What we like about Carmax is the fact we can walk on their lot and not be bombarded by a salesman. We can walk around the lot on my own terms, take our time and look around in peace. After finding the car we were interested in we went and found the sales lady who initially introduced herself to us and completed the deal. No pressure, no sleeze salesman, no one shadowing us on the lot and very competitive no-haggle pricing. The no-haggle price was solid, over $3000 below KBB. We have been really happy with CarMax. We purchased our 2013 Nissan there 2 years ago and and my husband uses it for work, driving it constantly. The transmission went out on it (our mechanic said from now on not to buy any cars that are CVT- the transmissions cannot be opened to be repaired. They can only be replaced). Because we couldn't get a timely appt at CarMax they gave us permission to see an outside mechanic (wonderful and I highly recommend McWilliams and Walden on Brundage Lane). Williams and Walden replaced the transmission with a brand new one. Because we purchased the extended warranty, we were out the door with only a $50 deductible! We had bad credit when we went to buy our car, we were able to get 7% financing, no haggling, great customer service and have been really happy with them and our car. We will buy our cars at CarMax from now on. read more

I purchased a BMW from CarMax in Bakersfield in March and I only had it for a week and a half before it had to go to their service department for a system malfunction. The car has remained there since then. It has been horrible trying to communicate with their service department. On top of this, they have to schedule appointments with the BMW dealership. I feel as though the BMW dealership puts CarMax vehicles on the back burner and this adds to the time that your vehicle stays in the shop. I tried to return the vehicle and they wouldn't do it because it was a couple days past the 30 day mark (even though they have had the car in their possession for the entire time). I also called their customer relations department and they were no help. This has seriously been the worst car buying experience I have ever had. I do not recommend buying a car through CarMax and have made sure to let all of my friends and family know this. I am so disappointed because we fell in love with the car that we bought. Do not buy a car from CarMax!!!!! You will surely get a lemon. I was warned myself by many people, yet I still bought my Dodge Journey from CarMax. Guest what?? I got a lemon. Ugh. Bought my car at the end of 2018, about 6 months later, entire coolant spilled on the Olive Garden parking lot. Took car into CarMax and they said they repaired the coolant gasket. A couple months later, out of no where, same problem, coolant completely spilled. Took car back to CarMax and apparently they replaced the gasket cap. A couple months later (during hot summer months) it happened again. So frustrating problem was never fixed in the first place. It's now 2021, and like clock work, car coolant spills on hot weather months. Same issues, I've had all these years. I do not want to take it back to CarMax, as it's obvious to me they do not know how to repair the problem. I literally carry gallons of coolant in my car just in case. I'm moving out of town next week and I'm upset because I don't think my car will make the 3 hour drive in this hot weather. So just beware, do not buy from CarMax!!!! read more

Me and my mother went there almost a year ago and we were there for almost the whole day because they made a mistake on the paperwork and had to start over. Couple of months later the car broke down and my mom got a new one, this time we were there from 11 AM to almost 8 PM. I was outside with the dog and we run out of water, it was almost 100 degrees, my mom left me and the dog at the hotel because it was getting really hot that day, the staff only came to check on people outside only one time. Not too thrilled... My car was rear-ended a couple months ago. After all of the repairs were done, I took it in to CarMax to get it appraised to see how much it was worth after the accident. My friend just got his car appraised there and was happy with their service, so I figured I'd give it a try. I disclosed that it was, in fact, in an accident but there was no frame damage. The inspector looked for a few minutes and then told me there was frame damage on my car. I was shocked... I thought the body shop duped me and CarMax was exposing more damage than was originally disclosed. The following Tuesday, I brought my car into another third-party body shop and they looked at me like I was crazy. They said my car had absolutely no frame damage. They even lifted it to look underneath. So after 2 insurance adjusters, my repairing body shop, and a third-party/non-affiliated body shop review, my car was deemed to have no frame damage. Back to CarMax I went. The person who appraised my car the first time happened to be there again. When I showed him my repair documents and told him that the fourth person who inspected my car said there was no frame damage, he rebutted by saying "It's not necessarily frame damage by definition. However, we can't sell this car on our lot because we won't certify it." He told me they could sell the car at auction and showed me the price they would pay me. Needless to say, it was well below a fair amount. Sounds to me like this is a ploy to scare the customer into accepting less money for a car that has no damages. I always heard good things about CarMax, but the more I researched online, the more I found stories like mine. read more

I purchased a 2011 Kia Sorento from CarMax in October 2013. By January 27th 2014, the vehicle had already broken down. I suspect it will need at the very least some transmission work. I called CarMax and there was nothing they could do since I hadn't purchased an extended warranty. Since the vehicle was used, the manufacturer's warranty expired at 60k miles. The car has 62k miles. Funny thing is that I bought the car when it had 59k miles. That's right: I drove the car for 90 days and less than 3k miles and it is parked outside of my home like a paper weight. I strongly caution against purchasing a vehicle from Car Max at this point. There is no reason a vehicle should break down less than 90 days from purchase, especially given the "inspections" they advertise they put their vehicles through. I've purchased 2 vehicles through CarMax and this will be my last. Update (3/31/14): Got the Kia inspected today by a mechanic. It needs a whole new transmission. That's right: Bought the vehicle from Car Max in October 2013 and before January was done, it needs a whole new transmission. Estimated cost: $2000. I will never again buy a vehicle from Car Max and will never recommend them to anybody I'm associated with. Update (September 2014): Actual repair cost for the new transmission was $3500. Not even an apology from Carmax for selling an inferior product. Always question their "inspections" and have the vehicle checked independently before purchase. read more

My wife and I needed a new car since the baby arrived. We were planning on just trading in her paid off vehicle at the dealership we were buying from but I figured I'd see what Carmax could offer first. I'll admit I always had negative impression of Carmax. It's basically just a used car lot after all. However I found the customer service to be outstanding although the facilities has a little "second-handy" feel to it. I guess you could say this it the Goodwill of car dealers. My wife's 2008 Honda Element was in almost new condition. It only had 26K on the odometer and was very clean inside and out. The lady helping us said most cars they buy go straight to auction because they are in bad condition. Her car, on the other hand, would be put in their sales lot and they paid more for those cars. After they did a 30 minute inspection, which includes a short test drive, they gave me a non-negotiable offer of 14K. I was shocked. I thought maybe we would get around 10.5K for it. They gave us 7 days to consider the offer and promised they would guarantee it. I brought this offer to the Toyota dealership where we bought a new car and they couldn't match it. I expected this. The Carmax offer was 2K over what Toyota could pay. That being said I drove back to Carmax, picked up their cashiers check for 14K, and signed it over to Toyota. Easy peasy. If you plan on selling or trading in your car take an hour and go to Carmax and see what they will offer you. We were very happy with their offer and customer service. No fifth star because the cars on their lot are a little beat up. They don't take the time or money to repair scratches/dings. I guess you get a better price this way but who wants to buy a car that's already beat up? read more

Let me start out by saying that everyone I dealt with at CarMax was incredibly nice. If it wasn't for the polite salespeople, I would have given CarMax a one star rating. Now on to the bad part... My husband and I came here looking for a new car for me. We found the perfect car and sat down to run numbers. My husband has great credit and was offered a HORRIBLE interest rate...7.99%! I was immediately upset and the salesperson tried to calm me down. She really was so nice and patient, but no amount of pleasantries could makeup for the interest rate (which I knew she had no control over). We ended up leaving CarMax to get preapproved by our credit union, Kern Schools. They offered us a 3.5% interest rate for the car. Perfect! We were on our way back to CarMax with the pre-approval letter, but were told that a pre-approval letter was not sufficient. Perplexed by this, my husband asked what it was we had to do. We were told we had to purchase the car through CarMax and with the awful financing and then take the car with the Bill of Sale back to Kern Schools to see if they would refinance the car. We quickly realized this was not the right option for us. We decided to go to a dealership which would be happy with our pre-approval letter. Overall, this is only the place to come if you need a car and have terrible credit. I'm pretty sure they are the type that will approve anyone, but just be prepared for a high interest rate. Anyone with decent credit, I would say this is not the place for you. The cars they had did seem nice, the sales people are nice, but the financing is a deal breaker. read more

So, we recently were looking for a newer bigger car...I really was sold on the 30 days to love it or bring it back that CarMax offers...I had one car shipped here from out of town and it had obviously been cheaply fixed from being in a car accident...didn't get that one...so I had a different one shipped and when I went to go see it there had been some kind of miscommunication and they had reserved it for someone else after I had already reserved it...we figured let's just roll with it and let fate lead us to the right car...so, they graciously shipped a car here from out of town for free for messing up and we had it for just a couple days when I noticed a weird fluttering from the transmission, I took it back and it took them a week to fix it, they did provide me with a really nice rental, when I finally got the car back it still does the same thing at a different speed now...but I have the extended warranty so I'm just going to plan on taking it back sometime when they don't seem as busy...I love my new car and it's very clean and nice...my experience was definitely trying on my patience but I'm trying to just keep my peace. While they made it SUPER easy to turn your car in BEWARE of the service department. My car had a piece fly off the day AFTER I bought it. I took it in and they said that they were ordering the piece. I asked to be updated on the status as it was embarrassing to drive a "new" car with pieces missing! NOTHING. I called twice, on the second call the part magically came in the night before. Then I had to wait another 5 days to get in to have them fix it. They said it should be be about 20 minutes, and I asked why, then, they couldn't squeeze me in! They wouldn't budge. It's ridiculous that my new (to me) car looks like a hunk of junk and they have made NO effort to help me out! As I am typing this and after I threw a fit on the phone, they called back. I hate it when sales people are aggressive, pushy, and dishonest. That's why I have enjoyed my experiences with Carmax. I've purchased a vehicle from them and I've also sold a vehicle to them (on two separate occasions). Both times I dealt with people who were honest and easy to deal with. I was never pressured or misled. If you take a closer look at the negative reviews, you'll see people who are unreasonably unhappy (and no, I don't work there and have no stake in the company). One customer was unhappy because the car broke down 90 days after she purchased it. She neglected to have it inspected by her own mechanic during the buyback period (Carmax lets you out of the deal if you change your mind within a few days). The other guy was unhappy because he didn't get an offer he liked from Carmax when he wanted to sell his car to them. Try them out yourself before you pass judgment. read more

I went shopping today for cars. I didn't end up leaving with anything, but that has more to do with the fact that I'm not 100% sure I'm ready to buy. I had a really pleasant experience. I liked that nobody at Carmax treated me any different based on how I looked or acted or my age. Believe it or not, at 23 I work my butt off full time as a manager and can afford to buy a car! Crazy, right? That's why you shouldn't judge as a car salesman. At many other lots in town, I would not even get greeted or if I did, it would be 20-30 minutes after I arrived. The other lots I've been to didn't really listen to me about what features were my priorities, and we're all overly concerned about financing. Here it was more about finding cars that fit my needs and overall budget. They weren't overly pushy about using the carmax financing and were not weird about letting me test drive cars or letting me look at whatever interested me. I've had my car for a couple of months now and I've been nothing but happy with it, Mina was my sales guy and he was great!! My only complaint is the financing, thier APRs are crazy high, even with good credit I wasn't able to qualify for a good interest rate. Luckily Mina recommended us to his girl friend Christine who works at a bank here in town and she was able to get us a great interest rate! Mina and Christine made everything super easy, he gave us her number and we saw her same day to finalize everything, they make a great team. The administration office is disorganized, as they lost my paperwork that they needed to send to the DMV and I was even told I would have to bring my car in to get smogged before getting my plates despite the fact that I just purchased my car 2 months ago. Leigha the office manager was very helpful and knowledgeable, but everyone else in that office had to ask someone else for help and that person needed to ask someone else also. But I love my car and the purchasing process was fine, they just need to train their administrators better and need A LOT of organization. read more

My wife and i attempted to sell our 2016 honda fit to these clowns. We went in with a pre approved offer and they told us that they need to do a "inspection." Not a problem. I service my vehicle so i know how it runs and whats wrong with it. After inspections they low balled there offer because of mechanical issues. We went in with nothing wrong and left with check engine light and abs sensor lights... the whole dash was lit up for christmas. I took it home and ran my own diagnostics test on the vehicle and whoever "inspected" it installed diesel codes into my honda which triggered my "mechanical issues." I deleted the codes and drove test and re-tested computer. NO FAULTS! These guys are shady and i would not trust them to buy from or sell too. I reported to the better buisness bureau and if you had similar occurances to do so aswell. Get these shady clowns flagged and investigated for bad buisness practice! read more

On 2/1/17, I bought a car from CarMax. First off, when they say in the ads that they don't pounce on you, that is absolutely accurate. I walked in to the showroom (very big, very nice, very clean) and was greeted at the desk by Orlando Gulley. I had done my research and came in with a list of 3 cars that I wanted to look at, and those were the cars I was shown- no pressure, no "you think you want this but you really want this" kind of talk. In fact, one of the cars I was looking at was $1000 more than the other one, and Orlando was very honest about the fact that for the features I was interested in, the more expensive car probably wasn't for me. I have never had such a pleasant, low-pressure car buying experience. Now, on the other end- I also attempted to sell my car to CarMax. When I came in to look initially, I got what I believe to be a very fair offer on my old car, and I was intending to use it as partial payment for the new one. I was literally to the point of signing paperwork when someone in the finance department informed me that they couldn't buy my car because the registration was expired. Now, please don't get me wrong- expired registration is 100% my fault, and everyone involved was extremely nice about the whole thing (which is why there are no stars deducted). However, it would have been nice if, when they inspected my car, they had mentioned that it would be an issue. But, all that being said, I'm working on getting it registered now, and still fully plan to take it back to CarMax to sell when I get that settled. The issue with the registration turned what should have been a very simple cash deal into one which involved financing at the last minute. However, Orlando never lost his cool, and just very calmly took me back to the desk and took care of the financing. Even with that whole issue, I was still out in two hours. So, moral of the story, I will always check with CarMax in the future for buying cars. I was very happy with my experience, with Orlando (and several other people in the dealership and finance department), and with my 2014 Hyundai Accent. Thank you! read more

A very disappointing experience. I went with my 80 year old mother to purchase a 2013 BMW we found online. Had to drive almost 2 hours to look at it. My mother paid cash and we took it home. In the paperwork it was guaranteed that it had never been in an accident, had new parts and was in overall great condition. (All the right boxes were checked in their paperwork.) She took it to her mechanic to check it out the next day and he found that it certainly HAD been in an accident, had incorrect and cheap parts installed, the wrong coolant was added, belts and brakes were needing imminent replacement and more. Needless to say she took it back (another 2 hour drive each way) and got her $$ back. But it would have saved everyone a lot of hassle if they had been truthful about the condition of the car.
