I have been a CarMax fan for many years. I have bought and sold many used vehicles through CM, most recently a 2029 Chevy Silverado high end p/u for my daughter in Hendersonville, TN. The dealership stands behind their sales and I have never had a warranty problem that wasn't made right. CM will always be my first go-to for any used car or truck. read more

Financed a 2015 Nissan Versa and the brake pads and rotors, battery and serpentine belt are ALL BAD!! Carmax refuses to do Anything to take responsibility for the damage. I've had the car since April 2026 and there's no way the "Inspection" just didn't notice the damages. My suggestion would be to make sure you get an honest opinion about the car you're looking at before purchasing it. Shady business people don't mind to mess over the next hard working person read more

Terrible. Worst customer service ever. Did not check the car mechanically like they say they do and car was very dirty. Took to Toyota for check and needed $4000 of work done. They could have cared less and fed me a bunch of crap. STAY AWAY!!! read more

originally gave this location 5 stars because of the ease of purchase, HOWEVER, I am changing that after having the vehicle and discovering all of the issues it has. At purchase, I was told the vehicle inspection was clean with no issues being found. The first time I got on the highway after purchasing the vehcile, I found that it shook at highway speed. Took it to a local shop where I live for what I assumed was a simple aligment issue, as I drove in from out of town to purchase the vehicle. Instead, was told that the entire rear suspension was broken - ball joint boots were cracked, control arms were cracked and split, the rear shocks were broken and leaking fluid, and one of the rear wheels was bent. Totaling over $4,000 in repairs on a vehicle that I had just purchased with the assurance nothing was wrong with it. Word to the wise - take any carmax vehicle for your own independent inspection prior to purchasing. read more

I purchased a 2022 Silverado 2500 HD truck. Within 2 weeks the transmission showed to be going bad. Upper manager Brian MacNeal refused to fix it saying because I changed the 17" wheels to 20" wheels without calibrating. He claims that caused the transmission to go out within a week of changing. Local transmission and motorsports specialists, along with AI are all saying NO WAY! Carmax, your greed is blinding you to basic good customer service. We will tell everyone to never trust you. read more

CarMax sold me a 2022 Silverado Truck 2500HD. The transmission showed to be going out within 2 weeks of purchase. Service Manager John Mears told me they would get it fixed since it was within 30 days, then upper Manager Brian MacNeal overturned that and refused to honor their 30 day warranty by replacing the transmission saying it is because I changed out the 17" tires to 20" tires without calibrating, and that is what caused the transmission to go bad within a week of changing them. All experts are telling me that is not true, along with AI searches. They are just being greedy trying to save themselves some money. They have lost an entire family of customers on this one! We have been purchasing from them for 15 years. They are not the same company. read more

Had such an amazing car buying experience here. Levi was my salesperson and he was helpful, patient and knowledgeable. I really appreciated how laid back everyone was and I did not feel pressured in the slightest. They buy cars in excellent condition so I fell in love with the first one I seriously looked at and test drove it. Upon deciding to move forward with the application process, the approval only took a minute and then we began the seamless process of document uploading and signing. I was able to drive off the lot same day and I really appreciated that they filled my gas tank and ensured my car was immaculate. Highly recommend buying here if you hate the typical predatory practices of other car dealerships. read more

I am absolutely blown away by the poor customer service in the "service department". I am a return customer to Carmax (2 successful, happy purchases in California) but this here is the absolute worst! I purchased what has been my dream car and the dream is now a nightmare. I'm holding on to hope that the Madison TN team can redeem my faith in Carmax but it's unlikely. As I sit here for the second time today simply to have my car fixed, I'm disappointed by the lack of urgency when it comes to taking care of something that should have been done two weeks ago. I will post an update when I return this loaner and my car is actually repaired. read more

The people are always nice, I really wasn't pleased with the process. We had a 2022 Denali shipped here from out of state. The price went away from our visibility and when it came back it seemed a couple thousand higher. We weren't provided any paper proof that the original entry was the same price or anything to prove the price couldn't be altered.... We just received words... might as well been hopes and prayers. Then when we got the truck it was awesome, but it only had a basic key.... No key FOB for a 2022 Denali (little crazy) and I have to manually lock the doors but they offered me a 20% discount to buy other keys....... No proof that these $1000 worth of keys are reflected in the price. So I still liked the truck but overall the business practices are questionable.... read more

I leave this review because I filled out a survey explaining my experience and requested a call back. If Car Max had actually called me back then this could have been resolved and not shared on social media. But, like so many other companies, requesting reviews prematurely, they will get this. I hope it helps other consumers to be wary. My wife and I shipped a car to TN from NC ($250),test drove it, and meticulously inspected it. After two days of procuring finances from another lender we came in at 6pm and didn't finish paperwork till 8pm (saved 4.5% in finance interest rates!). Being dark we drove the new car 2 miles to our home. In the driveway I noticed the roof rack had been bashed in and seriously damaged. I immediately drove it back and they said "we don't know how this happened, we'll get it fixed". So by deductive reasoning, the only explanation, an employee took our new car through their parking lot drop arm barrier and damaged the vehicle. At this point an incident should have been reported to a supervisor. May have been! But security cameras would show exactly what happened, regardless. The repair date has been set for two weeks out for what they say is a one hour repair. They don't seem to want to hustle any and make things right. As I mentioned, they haven't even called despite my complaints. So here's my warning; the process may be fast, easy, and they will communicate non stop until you buy a vehicle, but once they have payment you will not be communicated well with, they will take weeks to repair a vehicle they damage, and they'll have no more (insert plural choice word) to give about you as a client. Also their finance interest rates are absurd and you should look elsewhere for lending. read more

I've only bought new, so this was our first time buying used. We found the perfect mini van online, paid $2k to ship it from CARMAX Irvine, and about 10 days later came to the gallatin location for pick up. Super easy process, financing was good with a rate of 4.39% for 60 months - we do have perfect credit though so keep that in mind for comparison. Rates are at around 6% for most lenders. My only complaint is the car was not detailed or washed. But little elbow grease and all was well. Would go through the process again. Aiden was great, and we were out in 2 hours. read more

I have purchased our last 2 vehicles from Carmax and had a great experience both times! This time had to be the best! We were looking for a vehicle big enough for our family. We went to one location and it didn't have any cars on the lot that fit our needs. The associate we felt with searched other local locations and found us the perfect car! We drove there, he had reserved the car for us and had a salesman waiting to help us! We test drove the car and from the moment we got to the location that had the vehicle we wanted to the time we left with our new vehicle was about 2-3 hours!! read more

They didn't have a very large inventory me and my husband were slightly disappointed because we came in today in search of a car had the cash in hand that we needed to put as a down payment and every single car that they did have in the lot was either already sold or pending and there was only less than a handful of cars that weren't pending or sold that were available and they were none of the cars that we wanted and then when we finally found one car that we were interested in the end cause the car was all scuffed up and dirty in the inside even though they said they had just cleaned it and when we asked well can you guys re-clean it if we purchase it because there was still crumbs on the floor and some stains in the cupholder as if juice was spilled and the salesman said no there was nothing they can do because they already cleaned it and it is a as his card so I was slightly disappointed in that hopefully next time if we do choose going with them again they have better inventory read more

You know this is the second time I've come to this location trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and was greatly disappointed. I waited an hour and 1/2 on the waiting list for them to call me. I started seeing employees leaving by 2's so I go back in and asked an employee if I'm still on the waiting list and she says oh I'm sorry I called and it went to vm ... I'm like ma'am... my phone is right here in my and and it hasn't rang. She replied oh I'm sorry how can I help you. So I tell her and she says oh you can't take that car on a 24 he test drive company policy. By this time we're sitting at her desk. I'm like really? The posting on this car says "24 hour test drive." After that I'm like never mind ma'am because I'm really annoyed! I wait an hour and 1/2 to be seen for you to lie to my face saying you called me and clearly you did not for you to say "I can't test drive that car, company policy" , I just left.... Worst CarMax ever. Very low inventory and no one would help. We found a few vehicles we wanted to test drive but were told we'd have to wait hours for assistance. After an hour and a half, we left. So, 4 years ago My wife and I bought 2 cars here and that experience was amazing. That experience was so amazing we decided to go back. We wanted a truck so we put one on hold and set an appointment up at 4pm to discuss shipment and payment. Guess what? We show up for our appointment and they didn't have anyone available even though I seen about 8 guys walking around doing absolutely nothing and smoking outside. I didn't see them with any customers. I'm not going to give up on Carmax just yet. I will just give up on this location. Go elsewhere. These people think they deserve money without putting in the work or service. While shopping for cars online, I found what I thought would be the ideal vehicle listed on Carmax. So I went down and arranged to have it shipped to this location. I never used carmax before and so had high hopes. I was impressed with the friendly staff and relative ease to have the car shipped. Unfortunately when I saw the car in person I was shocked to find that they didn't even bother to clean up the interior . It was filthy with peeling trimwork that wasn't visible in the pictures; food residue and a smoked in odor, and a list of other unfortunate flaws.. I realized that this vehicle was a terrible value and that this carmax didn't even put forth a minimum of effort to at least make it presentable. I felt that the pictures were a misrepresentation of the cars true condition and I was expecting a higher standard than what I got. I ended up buying a vehicle elsewhere. Buyer beware. They didn't refund the money I spent to have the car shipped. I leave two stars because the staff was at least friendly. But overall this was my first and last experience with Carmax. Unimpressive and lots of hype. read more

I was initially in the market for a new car because my son's car died and I'd been driving it, while allowing him to drive mine in school. Carmax came highly recommended and I started searching online and then received a call. What I didn't know at the time is that the people I was communicating with, weren't local and that would have been helpful to know. Anyways, I was approved and they accepted the down payment I offered. I was encouraged to do an Express Pickup, which I'll never do again, but all went seamless and I was in/ out in 20 mins with my new car. I didn't absolutely love the car, but didn't hate it either. So, I left and within a week, I started to notice a lingering odor, when driving it sounded like train cars, ricketing toward the back of the car and the brakes were making noises. I called Carmax and wanted to bring it in. I was told they were backlogged for about 3 weeks and I said I didn't want to wait that long and they sent me to a car repair shop they partner with. I was skeptical because I was like well this is their company, they probably won't be forthright with any issues. Boy, was I ever wrong. He called and said there was a minor issue with the brakes, but, brought a more concerning issue to my attention. I returned the car the next day and we tried looking for another car. The second time, I found a car out of Memphis, I was told it would be about 7-14 day lead, but in the interim they were kind enough to provide me with a loaner car. After about a week and a half, I inquired on the vehicle because I'd been watching and saw it had arrived almost 4 days later. After some back and forth, I was told that, that car arrived and passed inspections, but it arrived without the title and they couldn't locate it. (Heavy sigh). So again, we are back at square one. So, this time I reached out to the Store Manager, and he was extremely nice. He connected me with a local saleswoman, an amazing woman named Tammy. She and I were looking at cars and she found one, only problem was it was in SC and this is when the hurricane was pounding the area. I told her I didn't want a car from there. So, when I was about yo give up and was beyond frustrated. Tammy called and said she'd found a car for me in Alabama. She sent all the information over and I instantly fell in love. She started the process, I was approved and she said it would be about a week before the car arrived, but again, they were going to allow me to remain in a loaner during this time. So, two days later she called and the car was there. This time, I did a test drive, I inspected the car. I had my dad check it out and I was satisfied and moved forward with purchasing. I've had the car about two weeks now and I don't have any complaints. I will be calling them because the brakes are squeaking a bit, but otherwise this has been the most traumatic, chaotic and stressful car buying experience and even with all those emotions Carmax and their team remained committed to my satisfaction, righting wrongs and ensuring I was always taken care of. From Sales, to the Business Office to Service. I was not in the best of situations, but I recognize things happen and I tried to remain calm and professional and they returned the same. I would recommend Carmax hands down, in light of my issues and that staff is definitely one of a kind. I tip my hat to the management and staff at the Rivergate location and especially Tammy, Ms. Helen and Steve. read more

Bought a beautiful fully loaded 2016 Dodge Challenger on Saturday. As we were leaving the lot one of the car porters decided to drive too close to us and knocked into the passenger side mirror and scuffed it. WHILE WE WERE STILL ON THE LOT. Took it back on Monday evening to have it buffed out. When they returned they car the manager stated they could not get the scuff out. It was then that my boyfriend noticed that there is now a 6" horizontal gash in the middle of the front bumper. It looks to be intentional. Ridiculous! The manager stated they would "try" to paint it. Um...no. You couldn't even buff out a scuff, how are you going to get a gash out of the front bumper?? I will update this as this unfolds, but there is no way I'm letting them touch our beautiful car again!! read more

I'd had decent luck with Carmax in the past and started my recent car hunting journey at this location. The sales people at Carmax have always been great to me and this time was no exception, but their "it's our way or the highway" mentality is pretty annoying. They gave me an absolutely laughable trade quote on my car (the lowest among all dealers I went to), and much of their inventory is overpriced. I ended up buying a brand new Subaru Outback for about the same price as they're charging for 2009 models with 20-40k miles. In March, I had a friend purchase a brand new Nissan Cube for about $500 less than what Carmax was charging for a 2009 Cube with 30k miles on it. So, people, please do your research and don't automatically assume used cars are always a better deal. If you look around it is possible to get new for the same or lower price. read more

Bought a 17 Civic Si during August 2018. Very polite service with the exception of the lack of communication during the transfer process. Basically after 7 days I had to call to find out where the vehicle was only to find out that it was already at the dealership. Love the vehicle but when I see the Carmax Quality sticker on the window I'm expecting that the vehicle has been thoroughly inspected and checked for any all defects and then so defects are noted and relayed to the customer. Was it done with this vehicle? No, absolutely not. The vehicle had wreck damage to the underside and body damage to the roof. The damage was cleverly disguised with magic Carmax wax and some tape. Unfortunately for me I didn't notice it until I took it to a detailer and they pointed it out. Now I have repairs to do. I've purchased three vehicles from Carmax and I'm pretty sure this is the last one. read more

I had a great experience at the Rivergate Nashville Carmax as I did at Carmax Oklahoma City a few years ago. Very quick and easy. Nick Campbell was especially professional and attentive spending a lot of time with me going over features of my Toyota Highlander. My drive to North Carolina two days later took me through the Tail of the Dragon, and the Highlander was smooth as silk. I did note, however that the brakes were shimmying pretty badly and thought maybe the rotors needed resurfacing. I texted Nick about it and brought the car in a week later. The sales process went great. My salesman was awesome during that process. But after the sale, forget about getting any help with issues. I initially got their Maxcare service and I ended up canceling it before I had had my vehicle for 30 days. On July 2, 2022 I purchased a car from this location. After having the vehicle for 2 days the engine light came on. I called Carmax service center and they told me to bring the car in so that they can see what was going on with it. The car was taken to Rivergate Muffler and it was diagnosed with something that had to do with the ignition. I picked the car up and has it for about 3 days and the car completely stopped on 7/22. I had to get it towed from where it was back to CarMax. I specifically told Tyler and my service rep that I didn't want it to go back to Rivergate Muffler. They told me that they would be able to get to it on 8/8. My car sat at this location for 2 1/2 weeks before I was notified that Rivergate Muffler had my car again. I was upset at this point I called Customer Relations at this point. I picked the car up again and engine light came on for the 3rd time. I personally took it to Rivergate Muffler and the code was reading gas leak. I then called the store and told them that I was taking it to a Kia Dealer at this point. Damion with Customer Relations has not been very helpful. Tyler, Troy and Trevor who are managers at this store are not professional. I was told by Troy that I might as well keep the car because no one is going to finance me again. Then Trevor told me on 9/17 to pay for a Lyft to get to pick up the rental because they didn't want to give me a loaner again. I never got to take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee. At this time they are wanting to appraise the car which I know I'm not gone get back what It was financed for. I went to this location and was taking a look at cars and I found a great Ford Escape for a really great price. I left the store-AFTER having them run my credit-that day to compare this car to others before committing to such a big purchase. My salesman told me that in the meantime he would hold it for me and I would not have to worry about anyone taking it while I looked around. The very next day, I called them to talk financing and to make sure the car was still being held for. The associate said the car was still held for me, and I told her that I would be giving them another call to sort out a few more details about the purchase. WHEN I CALLED THEM BACK.....
