This is a charming little cafe in a residential part of The West End. The menu includes coffee drinks, panini sandwiches, and tamals. If you are dining "in", you order at a counter and they bring it to your table. The LGBT (Lettuce, Guacamole, Bacon, and Tomato) was one of the best paninis I've ever had, with delicious ingredients and perfectly crisped. Avoid the tamals, which had almost nothing inside the corn meal, and were very dry. There is a nice selection of Latin American sauces and canned goods, and a refrigerator full of drinks--although not a single diet drink. I love coming to this little bodega / cafe hidden in the heart of the residential part of the West End, whether it's after a morning game of squash at the West End Community Centre, on a stroll by myself or during an afternoon walk with a friend. I particularly enjoy sitting outside the store with my a cup of coffee and a grilled panini or pressed croissant sandwich watching neighbours waking slowly by. The food servings are simple but, simply great. I tried the prosciutto panini and the ham and. cheese croissant. Both were delightfully lovely. Tiny little cafe and Latin market (mostly snacks and sauces) tucked into a mostly residential area, but it's full of character. Love the penny floor. The woman working the front was so nice and her attitude warmed the place up. No seating inside, but four tables outside. The two near the store are small, but the two on the other side of the sidewalk have seating to accommodate 4-5 people. When I got there for lunch around 12:30 Friday, the tables were all full, but one opened up right when I needed it and things had slowed down by the time I left about an hour later. If it's not busy and someone doesn't need the table, it's a nice location to relax for a bit. One thing to note is that they don't have reusable house mugs or plates, everything is packed to go, but they do accept personal cups for drinks. I had their Vegan Panini, a Tres Leches Cake, and the signature Dulce de Leche Macchiato. The panini was alright, but could've used more filling. I thought I could taste the eggplant, but couldn't really see much eggplant. The mustard was kind of overpowering and probably would've been less so if there were more vegetables to balance it. I think their ingredients were good quality, they possibly just didn't really know the right ratios for a vegetarian sandwich. The tres leches was the thing I had the lowest expectation for only because it was in a fridge to grab yourself and was packaged in a plastic cup, but it was possibly the best tres leches cake I've tried. The layering was so nice and I really enjoyed the light caramel-like flavour. The macchiato was also very good and the foam on top was cool. With a name like dulce de leche I was expecting very sweet but it was a pretty medium sweetness level. Their espresso is really good, I think even without the flavour, it's very smooth. I'd say generally the prices are really good. The panini ($10.5) was a little expensive for what it was probably worth because there wasn't a whole lot of filling even though it was a good size, but the other sandwiches are similar prices and look like much better deals. The drinks and baked goods are pretty affordable compared to other coffee shops downtown! read more

My friend knew I would love this place. The location, the cafe, the flooring, the ambiance. I think I fell in love with it all. I could come here and just chill with a book and a nice cup of coffee. Sitting outside or by the window looking out. it all just felt right. Warm and relaxing and a bit of a vintage feeling that could send me back to the 70's with me in my bell bottom jeans and a cotton tie dyed shirt. I had no idea this place existed. And then I see all these great reviews. Seems like it was closed for a bit, so not sure if the ownership these past few years is new? Still. coffee is best enjoyed in a relaxing set. Just like this. I think if you decide to go for a walk around the West End and if you end up here, you might want to stay a bit. Hmmmm I just noticed Shila B's reviews. She's a great Yelper, but I can tell that our terms of ambiance is different. Likely my 20 years plus age sets me to an era from a different generation. Still, check it out. I have come across their level of professionalism in only a few more places in Vancouver, but still this remains my favourite because they made me feel like I was home (which I haven't felt for a long time). It's in the quiet part of Cardero St, small and cozy, but they have a few outdoor seats (awesome rattan wingchairs!) when the weather is nice. The owner is friendly, laid back and interesting to talk to, as well as girls who work there (and they are exceptionally kind and clean... Maybe because they're from Europe?) and some of the regular patrons. The cappuccino is smooth and even though I drink coffee sweet, I had never had the need to put sugar in it. The small food menu they have is tasty and well-chosen, as well as desserts they have. As a lovely bonus, they had movie nights every Wednesday during wintertime, while I used to live in the neighbourhood - I hope they didn't stop with it! Super cute little coffee shop. It's on the small side but that's part of the charm. The staff was nice, the latte was solid (served with a small chocolate which was a nice touch and did improve the latte) and they serve food too, although I didn't try it. This place is very cute, and has good coffee but their pastries are good awful. We had the single worst lemon bar, one super dense flavorless "scone" (its borderline offensive calling what I was given a scone), and a mediocre coconut macaroon. Honestly the extremely and unnecessarily THICK layer of confectioners sugar on top of the lemon bar should have tipped me off but I took the risk anyway. I went to this friendly little deli this afternoon with my boyfriend and daughter. We each had a cold sandwich and they were amazing! Tucked out of the way on Cardero in a quaint residential neighbourhood, this little shop is easy to miss making it a hidden gem that caters to locals and is known, primarily, by word of mouth. There is no indoor seating but a couple of wooden benches under the awning will do for a quick sit down if you plan to stay a bit. That's what we did and we received smiles and nods from passing locals and one person exclaimed that our joyful munching was a perfect advertisement for the food. The bread was the freshest I've ever had at a restaurant, the ingredients flavourfully combined (I had The Lord Stanley - turkey, cheese, peppers and lemony, saucy goodness) and they were so big, they filled our bellies for the afternoon. Not bad for $7. As we had only popped in for sandwiches, I didn't have much time to check out the shelves for italian goodies, deli meats and cheeses or frozen dinner ideas but I'll be sure to go back for some serious gourmet shopping. Bonus - Cardero Bottega handles Mobio payments so I was able to use my iPhone to make an easy credit card purchase and, happily, this weekend they were having a promotion for Mobio users and I received a free $15 itunes card for using my iPhone. Hmmmmmmmm sandwiches! Why yes, try the made to order sandwiches. For $7.50 you will be stuffed with fresh bread, amazing deli meats, marinated peppers and some of the best cheese around. But the Bottega is more then just fantastic sandwiches. They have a great selection of deli goods like cured meats and imported cheeses, plus high quality canned and dried deli products. They carry fresh pastries, bread, pizza dough, and pasta as well. Personally I'd rather buy these items at an independent store than at Capers. Great selection of sweet and savory items. I got the croissant and it was delicious, and the croissant was warm as it just came out oven. They also have a great drink selection on top of coffee and tea. I tried the charcoal lemonade and it was delicious and not too sweet. read more

Cons: Very limited seating, it's quite small. That's the reason for 4, rather than 5, stars. A "How Are Ya," a wink, a smile and a quick like lightening yummy brie and ham sandwich prepared while I marveled at avocado oil chips and kettle popcorn. With bits of artisan groceries, some pastas (fresh tortellinis I want to try), an assortment of canned tomatoes, jars of pickles and the like, it feels like you've stepped into some quaint grocery store in a seaside town, certain to bump into a neighbour for a moment of friendly chit chat before ordering a few slices of deli meat and some cheese for the kids lunches. I LOVE this place and especially the owners. The West End should really be littered with stores, delis and cafes like this but alas...we apparently need more Starbucks and subpar shwarma. I digress. All their products are high quality, many from Italy or NYC (try the sausage!). I have never tried the paninis but apparently they are out of this world. If you're having a pizza night, walk in and ask for topping suggestions. Try something new, grab some nice oil or freshly baked breads and pasta. Its has a great community feel with the owner John often just chilling out on the patio drinking his morning coffee and welcoming guests of the botegga. Hes super nice. I'm a fan of this super cute, hidden and small gem in the middle of the West End. This is the cutest little coffee shop bottega I've seen around. If you weren't looking for it, you might miss it too. They serve a bunch of pastries, coffee and sandwiches, and sell a bunch of imported goods like jams and oils. The boyfriend and I came for lunch and had two paninis that were a good size and filling. We sat outside on the cute chairs and enjoyed the day. Watch out though - this place is small and just a few people in line can set the place back a bit. Three words: lemon pesto mayo. This is the content that raises their special prosciutto sandwich to a near-religious experience, but I can't help suspecting that I could spread it on a Ritz cracker and be almost as happy. Well okay, the beautiful cheese, delicious bread and super-fresh spinach may have something to do with it, too. Suffice it to say that I just walked half an hour in a state of near starvation rather than eat something else for lunch on a day that was going to land me in the West End. As for the café itself: it's very small, with not a lot of seating indoors. But it's very sweet, and full of tasty goodies. I was here about a year ago for the Reuben and it was amazing. Sorry to say but this is no longer the case. I will order the Reuben every time it is on a menu, half the time going to places just because they have it, I like to think of myself as someone that knows a great one when they taste it. Came in a few weeks ago excited to re-live my joy of how well done the Rueben was here, unfortunately they had run out of corn beef, not sure how you can let this happen on a weekend when you only have a handful of sandwiches on the menu and coffee. Anyways, my 30 minute trek for the sandwich did not work out and I opted for a coffee that was made perfectly. Decided to try again on my Reuben mission, I remember the sandwich being so good that I was willing to try again, I was in luck, they had corn beef thankfully!!! After a 15 minute wait the sandwich arrived, first thing, the bread, no marble rye? It was served on focaccia bread, for me the bread is one of the main things about the Reuben sandwich, the focaccia, as nice as it was, simply ruined the sandwich, it was just way to much bread and just didn't work. After the first bite I was slapped in the face with the overpowering taste of whole grain mustard, I love mustard but it was so over the top I couldn't finish half the sandwich. I was here with 5 other friends, all had order sandwiches and had a hard time getting past the amount of mustard of theirs also. Sad to say that i will not return, and neither will the friends I dragged along promising of a crazy good sandwich. Some said top 5 of my life, hahaha yeah right. read more

Nice location, cozy, tucked away in a residential neighbourhood. I want to love this little place but if I need Italian deli anything I'll go to Bosa or Granville Island. Even though I live a block away. It just doesn't do it for me - and the sad thing is is that I really, really want it to! The selection just isn't enough for me to frequent this place. If I'm going to get my Italian groceries I go somewhere where I can get it all at once, not just one or two specialty items. They do have deli sandwiches though but...if you've read my other reviews you likely know I have allergies. I once ordered a sandwich here, making sure I made a point of saying no peppers, and ensuring that the tapenade on it had no peppers... And the woman behind the counter failed to mention the obvious peppers in with the artichoke hearts! Delicious sandwich, I just wish I could have enjoyed the whole thing knowing I wasn't going to be sick afterwords. Maybe next time I go I'll have more luck. read more

Second guessing makes for bad bookkeeping. ----- I would never have found this place, had I not decided to run the opposite direction as fast as I could from an oncoming "Ghost of Girlfriend's Past" nightmare walking up the street. Glad I decided to conjure my inner deadbeat-awkward-sitcom-male instead of handling the situation like the grown woman I wish I was; 'Cause I found this place! Cute tiny coffee place tucked into residential territory. Ladies and Gents, I have found it: I haven to hide away from coffee shop hipsters and old people hogging the sugar! A place to drink coffee without being asked for spare change! I feel so devious and sneaky just thinking about it! My own little coffee shop hidden away in the decaying but charming houses of the West End! Staff are pleasant and attentive. Lots of home made goods. Chai latte made with fresh spices daily. Cafe has cute classic decor and attention to detail, very cosy and welcoming atmosphere, a couple of nice chairs/tables are set up outside. There are many reasons that Greenhorn is taking business from the Cardero Bodega the first of which is the slow, inept and less than knowledgable staff. Add to that the universally understood desire for a hot rather than cold Reuben delivered in a brown paper bag when I was sitting enjoying my tea in a mug and saucer at a table clearly intending to eat in. This while only one other customer was in the place. The fact that they sell Ernest Ice Cream when available is the only reason I will return. read more
