I recently came here with my sister so she could buy a vehicle. We really enjoyed our sales guy Ruddy. He was great to work with and made the experience very seamless. The only negative thing that I have to say about the experience is that I had asked when we sat down for the loan what percentage the rates started at. We were told they started at 5.25%. My sister has good credit so I wasn't expecting her payment to fall in a much higher percentage bucket. We were good with the price of the vehicle, and the warranty that she added on. However, and this is a big however, until we were signing the documents, did we see for the first time that the loan she was being given was at over 14% APR. This is absolutely ridiculous and unheard of for somebody who has good credit. We wasted no time going over to Navy Federal and securing her a proper loan at a reasonable rate. The amount that Carmax was trying to charge her in interest was more than half of what the vehicle cost with the add-ons. Let that sink in. Do not sign blindly and make sure you understand what you would be paying in interest. I highly recommend getting pre-approved elsewhere for a loan first and not using their financing. You have three days to get a loan elsewhere and have it changed over, but I would suggest making sure you're eligible before you go car broke. We didn't see any of that until half way through signing the contract. Kind of crazy! read more

Suggested Carmax to my best friend whom bought a Honda but her customer experience was terrible. The seller (Mike) didn't offer a test drive just kept emphasizing "well it's a honda". Didn't tell her about the 10 day return, didn't place a bow when she bought it. Very unsupportive despite the car being beautiful she decided to return it because the service was soo bad. He was suggesting her not to go through the process for self employed income, say it would take sooooo long. Denying this resulted in a very high interest rate. Mike thought bo one would ever return a Honda. Well surprise surprise mike. She now has a brand new Mazda, champagne service with a bow! and lower interest rate. First thing I would like to say is buying the car was great. Sales rep was amazing. The problem is the service department! When I purchased my vehicle it was in the contract they would fix a few minor issues. It should have been a one time visit but I had to go several times because they keep forgetting to do something( even though it was discussed several times). The first visit I waited over 6 hrs when told it would take 2 and nothing was accomplished. The last time I took it they left grease on the lining. No one ever answers or calls you back.. I could keep going on about how horrible the service department is. Before you get a warranty through them pls think again. It's nothing but headaches. read more

WARNING! Do not buy a Tesla from CARMAX. They will tell you to buy an extended warranty and that repairs can be done there with authorized Tesla Parts. THAT IS A LIE. CARMAX does not do repairs on Tesla's, they will send you to the Tesla dealership on military highway. Once there, Tesla does not accept third-party warranties you will have to pay for all repairs out-of-pocket with a hope of reimbursement from Max Care. If they approve the reimbursement, it will take 3 to 4 weeks. It's been a cluster bomb. I hope to save someone a ton of trouble and Time. read more

DO NOT BUY YOUR CAR HERE!!! In 2024, my elderly mother purchased a 2017 Ford Focus, with 47k miles, for $15,000. I checked the CarFax on it recently - CarMax rolled the miles back from 99,000 miles to 47,000. They could've only been able to sell it for only $2500; instead, with the rollback, they fleeced my elderly mother at a price tag of $15,000!!! As far as I'm concerned, they owe her $12,000, and I am going to collect, by hook crook or OTHER methods. read more

I have had cash in my bank account for almost 2 months Now; two meetings with a sales rep who continues to be completely unhelpful. The franchise in general is disorganized inefficient, and has an absolute lack of customer service. I should be driving a brand new car by now and I'm still playing games with delivery dates that take 14 days for a car is six hours away. Don't go here thinking that it's gonna be convenient easy fun or efficient. You'll be sorely disappointed from the moment you check in and get stuck in a waiting queue for up to an hour and a half. read more

I recently purchased my car a few weeks ago through Carmax and unfortunately had 2 lights pop up on my dash only a week after purchase. I tried for 3 days to try and get in touch with someone at the service department and each time I was either sent to voicemail with the mailbox full, told i'd get a call back, or disconnected. I finally got in for an appointment and ran 2 minutes late. they threatened to reschedule me & were extremely rude. after my appointment they stated I needed to take it to Toyota. Toyota customer service was AMAZING. However, they needed response from CarMax considering I purchased a 3yr warranty with them and had only purchased the car less than a month ago. i'm DISGUSTED with Carmax and their lack of service, professionalism, and empathy for my situation. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE FROM THEM AGAIN read more

Although no buying experience on my first visit I found them extremely customer oriented. The customer service at CarMax VB sets them way apart from others selling used vehicles. My rep Scott Howard was incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of buying and financing a used car. They gave me an appraisal for my car on trade in that was a few hundred less than I needed. However the inventory is staggering! They offer a 30 day money back guarantee on every deal. Who else does this? I was specifically looking for my son who resides in Saint Louis. Scott honed in on two area CarMaxx in the Saint Louis area to find the best cars that suited my specifications. There was never any pressure. The fact they are nationwide is a major draw to me as cars can be reserved and shipped to other locations at no cost or minimal fees of a few hundred. I look forward to doing business with CarMaxx the first time. read more

I recently had a horrendous experience at Carmax. I love my car...but from start to finish, this experience was a complete nightmare. First and foremost, the front office was utterly unresponsive. I would call every day during the day and not get a response. The only way to get someone to talk to you is to physically go to the location. Trying to get any information or assistance was like pulling teeth. Secondly, it became clear that they had no idea how to handle out-of-state buyers, which caused unnecessary delays and confusion. They didn't know how to transfer my tags, they didn't know how to handle the the state sales tax, it was just utter chaos. Once I got back to my state, they were able to fix everything, but they said it would've been cheaper and quicker if Carmax would've handled it all. To make matters worse, I purchased an electric car, and upon pick up, it wasn't charged to 100%. I specifically requested this. Twice. In the buying process, we noticed that a level one charger was not in the vehicle. I had to press the management for them to purchase one because they come with the car. They agreed that I can purchase one and they will reimburse me. It took me over a month to get the reimbursement of my funds. we are talking about over $2000. The biggest shock came when they lost my bank's check. I had to spend an excessive amount of time waiting around, with very little communication or apology from the staff. The lack of organization and professionalism was astounding. In my experience, Carmax was far below any acceptable standard. The lack of responsiveness, poor handling of out-of-state purchases, failure to properly prepare my electric car, late repayment, and the mishandling of my bank check all contributed to an incredibly frustrating experience. I would not recommend this Carmax to anyone. read more

This company doesn't know what they are doing. Matt Winslow accepted fraudulent papers on a car. I bought the car unfortunately and that's where the nightmare began. I can't register the car, can't drive the car and it sits in my driveway. An inspection cost $115 in Maryland and that expired so I'm out that money. I can't make deliveries so I'm out income also. DISGRACEFUL! DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THEM. THEY WILL SCREW YOU AND NOT GIVE A DAMN. read more

I don't ever write reviews but this needed to be said. The 2 stars is simply for the service center. The process of buying my new car was very smooth and I have no complaints on that part. The service center is a joke. I only got the 90 day warranty and when I bought the car one of the fan motors was out. They ordered the part and fixed it no problem. NOWWW, I have been hearing a "clunking" sound from the front driver's side wheel. I brought it up to them right after the fan motor issue. They test drove it and said they didn't hear anything. Brought it back a week later with the same complaint. Test drove it again and said they didn't see or hear any clunking noise. I'm no mechanic so who am I to question their diagnosis. Well, now it's 3 weeks later and the clunking noise is much louder. I take it to a shop and they diagnose w/ "front sway bar links have measurable play". The car is still covered by the 90 day warranty so back to CarMax I go. I give them the diagnosis and they "order" the part. A week later, no call or update so I call them. They said it's been ordered and I will get a text when it arrives to schedule a repair. Yesterday is when I get the text to call and schedule the repair. I call, no answer (not even given the chance to stay on hold.. the phone just hangs up on me). So I called again, maybe another 3-4 times.. no answer. I go into the service center in person and the man tells me "well, we got the part but I'm not sure how long it's going to take to repair so I'll need to ask the technician and give you a call to schedule". Fast forward to today.. no call from them so I call and guess what? NO ONE ANSWERS!!!! Why is it so hard to do your job?? Like you work at the service center, fixing cars, how do you not know how long it takes to replace this part?? So now I'm stuck driving a car that I don't feel safe in, all because no one has any answers and can't do their job correctly. Live, laugh, love that. read more

CarMax MaxCare is a Scam I purchased an extended warranty through CarMax called MaxCare, which is underwritten by CNA National. When I bought my vehicle, the salesperson strongly recommended MaxCare, saying, "Oh, you're buying such an expensive vehicle--you'll likely need MaxCare in case anything happens to the engine or transmission." And he was right. Something did happen to my engine. Specifically, a camshaft and lifters failure, diagnosed by an authorized repair center. However, CNA National informed me that I would need to pay $4,600 out of pocket for an engine teardown to provide them with photos of the damaged camshaft before they would even consider covering the repair. This teardown cost represents a significant part of the overall repair, and I don't believe it's reasonable to ask me to cover it from my own funds. If they require additional diagnostics, they should handle it as part of the coverage. It's entirely unacceptable to expect customers to pay such a large amount up front. When CarMax sells you MaxCare, they lead you to believe that, should anything happen to your engine that costs thousands of dollars to fix, this warranty will have you covered. That's simply not the case. CNA National is essentially a scam--they won't pay for your repairs. This review is based on my personal experience, and it has been incredibly stressful. I will never purchase an extended warranty again, as it has proven to be a complete scam. read more

On February 7th I went online and scheduled a test drive appointment and selected three vehicles I was interested in. Confirmed with the appointment scheduler and proceeded to Carmax once I got off work at 5p. I also went ahead and got pre-qualified. Also did an appraisal online for my 2019 BMW 530i. Wasn't a fan of the appraisal amount online but none the less I figured hey I have an appointment. Maybe an in personal appraisal would be better. My appointment was for 6p. My full name and time was on a digital screen when I walked in. This is where things went down hill. Upon being greeted by a nice gentleman I was told I'd be helped by the lady at the front. Well let's just say I was not a fan of someone categorizing me and assuming I was someone else that referred another client just because my name is Cindy Smith. Next I had to constantly repeat what vehicles I was interested in, yet when I mentioned if you could pull up my profile the scheduler had it clear as day attached. To make matters worse, I was pointed in the direction of the "tree line," told to locate the vehicles I was interested in. (Lexus RX and Mercedes GLC) told all the vehicles were open, and I could take a look at them while awaiting my appraisal. Mind you I inquired then about my test drive appointment ..to which I was completely blown off. Needless to say I didn't find the cars and had to come back inside and then after that the sales women finally decided to come outside with my daughter and I to assist like she should have the first time. Mind you I did not get the keys to the car I scheduled an appointment for nor did I do an actual test drive. Not a single one. This was the second worse potential car buying expiring in all my almost 40 yrs, first at age 19, to put it in perspective. So not only was I not given top-notch customer service but I also didn't get the opportunity to even test drive any of the vehicles I scheduled prior. I live in Grassfield Chesapeake area so about 20mi away...complete waste of my time. Also brought my 16 year old daughter with me to get a hands on approach for purchasing cars. Let's just say the sales woman was an awesome example of HORRIBLE customer service and what not to do to a customer....considering I left and went to Lexus dealership around the corner and test drove a 2023 off the lot prior to even giving my license to the salesman. Top tier service ...my point here is I was not treated with the type of care anyone would hope to have during a car buying experience. The sales woman even told my child "some nervousness is good to have," when I mentioned she'd be taking her behind the wheel road test this coming weekend. Guess my daughter being confident about her ability rubbed her the wrong way. Very condensending and rude... Another insult was she asked did I see anything else I liked while walking around aimlessly looking for the vehicle I was scheduled to test drive. I Do NOT recommend this location. I felt discriminated and belittled here and wouldn't recommend it to an enemy. It's fine to not work off commission, but being a good person should come naturally. I also feel that she interfered with my appraisal amount since she asked me what I was quoted online prior to any type of service rendered. I stated I didn't trust online so I wanted to come in physically. Also not good for the sales woman to bad talk another establishment just because my offer was higher with Carvana...making statements like they're in financial trouble on the verge of bankruptcy etc. The saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all was completely lost on this woman. If I could give a 0 star I would. $26,400 was what Carmax appraised my vehicle for, but I thank God I went with Carvana for my $29,078 offer....my BMW is scheduled for pickup Sunday. (NO negative equity loan paid off). I drove my fully loaded 2020 Acura MDX certified pre-owned vehicle with 100k mile bumber to bumber warranty from Manufacturer home today $0 cash down on February 8th with Hall Acura. If I were a nasty person I'd blast her name but this was a great lesson of live and learn and glad I still came out on top. Carmax loss a great customer and truly need to re-evaluate the representative they have representing them.... If anyone from management would like to follow up on this experience, please reach out. My name is Cindy Smith. I'd be more than happy to have a discussion. read more

I have left all of my reviews up from the day I purchased. Car was sold to me with undisclosed frame damage in 2018. The car I meticulously took care of for 6 years, never in an accident- I was being offered $3k for and nothing more because of frame damage. Found this out when I went to trade it in at another dealership beginning of last year. I couldn't get anyone on the phone be it that I lived in another state. Had to contact their corporate location to even get someone to call me. They offered to buy my car back after inspecting and confirming it had frame damage that was "missed" in paperwork that was given to me at the time of purchase. Instead of getting mad I gave them another chance and said I wanted to look at what else they had. Walked around the lot for a hour no one came out. Salesman that was "assigned" to me never contacted me once over the next week. I reached out to the manager I was in contact with, with vehicles I was interested in.. nothing. Went in early the next week to take my car in to get my money back. The woman in that department was wonderful and the only thing pleasant about this. Never heard from them again. read more

When I trying to get reimbursed incrementally for the detailing, the Sales Manager Tasia tried to tell me it had to be all at one time, so she was gonna reneg on the last $25 bucks. Do NOT go to CarMax for anything! I bought a Dodge Journey from them less than a year ago. Now, I will acknowledge that I didn't do all my research. They sold me the car for over $17,000. Within the first 90 days, the check engine light came on. I took it to CarMax and they said they changed a spark plug. Car worked for about a week before the check engine light came on again. Called CarMax and left a message to get it checked again as it was still within the 90 days. NEVER CALLED ME BACK AND COULD NEVER REACH ANYONE! The check engine light continued to turn on and off as I waited for CarMax to get back in touch. Finally, one day my could wouldn't start and I had to take it to another mechanic. They informed me that the spark plugs were worn and ONE OF THEM WAS THE WRONG SPARK PLUG! I then proceed to put over $2,000 of repairs into this car and decide I just need to get rid of it. By this point, I've owned the car for 8 months. When I check Kelly Blue Book to see what it's worth, it's only worth at max $5,000. The list price when I bought it was over $14,000! When I looked to trade it back to CarMax, they were going to offer me $1,200 for a car they sold me 9 month previously for over $17,000. I will NEVER return to CarMax for ANYTHING! read more

Purchase process is slightly slow, but tolerable. The part that is unsatisfactory is the service responsiveness. We had to take the car back 3 times and counting despite identifying all the problems that needed to be taken care of the first time around at the time of purchase. Despite identifying that my car had the automatic trunk opening feature, the tech said the car (highest level trim) did not have the feature. It was not until I had to take the car back the second time, showed them the setting, and the diagnosis (antenna in the rear bumper was broken) that they are willing to fix. 3 weeks later they still haven't notified me of a return appointment. Also, the scheduler NEVER responds to the phone. You cannot even leave a message. Such a bad experience! read more

Ok, so I've never used carmax before. I decided to give it a try when I saw an explorer I liked online. I did the online purchase process and scheduled an appointment for pickup at 11am on 03/04/24. I was at the counter trying to check in for my appointment at 10:50. A little after 11, I was told have a seat and someone would be with me as soon as they could. They didn't have the staff available and there were other previously scheduled express pickups ahead of me still. I sat there for 45 minutes before they finally called me. I was told I did everything online, so I simply needed to sign 2 things and pay my down payment and I could drive away. I promptly signed the 2 forms, paid my down payment, and was ready to go. The lady said to give her a second to go out the tags on and I could leave. 30 minutes later she came back and said I was good to go. 5 hours after I picked the car up, the check engine light came on. Since they were closed, I called the service line the next morning. I was told they couldn't see me in the system yet, so bring it in at 10 when the store opened and see the sales manager. I was here when the doors opened at 10. I explained what was going on and they said they'd put me in a loaner and get me on my way quickly. It'd take them a day or two to get to the diagnostic. I was on with that. They took me to service and told me they'd get me a loaner vehicle. The service rep took my explorer keys and called over the radio that he needed a loaner for a customer waiting. Over an hour later and I'm still waiting. When I asked for an update, I was told it can take them time to go through the list and find a car with no recalls to issue me. I asked for a ballpark time, and he said they'd try to get it as soon as possible. The initial impressions when you walk in the door are great. The agents that great you are nice and attentive. Past that, it's a waiting game. They have no concern about how long they keep you in limbo. For a place that advertises simplicity and speed, they are missing the mark. read more

Anything after that you will have you pay out of pocket. I explained I purchased an extended warranty up to 125,000 miles and all repairs are coverd till then. He then stated that Maxcare don't exceed repairs more then the car is worth. On 12/16/2022 I arrived at Carmax 10am after having my car towed the day before. I let the new salesmen that I was assigned the reason I was there and I was looking for this matter to be resolve. I explained to him Carmax is selling vehicle warranties under false pretenses. I also explained to him that I called Fidelity Warranty who's MaxCare, will not repair any vehicle if it exceed more then the vehicle is worth. I called Fidelity Warranty for him and his coworker Bonnie (she' sold me the Fusion and the warranty). The customer representative explained to the car salesmen just as it was explained to me the night before. Their were shock to never knew or heard of this before. I stated you learn something new everyday. Now that Carmax is aware of selling warranties under false pretenses, they are not trying to take accountability. They think they can just fix the small things for free and that's it. I only had my car a little over two years. I still have a few years left on my loan.
