Once you've passed the fresh fish it may be fresh donuts, fresh fruit, not so fresh books or even freshly baked bread you smell. The latter will be coming from The Bread Stall. It can be found on the lower level of the market and it's a busy little stall. It's got bread of all varieties freshly delivered that day, as well as loads of cakes and other baked treats. If you're unfamiliar with Welsh cakes then it's crucial that you go right now to buy one for a mere 40p from The Bread Stall. If it's night time then perhaps that is slightly unreasonable and I will allow you to wait until the morning.

They sell white Petit Pans, Soft Baps and Finger Rolls at about 25 pence each. They also sell large and small cracked wheat (brown) rolls, crunchy French Sticks and ready-sliced tin loaves. It functions more as an eatery than a bakery therefore, though there are plenty of pastries to buy if you want, including the famous Portuguese baked custard tarts. It's now a popular venue for coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. They serve a variety of savoury and sweet pastries as well as sandwiches and toasties. Although there are plenty of items containing Portuguese ham and sausages, there are also some vegetarian items, such as a spinach and onion omelette ciabatta sandwich, and a Portuguese style vegetarian pastry. More familiar will be the wide range of sweet pastries, tarts and cakes which seem to the main draw for most of the clientele. I had the veggie omelette and custard cake. They also do a special of soup, toastie and cake for £7. All very nice and the coffee's good too.

You can get pies, pasties, quiches, pizzas and wonderful cakes. My favourite is an apple cake thing which is lovely. Because they're a small concern it often depends what time of day you go as to what's left. The main reason I go in is because they make they're own bread. Importantly they don't just make bread from wheat but also from spelt. Quite a few people are gluten intolerant so spelt is a good alternative. If I'm not mistaken spelt is native to the UK and was the flour of choice before cheap wheat from the Commonwealth became common. So with transport costs high and a move towards food sourced locally spelt is likely to become an important part of our diet in the future. Get down there and give it a try but it does sell out quickly.

They have classics such as blueberry and chocolate chip, plus a high fibre muffin, which you can wolf down while pretending you're doing your body a favour. They also have low fat and gluten-free options. Oh, and if you buy five, you get the sixth free. Personally, I'd prefer some of the other cakes on offer, such as their moist carrot cake or the incredibly rich mud cake. Apparently, they do decent coffees here as well - but I'd rather just grab take away because there are more pleasant cafes around if you want to sit down for a longer break...

God bless the Cornish Bakehouse…read more Sat on the corner of Church Street and the Hayes, between O'Neill's and 10 Feet Tall, the small counter-shop is a beacon to all hungry men everywhere. The pasties come in three sizes, the smallest of which is "Large", so that should give you an idea of the kind of thing we're dealing with here. Serving a selection of pasties filled with everything from chicken and mushroom, to traditional cornish filling and my personal favourite of Steak and Stilton (so good it deserves to be capitalised), alongside pizza slices, pies and wraps, it sends out an amazing smell that captures anyone in five miles with an operating olfactory sense. Granted, the fare is slightly more expensive than Greggs and that ilk and it is still a chain store, so you may feel you aren't quite getting the personal touch you like on your pasties (for my money, I don't want a personal touch anywhere near my pasty. If I can believe it was made entirely by machine and that none of the filling has ever been touched by a large Cornish man named David, I'm happy), but the food is still great and you get what you pay for. Word of warning, though. If you're dating a Cornish girl, never mention that you like this place. They will instantly bludgeon you to death with a pasty they consider properly crimped.

She stopped about 10 yards before pasty heaven and with straining face laid all her bags onto the floor. She then started to holler, "Karen! Donna!" - at this point two slimmer girls about 20 yards ahead of her (beyond the shop) stopped and turned round. She continued her plea, "PASTIES!!!!" She shouted pointed out the Cornish Bakehouse to her 2 mates. Her 2 friends looked at each other looked back at the larger friend and the one shouted, "Come Trace, we've just had lunch!" Tracey, then with a pained look of resignation picked up her bags and struggled past the pasty shop and its wonderful aroma. I know how Tracey feels - I find it hard to walk past this shop and even though the pasties are fresh and tasty - they can never deliver beyond what their smell promises but hey it doesn't stop me finding out.
