After a long morning we decided to stop at Carmela's, which is the new name for Shelley's Cafe, for something for lunch. I was so pleased to have a local place for my favorite Spanish-American food, as well as some regular American dishes. Hubby ordered breakfast and I ordered a Caribbean lunch - Pernil (roast pork) with rice and peas, plus a side order of tostones (fried plantains). This is their Tuesday special, and it was delicious bringing back memories of a dear friend's mother who would cook the same food at her NJ bodega. I finished my lunch and couldn't eat another bite, even though homemade flan is available. Next time, which will be very soon! read more

I hate to write this cause I really think they are trying but the food took forever! I ordered an order of biscuits and gravy and husband got an omelette. I swear we waited for over half an hour. The only thing that made me feel better was other customers looking around too with no food. read more

Service was so slowwww....only one server but we know How hard it is to get good, if any, wait staff. Ordered two chicken soups as starters, a Greek Gyro and a Cuban sandwich. Server came back 15 mins (!!) later saying no more soup! We said ok just bring entree. And then 20 mins later she brought out the Cuban with crushed potato chips on side. I ordered plaintains! She said no more plaintains, so they substituted the chips! Husbands "gyro" was some thin, over cooked, little square pieces of lamb (not sure!) and on top was chopped lettuce and tomato. Spread over a pita. Worst gyro ever, not even close to being a gyro! New owners are from Dominican and other caribbean islands and should stick with what they know! (Or travel to Cuba and Greece and learn the real deal.) Sorry, no stars here for Carmela's. read more

I used to eat there every morning. the Sign changed, the normal waitress changed, and the price went to around 14.00 plus tip for my normal breakfast. The attitude of the new waitress is rude and argumentative. she refuses to relay Your instructions to the cook and you get it however she thinks you should like it. I know eat breakfast down on the water and they only charge me about half of their price and they are super nice. The food is just as good down on the water as well. I don't mind spending 20 bucks for breakfast, but it's not a very sensible thing to do everyday when I can have the same thing for a little over half of that and enjoy my breakfast on the water With smiling people. read more

Very good food did take a little time to serve the food but was worth it. I'll be recommending to other people because the food is also good price. Sometimes people spend about $7 and up in a fast food place and that food is mediocre quality. In this restaurant you spend that or a little more for great food and service.... read more

We did a takeout lunch last week and will be again soon. The Cuban sandwiches were great and a garlic shrimp dinner was perfect. Also loved empanadas and black beans. Order was complete and hot and on time. thanks. read more

Disappointing. Had Chicarrone Polla chicken was ok, nothing special. Black beans had some kind of spice or herb that ruined them.. maybe my palate not accustomed to this kind of cuisine. HUGE pile of rice... I'm not a fan of rice in general. And then smashed plantains.. completely flavorless. $8.99 and the best part of the meal was the ice tea. Sad statement that I told my wife I'll make a sandwich when I get home. read more

We were hungry and decided to check this place out. The waitress was very friendly and expedient in her services. While we were waiting for our food we had asked our server to turn up the TV a little so we could better hear what was being said. She was quick to oblige our request. Everything was great, but when our food started coming up, my breakfast was brought out but my wifes breakfast wasn't. I couldn't make out what was being said in the kitchen, but there was obviously a problem. The waitress apologized for the delay. My wifes breakfast was finally brought out, the waitress apologized again and all was good. While we were eating our breakfast, some blonde haired woman bursts from the kitchen demanding the server turn down the TV or she was going to climb up there herself and unplug it. I'm not sure this woman was capable of climbing up there herself without forcing us to witness an incident we were not prepared to see. It was very embarrassing to watch this and I felt bad for the waitress. We ate as fast as we could and got out the H, E, double hockey stick out of there. Service was great, food was good, but the jerry springer incident could have been axed from the show. read more
