#CARMAX bait and switch. Beware ! #KMX We decided to sell our company car since we hardly use it any longer. Had my operations manager get some quotes and decided to go local to the Carmax in Wayne. She conveyed all the information to them over the phone, including that the car was wrapped, and that it was a company vehicle. They Told her all the documents that we had to bring in which I did . Upon my arrival for my appointment I was surprised that they made me go to the bank and get a notarized letter that I was the owner of the company even though it was addressed in advance. Not a big deal I went and left the car there. At that point they had plugged everything into the computer, and I was told when I came back with the letter I would have to sign some forms and I would be out of there in 10 minutes. To my surprise the person helping me came back to the desk and I saw the quote was $8000 when I was quoted $12,400. Well, you can imagine my surprise. When I called to confirm the appointment the day before, Jacob from sales was super-professional to the point where - at first - I wasn't sure if I was talking to an automated message or an actual person lol. He was able to help me move my appointment up to 11am (earliest available online was 12pm). Day of appointment I was helped by Deborah N, who was very pleasant to work with. BEST EXPERIENCE! Prior to my appointment I was a little bit nervous as I have never sold a vehicle before. I also had to change my date and time 3x prior as my my work schedule is crazy- they were so helpful and able to accommodate me. I was impressed from the moment I walked into CarMax right when they opened at 11am. The staff greeted the customers immediately and took each one of us instantly. I bought a BMW X3 from CarMax. It's a great car and was very competitively priced. Silkia Morales was the associate who took helped me with the purchase and was a pleasure to work with. She was very friendly and helpful and made the process seamless. I would highly recommend working with her! The only issue I had with Carmax (which is why I've docked a star) is that it was hard to get information about the car. It took almost 2 weeks before it was ready for me. It's not the fact that I had to wait but the process seemed very disorganized. It was hard to get in touch with the relevant parties via the app or the phone number. In addition I was promised several updates, which I never got. I had to keep taking the initiative to call and get meaningful information from the agent. Also, there was also no record of my previous interactions so I had to keep starting at square one. In terms of the transparent pricing and the simplicity of the actual sale -- I was very impressed. It was refreshing change from the nightmarish experiences at typical dealerships. With the caveat above, I would recommend CarMax for quality vehicles at good prices. read more

Okay the only reason I'm giving three stars is because of Jann and Lusette (sp?) who I give 5 stars. Carmax as a company, you absolutely must work on communication. I ordered my car which was in MD, it needed to be shipped to NJ - okay no problem, this was all done. However it is when the vehicle got to NJ is when my experience became hellish. I would call daily to get status of the car and kept being told it was going through an additional quality check. This was several days after I was told I would receive my car. Okay, so now I call and they tell me the same thing, finally I get someone on the phone who digs deep and discovers that the MD location never sent the title. I had to call the MD store myself, track someone down, and thankfully was connected to Lusette (who I think is in NJ) who didn't only locate the whereabouts of the title, but also provided me with a FedEx tracking number. So the FedEx gets sent to NJ... now I can see that it's at the NJ location, so I call to make an appointment and their next appointment was nearly three weeks out, and now I'm already two weeks past the time I was told I would have the car. Well I took the chance of traveling from Manhattan to Edison which was quite the journey. I was greeted and briefly told my situation. I was told they cannot help me without an appointment. Finally, Jann the manager approaches me. Jann is the man! He was so helpful and understanding and got everything done. My three stars is really for Carmax itself not really for this particular location. I think there needs to be a revamp of their phone systems, and their transferring systems - and they should have a dedicated team to contacting customers back. It's very frustrating to be told someone will call you back after you've told your whole story only for no one to call you back, and then you have to call again and then retell the whole story and the cycle continues [pulling hair out]. Needless to say, I got the car, Jann saved the day, and Lusette promptly sent me the paperwork to register with the NY DMV. I recommend Edison NJ folks, but Carmax as a company needs some operational changes. read more

After getting low ball offers from local dealers despite their online offers, I was a little reluctant to travel to Edison because I expected the same. I answered the questions online and received a very good quote. I couldn't schedule an appointment online, but when I called, they said to just walk in. I went on the last day the offer was valid for and after a bit of a wait (they had nationwide systems problems), I didn't want to wait any longer and scheduled an appointment for a couple of days later. Rosa was so nice and the manager, Hussain, offered to reimburse me for dinner for my family due to the inconvenience. When I went the second time, again Rosa and Hussain were so helpful. Rosa had to leave in the middle of the transaction but Silkia completed it and was also amazing. The offer was a bit lower than the online offer, but they spoke with the appraiser and the offer was soon changed to the offer I received online. The transaction went very well and I couldn't be more pleased. Please don't hesitate to consider Carmax when selling or buying a used car. They certainly are NOT the stereotypical used car sales people. read more

Wow. First impressions say a lot don't they? My daughter and I walked into Carmax for our appt. The nasty women at the front desk didn't see my appt for today and was rude and told me to come back another day that it was too busy today anyway. I walked out and then remembered I had an email confirmation. I came back in to show my appt confirmation to her and she said well I can't check you in anyway you don't have an active appt so I can't help you. The manger finally told her to check us in and she said to me it's a 3 hour wait. Yeah no thanks. There are too many other companies to buy from. read more

I bought a 2017 Kia Niro from this dealership in March of this year. Despite having to wait for a week for the vehicle to be inspected, transported, and inspected again, I was surprised to find that this car that I bought for my 19 year old had no spare tire and no tools to change a tire. We were NOT alerted to this huge oversight. In the wheel well - where a spare tire and tools clearly once lived - was a can of fix-a-flat. Which is fine if you have a tiny puncture but useless for anything more. This is highly dangerous and we should have been told. I have now purchased a spare tire, a jack, and a tire iron (another $400). Thank goodness I discovered this at home and my kid who is 200 mi away at school wasn't standing on the NJ turnpike. This, along with some major paperwork SNAFUs means I would advise taking your business elsewhere. read more

Received several emails and text offers to sell my later model, low milage SUV from CarMax of Edison. Spoke to cust rep "Heather", told to drive right down. Drove 35 minutes to Edison, told I did not have an appointment, and I would have to make one in the future. Explained I was invited / instructed to come right over and an offer of $25,400 was sent to me via email. Sorry, no dice, those are just "enticements" as I was informed. Total waste of time. There must have been at least 40 employees working, they schedule you, work out the cheapest price, take you car in the back, detail it and throw it in the lot after markup. It's a used car factory, and the worst business practices and customer service I have ever seen. AVOID ! read more

My partner and I work Monday through Friday in New York City which leaves only the weekends to get things done today we walked into Carmax with our appointment, our payoff letters for our current cars which by the way are still brand new cars ready to pay the difference get a deal done today. They're losers Staff wanted to waste our time because they couldn't go based off the dealer payoff letters which I made sure was done and completed good through April 21, 2023, which is next week they wanted to waste our time and make us come during the week when they can get a hold of the bank that is not our problem not our issue we are not going to take time off of work when we did our homework to get everything done there lose your manager and loser Staff could not handle a simple transaction seeing how all the work was already done for them. Zero stars for wasting our time. I can't wait to see all of these idiots lose their job they deserve to be on welfare and on the unemployment line for being so stupid. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!! I will never shop at this CarMax again. Starting in mid June. I placed a reservation for a car, spoke to a rep who helped facilitate the reservation and set up the appointment for me. This was Saturday June 24, 2022 at 11:00. I arrived at CarMax Edison prior to open. I sat down with the sales rep who went through all the paperwork, appraisal, etc. We went out to the lot to look for the car. Turns out it was shipped out the same morning to Maple Shade, NJ. I chalked it up to a miscommunication. Oh well!!! I will try again. A few days later I found the same car newer with less miles but this time it was located in Delaware. The shipping was free so I took a shot to see if I could have the car shipped to Edison, they were so nice and apologetic based on the last visit. This was July 1, 2022 when I placed the second reservation. I knew it was a holiday weekend so the car would not be shipped until July 5th. Sure enough it was sent on July 5th and it arrived in Edison on July 6th. I reached out to see if I could test drive the car. Turns out it was still being inspected. I found out on July 7th it was being held up because it needed a front license plate bracket. I actually had a manufacturer's bracket for this make and model car a friend had given me. I asked if I could drop it off to be installed and was told if there is an open work order it needs to be closed in order to move it to the next step but he did say I could try taking a ride to Edison and see if the sales manager will accommodate it. The dealership is only 15 minutes away. When I arrived at CarMax in Edison on July 8th, I saw a similar car sitting in the lot. When I walked in all the reps were very nice and accommodating. Jason who assisted me told me the car i reserved was in the back lot and secured. He did say the technicians were off for the weekend, but I saw cars being pulled into the service area as I was talking to him (#1). He also said if the car is reserved for you, it is yours and I would hear from CarMax when it is ready (#2). I asked how much the car in the lot was and he gave me the miles and price (#3). Figured I would take a look. Turns out the car I saw in the lot, which was supposedly locked up and secured for me, was the car I reserved (VIN number matched). Jason gave me the information on a car listed at a different CarMax in NJ. I went back in and mentioned the car was on the lot and spoke to a different rep this time. He also assured me this was my car and once the license plate bracket was in I would get a call (#4). Today is Tuesday July 13th. I never received a call or email. The reservation appears to have been cancelled and the car is listed for sale. I will never use this dealership again and I guess it is true what you hear about used car dealers also carries weight with nation dealers as well. I know this is a long review but please heed my word and AVOID this dealership at all costs. Horrible business practices and individuals who do not live up to their end of the deal. Terrible experience, would love to give a 0 star rating. Numbers 1-4 indicate the number of times I was lied to. read more

I was NOT AT ALL satisfied with my experience dealing with CarMax. I found a vehicle online in Las Vegas, NV & had it transfered to Amherst, NY store that I was told was the closet to me [400 miles away] due to the closing of nearest store in LI, NY. Apon my own research, while looking for tickets to go get the vehicle... I found out that a store 28 miles from my house in NJ was in fact open. The Edison, NJ store. I was told by the Amherst, NY store I had to call that NJ store to request a transfer. Completely unprofessional that a customer must call to request the right transfer to the closet store after being told that store did not exist. So, I requested a transfer. I was told ok & the transfer fee would be waived. All I had to do was wait to be called. I waited the week & no call. I then call the following Monday to find out the vehicle was being transfered somewhere else [St. Louis]... to another customer. No notice. I insured this vehicle as soon as I paid the transfer fee of $1,049 to have it shipped to NY. When I spoke to corporate I was told nothing could be done, as each store is independent but falls under the corporate umbrella of CarMax. Nonsense!! If that is how CarMax operates at the corporate level, then maybe a restructuring needs to be made. I was however refunded my transfer fee. And after numerous calls lodging my dismay, being told I would recieve a call back from a manager... that never happened. I only spoke with numerous customer service reps, nothing happened. This experience was over the course of the month of May into June. Complete waste of my time. read more
