The food here is absolutely fantastic but the wait is crazy. It's not because the line is ever long, it's because the service is insanely slow. From my understanding the food is cooked in the morning so all one would have to do is walk in and pick a size and boom you walk out with food. Not at this place. Stew peas!!!!! I was happy that this place made jerk chicken and rice and peas. Because I was running home and didn't have ANY intention of cooking dinner. Considering my last experience with an alleged caribbean restaurant, I was wary. And Caribbean Grill doesn't even serve jerk pork! So I was on guard. But anyway, I'll try almost anything once. I'm glad I did. Why the chicken wasn't as dry as I like it, it was plenty spicy and well priced. Further you get free plantain with your meal. FREE. And I am not too proud to say that I am a plantain addict who will get her fix at any cost. They also have stew peas, which you don't just get anywhere. And it's my favourite Jamaican dish. So much so, I almost wish it weren't on the menu, so that it could remain an island secret. But again, I am rarely in any mood to cook dinner. And if they can make me feel at home, I'll pay double. I've only ordered beef patties from here. So in all fairness my review is based solely on the taste of the patty, the freshness and filling to pastry assessment. The patty is delicious. This is my first review ever and I have to say that I love this spot and must give credit where credit is due! This is a small intimate spot for some delectably authentic Jamaican food. My personal "go to" item is the Ackee and Saltfish. The patties are always really good as well! I could pretty much recommend anything on this menu and you won't go wrong! The jerk chicken dinner with rice and peas is my go to meal when I go to Caribbean grill. Jerk chicken is nice and spicy(well seasoned). I can't comment on the food because I didn't get to have any. We walked in at 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon. I had never been there before, so I called ahead because my boyfriend wanted oxtail (and knowing Caribbean restaurants, I wanted to make sure they had it). When we arrived, the woman walked out and just looked at us. Then after an awkward pause, she asked "Would you like something?" (How about we start off with a hello. She wasn't "mean" per se, it just felt like I had disrupted her). I asked her what kind of veggies she had for the veggie roti. "We only have cabbage". (How do you make vegetable roti with only cabbage? Am I missing something?) What about potato? "Oh I would have to make it". (Oh I'm sorry I thought I was in a restaurant). I asked her if she had any veggie patties, didn't have that either. How is it acceptable to not have basic ingredients? There were no customers in the establishment and I can see why. I can honestly say that it has been a disappointment trying to find good consistent Caribbean food in NJ. I'm a Caribbean girl from NY and I keep trying to get my African American boyfriend (from Jersey) to open up to Caribbean food and each time there is an issue with these restaurants. Either the customer service is lacking, no food items or both. I really would like to support small businesses, but these situations make it difficult. If i had the option to gift a zero star that is what I would do. They were recommended to me and that was the worst choice ever. Seem like a big open space with a whole bunch of wobbly chairs and tables. As we sat and ate, I feared that my 2 yr old would topple over because the chairs just weren't sturdy; so eventually I had to put her on my lap because there were no high chairs offered/ available. Friends and I had dinner here Friday night. Authentic Jamaican fare prepared by authentic Jamaican women. My friend who is from Jamaica loved it and so did the rest of our party. Avoid if you can (and yes you can, there are other options down the road). I've been to this place twice. Both times it was empty (first sign of a bad restaurant). Both time there was no one in the restaurant either, it took the lady about 3 minutes to come out from the kitchen. Food was disappointing, seems like it was just thrown in a microwave as when I got home some portions were piping hot and other portions of the meat were cold. The second time I went there I went to get a drink. She didn't know the price of the drink and stared at the wall. First it was $2.25 then she just said "Three dollars will do it". I myself have managed businesses and this is concerning. I don't know if the lady is the owner or just an employee, but no care at all. Called ahead for a curry roti.I arrived for pick-up and i had to wait10-15 minutes until it was done. The curry wasn't the best (nothing special about it...) the put in on the roti with cabbage so the oil and water from the chicken and cabbage made the roti soggy :/! After reading the reviews I decided to try this place, mainly because the fish is made to order. I thought this restaurant would be a really nice place to eat, I was wrong!!! First off the restaurant looked dingy. Being that it was in Montclair, I was expecting the restaurant to look more like the environment that it was in. It looked more like one of those dirty restaurant you will find in Newark or Irvington. The lady comes from the kitchen and yells to me can I help you ....Ghetto. The fish she gave me was not FRESH AT ALL!!!. It was not seasoned, and tasted as if it was cooked from yesterday. The meat was hard and sticking to the fish bone. Anyone who eats real eschovitch fish knows that fish doesn't stick to the bone unless it is old. I payed $12.00 for it which is standard for fish.
