We have lived in Wyomissing for 13 years and only just tried Carlos recently. WHAT WERE WE WAITING FOR!?!?!?!? Sooooooo yummy! Pizza is fantastic! Wings are amazing and their sandwiches are served on the yummiest bread.....pretty sure it's homemade. We had a few requests with the preparation of our food which was followed perfectly and delivery was super fast and the driver is extremely friendly!! This is our new go-to place!!!! I've probably driven by this place on Penn Avenue about 100 times and never even noticed it. In fact, it wasn't until a recent Google search that I stumbled upon Carlo's and realized it was only a few blocks away. But such is the nature of Penn Ave. in West Reading - it's a bustling little street with a ton of small businesses and boutiques crammed into a small stretch. The sad reality is a number of hidden gems go unearthed because our attention is captured by the bright lights of surrounding storefronts. When I was on my Italian sub bender, I was eating about four or five every week. When it was late night and none of the local mom & pop stores were open, I would satisfy my hunger by ordering Italians at Wawa... usually two or three at a time so I had some for the next day. Yeah, it was bad. Carlo's was going to cure me. All I had to do was find a great sandwich shop nearby that would blow all the others away. I would find the perfect sub and never again settle for an inferior product. I mean, that was the idea. But sadly Carlo's couldn't deliver. Let's start with perhaps the most important component of a good sub - the bread. It was kind of oddly compressed, like it had been in some sort of press. Don't get me wrong - I love a good chew when it comes to sub rolls - but by pressing the roll (and they must do this to some extent - whether it be on purpose or not), it created this artificially firm texture to the point where it was almost tough, like eating gristle on a piece of meat. And the biggest offender of all here is that it tasted like the bread was frozen. That's a huge no-no. Fresh bread is ideal. But from the taste and texture, it really seems like they get a huge order of bread and freeze what they can't use that week. Then they that that frozen bread later and serve it. Defrosted bread in a sub shop is pretty much the worst thing you can do. If Carlo's wants to elevate their sub game, I have a few tips: 1.) Don't skimp on the ingredients in your sandwiches. If we wanted to get the short end of the stick, we'd hit up Subway. You cut down on the meats in your sandwiches over the years. Yes, costs are going up, but so did your prices. No one wants to buy a sub and get 75% roll and 25% ingredients. 2.) Cook cheese steaks to order. This hits home with me, since I love a good cheese steak. Your steak meat is horribly dry. Seriously, it's borderline dog-food. Don't cook a huge portion hours in advance. That strip steak takes minutes to cook. No need to cook the meat hours in advance and let it dry out. 3.) Buy and use fresh rolls. If you already are, more power to you. But don't freeze them and serve them. I know it's tempting to freeze things that you don't want to throw out, but you are only making your customers suffer. read more

This is not the first time getting food from Carlos'. This is however the first time I was disappointed. I ordered dinner for delivery that included their pasta and meatballs and an order of mild wings. Everything arrived hot and well packaged. The pasta was cooked well and the sauce was ok. The acidity was a bit strong. I was pleasantly surprised at the 4 meatballs that were included, although I don't think they were hand made, they tasted like Sysco meatballs. Not bad but not fresh. The salad was nice with nice black olives and the creamy Italian dressing was a typical store bought dressing. The biggest issue I had with the pasta was that it was not drained well causing a rather large amount of water in the bottom of the dish. This is an immediate turn off for me and I could not finish the meal. Now to the wings. The wings themselves were soggy and over cooked. The main issue was that they were sitting in the sauce which you could easily see how much oil was mixed into the sauce. You can actually see the oil in my pic. I was disappointed with the flavor and the texture of the meat. I ate a flat and a leg and that was it. They just weren't enjoyable. I feel as though they just had an off night and it showed in their food. I probably will order other food at some point but it won't be any time soon. read more

I'm going to come back and review again at some point , but for now, they get "average". Called the order in at 445 on a Saturday, was told it would be 40-50 minutes, showed up a little over an hour (was still hot so thats a plus). We ordered our usual, a mushroom/pepperoni pizza. The sauce was good. The pepperoni was good. The mushrooms could have been more plentiful, but... the issue was the crust. it was boring rolled crust instead of a nice airy dough. Meh. The fries were frozen French fries covered in cheez whiz, as is the pizza delivery standard. I wish someone would finally just make really good hard fried fries, and then add a little bowl of dipping cheese... would make it all much better. Got the spaghetti with meat sauce and cheesecake slice. The meat sauce was perfect and pasta made perfectly as well! The cheesecake was OK but It's a pizza and pasta shop not a cheesecake place, so that's expected. Would definitely get again for my pasta craving! We've ordered from Carlos many times over the years and have always loved their food. They make their own bread for the sandwiches and for the rolls with your meal. The bread is always fresh and it's not overly thick so you don't feel like toor sandwich is all bread like at other places. The sandwiches are full and not skimpy. Their pastas and sauces are amazing, too. The Strombolis are the best we've had anywhere, stuffed well and with lots of cheese. We've also used their catering for parties and tailgates, and it's always been delicious. We highly recommend them! read more

Not sure why this place doesn't have any reviews! Stopped in for lunch since I was craving a good Italian sandwich. They look like a typical pizzeria with a few dining chairs and tvs. The service was great and the guy was patient. They make their bread fresh which is always a bonus. I got a large Carlos special and I am a loyal customer now. Great soft roll lightly toasted. The meats are great quality, for $8 you can't beat. I would recommend this place and look forward to try some of their other menu items. read more

Food is good but I do not recommend door dash or grubhub to deliver. Orders are ALWAYS late and food is cold. They also skim on the Pizza toppings fir $2 a topping. It's not worth adding toppings since they place only half of what any other pizza joint does. read more

Wasn't happy with the takeout at all. The pasta dish was made incorrectly and wasn't given a fork to eat it. The wait was long too.

A friend from work recommended we try this pizza place on Penn Ave. and we ordered pizza and wings and the food and service were great. We are going to eat there again tonight. Only drawback is the Penn Ave. traffic and tight parking but the food is worth it. read more

my husband and I are always looking for a great steak sandwich but haven't been able to find. sw carlos italian restauran in our travels and called in an order. mine comes out of my mouth without even thinking "mushroom cheese steak, no sauce, no onions with hot peppers. I clarify with banana peppers. my husband ordered something different. we picked them up, took them home and started eating them. well, I noticed that the peppers looked funny, like shredded and there was no cheese. turns out the shredded stuff were onions. so shame on them for not getting my easy to understand order correct. it ruined my whole night, being nauseated from eating the onions. read more
