I only have one descriptive word to say about Elena Hernandez. Angel! Sometimes you hear horror stories about home caregivers that would make anyone nervous to leave a dying loved one with a total stranger. From the very first day I met her, I knew she would be exactly what our family was praying for. We had spent months and gone through too many caregivers to the point we almost gave up looking. We had decided that it was best if family took turns caring for him instead of more disappointing care. Then by divine grace, we met this incredible young woman with a heart bigger than her 5'2" frame. Instantly we knew that God heard our prayers and sent her to care for our loved one. A perfectionist in every way, she took over from us completely. Her professionalism shined and we knew he was now in the best care. Elena genuinely loved her job and told us all the time. It didn't take long to realize she wasn't just saying words. We could see she really mean't it. Her words were always reassuring and comforting to us and we knew that she would give him her very best. Because of Elena, our lives returned to some form of normalacy as she took over our loved one. We still came to the house often and she always had everything under control. The day he passed away, my family and I adopted her. She had won our love and respect on the highest level. I can't recommend this most loving, most professional, most trusting caregiver enough. She not only cared for him and eased his mind until the end, but even ours as well. By luck, or truly, by the grace of God, we met Elena when we weren't even looking for a new caretaker for my father. As the story would unfold within a month after meeting her, we hired her to be my dad's primary caretaker. After having several caretakers over the last year and a half, none of the caretakers we had came close to the level of care and natural real love we saw Elena give our father. My dad was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure and COPD and was eventually put under hospice care. Heartbroken, we asked Elena if she could help us more with additional hours also with increasing responsibility with care which my dad would need. My dad had another caretaker at the time who worked a different shift but we felt Elena would be best suited based on my dad's condition. Elena amazingly agreed. Over the next few weeks after this began, Elena made all my dad's meals, made sure he took his meds, gave him several bed baths, helped with toileting, had many conversations with him and was a great companion for him, and really, just took the best care of him. When he felt scruffy and unshaven, she cut his hair and shaved his beard. My dad had always been very difficult for caretakers but with Elena he was so taken back by her, he did everything she said with out a fight. We had never seen that happen before with him. The week of my dad passing, Elena was no longer his caretaker, she was now his own family. My stoic and serious father even told Elena he loved her which was a pretty big deal and we told her so. She continued to take amazing care of him during his last days staying up with him all through the night. During his passing she was right there holding his hand with the rest of us. And he wouldn't have wanted it any other way. There's not enough words nor money to express all we received from Elena with her care and love. Our entire family has so much gratitude for Elena in being the best possible caretaker we could have asked for. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a caretaker who is respectful, patient and who goes above and beyond in ensuring her clients are well cared for. She performs her job with so much compassion, empathy, skill and grace and clients are left feeling dignified in a situation where it's so easy to lose that with many other caretakers out there.
