Oxtails, red beans and rice and greens
Dana K.

Authentic Jamaican food! My bf and I visited and met Chef Nev on a Friday evening. Entering the restaurant felt like walking into your mom's house and smelling home cooked food. We ordered the curry goat and oxtails with rice and peas and greens. Everything was fresh, tender and well seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. Now, the rice and peas and oxtails have a kick, so if you're not a fan of spice, you may want to try something different. Overall a great experience and we will be returning.

Off rip, this place smacks. Been hearing about this place for a while now, saw them blow up on TikTok/IG a while ago. Finally got to try them out. Im hyped to say, this will be my Caribbean food spot now for good. Wife and I Both ordered the same thing, large jerk chicken dinner, and a beef patty. She got cabbage and plantains, I got greens and plantains. A. The chicken was on point. I appreciate that they're actually hot. A bit too spicy for wifey, but for me it was ON POINT. The spice rub under the sauce is the realness. Chicken was hella juicy, hella tender. B. Rice and beans is in fact, rice, and beans. Not overcooked, good chew, flavorful, I smashed all of mine. C. Greens/cabbage, I'd prefer the greens, I like my greens salty, these were perfect, not cooked to oblivion either. The cabbage was smacking too, just on the sweet side, wifey approved. D. THE. PLANTAINS. I know, I know, they aren't dessert, but I always treat them like dessert. Perfectly caramelized, sweet, and chewy. I'm 100% going to get these as a side some day and eat them with a scoop of ice cream. I will report back with my findings after I do so. E. Beef patty was a standard beef patty. Good, would make an easy lunch. Overall, go eat here. If you made it this far into this review, you either are the owner of the place, or really weird. Nice to meet you either way.

Got Jerk Chicken delivered. It was pretty good. Very flavorful. Be warned this is SPICY but not overwhelming but "has a kick." It does come with rice or your choice of rice and beans mixed as well as another side such as mixed vegetables (I think these were from frozen, hence the minus, I think I bought these exact mixed vege in a grocery store near you), which blunts the heat. Chicken was tender and moist, rice was abundant. Service was quick. Food arrived warm which was anticipated given it is quite a distance from our house.

I learned about this restaurant from "Mr. Chimetime", who is a food blogger that travels to different cities and reviews different restaurants and food. I saw the review for the Caribbean Authentic Cuisine on the food bloggers IG page, and was excited to try the restaurant, seeming I wasn't aware there was an Caribbean restaurant close in the area where I live. I had already been told by my coworker a day or so before I went, that the line was super long, and that she waited over two hours to pick her food order up, and still left the restaurant empty handed bc the owner had run out of food. She suggested to not try the restaurant at this time to allow the hype of the restaurant to die down. However, I decided to still try it out. I went to the restaurant at 1:00 pm on a Saturday, and the restaurant opened up around 2:00 pm, in which I stood in line that hour in between. The line was starting to get very long, and I was the 8th person in line. Eventually, about another hour later, I was able to order my food. Now, after ordering the food, the turn around of receiving the order wasn't too bad, maybe about 15 - 20 minutes. But overall, I was at the restaurant about 2 1/2 hours. Overall, I thought the food was good. I've tried other Jamaican Restaurants that the food was better in my opinion. But the food was good. The owner of the restaurant was very nice. I would suggest, for customers that are interested in trying the restaurant, please pack your patience. I believe the interest of the restaurant after receiving nice reviews on such a huge public platform, has definitely increased the amount of customers than what the owner is used to. It's no excuse; but that is my assessment of the long lines, and running out of food, online orders not being honored, etc. I ordered the large Jerk Chicken Dinner, with Cabbage (I wish the cabbage was more seasoned) and Rice and Red Beans. I also order a Beef Pattie, but I had eaten the pattie before taking a picture.

Nasty flavorless ox tails. Dry rice.

Don't even attempt to get food from here unless you have at least 3 hours to waste. Ordering online isn't any better. (It will say food ready in 20 minutes and it will be hours. This food is NOT worth it. This food isn't even average. Most overrated Caribbean food ever. Hands down the worst Jamaican food in the deteoit area. Mr chimetime must have owed these people money with he bull shit review or he must have never had Caribbean food before. When you call, The phone goes straight to fax and no once answers. Their hours online and on the front door are inaccurate. They need to hire some more help. Mad slow, Arrived at 7:15 didn't get to order until after 915. Then it took another hour to get my food. When I got it home Order was incorrect and my entire family was disappointed. Worst Caribbean food I've ever had. 1 star because zero is not an option. This place is nasty. Food is nasty. Definite a pass. Don't waste your time. There are better family owned places with better Jamaican food in the city. Look at the pics. When you order yams and plantains as side and below are photos of what I got. ‍

Halal! They said meat comes from Saad's. Dominic helped us pick our food and he made us a special potato dish which was delicious. If you like meat this is a great place to come. The place had a nice vibe with Bob Marley playing. The drinks were very good. Definitely try the Jamaican patty

I seen this place on uber eats but thought the menu was super limited compared to what I was seeing online, so I decided to go in. This is 15 min away from Rochester Hills, and is near the corner of 16 and Dequindre. Great area, surrounds by a lot of great stores/restaurants. I.e I've cream shoppe, Dunkin, grocery store... There's a menu at the counter. Unfortunately, you should completely ignore that as it's not being used. Definitely wasn't expecting that. I specifically chose this place because it offered meat only, which none of the other Caribbean restaurants I've been to do. I probably should of left but still decided to try it. Good customer service for sure. I allowed Dom to put me together since I was completely LOST after being told the menu wasn't accurate. So! Upon entry the available menu is written in chalk on the side of the counter. There IS available seating to dine in, so if you'd like to immediately indulge you can! I took mine home and it was still very hot! So if you order through a third party, u should be fine. Portion size is ok. I really didn't want all this rice and beans and welp, still got them. Oxtails could of used a tad bit more salt, more seasoning, it was a bit bland. Veggies were ok, collards were good, and cabbage was too. The size of the oxtails were a bit small for me. The drink was a shocker for me. Mainly because I didn't specify which one, so I didn't expect the punch of ginger I got lol I would say keep it COLD. Glad to have a black owned business in the suburbs!

Found this vegan friendly restaurant with the help of Yelp. This spot is tucked away in a strip mall. Plenty of parking. Glowing neon open sign welcomes customers. Dominic was behind the counter friendly and welcoming as can be. I researched the menu and found they have one vegan plate which is veggies (cabbage, collards, yams, plantains) and rice. I would love to see more beans, lentils and grains added to the menu for plant based folks. We ordered two smalls. The small is plenty for one. The juices all sounded intriguing, so we ordered the guava sorrel and sour sop. The sour sop is delicious and unique to this restaurant. The guava sorrel is tart and tasty as well. We took a seat at one of the round tables to wait for our meals. Mellow reggae played while we hung out. Our juices came up quickly and we sipped on those for a few minutes while our food order was being made. Neville, the owner, came out to check on the customers waiting at tables. There were just four of us this evening. He chatted with us about the heart and soul of this restaurant. If he doesn't eat it, he doesn't cook it. I like that motto! Neville wants customers to support their immune systems with good ingredients. This gem of a shop is about a year old. I look forward to many more trips here.

My first time here and I will definitely be back. I ordered one of my favorites, Curry Goat, which came with peas and rice, cabbage, greens and the delicious goat. I also bought a side of plantain which was amazing. The owners seem eager to please and are truly hoping you enjoy their food. They have a no frills dining area with about 6 four top tables. Since I am sure the rest of their menu is as good as what I had tonight, I will be back to work my way through their other choices, with a side of plantain. Would you do it any other way?

Oxtails! Jerk chicken! Red beans and rice! Cabbage! Mixed veggies (hated them since childhood. This ain't on them)
Banjo P.

Bestie and I came from Oakland, CA to visit Detroit. Came across this joint and had to try. Literally the best jerk chicken I've ever had. I'll be honest, jerk chicken NEVER tasted like anything to me! Just like baked chicken. Today, after having theirs, I now know what Jerk means. This chicken was fire! Spicy, moist, welll seasoned! Prepared with love and authenticity you can taste! The oxtails ran from the bones they were so got damn tender! The sides were all seasoned and you got alot. This place is a must!! Domo the dreaded brotha from behind the counter is an experience in itself! Great convo! Well versed! Organic! Just Love the spot, keep doing what you doing!

Here to write a view nearly 6 years later to continue to give kudos to one of my favorite spots in…read moreDetroit! I have consistently come here to get food throughout the years and it has been so rewarding to continue to see Yum Village be such a pillar in the city and in the food industry! The service here is incredible, you don't bus anything yourself. I also noticed that the staff that day was all women, from everyone front of house to the chefs in the back as well preparing the food, which was extra fun! They are so attentive to us and even when there was a snaffoo with on of my party's orders. They paid with cash and I think perhaps that messed up the tracking of the order through the system? I'm not entirely sure. As for the food, Yum Village has maintained some of the same dishes throughout the years, while also adding and/or rotating a ton of other dishes through the menu. I can definitely confirm that the garlic parm jerk chicken remains my favorite and that the spice level, while still plentiful and intense, has eased up a bit in recent years. Either that or that I have become more spice heat-tolerant! Either way, the portions also remain huge, so there was a ton of food to take home! I love the truffle collard greens, the deeply unique and flavorful corncakes, and also the star of the show this go around was the deliciously complex fried cheesy fufu! It oozes so much flavor and is the perfect addition to any meal and very shareable as well! Keep up the great work, Yum Village!!

Went with a couple…read morefriends for lunch and I got the Classic Village Combo with jerk chicken, jollof rice, sweet and spicy plaintain, and I also got a side of the truffle oil collards. Everything was DELICIOUS! A kind of spicy that slowly builds too, which I found really pleasant. I also tried bites off some of friends' orders, like a bit of cornbread, the fried cheesy fufu, the garlic parm chicken. Everything was so good. Huge portions! Even the smallest size option was enough food to have leftovers for at least another big meal. They have bigger size options too for the extra hungry. Only bumping it down a star because they had some trouble with one of my friends' order. I guess it didn't go through to the kitchen, but one of the ladies noticed and asked my friend for her receipt so they could get her food going. However, seemed like they then lost that too because it wasn't until after two of us got our food and had been munching for a bit that they realized no one had started on our friend's order. Came out fast after that. Easily 5 stars without the ordering hiccup!

It's located in a small building set back from the main road, and the lighting is dim, so you might miss it if you're not careful. The parking lot is also quite small. Upon entering, I was greeted warmly. The employees are behind bulletproof glass, but don't let that discourage you from enjoying one of the best meals ever! The server was kind and patient as I decided what to order. After a quick phone call, I ordered a jerk chicken meal with double rice and peas, and a curry goat meal with greens and rice and peas. The friendly gentleman informed me it would take about 10 minutes, and my food was ready exactly as promised. I always check my food before leaving any place, and everything looked and smelled amazing. The portions were generous for the price, and we could have shared a meal, but I was craving their curry goat! Since we didn't have far to drive, we started eating right away before heading home. The jerk chicken was perfectly seasoned, and all our food was fresh and piping hot. The rice and peas were tender and flavorful. However, I must say that the curry goat was the star of the show! It was tender and moist with just the right amount of spice. My body isn't usually fond of spicy foods, but this had the perfect kick. No extra seasoning was needed on anything! We both thoroughly enjoyed our dinners and couldn't finish even a fourth of either one. Wow, what an incredible takeout experience we had from this hidden Caribbean gem! It's tucked away in a small, dimly lit building off the main road--you might miss it if you're not paying attention. The parking lot's pretty tiny, but trust me, the food is 100% worth it! The moment I walked in, I was greeted with such warmth. Sure, the staff works behind bulletproof glass, but that didn't take away from how friendly and welcoming they were. The server was super patient while I took my time deciding. After a quick call with my bae, I ordered the jerk chicken with double rice and peas, plus a curry goat meal with greens and more rice and peas. The awesome guy at the counter said it'd be ready in 10 minutes, and guess what? Right on the dot! Of course, I had to check our food before leaving--habit--and oh my gosh, it looked and smelled AMAZING. Huge portions too; honestly, we could've shared, but there was no way I was passing on that curry goat! We couldn't even wait to get home--we dug right in. The jerk chicken? Mind-blowingly good. Perfectly seasoned, juicy, and packed with flavor. The rice and peas? Tender, flavorful, and just the right texture. But let me tell you, the CURRY GOAT stole the show! Tender, moist, with the perfect hit of spice--I usually can't handle spicy food, but this was just right. No extra seasoning needed, not even a sprinkle. We were both in foodie heaven and couldn't even finish a fourth of our meals because the portions were that generous. If you're craving authentic Caribbean flavors that'll blow your mind, this spot is a MUST. Don't miss it--seriously, your taste buds will thank you!
