Muffin Break

Muffin Break

I had to make a very important decision at Muffin Break recently. Nothing life changing, but God…read moreknows it needed a cup of tea whilst I mulled over my thoughts. Located in an area that if you did a knee slide you'd easily pass 5 cafes by the time you stopped (If you were wearing long trousers. You'd stop very quickly if you were silly enough to try this with shorts...) However besides the normal price of tea etc as anywhere round here, what did attract me to it, was the sweets on offer. What I'm particularly talking about is there rocky road cake. Dark chocolate with marshmallows sat in and around it. Think the pair came to just under £5 and which isn't a lot when you've been propelled to heaven thanks to such a Godly desert.

Muffin Break is basically a bakery-cafe where they prepare a range of savoury and sweet products…read moresuch as pies, quiches, sandwiches, flans, muffins and cakes. The individual quiches are delicious, with fillings such as roasted vegetables or chicken & asparagus. The decor is fairly plain but it's the baking smells that will draw you in. If you have a sweet tooth, there's obviously a whole array of muffins on offer, with the selection changing each day. They have classics such as blueberry and chocolate chip, plus a high fibre muffin, which you can wolf down while pretending you're doing your body a favour. They also have low fat and gluten-free options. Oh, and if you buy five, you get the sixth free. Personally, I'd prefer some of the other cakes on offer, such as their moist carrot cake or the incredibly rich mud cake. Apparently, they do decent coffees here as well - but I'd rather just grab take away because there are more pleasant cafes around if you want to sit down for a longer break...

Cornish Bakehouse

Cornish Bakehouse

God bless the Cornish Bakehouse…read more Sat on the corner of Church Street and the Hayes, between O'Neill's and 10 Feet Tall, the small counter-shop is a beacon to all hungry men everywhere. The pasties come in three sizes, the smallest of which is "Large", so that should give you an idea of the kind of thing we're dealing with here. Serving a selection of pasties filled with everything from chicken and mushroom, to traditional cornish filling and my personal favourite of Steak and Stilton (so good it deserves to be capitalised), alongside pizza slices, pies and wraps, it sends out an amazing smell that captures anyone in five miles with an operating olfactory sense. Granted, the fare is slightly more expensive than Greggs and that ilk and it is still a chain store, so you may feel you aren't quite getting the personal touch you like on your pasties (for my money, I don't want a personal touch anywhere near my pasty. If I can believe it was made entirely by machine and that none of the filling has ever been touched by a large Cornish man named David, I'm happy), but the food is still great and you get what you pay for. Word of warning, though. If you're dating a Cornish girl, never mention that you like this place. They will instantly bludgeon you to death with a pasty they consider properly crimped.

It was about two summers ago I was walking past the Cornish Bakehouse and I saw another girl…read morewalking in the opposite direction. I say walking, she was wobbling a little, not only because it was hot but also because this lady, she we say, has probably struggled with her weight. If I had to guess I'd say she was probably the chunky side of 20 stone. Anyway she was sweating profusely, pain of effort etched on her face as she ambled towards the Cornish Bakehouse whilst clutching a two handfuls of shopping bags. She stopped about 10 yards before pasty heaven and with straining face laid all her bags onto the floor. She then started to holler, "Karen! Donna!" - at this point two slimmer girls about 20 yards ahead of her (beyond the shop) stopped and turned round. She continued her plea, "PASTIES!!!!" She shouted pointed out the Cornish Bakehouse to her 2 mates. Her 2 friends looked at each other looked back at the larger friend and the one shouted, "Come Trace, we've just had lunch!" Tracey, then with a pained look of resignation picked up her bags and struggled past the pasty shop and its wonderful aroma. I know how Tracey feels - I find it hard to walk past this shop and even though the pasties are fresh and tasty - they can never deliver beyond what their smell promises but hey it doesn't stop me finding out.

There's nothing more immediate and satisfying then a trip to Millies cookies. Just a stall inside…read morethe shopping centre there's not much to say about the actual store. Just that the people working there are general friendly and always laugh when we make 'Ooo' noises at all the delicious cookies we order. £3.99 will get you 6 of the little monsters. There is also drinks and milkshake to be had as well as hot drinks and ice creams to cool you down.

If you have a sweet tooth like I do then Millie's cookis si the place to go to. You can practically…read moresmell the freshness of the cookie and can see all those colours that make it so tempting you would step over your own mother just to get one... or six. I must confess I bought six of them and got another six free the other day thanks to my handy voucher on my iPhone. Needless to say that my belly was hurting after I ate them all in one night. Never again.... The staff members are friendly too recommending their favourite flavours and all the offers they do. They even do massive heart shaped cookies for valentines day. How sweet. Anyway, they also offer more than cookies including ice cream and milkshakes. But if you have ice cream, cookies and then a milkshake you better check yourself into A&E right now. It can get busy on certain periods and I wish there were some kind of seating area for you to relax and enjoy. Besides the lack of seating area, Millies Cookies had a delicious range of freshly baked goodness that will leave you always wanting more. Try not to make yourself sick now!
