I am extremely disappointed with my experience ordering tamales from Cardenas this Christmas. I placed a large order--over $200 worth of tamales--expecting quality and consistency, especially for a holiday meal. Unfortunately, the tamales were 99% masa with barely any filling. This wasn't just one or two tamales -- the majority of the two dozen cheese and jalapeño tamales were like this. When you're feeding family during the holidays and spending that much money, this level of quality is unacceptable. I've shopped at Cardenas for years, but this experience has completely changed my trust in placing large orders here. Decent Hispanic market. The place is not that big, but have a bit of everything - meat, seafood, produce, alcohol, bakery, and hot food area with a few tables for dine-in. Overall, their prices are reasonable and they have self check-out. I usually come here for their produce and hot food (grilled) items. On 9/10/25 I bought a (pastel de mango cheesecake) when I got the cake I asked the lady in the bakery department does this cake have chocolate in it, she said no I asked her a second time are you sure? Because the birthday girl has an allergy to chocolate she reassured me and said no it's cheesecake. The sign in front of the cake also said cheesecake. When it was time to cut the cake to our surprise it was chocolate! Good thing we don't have the tradition to put the birthdays person face on the cake or it would have been so bad. I was so upset this cake was small, simple but it cost $30 I called the store and explained the whole situation to them and the lady with an attitude said, bring your cake and a receipt for a refund I explained to her I couldn't find the receipt but I had the tag they give you to pay for the cake. She got a bigger attitude and said without a receipt I can't do anything. I explained to her how far I lived and that we were in the middle of a celebration she had the nerve to say well bring it in your free time with a receipt. I can't believe this person is the one that takes care of their customers. The only thing I know is that I will never go back to Cardenas again, La Perla Tapatia is around the corner from them and they have better cakes, I should have gone there instead. Since we couldn't take it back because I couldn't find the receipt one person tried the cake, he said it was so dry and hard. Bottom line don't waste your time at this store there's so many in the area that we can go instead. The workers at this location have no professionalism they are rude, helpless employees. Most of the time there's only one cashier and you're almost force to do the self check out, to add to this they make you feel you did not pay for the items you had to check out yourself. I never thought I was gonna be writing this review cárdenas was a good store for me. Distance didn't matter when I wanted sweet bread or beef levers. Going there was always exciting the music, the employees, the food everything was perfect. I guess all good things have bad times and that's what's been happening lately but I kept thinking maybe things will get better... sadly I went Sunday with family and we ate there. We got 3 menudos and two burritos. The food came with certain jarrito drink and they didn't had any. So I stood there waiting for a long time until they figured out my drinks. My family started eating while I waited for someone to resolve the drink issue. I sat down and started eating and my menudo was disgusting! Bland and super extra mega greasy. You could see the grease on top of the broth. The burritos were not good either the meat didn't had flavor and although they were super burritos they were really small and were missing ingredients. I felt really sad because going to Cárdenas brought memories from when I was little and went to Meéxico... I've seen so many bad reviews it makes me sad. read more

Went in this morning to grab a grilled chicken family meal and the chicken was delicious. However the girl messed up my order and packed two refried beans and no rice. The beans were spoiled! They smelled so awful! I unfortunately had to throw them in the garbage. So all we had was chicken and tortillas which was a bit of a bummer. Not going to be buying anymore family meals since they have no issues selling their patrons spoiled food. I also tried the ribs and they were juicy but tasted as if they were boiled in water. Very odd seasonings. I had two ribs and my husband had one and was done because of the odd aftertaste it left in his pallet. Todays trip was a fail for the most part. I would like to start off by saying that this place was amazing. My experience in the past was really negative and unwelcoming. However, I just visited recently and what a big difference/change. The workers in La Cocina are soooo freaking rude. I say Good Morning in Spanish and they stare you down and want you to hurry up and order. I understand if it's busy but there was nobody behind me. I dread coming here, but they have decent tortillas. That's all I buy here because one time I bought a bag of potatoes and once I got home I finally figured where the rotten smell was coming from. It was indeed the bag of potatoes. I returned them, so I just stick to buying the tortillas. Also why are the lines always so long? After I tell her she licks her fingers to get the bag open where she's going to put my food! I told her that what she did is not appropriate in the food counter, she apologized and asked me if I wanted another bag and I said "of course I do!" She then started to apologize saying that it's very hard for her to get the bags open so that's why she licked her fingers and she realized what she did because I mentioned it. We have been eating at the inside market restaurant a few times lately they have been making up prices for the kind of burrito my wife asks for no meat just rice beans and sour cream and cheese today I go in and they charged me a super burrito price for the no meat burrito when I asked why they tell me it's because I ordered sour cream that's why always paid less for hers and today they pull this watch your receipt when u pay they are always adding extra without you even knowing until it's to late you already paid and when you confront them about it they take your receipt and show the (manager ) they don't hand back your receipt! read more

Was trying to say I didn't pay for my pan dulce and that they have different prices then she brought up a Bolio with queso that I had that it's a different price. I told her to put the price in there for me because I already paid for my items and my bread that machine asked me to input she wanted me to go get another pan dulce and come pay again for the Bolio I told her no I don't want another bread and come and pay twice she made a scene having everyone stare at us so I then spoke loudly to her to put the price of the Bolio and il pay again she's lucky I didn't throw the whole bag of bread at her face and told her to enjoy it on her break I don't recommend anyone coming here since security over here apparently likes fighting for pan dulce y bolios she doesn't get enough action apparently. Less than one star if possible. I went into the store on 4/28 to place a taquiza order for 25 people at 4:30 for the following day. The website states ONE HOUR notice is needed. I gave them much more. The ladies behind the counter could not figure out what I was talking about or what to charge me. They called a manager on the phone. I spoke to her and let her know what I wanted. The lady that was helping me went back to the back and never came back. A new lady went and called Jorge. Who then called someone else. He finally rang me up $205 at 5:11pm almost 45 minutes of waiting around for them to figure their own menu out. I was to pick it up the next morning at 11am. I showed up and no one had any idea what I was talking about and no order was prepared. I showed them the receipt and they still had no idea. They got on the phone to call someone else. It's now 11:30am half an hour after I was supposed to just show up and pick it up. And I still have not been told where my order is. This is absolutely terrible service. Not only is the staff not trained correctly, the communication among their shifts is a joke. If you are planning an event you're already stressed. Do yourself a favor and don't it make more stressful by ordering from these people. UPDATE: The ladies scrambled to get the order ready. It was ready at 11:45am. Never again will I shop at Cardenas first I ordered 7lbs of boneless chicken thighs as she was pulling the meat some looked pale. so when I got it I looked closer and some pieces of chicken were grey and spoiled hidden with other fresh chicken. I took it back to the meat department and explained why I didn't want it. So I got some produce instead and after picking through all the bad produce to find the fresh stuff because I had no other choice but to shop there because it was closest to me. I was home chopping the cilantro and there was a big black bug I accidentally chopped in half. I know cilantro comes out the ground but I've never had this problem. Having recently visited their location in Tracy, I wanted to see what the Modesto-area store offered. Being a chain of some sort, I didn't expect major differences. However, when I searched for this location, I noticed that another Modesto-area store had been closed. Considering the size of Modesto, it seemed a curious change. When I arrived at Crows Landing Road, it became obvious--there are blocks of Mexican-related businesses. For me, this location seemed less interesting than the store in Tracy. The prices (the same at both locations, as far as I could see) seemed reasonable in an absence of other stores there, but that wasn't the case here. Competition was strong. Maybe, it was me, but the store didn't feel nearly as clean as the store in Tracy, unfortunately. They also had a security guard I saw, as soon as I entered the building. I didn't feel more secure. The only thing that was really positive was that I found the larger bottles of Jarritos. Going to this location might be better than the Tracy location simply because there are alternate stores in the area, so if they're missing something, hopefully, someone else will have it. read more

This place is a shame. Has gone downhill terribly. The store is overpriced and it basically depends on their heavily Hispanic demographic to continue to stay in business. Their weekly "sales" seem to always run out very fast and even heard from one of their butchers that it's just a bait and hook technique saying they will hold product in the back till it goes back to regular price. Idk if this is true but I've "missed" out on multiple "sales" They don't honor their advertised sales. The quality of Meat is poor. Their produce is just sad. I've tried giving this place more than one chance but unfortunately they fail over and over again.
