Came in to sell our vehicle at the Hillside, Illinois facility. We received a quote within 30 minutes and made the decision to sell. the amount was fair. We have been now waiting over an hour and a half for the Business Office to pull the plates and give us a check. The vehicle has no loan due or any attachments to the title. The individuals in the office are taking people out of order and are not helpful in explaining the delay. Very disappointed and would not recommend. read more

Very disappointed with CarMax Hillside service department. Had an appointment because the car I bought there was suddenly getting horrible mileage. The service rep got in the car, turned it on, didn't see any warning lights and said, "There's nothing I can do for you." That was it. I called the service department when I got home and received equally poor customer service. Basically, "we can run a check on the engine, but if there's nothing wrong, we'll still charge you." You would be better off going to AutoZone. read more

I have sold to CarMax twice now and both times was given a beyond fair offer - well above what anyone else would give me. This time, I went in with an appointment for an appraisal, but I was interested in learning about the buying process with them, too. I was paired with Adam S. who is working at this location while going to college (as he shared with me in conversation). I was shocked when he told me he was 19 and in school - Adam was professional, polished, and respectful while still being down-to-Earth, approachable, and easy going...his approach and professionalism was well beyond 19! While my vehicle was being appraised, Adam walked me through how they can get any vehicles within most of Illinois sent to their shop for free; what getting titles might be like if buying a car that is shipped in from out-of-state; and what their warranties are like. There was no hard sell: he just asked the relevant questions and showed me what was available, being knowledgable and invested without being too "sales-y." The whole time, I felt at ease and comfortable...and as someone who has worked in the auto industry in the past, I gotta say that he was one of the best sales consultants I've worked with in 20 years. The offer I got was easily the best I have received - above Carvana and all the other dealerships I've visited. Ultimately, I decided not to buy or sell from/to CarMax as the prices on gently used Subarus are about the same as buying new, so I went with a 2024 Forester at a Subaru dealership and traded to them for a fair price. That said, I was so impressed with Adam and the whole process at this CarMax location that I wanted to leave a review. Go see Adam, he's great! read more

It took me over 3 hours for them to just file the paperwork, not including the time it took for them to do the test drive. Worst service I have ever had. We went to the CM in Hillside last summer to buy a Jeep. We knew what we wanted. The young salesman was a little full of himself and not friendly. He asked a lot of financial questions right away. We went to test drive a Jeep on site that was perfect. The salesman had no idea how to take the top off. He was sort of a jerk about it, acting like it was no big deal. I absolutely wanted to drive it with the top off before buying it to see if I liked it, having never owned a Jeep. My husband had to get the manual and figure out the top while the salesman stood there. Again, he wasn't helpful but also he wasn't friendly or funny about it either, maybe he was embarrassed. We left. Didn't buy it. Went on Carvana and bought the same car. THEY were wonderful to work with. Friendly and organized. Great experience with Carvana. read more

Date: 8-February-2020 Time: Evening (after 7pm) Grade: F- So my girlfriend needed to sell her late mom's car. I came to get her car appraised back in late 2019 at their location in Naperville. We just wanted to stop by here because we were in the neighborhood and did not think it really mattered which one we went to. We were greeted by a teenage schmuck, who looked like he barely got his balls recently dropped with that cocky, condescending attitude of "I f*cking know everything", we explained why we were here and gave a backstory of the car as he was going through the questions, he finally took the car keys and took it in for the inspection. It did not take long for them to do the inspection, we went back to his desk and he gave us the estimate of what CarMax was going to give us. This one came in $500 under the one Naperville location has given us. I have brought it up to him, that the one in Naperville offered us more and before anyone jumps on me, yes, I am well aware of their 7 day/x number of miles policy, but this was an emotional time for your customer, who recently lost her mother, and yes, I understand we did not have to sell the car to them, and yes, I got his explanation that they saw some other b*llsh*t type of an excuse that there were some damage the Naperville location did not notice, but $500 was not gonna make a difference for you (CarMax), you (CarMax) are gonna double the price of that car and you will make that for sure, you, the schmuck, should have called the manager, it should have been handled differently. Now you, as in CarMax, are getting a sh*tty review and a person who will bad mouth your company for the rest of his eternity, never buy or sell cars to/from you EVER. Was it worth $500? Could have just honored the price Naperville location offered! F-! ***Note: And I am sure, I am going to get a canned response from someone at that facility to contact them directly... Had an appointment with Josh. When I showed up on time I was passed to Chris because Josh was still with a customer. What's the point of appointments? Noticed the car I was interested in is priced about $2,000 higher than elsewhere. Was then told by manager Irving they don't use online websites NADA and KBB to price their cars. I asked what is the point of having AutoCheck protection when that price is based on 110% of NADA. This vehicle was about 113-115% of NADA so a customer wouldn't be fully protected. Not to mention my insurance would only pay NADA/KBB value if I needed to make a claim, not the price I paid CarMax. I had thought CarMax had prices that were reflective of what the car is actually worth based on neutral third party websites but I was wrong. Still just another used car salesman. read more

I recently (March 2022) had a very bad and disturbing experience attempting to purchase a vehicle at the CarMax dealership in Hillside, IL. I created an online account at CarMax.com to reserve a vehicle and complete a credit application. The credit application was approved (800+ credit score), and I reserved a vehicle for a 24-hour test drive. CarMax advertises the 24-hour test drive on countless commercials on TV. After reserving the test drive, I get a text from the dealership saying they were looking forward to my arrival. The first bad sign was that the text I received had the wrong day for my test drive. I corrected them. Once I arrived at the dealership, they said that had me scheduled for a 20 minute test drive. I corrected them again saying that I reserved a 24-hour test drive online. Then they said they had to verify my auto insurance, but could not because my insurance company's office was closed. When I reserved the test drive and completed the credit application online I submitted my insurance documentation along with all other requested documentation, but for some reason the never got around to verifying it. After telling me that I could not test drive the vehicle, the manager kept my insurance information and said they would verify my insurance the following day. Once verified, I could test drive the vehicle. The next day, I never heard from them. I reached out them and they told me again that they never got around to verifying my insurance so I still could not test drive the vehicle. They said I needed to make another appointment for another day. The whole time dealing with the staff, face to face and via text, I always felt as if I was not being treated like I was a serious buyer. How much more serious can I get then filling out a credit application and getting approved. The next step is to test drive the vehicle, but again it was as if they didn't want me to or care about going through the steps to sell me a car. So now I have a wasted inquiry on my credit report, and still looking for a car. Avoid this dealership and their extremely unprofessional staff. read more

Vince got to the bottom of it, there was nothing wrong with my title or a lien on my car, there was just not an updated report in the system that they run the VIN number through. Would give it no stars if I could. The sales guy lied to me about not being able to test drive the vehicles because of COVID. I was only able to see it for a few seconds and he opened the door so I couldn't driver's side mirror which was damaged on the outside of it. It was also pulling to the left. When I finally noticed it I called to schedule a date to get it fixed, they kept telling me I could only come before 10am Monday-Friday and I don't get off work till 3:30. When I finally took off to bring it in they didn't even look at it. They just ordered the part and said we'll call you when it's ready. After getting the runaround for a few weeks, they finally called me in. I also only have 30 days to return it so I felt like they were dragging it out. The manager of the store came off concerned at first but when he found out I talked to corporate he became very condescending and pushy. When I was talking to him, the sales guy that sold me the vehicle was across the room looking at me and giggling with two other people. I asked if I could test drive some other vehicles and he would put it off like are you sure this is one you want. I wouldn't know for sure until I test drive but but they never gave me a chance to. I went to a different Carmax and drove 2 different vehicles right away versus none since none at hillside. When I finally decided I didn't want to do business with them because of the service he started speaking really loud so everyone could hear and told my mom, whose walks with a cane , he would push her in a rolling chair so it'll be faster to leave. He also made me feel as if my downpayment of $700 was nothing because he kept saying, oh well just give you the cash very sarcastic. I felt very belittled and embarrassed. I would not recommend anyone go to Carmax in Hillside. Also the bathrooms were disgusting. Water was leaking from the toilet and the handicapped stall had a regular chair in it and tissue with feces on the floor. read more

My transmission died on me and I was in the market for a new car. My mom purchased her car from Carmax 3 years ago with no problems. I read the bad reviews and heard a lot of negative things, so I hesitated before I finally decided to come to them. My credit is not good, but I still didn't want to put down a huge down payment with high monthly payments. I wanted the Nissan Altima. This 1 dealership wanted me to put down $3,200 and pay $475 a month! I couldn't do it, it wasn't in my budget. My mom worked with Rose Walton in the past, so we asked for her. Rose is great! She made me feel comfortable throughout the whole process. I didn't want to spend my life here, so she worked with me online while I was at work to process all of the paperwork. I was in and out in 2 hours. I ended up getting the Hyundai Sonata. Low mileage and great on gas. A full tank of gas lasts me for 11 days! $1,500 down and monthly payments I can afford. It's not a Nissan Altima, but I am happy with my purchase. As a matter of fact, it's bigger than the Altima! One thing though: your experience can be good or bad depending on the car you get. You must do your research before purchasing! Don't blame Carmax if you get a lemon for a car. Research, research, research! read more

I had a pretty perfect car-buying experience at CarMax a few weekends ago. I heavily researched the vehicle I was interested in purchasing, and found several available through various CarMax outlets. Ultimately, I found what I was hoping for at the Tinley Park location and filled out the online form to have it transferred to Hillside. The website was very easy to use, and I was able to select the exact details and features I was looking for using the tools available to me. Within the hour, I received a phone call from a salesperson who was polite, helpful and answered all my questions. The vehicle arrived about 2 days later, and I scheduled an appointment for a test drive on Saturday morning. My wife and I took turns test driving and inspecting the vehicle while we had our old car appraised for value of a trade-in. Now here's where things get a little controversial. There's a lot of talk online that due to the fact that CarMax does not haggle or pressure in pricing, people end up paying more. I don't feel like that was the case at all. We came in knowing exactly what we'd pay and received a very fair value for our trade-in to offset part of the cost of the new vehicle. Do I feel like we would have found a better deal somewhere else? No. The car we were looking at, with all the features, and all the bells and whistles simply wasn't available anywhere else for a price that even came close. Maybe we could have negotiated down a couple of thousand dollars at a typical dealership, but nowhere near the sticker price CarMax had. Coupled together with the trade-in value of my old car, I feel like we got a great deal on exactly what we wanted. The salesperson was helpful and answered all our questions throughout the process and never once did we feel uncomfortable or pressured. If I had anything at all negative to say it would be that they could use more agents to complete the paperwork signing process because we waited nearly 45 minutes for one to become available, but I guess being busy is a good problem to have. I would highly recommend my CarMax experience and should I be in the market for another used car in the future, I will definitely use their services again. read more

My family has purchased two cars from CarMax and overall it has been a good experience. Our customer service this last time did an OK job and the car has been running well. The only problem was when we picked up the car...they supposedly cleaned it...but if they did .... it was done poorly. All businesses should know that it is that the last bit of follow thru is as important as the initial contact. I should also mention that they do not accept credit cards...a minor inconvenience but a policy that they might want to re-think at some time. read more

In the past I swore by Carmax...bought 2 great cars there and was very happy doing business with them. This time...not so much. Although the sales rep was awesome, Carmax standards have fallen. Now the car we bought wasn't cheap...almost $18,000. Tires were pretty bald in the front ( due to never rotating according to my mechanic) and alignment was way off. ( letting go of the wheel immediately pulled way to the right.) We were told everything was in specs....seriously? Bought it anyway and when we went to pick it up....they did nothing but vacuum it. everything else was filthy. Sorry Carmax...will have to think real hard about ever doing business with you again. read more

What a fantastic shopping experience! I'm used to getting the run around and nothing but BS when it comes to car dealers but everything there was as advertised. No haggle, no headaches, and no lies. My wife and I were interested in a 2016 Sedona and we emailed them. We heard back from Elvis and he actually read the part that says we prefer email or text and that's the only way he contacted us. No annoying calls!! We setup a time to come test drive it and when we decided to come in earlier, he let us know he was busy and that Cody could help us. Cody did an amazing job making us comfortable with no pressure to buy something. We ended up test driving the Sedona and loved it but the interior was a little dirty. We asked they give it a cleaning detail and get some stains up and they did a heck of a job cleaning it up to our standards. We ended up buying the van and are very happy about it. They also had a very fair price on my trade in considering the condition it was in. Great job CARMAX! read more

I go in check the computers and find a BMW I want to test drive. I had to ask the front desk for someone to help. They have a big building with clearly labeled areas, which impresses when you drive up. They also have a pretty clear online process. Unfortunately the clear processes and good customer service ends there. No one at this location smiled (with the exception of the very first greeter at the entrance who was helpful), and when asked for updates on the process (which lasted about two hours - and it's very unclear to me why it took two hours to sell a car that we had pre-appraised before we came), were met with blank faces and non-answers. We decided to sell our car to CarMax because we thought it would be an easy, smooth process. That did not prove to be true, and nor did the customer service meet expectations. read more

I went to carmax when I totaled my car and one of my family members said they can hook me up. Worse decision I ever made. At the time I thought saving a few thousand would make my anxiety go down but its not worth it (should of bought new). My biggest issue is with their repair department. When I bought the car 2 tires were leaking... they said they could only find something wrong with one. The other one continued to leak and I took it to my mechanic who found a nail within 5 minutes. I have had to take my car there multiple times for the same issues cause they say they couldn't find anything or dismiss my concern. When I bought the car there was issues with the air conditioning which they ensured they fixed... year later had to take it back to fix the pumps (which they took over a week to do). Which might of took longer if I didnt file a complaint with someone higher up (who did a good job taking care of it but it shouldnt have gotten this bad). Also I called to make this repair appointment and to get a rental care... when I showed up they said that they gave all the rental cars away and wanted me to come back a different day (it takes me over an hour to get to a carmax). They eventually figured it out but I had to advocate for myself and it took 1 and half hours to drop off a vehicle (which is ridiculous). At the time I dropped my car off for this repair I mentioned something seemed weird with the brakes and he said he couldnt look at the break without taking a lot of things apart (never heard this from any other mechanic). during an oil change 6 weeks later I told my regular mechanic who said right away I need new brakes and then told my the rear calibers are really bad (keep in mind this isnt even that old of a car and doesnt have that many miles on it). If you buy a car from her I would not trust them to fix it if something goes wrong. Its been a non stop headache. I am extremely disappointed. read more

We just needed an appraisal on a car and one had to wait in a line then two we were told it would take 40 minutes for the appraisal. After walking the entire lot and sitting in 20 cars we still were not called! They have 57 offices and we were told oh a lot of employees are on vacation. We only have 17 people working!! On a Saturday? Most of the employees were working with 2 people at a time. That cannot be very good customer service! Then after waiting all this time we were told We could do it online!! Really?!! Carmax finance is a complete scam. They suck you in with a claim of pre approval but you are not at all approved for finance. You're only approved for a test drive! I bought my 2008 Mercedes R350 on Valentines Day 2012 and I enjoyed the experience. I worked for a small used car dealership when I was young and I know the games they play. It was awesome to not have to negotiate pricing, have a huge selection and be in and out within 2 hours. I found a truck I liked on the web site and after much hesitation I paid $300 or so to ship it from Kansas. (They will ship many local cars for no cost at all.) I went to the dealership after running all of my information online. I brought my documents came in, test drove the truck and they even helped me save $500 on the deposit. I was extremely pleased and bought my 1st Mercedes! ****HELPFUL TIP**** If you are buying a BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Hummer, Audi then purchase the Carmax warranty. It only added like $6 per month to my payments and has been EXTREMELY helpful. Carmax will fix your issues with $0 deductible but I go to Mercedes and only pay a $50 deductible and I get free Mercedes Loaners. Awesome and sooooooo worth it. Take my advice, do it. read more

After two car purchases, Carmax Auto Financing, and a remote starter installation, I'm ready to say that I'm a fan of this Carmax! The space is clean, spacious, and uncluttered. I can shop online from home and pick up my purchases at the store. The sales people aren't pushy or garishly flirtatious. Lastly, my favorite part is not haggling. I've heard that some people really enjoy haggling. They enjoy the feeling of working hard for their steal and making the poor sales associate sweat and gnash their teeth in misery. Nah. That's not my style. I'd rather buy my car in the same way that I'd buy a new dress: pick it out and pay the price on the tag. If it turns out it's on sale, that's great. If not, that's fine too. Some minor complaints (and the reason why this isn't a beautiful 5 star review): - The sales associate erroneously told me that my first car purchase had a CD player. - The waiting area for car maintenance is super chilly. - I've had to come back for multiple appointments because the remote starter technician wasn't there. Granted, the first and last of those points were years ago (but the remote starter people are a pain in the butt and I will probably write a separate review about that company). The second point is still true. I was just there yesterday and did not unzip my winter coat or remove my hat the entire time because it was so cold. read more

Wow - what a rude surprise. We left our car here at the Hillside location over the weekend to have some work done, and to then sell it to Carmax. They let the Hillside police come INSIDE the lot and TICKET cars with outdated plates!!! We were not going to update the plates on our car ( garaged for two years) since we were selling it. This car was not parked outside of Carmax. It was parked and ticketed INSIDE their private lot. I will never give them any business again. read more

I simply do not like Carmax anymore. I was a big fan at one point, however after what happened here they can forget I existed. I took my Hyundai Elantra to this location in an attempt to sell it, as I no longer need this vehicle in the household. From the moment I started the selling process this location has given me issue after issue after issue. First, there was an issue with the title; my former leinholder sent a copy of the title as opposed to the real one and I didn't know until I sign all the paperwork, wait in their "signing room" and then get visited by two HILLSIDE POLICE OFFICERS who told me that this location accused me of...FRAUD. After the police officers verified that I was the owner of the car, they apologized...but the staff at this location did not, and ushered me out of a side door (as opposed to the front door). So I decide I'm not working with this location anymore. Turns out that when I tried selling the vehicle to another Carmax location (after getting a fresh copy of the title and verifying it with the Secretary of State), the Hillside location contacts their "Loss Prevention" department and...gets this...PUTS A HOLD ON THE CAR DEAL. All of this after I contacted their corporate offices and filed a complaint against this location. Seeing as I needed the money for my mortgage, I've decided to try and sell my other vehicle instead, since they won't even touch the Hyundai right now. But as far as Hillside is concerned...RUN. Heartily do I recommend Gabriel. He drove to Humboldt Park and picked us up at 5pm on a Friday. By 9 pm, he had us a loan and a 2005 Pontiac Vibe with less than 3K miles, every feature I felt necessary, and a minimum of stress, paperwork, and effort on my part. He was also extremely patient and fun to work with. The lot had a full, varied inventory, the facilities were clean and well maintained. The only complaint was that the child play area was kept locked and when it was opened, there was no one there to supervise the children. read more

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much from Carmax, as I've always heard bad things (overpriced, their cars are lemons, etc.) however, after being dicked around by two new car dealerships, I decided to give it a shot. I had initially called with a short finance question and spoke with Barb Walsh. Not only did she answer my question, but she took the time to start searching through the site to see if they had any cars I might be interested in. She took her time and went through the inventory with me for about 20 minutes - despite the fact that I had called near closing time. When I went into the dealership for my appointment, the entire experience was like night and day compared to what I dealt with at the other two dealerships I visited (and at the dealership I worked at for four years). Everything was very low pressure and Barb was absolutely awesome to work with. When it came to do my finance paperwork, I wasn't sent off to a finance manager - instead, Barb handled my paperwork, and everything was done with the computer screen facing me, so I could see the entire process and know exactly what I was paying for and how everything was being calculated (if you've ever worked with a traditional auto finance manager, you know it's usually the complete opposite!) In short, I had a great experience, and Barb was absolutely awesome to work with. I'm EXTREMELY happy with the car I purchased (and even happier about the six year warranty that I was able to buy!) and I would definitely purchase from Carmax - and Barb - again. read more

I utilized the "instant offer" that I'd seen advertised and was amazed that I was being offered more for my car than I owed on it! I had a new vehicle in mind and they had it shipped from another location. After test driving it, I knew it wasn't the car for me. Giuseppe and Samantha were helpful and patient as I scrolled through the website to find a better fit. They sent me home in a beautiful vehicle that feels perfect for me! Lamont, Robin, Veronica, & David were all extremely friendly and I felt so much less pressure than anticipated while buying a new car, because the atmosphere of this store was so great! Sadly, the wait went into a couple of hours, however our salesman, plus the manager made our wait comfortable. They were professional and pleasant under the circumstances.
