Only have experience selling a car here, not buying. I'm sure they're two different experiences. Emily E was so kind and QUICK. We had brought the wrong type of document to verify the title and my wife's maiden name and she told us what we needed and where we could get it. When we came back a few days later she got right to it and got us in and out in about a half hour to an hour. Our online appraisal matched what they offered in person, always a plus, especially since this is a gripe people have, though I think people are overestimating what they actually have.. Emily was very friendly and knowledgeable, the other staff seemed very relaxed and approachable, as if the team actually enjoys working with eachother. read more

DO NOT BUY FROM CARMAX -- WARNING: Title and Registration Problems & for Fellow Military Families I purchased a 2024 Ford Explorer XLT from CarMax in JUNE. CarMax failed to properly handle the title and registration. My husband is active-duty Air Force, and we completed a PCS in August 2026. Before the move, I was told by CarMax that my plates would be shipped to our new home in August in Dayton, Ohio. When we arrived, the plates still had not arrived. After many calls, repeated follow-ups, and involvement from CarMax Customer Relations, I eventually learned that CarMax could not register the vehicle and offered me a branded title. In SEPTEMBER 2026, CarMax found me a substitute vehicle. I spoke with USAA and was advised that I could substitute the vehicle on my existing loan rather than taking out an entirely new loan. I provided this information to CarMax in great detail. Instead, after CarMax bought my original vehicle back, they told me they could not provide the documentation needed. As a result of this situation, I have incurred additional costs and financial consequences, including paying for additional temporary tags after the original tags expired, made a $600 car payment and paying interest on a vehicle I wasn't able to keep, having my credit impacted by multiple loan inquiries within a short period, and received a higher interest rate on the new loan. Customer Relations is aware of the situation but has not contacted me regarding my concerns. read more

Wish I could give it 0 stars. Offer $1,800 for an older veh, it's fine, it's an extra we had inherited. Read the reviews before going and still went... Final offer they gave after an 'inspection' was $500... For a fully functional and pristine inside and outside car. It's older, we're not asking for a lot, 13 years old with 99k miles and not even worth the parts I guess? $500 is if it is inoperative junk, be so for real. Skip and find a different service. EDIT: I went with Carvana the very next day, they actually stand on the online offer they give you. Just be honest about the car condition. read more

Absolute scam artists. Went here to sell a vehicle after receiving an offer from them. They gave me the run around and refused to honor the offer, offering considerably less. Be careful who you talk to. We walked in to an empty showroom. There were three sales people standing around doing nothing. We approached the one at the main desk. She basically told us she was too busy to talk to us and that we were welcome to go look at the unlocked cars in the lot and come back in when we found something we wanted to test drive.. We found a couple nice cars and walked back into the showroom. I saw that the woman who had barely greeted us was busy with another customer. So we tried to talk to somebody else. They wouldn't talk to us. Apparently barely saying hello to usestablished the first sales person as owning us. "But she's in the middle of a sale. We're supposed to stand around and wait for a half hour for her to finish this deal?" Yup. Despite having two sales been sitting on their hands doing nothing we were supposed to stand around and wait for God knows how long for this woman to complete the sale with another customer. I told them that wasn't going to happen. Apparently they don't care that much. Went to Wagner Subaru and bought the same car for about $2000 less. I suppose I should thank them. Idiots. read more

I've always had good service and hassle free car shopping here or any dealer. My only knock is the car they gave us was dirty even after they said they clean it. They did a really poor job cleaning. They also said they'd ozone it because of the faint smoke smell and they didn't. They also do pretty close to Kelly Blue Book for selling your car. Overall, great experience. read more

I had a 2013 Ford Explorer that I was making payments on "long story". I decided to stop in for a quote to sell it to see how close I could get to paying the loan off. I walked in, without an appointment, not realizing how busy they would be. Their appointment board was full but they told me not to worry and they would get me in as soon as they could. They took my name and number and we walked around the car lot while we waited. We ended up waiting approximately 30 minutes which wasn't bad at all. Jay got a bit of information from me and said it would take approximately another 30 minutes for the appraisal to be completed. Once completed we sat back at the desk and it took only a minute to go over the paperwork. I was not getting my hopes up but was extremely excited when their offer exceeded the amount I needed to be free and clear from the car. The offer is good for seven days if you'd like to shop around but I immediately accepted and was sent back to the paperwork area where they cut a check and sent me on my way. read more

Loved it. This is the 3rd car we have bought from them. Dealt with Jay very professional constantly asking questions to get the right car and he was ready with the app as we looked at cars in the lot. If he didn't know it out right he would check and answer any and all questions. Not a fan of buying cars and dealing with financing but they make it easy and up front. The last 2 cars we bought the first we sold at 248,000 miles after having for 6 years and running the wheels off. Was still running just wanted a smaller car less kids. Currently we have a car that has 135,000 miles and running strong had it for 8 years and needed a second bigger car for grandkids this time. I have no doubt this car will last as long. They are will be my go to for personal vehicles. read more

Don't buy from here. I bought a 2013 Escape in June that has already had to go back for repairs twice. Also, they sold the car at 140% value, meaning i was denied refinancing due to it being above the 120% threshold most credit unions use. I learned a hard lesson from this horrible purchase- one I won't make again. Save yourself the hassle and headache and go somewhere else. No negotiation tactics are a scam because they can sell the car for whatever they want. Seriously, I'll never buy from carmax again. Listen and learn from my mistake. read more

Buckle up. Sat. Nov. 2, 19 my guy and I drove 1.5hrs to the closest Carmax so he could sell his all-black Dodge Charger. We arrived at the scene mid morning. The air was crisp, I was sporting my new Harley shirt and the sun was shining. We had high hopes. Everything was Gucci. Until it wasn't. We go inside. Acquaint ourselves with a employee and begin the process. A ma'am took our information and invited us to check out the cars for sale in an alternate parking lot. She told us processing papers will take 30min. And she left. We go out to the alternate parking lot not realizing our soon unfortunate fate. If only someone had told us. If only she had told us. 30min pass. We head back inside. She's no where to be found. A similar consultant approaches and takes over, operation sell the all-black Dodge Charger. After some more exchange of info and money talk, we are directed to the lobby to continue with the paper work. The clock strikes, 12:15PM. The world is in motion. People are content. We cary on. "We'll need to talk to your bank. Are they open?" Time stops. A silence so loud. He looks like a deer in head lights. My RBF has never been more resting. How many times does a Carmax consultant assist in buying a car off of a commoner? How many times have they needed to talk to the bank? How many times. They knew. They knew this moment was approaching. And they didn't warn us. We could not prepare.. *Aurthur first meme* She seems to empathize with our misfortune. And then, from the mouth of the one who will betray us, came those words. Those words of empty promises. She speaks, "I can call Monday morning and get the information and you could just come back and finish the paper work." Another 3hr tour. But it's okay! Because she said she'd take care of us. And mistakes like forgetting banks close early on crispy Autumn Saturday afternoons happen. It's now Monday 6PM. Got those Monday vibes. My guy's been awake since 4:50AM. He's tired. I'm tired. Its dark. It's raining. It's just plain cold. Another 3hrs. Here we come. Upon arrival we believe this is it! The paper work will be ready! And we can be done with this! We proceed to the front desk. Once again, hopeful in our hearts. The girl who proclaimed promises was no where to be found. And neither was the paper work. "It appears if anyone called the bank they didn't leave any notes. And there's nothing on your file here.... uhm..." As you may have guessed by now, the simple promise wasn't fulfilled. She didn't call. The paper work wasn't done. And we just drove another 3hrs in a diesel.. In the end, my guy had returned yet another day. Today. Now, Nov. 7. And alas they still hadn't had everything done they needed. He stuck around and didn't throw a fit because that's the kinda man he is. Missed work and drove another 3hrs to get this done. As for me, I made an account just so I could leave a review. I have purchased 2 cars from them and been happy with the purchased. The prices seemed reasonable and the people were nice. I even traded one of the cars I purchased for something else after a week. Nothing wrong with it just wasn't working out like I expected for me. Process was smooth and painless. Haven't had to use the warranty but it was priced well and has a great reputation online. My CarMax story... I purchased a 2013 Chrysler 200 from CarMax Cincinnati back in September. Upon purchasing this car, I found the Check TPMS system message on. I called CarMax Dayton to get the issue addressed since I live closer to that facility. Ashley was nice on the phone, and in person, but it's not a genuine personality. I took the car in, and she said "Oh it should be a minor fix." Well, about an hour later, their tech came back with "We will need to refer you to a dealer. There's an issue with a wiring harness." So, CarMax referred me to Dave Dennis (I will review them separately). Dave Dennis said that the Wireless Control Module failed on the vehicle, and that they had to order it and replace it. They had the vehicle for a little over a week. Got the vehicle back and within a day, same message came back. Called CarMax, they asked if I called Dave Dennis, I advised I did not. They set me up with an appointment to go up and do a diagnostic. Went up there, spent 2 hours in their waiting room and they came back with another WCM failure. They ordered a replacement, and advised they would have CarMax call me when it came in. A week went by and no call. Called CarMax, they called Dave Dennis. Found out that the service advisor at their dealership forgot to call me. So we set up and appointment to swap the module our. Got the car back and the TPMS error came back within 3 hours of picking it up. Made arrangements to drop it back off with DD. Well, another service person at CarMax by the name of Jessy decided for the company that they weren't going to do anymore repairs on the vehicle and left me standing at DD completely embarrassed and red faced. I called CarMax corporate and spoke with Chris in their executive team. Within a day they were falling all over themselves to apologize and put me in a loaner car of my choice. As I was dropping my vehicle off for the 4th time for the same issue, one of their sales guys backs into it, causing damage to the bumper. CarMax agrees to repair his damage. Fast forward 2 and a half weeks, I get a call saying the vehicle is ready. I go up there before they open to look at it, and I find a chrome piece on the bumper isn't repaired. They agree to repair that and tell me they will call me. A few days later I get a call that it's ready. I go up and pick the vehicle up. However, within an hour I notice that on the lid of the trunk there are deep scratches, two of them that go all the way down through the paint. I took it back up there, and Ashley with an attitude states that they were there and refuses to let me speak with a manager. So, now I am waiting on corporate again to find out if they will fix this issue. If not, I'm taking them to small claims court, calling the BBB and maybe any media outlet that will listen. Buyer Beware. read more

Less than 1hr! I've never been in and out of a dealership that fast before and got what I needed to do accomplished.

Easy, fast, and friendly service. It was refreshing to skip the haggling over price and warranty. I would definitely recommend them.

We purchased a vehicle for my birthday from a carmax and it needed to be shipped to us. We were told once the vehicle was inspected we would be able to pick it up. After four days we noticed there were paint spots on the back of the cab of the truck so we took it back to get corrected. The next day we did not receive a phone so we called them. We were told that the truck had been repainted and that a lot of the body of the truck was replaced with bondo. They gave us the option to return the truck and get a new one or refund or keep it and deal with it cracking and breaking later. We returned the truck and got another one. 21 days later we returned to pick it up....after it's thorough inspection. On the way home we noticed a crack/hole in the windshield, which they were going to get fixed. After 6 days we still haven't heard anything about it getting fixed. Also, the remote start quit working and the alarm randomly went off. We decided to return this truck and get a refund. We were told that we could get our down payment refunded in a check that we would get in 15 days or refunded to our card. The majority of the down payment was in one card and the additional down payment for the second truck was in a different car. Since the funds were transferred from one truck to the other the original card used was no longer in use for their system to put the refund on. Now we wait for a check. After this ordeal we called the bank in which we got the loan and was told that they only show the loan for the first truck and that payment is due next week....for a truck we do not have. And...the payment for the second truck is due at the end of May. Again, for a truck we do not have. Carmax has not paid of the original loan from the returned truck so this is still an open loan that needs paid by us or it will reflect on his credit. Some of the employees were wonderful to work with but the overall experience was awful. We will never put ourselves through that ordeal with them again and will be taking our business else where. read more

Edit 6/10/2018 I am finally through with Carmax Dayton. Wiping my hands through the whole situation. They had one final sales rep with me (Brenda) and she did a good job, but the sour taste in my mouth was just too great. I sold my car there Sunday and say good riddance to the lousy customer service. Managers of Carmax and Corporate offices, if you would like to observe excellent customer service and how a car should be sold, please visit Voss BMW in Centerville. We were treated like mattered, maybe even a bit spoiled by their presentation of the car we purchased there and detailed walk through of the vehicle. They too were no pressure, but they have a FAR superior presentation and FAR superior customer service skills. Please take note. Edit 6/2/2018 After our experience last year, I was cautious giving CarMax another chance. But, I am in the market for a used car for myself and they, unfortunately, have the best selection. I started the process a couple of weeks ago while I waited on my bonus and asked for a vehicle to be brought over to test drive. I was contacted by John, who received my inquiry via their web page. He got the car scheduled to transfer (which took quite a long time for being so close...but that may be logistics). While transferring, I went into the Dayton store to look at some other vehicles. I went in without notification and was not surprised the John was with another customer, so they put me with another employee. Fine, no worries, I didn't tell him I would be in. I drove a couple of cars and then left, noting that I would be back that weekend. Again, no set time, so he was unavailable, no biggie, I tested a couple more. The next time, I did tell him I would be in about 7 on a Friday. I had also requested another vehicle. I called later that week because I had not heard about the transfer, where he told me that he had not seen it and would get it processed (I don't know how he could have missed it). I told him I was coming in Friday with my wife to look again and get her opinion. Surprise, busy. Now I am with the third person (whom always go through the same script, "what kind of car are you looking for, blah, blah, blah). Do they not add this to my profile? Do they need to keep asking? Well, the test drive went okay, but again, no John. This happened the next two times, always with different people. Finally, the other car was in and I told Victoria (his second) that I would be in at 10 am Saturday (6/2). I go in and, guess what...no John (he was on a charity walk) and no Victoria. In the meantime, the guy at the front desk saw John coming in and said he would let him know I was there. I told him I would be in the lot browsing and to have him meet me there or call. At 10:45, I had had enough. I went back in and John was sitting with other customers, I guess appointments mean little to the Dayton store and of course still no Victoria. I told the desk guy I wanted to speak to a manager, and he said he was one. I informed him of my extreme dissatisfaction with the process (it mirrored last year) and told him that corporate WILL hear of this and I would go down to the Cincinnati store (40 min out of my way). Monday, I will make sure they do. With the prices they charge I expect a few things in return from CarMax: Clean mechanically sound cars, a clean showroom, and exceptional customer service. The customer service at Dayton is not even mediocre, The Cincinnati store was the exact opposite as far as service. IF, and that is a very big IF I end up buying a car again from CarMax, it will be because of the Cincinnati store. I will be talking to corporate, and you better belive that I will go out of my way to warn others looking for cars in Dayton to stay away from CarMax, Dayton. read more

The crew at CarMax was so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable throughout the car selling process. I had a tight timeline to sell my car because of a move, and they worked throughout the day to make sure I had all the paperwork in order to get the sale done in one day (despite my bank being not as helpful.) The price they offered for my car was in line with the Kelly Blue Book trade-in value, although a little bit on the lower side. I didn't expect to be wowed by Carmax! I really wanted a Toyota Yaris and well, asking for a Yaris at a Toyota dealer is like, "Well, here's the ONE we have" and most of the time, they were brand new or at least 6 years old. I wanted a 2-3 year old car with low miles so I went to carmax.com. So I browsed for a few months, and found at least 10 cars that were way better for me than what the dealer had. But I waited. Then I saw it - the perfect car, the right engine, the right number of doors, the right style, the right number of years, the right everything, even the right color. I requested a transfer on a Sunday afternoon and got a call within a few hours from Travis (on a Sunday afternoon!!!!). Travis was super and answered all my questions. The car was there by Wednesday and I was able to take it home on Friday. Me and my limited knowledge looked it over, test drove it and was happy. But skeptical..... So I took it to my mechanic on Monday. He called it BEAUTIFUL. Ever hear a mechanic call a car beautiful?? Me either. Perfect looking everything.... All in all, the process was painless. My sales-person Kristin was fantastic....and thats where the good times ended. Id give these guys 0 stars if i could. I bought a 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan for my wife, fully loaded with 29,000 miles on it. Drove fine on the surface streets but as soon as we took it on the highway it had a pretty violent vibration that shook the steering wheel, seats and pretty much the entire car. Since then i have dropped the vehicle off 4 seperate's times over a 9 day period and am yet to get an answer and the car is sitting in their shop at this very moment. They have assured me the problem was fixed and each time it was not. They refuse to allow me to take it elsewhere for a second opinion, i could do this and pay for it on my own but don't feel that is right as this is a very nice vehicle and is under warranty with Carmax for 30 days. Service staff is very rude and clearly not very competent as well. Chris in the service department acts as the front man to make you feel like they care and be nice on the phone, but upon talking to Joey the service manager its pretty evident that customer service is not their priority. Due to my wifes driving record she is unable to be insured to drive the loaner car....so 4 times in 9 days i have had to move switch cars, move car-seats around, swap cars with my wife...just miserable all around. DO NOT buy a car from these guys unless you enjoy getting stampeded on by the big guys. Awful awful awful read more

My ex-girlfriend bought a car here in 2013. She paid $10,000 for a P.O.S. Hyundai Accent that came off the lot with transmission and shock problems. I went with her when she took it back one week after she bought it and we were met with extremely rude people who weren't happy to fix it. A fee weeks later, her car wouldn't start. I opened up the hood and saw that the battery posts were corroded and rusted all the way off. Trip number 2. Fearing they wouldn't actually replace anything, I wrote my initials on the old battery posts and battery. They tried to CHARGE her to "replace" everything. Luckily, I opened up the hood and saw that my initials were still on the battery posts and battery. All that they did was spray the battery posts with a type of cheap sealant. I asked to see the mechanic, and he told me directly to my face that he completely replaced everything. I showed him my initials on both the battery and the posts, yet he still stuck by how he "personally" replaced everything. After some arguing they eventually replaced it the right way. Not even 2 weeks after that ordeal, we had to go right back because there was yet another problem with her "no frame damage guaranteed good-quality car max car". All together, we took it back 6 times in 2 months, and they refused to return the car. It eventually broke down and she bought a new one. I've never seen such horrible, lie-to-your-face customers service at a supposed good quality car company. I would never buy a car here. read more

Do not believe their "AutoCheck" History Report. I ran a CarFax and it showed that the car had been in a serious accident with airbag deployment, which they later acknowledged. Their "AutoCheck" report did not accurately account for that. It also missed a "minor" accident. They tried selling me a replacement car, but at a higher price. So I'm returning the car, as a disappointed customer. Bottom Line... don't trust their "AutoCheck" Reports. Shop with an honest Dealer that uses CarFax. read more

Last week, my IMA check engine light came on in my 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid. I was very upset by this because I have only had my car for four months and it was barely at 50,000 miles. When considering buying this car, replacing my battery was my only concern and the fact that it was needing to be done so quickly was an issue in my mind. I went into the service department on Thanksgiving Eve, an hour before they closed, and spoke with Ashley Underwood. After explaining how upset I was with this situation, she calmed me down and found a solution to my problem. She offered me great customer service and I left feeling that my problem was fixed, or at least on the way to being fixed. Kudos Ashley! read more

I worked with London at the Dayton Carmax in Ohio. She appeared to be really nice at first, when she knew I got approved for a loan. Like it was her decision. I had to get a pay stub for work. She kept pressuring me and suggesting to get an advance at work. I can't do that. When it didn't go through, I told her that I still wanted her to look. She said just go on line and pick something and I will have it transferred. Funny when the sale is not going to close, they blow you off. I texted her late and asked for a different name.
