1st time visit to Caribou on Oralabor Rd in Ankeny. It was mid afternoon, and there was one person in front of me getting a huge order. I ordered my decaf coffee, asked for cream and sugar, and she mixed it PERFECT. Hard to find good decaf coffee, and if you know what I mean, this was not bitter, and did not have that "metallic" taste. 5 stars for this Caribou! Caribou is , if you are not familiar with them, the rustic, plaid-wearing, woodsy cousin to Starbucks. Which is NOT to say that it is a coffee bumpkin, Caribou Coffee does a fine job creating a smoother blend of coffees, and a more interesting spread of food options (I especially enjoy the Chicken Apple sausage Daybreaker breakfast sandwich). And while the staff will look at you in confusion if you try to order up an iced toddy, their version of cold press is close enough. This location is staffed with friendly and reasonably knowledgeable baristas, but Caribou regional management keeps this store-front understocked (frequent chai and soy milk outages). Parking is barely adequate, but frequently difficult to navigate as it is frequently bottle-necked by the line drive-thru traffic. The closer you can park to the building itself, the better off you will be. I don't come here often, but when I do I always feel welcomed! I think Its a great place for all coffee drinkers. Dark coffee drinkers to lots of creamer and a little coffee! Staff in the drive thru was super friendly and bubbly full of spirit and energy!!! The gingerbread cookie dark chocolate mocha is amazing. They give you the choice between dark, milk, or white chocolate which is great!!! Something I didn't expect but which was a nice surprise!!! I wish they kept the maple bacon and gruyere breakfast sandwhich year round. Oohy gooey gruyere cheese on chibatta bread is amazing on a cold winter morning or anytime for that matter. Wait was a little bong but I didn't mind because everything came out super high quality and fresh!!! If you haven't tried caribou coffee it's like the north woods version of a Starbucks. I took the drive-thru here after my lunch to get my coffee fix. I had always enjoyed Caribou as it brings something different to the table than Starbucks. The ordering process was quick and easy here. What surprised me the most was the staff, they are very friendly, they were providing exceptional service for just a drive-thru customer. They recommended items that were good when we asked, and offered us bakery samples while we waited. The coffee itself was good, nothing that stands out from other coffee shops though. I also tried their grilled cheese sandwich which was freshly made and tasty. I would definitely come back to see how the shop is on the inside. read more

I am in the midst of moving from Minnesota and just stopped in to this Caribou. I would visit my local caribou almost every day and have been obsessed with the creamy cooler from last year. I know how to make it and pay the extra cost to up it so I can continue to get something like it even though they discontinued the drink. I just went through and I'm pretty sure they dumped sugar packets into my drink. There were granular chunks of sugar (or salt??? I just had someone else taste my drink and they spit it out its so bad) coming up through the straw from the first sip. My sister ordered a very simple moosed iced vanilla latte. It tastes terrible. Like burnt coffee with milk. Which we are pretty convinced at this point is exactly what it is. We're throwing both away because they are literally undrinkable. I have never had such terrible service at Caribou; from the guy who couldn't seem to get the orders straight to the lady at the door who seemed like we were inconveniencing her. If you want to serve terrible coffee with a bad attitude, do us all a favor and go work at Burger King. read more

I am not sure how this location runs out of the most basic things all the time. I try and go to this location around 5:30 am every day and this location runs out of Chai tea on a monthly basis. Also the price of the coffee depends on the person that is ringing you up. read more

On Christmas road trip and did drive thru for a quick breakfast. The girl working the window was less than friendly. After receiving our food we noticed there was a trivia question and answered it. She said she'd have to redo the receipt to receive a discount and rushed us along the way and shut the window on us! 9:00 a.m. So good. I didn't come here with high hopes after reading previous reviews. Ordered my mocha, Mint Condition with Dark Chocolate, waited maybe 5 minutes, barista apologized for the wait, I told him it didn't kill me. He laughed, I laughed. Smooth. I try to support local family run, by this place is so poorly run that they make it tough. Orders are processed in a disorganized and sloooow manner, the employees are stressed and rude, and the food is just not good. Lattes are made by people whom I don't think have ever drank one. And the bagels are just kinda "meh" with over the top fake flavors. Just sitting here watching, several things keep going wrong and tables don't get cleaned as the 9 employees stand around cluelessly trying to serve only maybe 10 customers. Had the absolute worst experience at this location today. Went through the drive through and the girl taking my order cut me off halfway through my order and gave me my total and said see you at the window. I told her I had one more drink to order. She didn't even respond after I told her the next drink. So we go up to the window to pay, it takes her forever to open the window even tho she's just standing there. She finally takes my card and hands it back. After sitting there for 5 minutes waiting for our drinks, another girl comes up to the window and opens it and says "your total is 3 dollars" after I already paid for our drinks. So I told her we already paid and she then proceeds to hand me two steaming hot drinks, no sleeves. I ask her what the drinks are so we can be sure we are getting the right thing. She hands them to me, says absolutely nothing, and then shuts the window and turns around and walks away. Both of the girls were very unprofessional, acted like they had a stick shoved up you know where. Will no longer be going to this location if they have rude workers who act incredibly unprofessional. Wish I wouldn't have been in a hurry otherwise I would have gone inside and got their names and called management. read more

I love the four big leather chairs in front of the fireplace near the front door of Ankeny store. It is fairly new store so furniture is still nice. I go there a couple of times a week. A mug of light roast is $1.69 which is cheaper than most places in Ankeny and refills are free. The light roast is mild and the dark roast has the stronger bean flavor. I drink either flavor depending on how I feel that day. I always go inside so I don't know about drive up service. The staff is friendly and fast for inside service. read more

We are definitely not strangers to Caribou Coffee, but had never been to this location as we are not local. When we first came in we were the only people in the shop and it took several minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. When we attempted to order a small Blended hot chocolate we were very rudely told that they would only make it as a child's drink , we were surprised by this because we've never had problems ordering it at other locations. Then I had ordered a drink with an extra shot in it as we were in the middle of an 8-hour drive to Rochester Minnesota and I needed the boost. When my drink order was called I did not hear her state anything about the extra shot so I asked her if one had been put in, the young lady rolled her eyes then went and checked her order screen. She then informed me that since I had not told them that I wanted the extra shot that she would remake my drink but I would have to pay extra for the shot. I then stated to her that it was not my error, it was their mistake and that I had no problems with paying for the extra shot but frankly at this point she should have happily been willing to just remakes a drink and add the extra shot for me as a courtesy for the inconvenience. She had no response for me. I then calmly pointed out to this young lady that she seemed extremely irritable and inconvenienced by her customers and instead of saying anything remotely close to an apology all she could tell me was that it had been a hectic day. I have worked in customer service for many years of my life and I understand the frustration and challenges that often come with it especially with challenging customers. However in this case how we were treated was in complete contrast to how we were treating the employees, in other words we were being kind,patient, and cooperative towards them( even after being on the road for 5 hours) and were being treated by them as if we were a demanding, nuisance for having the audacity to order coffee drinks....at a coffee house. I do have to say that the young lady who rang us up (who appeared to be new) tried very hard to be polite and take care of us, but the other young lady who was training her or had more experience was nothing short of rude and should perhaps remember that those drink sales are what keep her employed. If we ever stop in Ankeny again we'll definitely turn right, towards Starbucks. read more
