Our CarMax purchase. We couldn't be happier (unless it was free).
    Paul C.

I've read some of the other reviews of CarMax, and have to wonder about attitude. If you expect to be taken advantage of, you will probably have a bad experience. My wife and I subscribe to the theory "Try nice first". It's served us well and did at CarMax. CarMax is not like any regular dealer. They post their best price and that's it. If you think it's fair, you'll buy, if not, walk. If you like the offer on your trade, accept it, if not, walk. I don't understand how people can complain about something that they controlled. I'm almost 70 and have worked in an auto dealership before. I've bought a few cars in my life and having worked in the field, I know how the deals are made. If you go to CarMax, you control the deal. You choose a vehicle. You get an appraisal, if you like it, accept it. My wife and I had discussed getting a new vehicle for several months. We were driving past CarMax and decided to give it a look. We discussed our needs with a salesman and he checked his inventory for something to fit our needs and budget. They gave us a fair price for our trade-in and it was a done deal. The most surprising thing was that they shopped for interest rates and found one that even our own bank couldn't match. The paperwork, insurance transfer, title search and new plates all came together in a couple of hours, and we drove off in our new SUV. When we got home, I discovered that the key for the aftermarket wheel locks was missing and the batteries in the electronic key fobs needed to be replaced. No problem, took it right over, they ordered new lug nuts and set me up with an appointment. They replaced the fob batteries and down the road we went. Personally, my wife and I have had a positive experience with CarMax. Remember, car dealers are NOT charity organizations. You can go and make the best deal you can or you can leave. You're in control. I suggest you try CarMax yourself and form your own opinion. I hope your experience is as good as ours.

Justin came by and did not even sit down to talk to us. He stood there and basically talked down to us (figuratively and literally). He went to print off some numbers and came back. We tried to negotiate and he went off and came back with a $500 discount saying that was the best they could do and to text him if we were interested. The entire exchange was probably less than 10 minutes. Then we saw him sit down at another table with another couple. We felt abandoned and as if he was not interested in talking to us. We asked if we could speak to someone else. They brought over Jay... and as we were walking over to a table, he started talking to another customer. We thought it was just a question but he basically sat down with them and again we were left by ourselves. The next guy came over and told us that he would find someone else for us, only to bring Justin back over, who seemed annoyed that we would even ask for someone else. We told him that it was because he was busy with another couple and replied in a snarky way that he could multi-task. It was evident by his rude demeanor that he was not willing to work with us. The entire exchange was just very dismissive and I'm glad that we ending up leaving and buying a car from another dealership where we had a much better experience. We will definitely not be coming back and will be telling everyone to avoid this location.

I'd looked at a tire and saw Hankook. i thought ok, it's got good tires. When I finally had a chance to drive it in snowy weather, it didn't handle well for an AWD car. I looked closer at the tires. it has 3 different tire brands on it! an AWD car should have the same 4 tires. when I called & asked for the manager by name, he was busy. so I left a message. said how the tires were different brands. because it was 3 weeks past the 30 day window, they could/would do nothing for me. even though I'd been sick. this is what the sales guy who answered the phone told me. the mgr never called back.they knew I am disabled. didn't matter. when I got the car, it didn't have front floor mats either. I had to buy those. I was supposed to get 3 mos of Sirius/Xm. never got that. they also lied about the warranty. I emailed their corporate office. no response. They will say anything to get the sale. Hound you by text and phone. if you have a problem, though, too bad. Don't buy from them. EDIT 5/19/26 - I already emailed Enterprise and got no response. And the link provided below just sends me to a generic enterprise page with all their 800 numbers. I called the car sales number & got a phone tree with 3 questions. Since I wasn't calling about any of the 3 automated questions, i got nowhere. I called the Rental service line and she had no way for me to contact corporate. Do not buy from them. What a disappointment.

Nobody from that dealership ever called or emailed, but we drove up the next day nonetheless. We were told that the vehicle we were interested in was "on order" and that customers that had ordered in March of 2025 were just getting their vehicles. They had a limited inventory, and I did not like the color choices available. I was told unless I wanted to wait months, those were my options. I was also advised that nobody had inventory on their lots, and if their website said they did, it really meant the vehicle was on order. My husband phoned Bob Johnson Lexus in Rochester, and we were given an appointment for the same day. Before we drove out, we asked if they actually had inventory on their lot, or if their units were on order or in transit. We were assured that they have several options to select from that were available (not on order). Our salesman at Bob Johnson Lexus was Greg Palmer. He was absolutely wonderful. He answered all of our questions and showed us several options with all the features we were looking for. Greg was knowledgeable, fair, and just a great guy all around. Our appointment with Greg was at 1:00 p.m. and the team at Bob Johnson was able to wrap up everything, including a 1:1 tutorial on how to operate all the new technology, and we were pulling out with our new 2026 Lexus NX 350h the same afternoon. Greg even gave us his personal cell number and asked us to text him to let him know once we were safely home, since it was a 4-4.5 hour trip back. I was really impressed by that. This is the 3rd Lexus I have owned, the first was an 2020 RX350, and the second was a 2021 GX460 both purchased when we lived in Arizona. This is my first hybrid, and so far, I am loving the gas mileage. The team at Bob Johnson Lexus were all friendly and knowledgeable from sales, to finance, and the wonderful gal who showed me how to use all the new bells and whistles that Lexus has come up with since I owned my last one. If you are currently in the market for a new or used Lexus, I highly recommend bypassing Syracuse and driving straight to Bob Johnson Lexus in Rochester, NY and ask for Greg. Less by Jen LaVine

I guess the changeover from John Holtz automotive was not quite complete & Yelp hasn't caught up to all of the name changes that transpired. The first crack at repairing the bumper on my wife's Acura did not go smoothly during this period of transition, unfortunately. There was a bit of mis-communication from the shop as to when the repair would be complete. While the resultant repair appeared to be complete, we had issues with the aftermarket part used to complete the repair (which took almost three weeks). Needless to say, by the time summer rolled around the bumper had started to pop out. Good news was that the Garber Collision team fully covered the cost of swapping out the bumper for a new part. Even provided a loaner for my wife! Turned her frown upside down & renewed my faith in Garber. I'll flesh out this review later and move it to the Yelp entry for Garber collision...

I bought my 2015 Nissan Rogue from this dealership in February. I had expected some issues as it was a little higher in mileage, but absolutely not what I got. They took my two trade-ins for thousands less than they were worth, but I was desperate, and they had known I was desperate as I'd been exhausted and worn down, and that's on me. They had said it wouldn't be ready right away as they were going to replace some tires and the brakes as the vehicle had just come in. Great! But then I had to wait quite a while longer as they didn't even have the title for the car they had already sold me. Fine, I can wait for a good car. I finally got it, and literally the first time out with it after purchasing, the check engine light came on. I brought it back in, it was the gas cap sensor, they cleaned it in hopes it would turn off, and it didn't. Then they were going to charge me for it despite the fact it obviously came from them like this. The warranty I had gotten from them (Rogues are notorious for transmission failure, so I thought it was worth the investment) refused to cover it because, obviously, the dealership should own this. (An aside: at this point I also replied to an actual person for one of their marketing emails, since they seem to have a number of lists and I can't unsubscribe from them all, saying how upset I was and to please take me off all lists. Unsurprisingly, I never got a response and still get emails.) I had to wait a month to go back because my mother has extreme health issues and I couldn't get back down there, they ran the check engine light again, and somehow--despite it consistently being the gas cap before--it's the entire caliper converter needing to be replaced! And of course the warranty wouldn't cover it because the dealership should own up to something as large as that as well. They didn't, of course. And not only that, they told me all four tires and the brakes needed to be replaced. And lo and behold, they were right on those latter things. All four tires were getting close to bald, and those brakes had been squeaking since I got it--and it had been about a month since I bought it. I had mentioned while purchasing that I was distracted by a very ill family member when I was making the deal, and it looks like they absolutely took advantage of that by not even doing the work they promised to do while selling it to me. And, to no one's surprise, I've taken it to two dealers since and had them run the code for the check engine light, and it's just the gas cap. I can't afford all these repairs after buying a "new" car. I finally just got two of my bald tires replaced and I'm hoping to take care of the brakes this month--god knows when I'll get to the gas cap. I drive an average amount, all of this damage was accumulated by me. It was hidden until I was stuck with the car and they could get rid of me. I was in the same place most people are right now: desperate and afraid and needing a vehicle within their means. And they took advantage of that on every single level. Obviously they don't own up to their mistakes, so I'm writing this in hopes that I might save someone else the heartbreak. There are MUCH better dealerships in Rochester, I beg you to wait for the right deal from one of them and not end up like me.
