Was working in the area and decided to finally stop in and have lunch. My intention was to go with a deli sandwich but after hearing the weekly special I opted for the 4 hr smoke short rib the was braised and shredded on a fresh brioche bun topped with a spicy slaw. For the side I ordered a summer salad (watermelon, blueberries & mint leaves). OMG delicious. Everything was fresh, hot and great. I will definitely be back for lunch here again. The meat selection looked amazing to. Have my eye on a Dry Aged Porterhouse $24.99/lb read more

First of all, this place is always closed on my days off (Sundays and Mondays). I finally made it in and tried their aged beef burger and was not disappointed. The burger was so thick and juicy and cooked a perfect medium. The beef is cut and aged in-house. Every menu item is fresh and made in-house as well. I also purchased a free-range chicken breast marinated in lemon and rosemary for Easter, and it was the most delicious piece of chicken I've ever tasted. It was tender and juicy. I'm not wasting any time giving this spot its due praise.  If you aren't in need of full table service and a nice little quiet ambience or whatever this is your spot.  You order at the counter and luckily when I came it wasn't too busy.  Most customers seem to be grabbing butcher options to-go.  The lunch order came out quick and there was ample seating to quickly eat a weekday lunch. But 5 the star rating because of the pastrami sandwich.  Salt bomb, check, crispy fried bread, check, crispy parts of pastrami, check, gooey cheesy cabbage, check, and yes a little greasy but delicious.  The coleslaw was crunchy and lightly dressed with apple strands and peppers and all kinds of stuff. I'll be back to try more soon! read more

Underwhelming. See pictures. 14$ French dip 15$ hot pastrami 10$ grilled cheese 80$ later food for 4 people and I still had to make dinner This was honestly Carl's Jr quality I drove 12 Miles out of my way to get the ruebin according to their flyer and Facebook. They didn't know about it and said try again next week. They did comp me a fry. This is why it's a 2 Star and not 1. The staff was friendly and apologized, service was fine. I don't blame them. Just the product and management. I won't be back. I'm surprised by the hype of this place honestly. I was going to get meat but it was double what I normally pay for the same thing so I skipped it. read more

The cubano was ok, definitely missing something, but I just can not put my finger on it, for sure was a little dry, in my opinion. Potato salad was also lacking unfortunately. But the hot pastrami sandwich was pretty good. Great beer choices and staff was very kind. read more

Medical visits in the area have taken me deeper into Modesto than I typically go. I cruised by the Village Butcher twice, noting it each time. The third time was the charm because my visit was late enough this time to stop in for lunch. The meat was beautiful! We weren't there for that, but I really wanted to buy the sausageI wanted to grab a dry-aged steak to grill. The potsticker sausage kept calling me in particular. I imagine it has all the things in it that make potstickers addictive, but more versatility. Hmmm... We opted to try all cold sandwiches. The chicken salad (with celery, green apple, and red grapes on sourdough), the roast beef (horseradish sauce, pickles, and cheddar on an Italian roll), and the club (the usual with white cheddar and herb aioli). All three were delish. I personally could have done without the pickles or the aioli, but my dining companion really loved both. It took a minute, but they were worth the wait. While I was whiling away the minutes, I saw two of the Santa Maria Trip Tip come out and I had some real sandwich envy. If we had bee dining in versus doing takeout, that would have been the way to go for sure. We had iced tea, but the selection of local beers was really tempting. On a weekend, that would definitely be the way to go. They also offer something you don't ofter see in the store anymore, specifically fresh rendered lard & beef tallow. They were both in the cold case, which to me means super fresh. If those aren't your speed, there also fresh beef broth/stock. And, if red meat is out of the question, they have some great bbq sauces and homemade pickles. They also offer a few other things, like a butcher's box program (a monthly subscription box that features a variety of products from the shop that highlights local and seasonal specials at a discount), take out, and dog food. All great options for busy people. Something else to note, they seemed to know almost all the customers who popped in while I was there. Nice! The BBQ sauces and seafood/meat options intrigued me, so I think I will bring a cooler next time I am in the area and provision up. On the practical side, the shop is clean and bright. the staff is friendly, and its easy both to find an to park. It's not cheap, but you can visibly see the quality. Did I mention the meat was beautiful? Definitely pay them a visit if you like clean, fresh food and a place that seems to be a neighborhood staple. It seems like a slice of foodie heaven. Highly Recommended. read more

This place is expensive but it's worth it. The staff here is very chill, and they are knowledgeable. There is a sandwich shop and the aesthetic/ ambiance is great. They offer frozen dog food as well. You can find a few small local items in the fridges by check out. read more

TASTY OR WASTEY? Not too sure!!! Came to McHenry village for a nice walk. Stopped by Phillips lighting, just to admire all the gorgeous fixtures....and, to say, hello, to Rosa. Decided to try this place for dinner. I've tried bbq from here, to Texas, STL....to me, it was a bit tasteless. Bbq sauce was not spicy, at all. The garlic fries and ranch dressing were great. Very clean place. Great customer service. I would recommend. read more

I really wanted to love this place so I waited to review until my second visit. The inside of this place is small but enough chairs and tables for the amount of people that go to dine in, at least when I visited. Vibe in there was pretty chill, i think even quiet. The food is just okay and you don't get much meat on the sandwiches. The spicy sauce was NOT spicy. I walked in 30 min to closing and felt rushed to order, but I get it. They were closing soon, it was my first visit and I didn't know what to order. The food was okay but I thought maybe because they were closing soon and the food was out for a while maybe, not sure. They had ran out of the tri trip so I decided to make sure and visit again. Today I went in during lunch hours .. around 12 pm, service was good and not much of a wait. I ordered tri trip sandwich with one spicy bbq sauce and one regular bbq sauce and potato salad. Tri trip was tender, not much flavor to the meat but texture was great. Potato salad I would definitely pass on if I go back, not much seasoning to it and when I think of them I think of cold bland potatoes. Surprisingly the spicy sauce was spicy this time! Lol I think maybe they were labeled incorrectly when I dined in the first time. Love that they get their meats and most of the other things locally, not sure if I would go back. read more

EXCELLENT quality meat and food here. Grab some lunch while getting your freshly butchered meat packaged up for dinner. The Tri-tip sandwich with parmesan garlic fries is AWESOME. Fries are fried in tallow making it healthier and tastier and crisper than any fries you will find in Modesto. Service is excellent with helpful and kind staff. BBQ sauce is house made and ends up being my beverage of choice. Love this place. Good music playing too. read more

HAVE AGAIN: The brisket is excellent - just delicious. Best to just have the brisket without the sandwich. Sure wish they had a combo plate: brisket, pulled pork, baked beans, etc.! Hey! The baked beans today were outstanding. NOT HAVE AGAIN: The brisket sandwich had way too much fat and I had to open it up to trim out the fat. tossed out half the bun and then had a decent size sandwich. read more

Underwhelming ........ I'm so disappointed. I've been following The Village Butcher Facebook and was really excited to try this place as their posts looked amazing. First of all it was almost $50 for lunch This did NOT include any sides or refillable drinks. We ordered a tri-tip, brisket, and pulled pork sandwich. They were so dry and lacked any flavor. We had to pour the BBQ sauce all over it just to swallow it. The rolls were basic. I will say that the meat in the butcher case looked like high quality meat that's why I gave it 2 st read more

If I could leave a no star review I would. My wife places an order for Christmas, the weekend of Thanksgiving. They asked us if we wanted our order frozen. Due to placing our order in advance we agreed. Three weeks later, no call. I called and left a voicemail. No call back was given. My wife had to call two more times and both times the associate seemed like they had no explanation for not getting our order (even though my wife was told my a woman that she was able to locate our order on the butcher's wall). Due me my wife's good nature she waited for our order (which we could not pick up until today). Which is 2 days before Christmas. Horrible service. So disappointed by the lack of customer service or responsibility for their inaction. read more

The only fresher and better cuts of meat have come from other local farms. I think a lot of the negative reviews are because people forget this place is a local butcher first and Togos second. Yeah, lunch for 2 is 30 bucks these days. Keep in mind I've only bought cuts of meat and their dog food/treat offerings which my dog eats like a meth-head is trying to steal it from her. Their cuts of meat, prices, service, worker attentiveness and obvious knowledge (you can speak directly to the butchers) are top-notch. But what the heck do I know I'm just huge, old, legit worked as a Chef in NY restaurants, and love meat kind guy what can I say. read more

First off when a customer walks through the door all shop talk needs to stop and the customer needs to be acknowledged. Took a bit for someone to say hello. After the lady with the black hair stopped talking, she treated me as if I was inconveniencing her. Her personality was very abrupt and rude! I asked her if cheese comes on the sandwich and she flat said NO (end of sentence). She didn't follow up with that they offer it but charge extra. I had to ask if I could get cheese? Her demeanor this whole time was very off putting and I really should have just walked out. She rang up the order and didn't ask if I wanted anything to drink. I had to ask her. Everyone else I had interacted with treated me professionally. What's disappointing is that I really enjoyed the food. Even though they charged me 1.50 for cheese and didn't put it on. I will likely never go back for the way I was treated. read more

Took the reviewers advice and not disappointed. Got super tender and flavorful tri tip sandwiches with house made coleslaw served in jam jars (nice touch!). Spotted dry aged osso buco and picked up 3 for father's day dinner. Ease dropping I learned that you can call in to reserve your cuts for the weekend- the meat case was a little picked over at 2pm on Saturday, but still some nice looking meats. Just don't think you could feed 10 with a single type of cut this late in day. New space, super clean, well lit, nice service and knowledgeable propieter. read more

No negative criticism but room for improvement, after ordering the Cubano Sandwich with a side of garlic fries, my sandwich tastes like "the big marker" you know the one that smells like it would taste. The stinky one. Well my dinner ended up with home made nachos for me. My wife had the Caesar salad with a taste of cardboard box. But we both loved the try tip sandwich. . The aïoli was not too pleasant with taste of Rosemary. Garlic fries are super good! Please do something about the taste of the cubano sandwich. read more

Positives: Very clean inside. Super friendly service. Food came out fairly quickly which was awesome. My GF enjoyed her club sandwich. Negatives: I ordered the chop brisket sandwich. Very little brisket on the sandwich. The brisket that was on the sandwich was very cold not even a bit warm. The roll it came on was hard & way too thick to comparison of the lack of meat! Very small side of bbq sauce. Overall: Our first experience was 50/50. I'm going to give them another try. Their Q sauce is tomato based which is fine but not a lot of flavor to it. I'd recommend giving them a try out. I think I might have caught them on an off day. To be fair my judgement does come from Texas & Missouri BBQ experiences. Also be ready for some high prices. Example: the brisket sandwich was $16. read more

Very disappointed in this establishment. Placed an hour for their weekly meal specials- a half chicken with red potatoes. When I called to place the order the guy asked what side I wanted- so I said a Cesar salad. Well we go to pick it up and my order was incorrect and wasn't supposed to come with a Cesar salad. Fine, so we get the right order and come back home. The half chicken was overly seasoned and undercooked. read more

Been coming here for a couple of years I love their Pork chops and their meat is always fresh and they have great prices.

This place is delicious. They have awesome cuts of meats and flavors. We love to do lunch here. Tri tip sandwich or grilled cheese with brisket added is delicious. Potatoe salad is different but yummy! If you're coming for lunch I would definitely call and order ahead because it gets pretty busy. They also do a monthly meat box which seems like a good deal. The reason for the four stars is it is a little pricey even for lunch but totally worth it. Everyone is very friendly and 100% customer service. They also have a few local beers you can choose from or wine read more

They were friendly and helpful with picking out our meat. Loved their sausage and pork chops. What a difference. However, they are a little pricey compared to other meat markets/butchers. I'd give it more stars but I use a walker or sometimes a cane, so having help out to the car is paramount and they always have to be asked. Unfortunately most of the time they're too busy with taking phone calls to be bothered. The other places I've gone to insist that they help me to the car with my package regardless of how much I've spent. read more
