I bought a car for my wife here about a month ago and had a great experience. I went in the test drive a few days ago and had a bad experience. I informed them I had a bad experience and the General Manager himself called to follow up and to make it right. I don't want to make the point of this review around the incident because my point is that it was an anomaly and they more fixed the issue I experienced. Absolutely terrible experience. Purchased my trade-in with no issues, but that was about it. TDLR: Customer service was terrible until a manager got involved, salespersons don't care about you after you give them your money. CarMax will work to max out your warranty. Sale (2 out of 5 stars): Benson (Salesperson) was quick to sell the car and get financing which was great, however stated I would be paying $408/month for my purchase-- calls the next day (when I go to pickup the car) and states it's $458 a month! ..WHAT!? "Oh that;s with the gap insurance and the Maxcare extended warranty (which I stated I did not want)... So I stated I did not want it, and instead of okay it was "Oh WOW... May I ask why you don't want it?" ... I just don't! Then he goes on to say how many people use it for major repairs (which brings into question -- are you stating Carmax sells POS cars that need to be replaced anyway?) ... So then he says, well then gap insurance... Don't want it... so now its down to $388 a month. So I go and sign the paperwork to pickup the car. That part is done. Customer Service (1 out of 5 stars): I notice when I pull off the lot, my USB hub under the A/C controls don't work. I call the service department and am unable to get thru due to an AI answering service. I call my sales person and he (Benson) tells me "Sorry, I cannot help get you connected to service, once the customer buys the car, we have nothing to do with them" ...WHAT?! So much for customer service. You got your money from me, why else would you show an interest in how you earn a living?? ... I had the call on speaker and even my coworker was like WTF? Terrible customer service. Maintenance (1 out of 5): I bring the car in on Saturday AM, service for cars is only Monday to Friday. So I end up calling, earliest appointment was 4 days later 8:30am. So I take off work to get the car to Carmax. (Thursday 8:30am)... I call Friday after lunch time, they still HAVE NOT touched the car to see what the issue(s) are with it. I call at 6pm right as they close and they stated the car is in their "off lot" to go to the dealer Monday AM. I assumed the car was at the dealer. I call the following Thursday afternoon (7 days later), Carmax service supervisor (Fradonna) stated the car is at the dealer with no update. So I called the dealer and THEY DID NOT GET THE CAR. I called another close dealer and they did not have the car. I take the next (Friday) morning off work and drive to carmax. MY CAR WAS SITTING IN THEIR LOT FOR 8 DAYS!!!! ... They told me it was at the dealer, and I parked right next to it. I go to the Ford dealer with MY car so I know it's actually at a dealer, and Ford stated that Carmax is not very good with claiming items in their warranty and payment would be an issue. So I went back to Carmax so they can bring it to the dealer (hopefully) and I can still get a loaner vehicle. I go back and speak with the manager (Wesley) who stated he would ensure the car is bright the same day to the dealership. I got the call later that day that it was at the dealer and I called the dealer to confirm, which it was there. The following week, I called Ford for an update (which WHY AM I, THE CUSTOMER DOING THE JOB OF A SERVICE TECH/MANAGER ON A CAR CARMAX IS RESPONSIBLE FOR????).... And they needed a part for the car where total would be $1400 or so. I called the manager and it was only when I told him that I would be out of town, did they put pep in their step because they didn't want the loaner vehicle to be at their airport for 2 weeks (not mentioning the fact my car is still at the dealer...) ... so that got approved and I finally got the car back with no issues. I had the car for 4 days, and it was in the parking lot at Carmax for 8 days (only on Day 8 did it go to the dealer because I drove there and raised the issue).... Absolutely ridiculous service. I would NEVER do business with Carmax again, nor will I recommend them. Scammers who want to max out your warranty and screw you over as a customer. I've had a very suspicious interaction with CarMax. I recently attempted to purchase a vehicle. Despite having pre-approved financing in-place, the dealership staff ("Zak" and "Abdul") still required income verification via Bank Statements as well as my SSN. I provided them, redacted. The next day, I was informed that I could not purchase the vehicle at the location, and shipment to a location near me would be required, a service that incurred additional cost ($1,200). I eventually completed the pre-purchase items via CarMax corporate, and arranged for the car to be shipped to a nearby location. Not more than 5-minutes after completion, dealership staff "Zak" called and read me a pre-prepared statement that they have cancelled the sale and transfer, despite the order already being processed. Further, staff at that location have determined that the CarMax-Garland location as well as all CarMax locations will not do business with me in the future, this decision is final and they (CarMax) are not required to give a reason. I honestly don't know how to respond, other than to be suspicious of this and perhaps other location, especially in regard to data and private information. read more

My wife & I was Prequalified for a vehicle at our local CarMax of Plano everyone was excellent on point and polite @ CarMax Of Plano, The car that we wanted was at CarMax of Garland.... When we left CarMax of Plano the paperwork for car we wanted at CarMax of Garland was complete .... all we needed was to sign a few signatures and read over some documents...... When we arrived at CarMax of Garland , we were directed to business office immediately and was received by a nice young lady by the name of Melissa Huerta. Let me preference this by also saying that me and wife were dressed for the weather , it was cold out so we had on sweats. Mrs Huerta helped my wife get ready for the test drive , we test drove the car everything was amazing !!!! Upon arriving back to the Dealership after the test drive, myself and my wife were approached by Christian Gantes (Sales Associate) which introduced himself and Hawar Gerki (Sr Sales Consultant) Who said absolutely nothing to us about who was period. Then Christian stated that some information didn't come from the CarMax Of Plano, and we need to finish up some paperwork. Mind you , I said before arriving to CarMax Of Garland all the paperwork was complete, all we needed to do was sign for the car and read over everything. Hawar Gerki took my wife to has desk and basically interrogated her asking how she made some much money and literally reran all of her info...including ... job verification (again). At point I get pissed because clearly he is racial profiling us with a smile on his face. Mind you he hasn't stated the reason behind doing this or stated who he is to my wife. 45 minutes goes by he comes back to my wife saying it was a mix up and he is sorry..... all this after the paperwork with the car was complete on our end. Clear cut case of racial profiling. Bright note out this was Mrs.Huerta she was very professionally and needs to be promoted , she went above and beyond even offering to pay for dinner. Now , Hawar Gerki needs to be fired for work place profiling and harassment... completely unprofessional as customer I would never purachase a car from this location because he works there. I bought my car with them in March 2025, and purchased the extended warranty, MaxCare. I now need service, and accessing that service has been HORRIBLE! First, when I call you, you get stuck in AI-misery with the "assistant", who's sole purpose is to keep you from talking to a human. When you finally get to the Service Department, you only get a voicemail. I've left 3 messages for the Garland service department, and no call back after 6 days. So, I tried to use the external repair shop CarMax sent me to. The website does not explain well how this works, and I was very confused whether the external repair shop would be covered by the MaxCare contract. I scheduled an "early-bird" appointment through the CarMax website. The place was closed and I had to wait for them to open, which left me late for work. Once I finally got into the place, they took my information and said they'd call me back. The MaxCare contract is through Assurant. They have been even worse to work with. The repair shop called me almost immediately and said it was the compressor, but that Assurant wouldn't approve the repair request until they had sent their own inspector, which could take UP TO 72 HOURS!!! However, even though I'm stuck without a car, when I called Assurant and waded through THEIR horrible AI "assistant" to finally talk to a real person, they told me that rental coverage wouldn't be available to me until AFTER the inspection and approval, leaving me without a car for 6 DAYS! CarMax sold me this extended warranty with the expectation that I would have the benefits of repairs when they were needed and a rental care while my car was in the shop. Here I am 6 days later, no car, approval pending. I should have gone to a dealership and just bought through them! This is the worst experience I've ever had with a car company regarding repairs. Their website is designed only to sell cars, not to help those who have already bought them from you. I'm a repeat customer at CarMax, because the buying experience was less stressful, but they've just destroyed any desire I have to go back when I buy my kid a car (my next expected car purchase). read more

Everything with the vehicle has been mostly okay. Might have overpaid a bit. However, DO NOT finance your car loan here. They use a "pay ahead" system that doesn't allow you to pay down your principal, and then try to scam you with "accrued finance charges" if you try to put that pay ahead amount down on your principal. I've never had such a bad time with a credit loan in my life. The customer service reps are also rude and generally incapable of explaining what's even going on with your loan. You have to ask for a manager to even get understanding. read more

I had my new-to-me 2018 Kia Sorento shipped to the Garland, TX Carmax from California by way of Waco, TX. In 2020 I purchased a 2016 Kia Sorento from a location in Austin, TX (that one was shipped from Tyler). That experience was wonderful and I went straight back to CarMax when I needed to replace it. This experience has also been overall positive. Largely due to the above and beyond assistance I received from Hallier in the Garland service department. I was, and still am, a little perturbed at the all the many many little things that were wrong. Bad headlight, bad key fobs, bad blinkers, lane departure system didn't work, bad sway bar mounts, dirty air filters. And MORE, someone in either CA or Waco did not perform the extensive checks that CarMax is famous for. Hallier got everything fixed, even some things I might not have noticed until they went wrong. He was communicative and gracious throughout. I can't say enough good things. read more

They sold my son a car that barely ran for 24 hours. The day after he bought the car he started the drive from Dallas to CA. Outside Albuquerque, at 10pm, the dashboard stopped working. No speedometer, etc. He was stranded on the side of the highway until a tow truck could get there over an hour later. We had it towed to the Carmax in Albuquerque which cost over $300, then had to get him a hotel. It's too early to know if this situation can be resolved quickly, or at all. A++ unbelievable service!! We had a technicality with our financing that required us to change the owner 50 days after purchase. CarMax, under no obligation whatsoever to help us, stepped in and allowed us to return the car (even though the return window had passed) and rebuy it in the right owner. They did all the paperwork while we relaxed, and even took the car for a wash, clean, and full tank of gas! Just absolutely remarkable customer service. After 2 hard credit inquiries, they wanted to run a THIRD and I had questions about why we were having to go the extent of running it yet again, and why I wasn't made aware of all these documents, adjustments, and rules regarding my residency and that your lease doesn't count as proof. I purchased my 2017 Explorer Sport in 11/22 from Carmax. My sales person, Rogers was outstanding and very transparent on the entire process. I was in and out of the dealership in less then 90 minutes. I did have my own financing arranged ahead of time to expedite the process. I called Carmax in 12/22 to report my airbag light was on and the windshield made a whistling noise. They said to bring it in and they would have a loaner waiting. The Service person I worked with was Neil S., and let me tell you, this guy went out of his way to accommodate me and insure me that they would address the issues. Within a week, they resolve the airbag issue and would have safe light come out to my house to replace the windshield. Now that is service! CarMax screwed me! I paid $41,000 for a nearly new Ford F150 with 13k miles. A few months later I noticed the paint looked like it was somewhat defective so I figured I'd have it looked at under warranty soon but a few months later I ended up finding out it had been hit and damaged all over 70% of the side of it. I took it back to CarMax and I just wanted them to make it right; they sold me a truck at full value and it was worth $$ thousands less due to collision damage all over it. CarMax told me they would NOT DO ANYTHING. I thought CarMax was awesome but turns out they will screw you over like any other car dealer. I purchased my Nissan Quest on 02/26/20 and the back up camera did not work . I was told to take the van to service and everything would be fixed . The next day 02/27/20 I was able to bring my can to service and gave me my first loaner car. After having the loner for almost a week I found out the car horn did not work . Which was only apparent because I couldn't honk my horn when trying to avoid a car accident . Thankfully the other car noticed he was about to hit me and slammed on the brakes before he hit me . I called him and left a message on 03/03 stating I needed another car and why. Now , I understand that the service department was closed when I initially called however , I left 4 voicemails the next day and multiple calls before I got him to answer the phone to switch out the car. He did have a van waiting for me when I got there that night 03/04 but it was a hassle to drive form South Dallas almost Duncanville to Garland. On 03/05 the service advisor stated the car was ready for pick up and he would leave the keys with the business office .However when I went to pick up the van you could visibly see that the vendor the damaged the head liner ( hanging and stained ) , punctures in the right rear door , broken rear wiper that was glued back together ,scratches in the interior of the rear hatch ( where the back up camera panel is ), and there is a hole in the floor board. Friday night I drove down to the service department to exchange my loaner for a more gas efficient car and the van had not moved since Thursday night. I was able to confirm that my advisor advisor Carlos did in fact come to work that day but didn't call me back . I left the car there that night due to the damages and poor workmanship and since then I have wrote 3 emails that included pictures , and left multiple messages regarding the damages and my service advisor has not called me back . My Van is still currently still at the dealership and as of 03/09 after 12:30 pm I have not had any communication since Thursday night around 5pm . Please avoid purchasing a car from Carmax if there are any repairs needed. Apparently their " techs" are incapable of diagnosing a faulty audio unit and the vendors used are terrible. Greetings - I always like to leave a review whether the service was great or bad. In the case this was the worst car buying experience in my life! I applied, was approved was advised what I needed to bring in when I visited the delearship! When I got into the dealer the entire mentality changed. These people gave me the worst service and run around ever! They treated me like a poor black man couldn't come in there making over 450k and be legit! My supplemental income would have paid my car note. They asked me for check stubs , utility bill, insurance proof and bank statements! I provided the first page of the accounts because I own Ty a health care agency all my patient's information is present I advised that it's a confidential thing with my patients and the State! These people called me and advised they don't want to do business with me! All I was trying to do was buy a car to get to my doctor appointments and to church! The purchase was fairly easy and the sales person was good. Once I signed the paperwork though, everything went down hill. The car has an engine problem. I took it up there and waited for someone to contact me. After a few days I called to check on it. The service guy acted like he had no knowledge of it but finally found that since I hadn't "made an appointment" they scheduled it for later in the week. I hadn't expected that they would just do it when they got a moment. I just bought the car and I am heartbroken that they did not have show any urgency. Seems like if they sold the car broken, they should fix it immediately, not just when they have time. I am now driving a really poor quality loan car and every time I get in it, I get upset all over again, with no idea of how long I won't get to drive my new car. The manager who I spoke with briefly on the phone, actually hung up on me (no I was not yelling, screaming or cussing at him). I was so mad in that moment that I drove all the way over there and chewed out an entirely different manager. I still may sell the car back to them!! I am so frustrated to have looked for this specific car for almost 2 years, finally found the one I wanted, paid lots to have it shipped in and then get treated like I am not worthy of any kind of quick action. In addition, the two times I have been there I have been treated with rudeness and a lack of respect by a specific woman in the business office. I'm glad I ignored the low star count, this place was a dream come true. Abdul was a pleasure to work with. I had been stressed about how to sell a vehicle I didn't need anymore, trying to list it online and use websites friends suggested. It was frustrating and I was ready to take a crappy offer for my truck. I made an appointment for an appraisal at this CarMax and it was quick and easy! The offer I got was above what I expected! Very close to the Kelly Blue Book value and far, far higher than anyone else had offered me. After they appraised it, I had 7 days to take the offer. I came back later that day. My vehicle had issues I was unaware of when I got my first oil change. When I spoke with Earl he got right on it and made it all possible to get me on the road again. This was my second vehicle I sold to CarMax and it went as smooth as the first time (e.g. I got the full amount of the original offer and it didn't take long). Charles (in the Business Office) was fantastic in explaining the whole process from A-Z and keeping me updated. If he isn't the Office Manager, he should be based on his professionalism. Additionally, there were people around me that didn't get the full amount for their cars and were complaining--the same ones that probably gave 2-star ratings. I viewed their vehicles and all were dirty and one had a hub cap missing and CarMax probably found out some other not so favorable issues--so no mystery to me. Bottom line: trade-in/sell your vehicle to them in the condition you would want to buy it; be up to date on payments and have all necessary documents with you and all should go well. read more

Horrible service. I got my trade appraisal looked in their lot to find a car I could do a trade around the price range and found one that was going to get transferred from Houston. I was told it was going to be here in a couple of days only to get the run around of the delivery. I went up there 3 times in search of getting info about the car I was told it was damaged and getting repaired and that was a lie now the car can't be found at all. look for another place that will not waste your time. read more

Great experience, I honestly can't believe they are rated so low. They offered a fair value on my trade-in, and there were no "slick" moves in the financial phase. I would recommend Andy Jacobs. He helped us with trade-in, but really came through with finding us a car at another location that fit what we needed, and getting it sent to Garland. I had a sour experience here that will prevent me from visiting this Carmax location in the future. Buying a car can be overwhelming, and having a car salesperson write you off makes it more frustrating. My budget is on the lower end of the spectrum. When I told the salesperson I wanted to take a look at a vehicle that was out of my range, they refused me and said I would be 'disappointed' if I looked at slightly more expensive car. What happened to the good ole days, when salesmen tried to swindle you out of as much money as possible? A Toyota with over 100,000 miles that's a few years old doesn't cost 18 grand everywhere you go. I went to Carmax with the knowledge that they had a spectacular refund policy. As someone who has a decent amount of money to put down on a car, I can absolutely say they lost a customer. I am looking to finance with a dealership is well, so it's their loss. I found a car online at the Garland location and immediately submitted a request to have it transferred to the CarMax near me. I received a text from Johnathon, following up on the transfer request. I texted him back three times and he didn't respond. I called the Garland location but reached a call center. She said the car had been sold. I asked how that happened since I'd submitted the request and she didn't know. She asked if I'd like a manager to call me and I said yes. That was on July 2nd and I never heard from anyone.
