's no way you leave here hungry, the portions are more than ample. Everything was fantastic. We walked in and it was very busy but we were still sat promptly. They them came and got our drink orders right away even though they were extremely busy and short staffed. The fried calamari was amazing. I had the chicken parmigiana which was cooked to perfection. I loved the house sauce and pasta as well. My girlfriend had grilled chicken penne pasta with Alfredo sauce which was also fantastic. I highly recommend this place and we will definitely be going back the next time we are in town. read more

Not the same place it used to be. My wife and I ate there recently and the food is not as good as in their early years. When we checked our bank statement it showed that there were 2 charges pending. We contacted the bank and they told us that they were showing 3 back-to-back card swipes at this restaurant on the same night. The first swipe was legit and was for the food plus the tip. The second swipe was only for the food and the third was only for the tip. We asked the bank to dispute the 2nd and 3rd swipes and not process them. The bank said they can track this because every swipe generates a unique electronic fingerprint. That's how they know the card was swiped and that the bogus transactions were not entered manually. The representative we contacted at this restaurant said that this was a bank error and that it was impossible for the card to be swiped so many times. The bank said they are mistaken. Apparently they have a dishonest employ. read more
