After the test drive and inspection I thought it was the perfect car, But then they took it into "prep" it before I was able to take it home.( me not knowing what prep consisted of. I only assumed it ment to check oil levels and tire pressure and assure the car was clean). I drove off happy with my purchase and noticed that the gas level was digital and it was marking 23 which i assume ment 23 miles till empty so I stopped in to put gas in the completely empty tank at the nearest gas station which was less then 5 miles away. I noticed a burnt smell coming from the motor area, I'm currently on hold waiting to hear if it was topped off with oil or what and perhaps dripped and burnt off. Update: no one had any idea what it was when I called and I ended up driving back to have them check it but they still had no clue. My husband checked it out and realized that it was coming from the breaks. Update on the empty tank, Carmaxx reimbursed me for the tank of gas. The plus part from my experience is that the sales person was very friendly and straight forward I really love how knowledgeable Xavier was and the way he made it so easy to buy a car from Carmaxx. I'm really hoping to get this resolved to keep them in mind for future reference when buying another vehicle. read more

I don't think much needs to be said on the over all appeal that CarMax has been successfully able to maintain in the car market especially for new buyers and millennials. There is, however, much work to be done in the car industry in general in matching the demands of new demographics with well trained associates. Work that all the good folks in Palm Desert have evidently put in. The era of suit-and-tie intimidation sale is over and Miguel on the sales floor was flawless in demonstrating that. What Miguel and Tito and others have at Palm Desert is a certain type of SENSIBILITY and not a mere sales technique and it was precisely that which made the experience exciting and enjoyable. TBH Miguel also waited forever-long for me to test drive what must have been at least a thousand cars and I didn't feel rushed like not even low-key which is Jedi level patience on the real in a super bureaucratic process for both parties, anyway, thanks everybody! read more

My husband and I sold one of our cars to CarMax. We first made an attempt in December. The process took some time but in all fairness they were busy. We got our offer, but decided to wait a few months so that we would not have to pay out to sell it. I went back again today because I figured it's been a few months and the principal should be lower. Turns out they offered us the same amount as they did in December. The offer was also high than Carvana and Kelly Blue Book! A guy named Mark helped me. The whole process took less than one hour and I walked out with one less car payment!! I have bought a car from CarMax in Temecula and it was the same experience. Once we arrived we had no idea on how to proceed in selling our car. Rose was our appraiser and she was very polite and professional. She exhibited a great deal of patience in response to our many questions. The step by step process was excellent based on how busy the floor was. After her appraisal was confirmed we worked with Marq who was equally as personable. He was multitasking with another customer but was courteous and kept his word regarding the time spent to complete the transaction. He explained each portion of the documents that required signatures explicitly to our satisfaction. After months of misdiagnosis, being mocked and lied too, I decided to take my business elsewhere. Overall CarMax had the vehicle for a month and gave it back in worse condition then when they received it. After which I was told "you're not a certified technician" so anything I say isn't worth a damn. After which I took my truck to the Toyota dealership and they confirmed how absolutely wrong CarMax was from the start. read more

I recently made a purchase for a Van, family has grown and we needed more space. MeShawn took my vehicle order and assisted in having it transferred in from Murrieta. It took three days to come. MeShawn provided excellent customer service and I had already dealt with two employees before her and those two failed in following up. Once I made it to my appointment a gentleman named Marq assisted us in test driving the vehicle, demonstrated the vehicle features to us. He was very professional and gave great customer service. Overall our experience went well and we successfully purchased a van. If you go to CarMax in Palm Desert, ask for MeShawn and Marq. They were very knowledgeable and helpful. read more

I wish there was a zero star review for this particular TERRIBLE Car Max store!! We have taken at least 3 cars to various CarMax stores over the last 8 years - all experiences have been adequate until we had to deal with the Palm Desert CarMax. To put it mildly, they had NO idea what they were doing regarding selling a car that had a 95 year old man (our dad) who was unable to physically come into the store to sell his car. Both dad and our mothers name ( who passed away 2 months ago in Illinois) were on their title. As an adult child, I was able to provide, power of attorney, power of appointment, death certificate, etc. They jacked us around left and right FOR HOURS: They said they couldn't accept a document of my mother's death certificate in an email. They said "we have to have the actual death certificate." We left CarMax and went to our home to get the certified death certificate and while we were driving back to CarMax they said they couldn't make it happen.They said we had to have a California death certificate! Our mother died in Illinois!! We cannot make up a California death certificate!! We had EVERY DOCUMENT necessary to sell this car and because of their incompetency we could not make this happen. WORST CAR MAX IN THE UNITED STATES. Not only did they not know what they were doing, they clearly showed elder abuse of a 95 year old man when they said they needed our dad to sit and wait for hours for all the paper work to be completed. They said they needed a a wet signature -really?? Shameful and incompetent! read more

I started my car buying journey about 2 months ago and went to dealerships here in the valley and man I hated every interaction I had with them the sticker price was never the actual price they would add on two to $3000 more of cosmetics that they did to the car that the customer never asked for and they pushed financing down your throat every single second and they would fight you on what you wanted. like if you don't know what you're talking about. My Carmax specialist was Ricardo he did a very good job of giving me all the information and also letting me know about all the services that they have there he was very respectable and polite to me and my wife and was very patient to have a toddler there too haha. he didn't push financing but when I inquired about it he gave me all the information but then I changed my mind and decided to buy the whole car and he didn't push for me to do financing he said we're here to do whatever you wanna do. Carmax washed the car put a full tank of gas and they put new tires on the car they were no add-ons that would cost a car thousands of dollars more I got the sticker price no gimmicks. I hope Ricardo gets a RAISE and eventually becomes a manager there because his heart and his attitude with the customer made the experience great. I will say in the next couple of years when I need to get another car my first stop will be Carmax I can say with the utmost truths that they are better than the dealerships hands-down.
