I love the idea of CarMax. I love that CarMax actually has a lot right here in Central Indiana. I've recently found myself in need of a new vehicle, and I've been exploring several of Indy's auto dealers. As part of the process, I've been to this location of CarMax twice to explore vehicles I found on their website. My needs, because of my disability, are very specific. Unless I try to go to a van (which I considered), I'm mostly looking for a 2-door automatic with enough space that I can slide my wheelchair into the backseat. Simple? Not so much. Coupes aren't trendy these days, and the coupes that are around are either older, high mileage, or way too small for the wheelchair need. If you know this CarMax, you know it's a rather large lot right off the corner of 96th and Gray Road. As you likely know, East 96th Street has several car dealers and it's a great place to start if looking for a car from a Hyundai to a Bentley. CarMax does one of these things I despise, first of all. You can't actually access the lot without sales support. I got the feeling that most people contact them prior to arrival, but I tend to be a "show up" person - that's especially true right now since I'm dependent on a ride and never know when that will happen. When it does, I go. Both times I've been here, I've had specific cars in mind. However, I've also explained my needs. While I accept that wheelchair using drivers are somewhat in the minority, I am always a little baffled when a sales associate can't comprehend the idea of a 2-door automatic. They do exist. When I come on your lot with specific vehicles in mind, simply let me see the vehicles. I got the vibe they felt I was wasting their time. Was this a bad experience? Not really. Was it a good experience? Not really. It was just sort of "meh." Despite a couple visits, I've sort of scratched CarMax off my list. Maybe if I were buying exclusively online, it would be idea. But, as a driver with a wheelchair I just have to know the wheelchair will work. So, I have to show up in person. Once I did that, this place really lost me. I know there are people who swear by CarMax. More power to them, but as someone who needs a little extra in the buying experience this is definitely not a place that seemed to want my business. read more

This was my second vehicle purchase through CarMax. My first experience was great, which is why I came back. The first car I purchased was in excellent condition, and I never really had any issues with it. This time around, though, the process started off really frustrating. I had a vehicle shipped in at the end of April and was originally told it would be "ready to drive" sometime between May 2nd and May 7th. The app showed it had shipped, but a week later it still showed the car hadn't arrived, and nobody from CarMax proactively communicated any delays or updates. I had to keep calling myself trying to figure out what was going on. I was eventually told the car wouldn't be ready until May 12th, which became an issue because my trade-in offer expired on the 11th. When I went into the store, I was basically told I'd have to restart the entire trade-in process because they couldn't extend the offer. At that point I was extremely frustrated and honestly considered walking away from the deal completely. Then, 30 minutes after leaving the dealership, I got a call asking when I was coming in to test drive the car. Turns out the vehicle had actually been ready, and I'd been given incorrect information by the store. The entire experience completely changed once I worked with Lisa. She was absolutely phenomenal and honestly saved this deal. If I had worked with her from the beginning, I truly believe this would've been a smooth two-day process instead of a stressful two-week one. She was knowledgeable, communicative, kind, and made everything feel effortless. If it weren't for Lisa, I probably would not have completed this purchase or recommended CarMax afterward. CarMax doesn't abide by their policies. They do shady business. I do want to say on our first visit to CarMax we bought an Audi, that the first guy that helped us was great. Thank you Allante for helping us. Unfortunately we had to return the Audi because it had issues. On our second visit to CarMax to return the Audi and purchase the Tesla the second guy that helped us sat directly behind Allante's desk and because it was Allante's day off, he had to cover for him without any commission treated us differently. He's about 6'2 with black glasses. He was very bland towards us as if he didn't want to help us. Unfriendly and judgmental. He wouldn't allow us to test drive nor take a look at the second car before purchasing it. Which we thought was very rude, unprofessional, and unusual, but we needed a car so we went ahead and purchased the Tesla. The Tesla ended up having charging issues. It wouldn't charge to full capacity. So unfortunately time wasted again and we needed to exchange it yet again. On our third visit to CarMax to return the Tesla we needed to purchase a different Tesla. They had no issues buying the Tesla back. But when it came to repurchasing a third car this time they wouldn't sell us a car. They said we were banned from doing business with and wouldn't give us a reason. They left my small child, my wife, and I without a car. If they didn't want to do business with me why did they purchase the Tesla back from me without allowing me to purchase another car. Extremely bad business. They have no morals. They wouldn't even give me an explanation to why. The manager David was extremely discriminating. When my wife said that she would purchase the car, he said no she probably won't be able to get approved either! Without even checking her credit or anything. He assumed just by looking at her! We have never felt so discriminated against. I have tried to call Carmax customer relations and they even said they don't know why we were banned. I'll start off saying I did not buy a car at CarMax...this time. I got financing to buy a car. I got into the car I wanted and I test drove it. Then I came to the realization that the hints being dropped on me by the universe -- from sources everywhere -- indicated it's just not the time to buy the car I was going to buy. So why the five star review? I got honest advice from my salesman, all the way through the deal. Buying a car is a non-trivial financial decision; you want a person of integrity on the other side of the desk. And that's what I got. I found a BMW z4 that, while it's not the M2 I've always wanted, was one of the lowest priced, best condition vehicles of its kind available; in fact the price was "jump on this now" reasonable. So I decided to inquire. My sales consultant was Quinn Luckie. I walked in, intending to buy a BMW z4 *if* I could get a decent offer on my current car; a Volkswagen GTI. Carmax offered me a very fair price, and I wouldn't have to deal with 19 year olds wanting to take test drives, ruining my clutch in the process, so we had a deal, on the spot. I didn't want to let the z4 get away so I was willing to transfer the vehicle, get financing, and sell my car to CarMax on the spot. Quinn slowed me down (here's where the integrity slips in). He informed me that the process -- since I was transferring the car from another state -- was a bit different than I'm used to, so I backed off. After all, the car I wanted was reserved for me. So I went home, found a loan with the best rate, researched insurance, and got ready to show up a little better informed when it was actually time to do business, and then waited for the car to arrive. That took a while. CarMax addressed that. When I showed up for the test drive, the offer on my GTI hadn't changed a bit, so everything was in order. The z4 was spotless and ready to go. I was excited when we put the car in motion but things just didn't line up. Believe it or not, part of it was I didn't feel like the z4 had the fun factor I was looking for (?!!), so my partner and I decided to think it over for the evening. And I passed. I can be smarter with my money right now. Wait for an M2. Quinn gave me a hint about an M4 -- and I looked -- but I'm not going to put him through two car transfers just to balk. It's just not the time, right now. But when it is time, I very well may try Carmax again. For now, there's a hell of a roadster available for sale and you should jump on it if you're looking for one. I purchased a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 35 AMG from CarMax in Indianapolis in April 2025. At no point during the sale was I informed that the vehicle was equipped with summer-only performance tires, which are unsafe in cold temperatures and winter conditions--especially in Indiana. I only discovered this after nearly losing control of the vehicle in light snow. This is a serious safety issue that should have been clearly disclosed at the time of sale. After contacting CarMax Service, a representative (Victoria) scheduled an appointment to measure the tires for replacement. During that call, I specifically asked about cost and was explicitly told there would be no cost to me. The appointment was later canceled via voicemail, and CarMax reversed its position without explanation, stating that tire replacement was my responsibility. Customer Relations and corporate offices have since refused to address the failure to disclose, the safety risk, or the service department's prior commitment. Instead, they have repeatedly upheld the denial without addressing these facts. This experience reflects poor transparency, inconsistent communication, and a lack of accountability for a legitimate safety concern. I would strongly caution buyers to ask very specific questions about tire type and vehicle safety equipment before purchasing from this location. read more

I purchased a vehicle in April. By June the vehicle was having issues. Took it to AutoZone to get hooked up to the tester. Listed many things wrong with it. First was sparkplugs and coils. Called and told the representative what was going on. The mileage, Etc. She told me the vehicle was covered. Made an appointment to bring it in. On the day of the appointment they called and said they would not be covering anything because more than 4000 miles were now on the vehicle. Only after providing proof they said they would fix the vehicle, did they agree to fix it... Two weeks in the "shop." Find out they balanced the tires, replaced the fuel injectors, all kinds of stuff. Didnt replace the sparkplugs though. Which they confirmed their tester showed as well. After getting the vehicle back, literally there was no change in the performance issues it was experiencing previously. Desperate to never go back there again, I ordered plugs and coils and replaced them myself. After taking off the cover, hoses, etc. I could see where there were baby clothes actually in the bottom of the engine. Car is driving fine now. But there is NO WAY this vehicle had any "inspection" done on it let alone the "125 point inspection" CARMAX claims. read more

The staff is friendly and helpful but the car we bought was a Lemon with a capital L. During the first 90 days, 5 seperate issues developed all of which we covered by the 90 day warranty. One of the issues was the power steering. We then set out on a trip and 20 miles outside Ft. Wayne, the power steering went out again. I drove it to the local Carmax which quickly gave us a loaner and we were on our way. They were friendly and vey helpful. That was 23 days ago and they still have the car. We cannot trust this car for traveling which is why we bought it so we requested that Carmax allow us to trade it in for full purchase price. They said "no" and we are stuck with a very problematic car. Carmax has covered the cost of all these issues and we have not paid any repair costs. The staff is also very friendly. But the bottom line is that the car we bought is totally unsatisfactory. I should also mention that the price they offered for a trade-in of our old car was way below KBB. I took it to another dealer and they were much more generous so we sold it to them. Despite the additional sales tax, we came out well ahead. read more

Came with a family member to CarMax today, it was my first time here. I didn't know what to expect but it seems like they handle a lot of people but somehow flow people through their process. When you walk in they have an appointment display which shows your name and you check in with the "host". We did have an appointment and the person we were coming to meet wasn't far and heard her when she said her name and came rushing over. The car we were test driving was parked up front and she quickly asked for drivers license so we could test drive. I do like that we didn't have to wait around. That's always a pet peeve when buying a car, I feel you are always sitting and waiting but not here. Things moved quickly. I also like they didn't test drive the car with me. Another pet peeve of mj be when they wanna ride with you. Once back she decided to move forward they quickly started the process. Again everything moved quickly and they have all these little stations but the person that we started with is the person we were with the entire time. They have tons of people working and it seems very efficient here. The cons: if you used to luxury car places this isn't it. There is no free coffee, water etc. there are vending machines. It could feel a bit impersonal but you are getting a good deal likely. So it's a trade off. As I told my family member once you have the car you can go to the dealership moving forward so it's all fine! read more

After researching our vehicle for weeks, we found the perfect one in Wisconsin! There were no other vehicles around with the specific features, in our price range, low mileage, no accidents and one owner. So we had it shipped to Carmax Greenwood. It was the worse location we could have chosen. When we went to test drive the 1st thing we noticed was the low tire tread. When spending almost 40k on a vehicle, who wants to buy new tires a couple of months later. Once mentioned to the sales rep, she agreed to measure and said since we were so close the Carmax standard she would mention to the manager to see if they could be replaced. Shane Sherrill looked at us and shook his head no. I said to him the tires will need to be replaced in a couple of months. Shane's response was we have a standard, the car must not be for you. I told him I had the vehicle shipped, he then said I'll refund your money. Shane already had it made up in his mind he wasn't going to do anything to help us, nor did he want us to have the vehicle. When my husband asked to see the standard, he told him he doesn't need to show him anything. Since we over heard Shane belittling the female sales rep asking if she knew how to measure the tires, she came back with 2 different measurements we asked Shane to measure. He initially refused. After getting in my husband's face, trying to create a scene and embarrass him, Shane went to measure. He stormed back in saying the original tool the rep was using was broken. At that point he decided to show my husband the standard. When my husband asked if he could keep the pamphlet or take a picture, Shane told him to use common sense. He continued to get closer to my husband's face as if he wanted to intimidate or provoke him. The remaining staff kept their heads down as if this was his normal unprofessional, nasty, rude, condescending behavior. I asked corporate to run the footage in the store and I have no idea how Shane still has a job, let alone a management position. We ended up having the vehicle shipped to the Indianapolis location where the tires were replaced and completed our purchase a week later. TIEARA. Our experience with Carmax was great, and was great the last time we used them in a different location... Unfortunately it was great up until the very end when we got our paperwork and as we were signing the documents, including an affidavit, which is an oath that can be used in court... Our affidavit had the wrong address city and ZIP Code on it. In my mind I thought, not a big deal we'll just get it changed and move on. The person doing our paperwork, whose name was Tieara, seemed put out at the fact that I noticed our address was wrong and went in the back to talk to her boss. She said I must've put it in wrong when I put in my original paperwork. There's no way I put my wrong address in. When she came out she said our name was correct in the system, and then it would be OK for me to sign the document with the wrong address on it. I refused to sign, as an affidavit is the paper equivalent of an oath. When I told her I wouldn't sign the paperwork, her demeanor changed and she became "snippy" and said "OK then we can get you your keys back and cancel the deal." I asked to have her boss come out and talk to us and she went and back, came out a couple of times before she finally showed up with the correct paperwork for us to sign, including the affidavit with the correct address city state and zip. It turns out that ALL the paperwork had the wrong City, county, and zip on it, but the street number was correct. I don't know if TIEARA was in a hurry, having a bad day, or what but that was not professional and NOT LEGAL most of all. Was in the market for a car, I was looking new or low miles used. CarMax has a huge nationwide selection of used cars, some with very low miles. What's nice is everything can be found online and adding filters is very easy. If the desired car is far enough away, you may have to pay for shipping to see it, carmax will do a walk around on the car if you ask bf it is sent. I found one of interest on the lot and was able to reserve a test drive online. They also have an easy online way to price your trade in, and will buy whether or not you are buying there. When I went in for my test drive at the Indianapolis store, I was paired with Laurie. She was very professional and assisted me getting ready for a test drive as well as answered any questions I had. I have been without my car now for almost 3 weeks while they get it repaired. they have lied to me about it and also did not give me a loaner. they tried to make it right by after week 3 to get me a rental only after me getting mad. Then because it is a holiday weekend, no rentals available. they are honoring to fix everything wrong, but they don't communicate at all. stay away from Greenwood Carmax. Had better experience with Carvana and never an issue with the cars being junk. Also was shown a report when I bought it that there was never any accidents. After the return policy was up I bought a Carfax report. There were two accidents reported. The Carmax manager said oh well that happens sometimes that the report won't show that. I went with my mother to sell one of her cars. She was prepared for it to be a horrible experience, but I was pleasantly surprised by the whole process. We had made an appointment online a few days prior, but when we went to the check-in desk, they couldn't find our appointment. They eventually told us it didn't matter and that they could have someone evaluate her car within a few minutes. The inspector was very nice and thorough, and he had us do all the touching of the car (opening the doors, the trunk, etc.) due to COVID-19. After he was finished, we went inside and waited. Another associate took the car for a quick test drive, and then they came over with a piece of paper detailing the offer. It was higher than what we'd been quoted by Carvana, which was a nice surprise. The thing that took the longest was the paperwork piece, but they had the waiting room chairs spread out for social distancing and we didn't feel uncomfortable waiting. I would bring a book and expect to spend about 1.5 hours there if you go to sell a car, depending on how busy they are. read more

CarMax is definitely the way to buy cars. When my old Saturn died, I went to three used car lots immediately and was treated terribly at two. They wanted to run a credit check before showing me any vehicles and the third didn't have what I wanted. I didn't have tons of time since my car was done, so I decided to try online shopping. Since you can put in the mileage, year, model & price desired and how far of a distance you want to be searched, I was able to find the car I wanted, at the price I was able to pay in less than a week. I set an appointment to test drive my car as well as a few others. There was never any pushiness to buy something more expensive and the one month guarantee made me feel safe that I wasn't buying a lemon. The lady that did my paperwork made everything clear and simple, including information about the BMV. This was literally one of the easiest shopping experiences I've ever had. read more

DO NOT BUY FROM CARMAX! This company scams customers! I found a Tesla on their website. When I spoke to their salesperson, he assured me that this car had the full self drive (FSD) package, and stated that this is why the car was $3,000 more than a brand new Tesla. Upon test drive, he told me that FSD was disabled during the test drive, but would be available to me once the car was purchased. After I purchased the car, I called Tesla and they confirmed that this car never had FSD. Carmax LIED about the vehicle and now they are refusing to do anything to fix this situation. I put thousands of dollars down and got the service plan and everything you can think of went wrong with my car and the service center said nothing was covered. They pride on a "125 - point inspection" and that's clearly a lie . I'm not sure if it's because I'm black so that's why I haven't had great service but yeah . I still stand by my first review with regard to having a vehicle appraised. They were professional, helpful, and non-aggressive. However, looking at it from the buyer side, my experience this time was very different. I'm giving an averaged rating - 5 stars for appraisals, 3 stars for test drives. I will caveat this with - my initial impressions were partially colored by coming here right after going to Tom Wood Subaru. Comparing the experience is akin to having a steak dinner at Lonestar Steakhouse versus St. Elmo's. Both get you fed, but one is head and shoulders more enjoyable and luxurious than the other. We walked inside and I expected we would be descended upon like locusts. Instead, all we heard was crickets. We had a test drive scheduled for 6 p.m. but arrived at 5:30, assuming someone would be able to help us. Nope. The person they assigned to us was finishing up with someone else, so we had to wait. There were four people behind the welcome counter, so I have no idea what they do or why we had to wait, but it's very weird in a place that SELLS THINGS that we had to wait 15 minutes for someone to sell us something. Inside, the place is lousy with harsh fluorescent lights. The restrooms are absolutely disgusting. They offer free coffee, but charge for sodas. It was nice that they have a vending machine. They also have a huge kids play area with a ton of toys and a door to keep the kids (and noise) inside. The test drive was fine, but it is very weird that they will not let you drive it out of the parking lot and that they have a gate where employees have to fob in and out with the cars. So Michelle, our salesperson, drove it off the lot and then we played musical chairs at the edge of their parking lot. Another weird thing - the keys to each car are kept in a large lockbox that hangs on the outside of the car window. It probably wouldn't stop someone from purchasing a car, but it is very ugly. THREE YEARS WITHOUT AND I FINALLY BOUGHT A CAR ON FRIDAY! Something the other day just clicked in my head when I was waiting for the bus out in the cold and was in a rush to go somewhere that I finally said that "I had enough." I really needed something that could let me just come and go as I please. So after some investigating and deep thought of my financial abilities and some budgeting, I decided that it is now or never. I got on the CarMax app and immediately saw the car I wanted, which was this beautiful 2013 Red Ford Escape and just went for it. I went on ahead and sent in the pre-qualification for financing and within minutes they had a plan and Jake from CarMax hit me up on the phone. After a long discussion talking about the history of the car, explaining to me the financing process and setting me up for the best deal we could pull out for me, we set up an appointment to go test drive, have a look and buy the car. Jake even gave his personal number too and said if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to text me. Low and behold, I had a question the night before Thanksgiving and asked him and he had a thorough answer back within 15 minutes. The morning I arrived with my friend, we went through the process of test driving and setting up some information. The process honestly took about an hour and it was such an easy experience. I didn't have insurance, so I even was able to set it up there and scooch on out. They gave a lot of thorough information that was very easy to understand and make you feel very comfortable.
