Underwhelming. See pictures. 14$ French dip 15$ hot pastrami 10$ grilled cheese 80$ later food for 4 people and I still had to make dinner This was honestly Carl's Jr quality I drove 12 Miles out of my way to get the ruebin according to their flyer and Facebook. They didn't know about it and said try again next week. They did comp me a fry. This is why it's a 2 Star and not 1. The staff was friendly and apologized, service was fine. I don't blame them. Just the product and management. I won't be back. I'm surprised by the hype of this place honestly. I was going to get meat but it was double what I normally pay for the same thing so I skipped it.

I'm not wasting any time giving this spot its due praise.  If you aren't in need of full table service and a nice little quiet ambience or whatever this is your spot.  You order at the counter and luckily when I came it wasn't too busy.  Most customers seem to be grabbing butcher options to-go.  The lunch order came out quick and there was ample seating to quickly eat a weekday lunch. But 5 the star rating because of the pastrami sandwich.  Salt bomb, check, crispy fried bread, check, crispy parts of pastrami, check, gooey cheesy cabbage, check, and yes a little greasy but delicious.  The coleslaw was crunchy and lightly dressed with apple strands and peppers and all kinds of stuff. I'll be back to try more soon!

The cubano was ok, definitely missing something, but I just can not put my finger on it, for sure was a little dry, in my opinion. Potato salad was also lacking unfortunately. But the hot pastrami sandwich was pretty good. Great beer choices and staff was very kind.

French Dip - Dry beef and grease to dip sandwich in, not Au jus! Gross!

Not happy with order at all! Grease for Au jus and beef more like jerky. Heard the food was delicious but not this thing. Had to order something else for lunch.

Medical visits in the area have taken me deeper into Modesto than I typically go. I cruised by the Village Butcher twice, noting it each time. The third time was the charm because my visit was late enough this time to stop in for lunch. The meat was beautiful! We weren't there for that, but I really wanted to buy the sausageI wanted to grab a dry-aged steak to grill. The potsticker sausage kept calling me in particular. I imagine it has all the things in it that make potstickers addictive, but more versatility. Hmmm... We opted to try all cold sandwiches. The chicken salad (with celery, green apple, and red grapes on sourdough), the roast beef (horseradish sauce, pickles, and cheddar on an Italian roll), and the club (the usual with white cheddar and herb aioli). All three were delish. I personally could have done without the pickles or the aioli, but my dining companion really loved both. It took a minute, but they were worth the wait. While I was whiling away the minutes, I saw two of the Santa Maria Trip Tip come out and I had some real sandwich envy. If we had bee dining in versus doing takeout, that would have been the way to go for sure. We had iced tea, but the selection of local beers was really tempting. On a weekend, that would definitely be the way to go. They also offer something you don't ofter see in the store anymore, specifically fresh rendered lard & beef tallow. They were both in the cold case, which to me means super fresh. If those aren't your speed, there also fresh beef broth/stock. And, if red meat is out of the question, they have some great bbq sauces and homemade pickles. They also offer a few other things, like a butcher's box program (a monthly subscription box that features a variety of products from the shop that highlights local and seasonal specials at a discount), take out, and dog food. All great options for busy people. Something else to note, they seemed to know almost all the customers who popped in while I was there. Nice! The BBQ sauces and seafood/meat options intrigued me, so I think I will bring a cooler next time I am in the area and provision up. On the practical side, the shop is clean and bright. the staff is friendly, and its easy both to find an to park. It's not cheap, but you can visibly see the quality. Did I mention the meat was beautiful? Definitely pay them a visit if you like clean, fresh food and a place that seems to be a neighborhood staple. It seems like a slice of foodie heaven. Highly Recommended.

I really wanted to love this place so I waited to review until my second visit. The inside of this place is small but enough chairs and tables for the amount of people that go to dine in, at least when I visited. Vibe in there was pretty chill, i think even quiet. The food is just okay and you don't get much meat on the sandwiches. The spicy sauce was NOT spicy. I walked in 30 min to closing and felt rushed to order, but I get it. They were closing soon, it was my first visit and I didn't know what to order. The food was okay but I thought maybe because they were closing soon and the food was out for a while maybe, not sure. They had ran out of the tri trip so I decided to make sure and visit again. Today I went in during lunch hours .. around 12 pm, service was good and not much of a wait. I ordered tri trip sandwich with one spicy bbq sauce and one regular bbq sauce and potato salad. Tri trip was tender, not much flavor to the meat but texture was great. Potato salad I would definitely pass on if I go back, not much seasoning to it and when I think of them I think of cold bland potatoes. Surprisingly the spicy sauce was spicy this time! Lol I think maybe they were labeled incorrectly when I dined in the first time. Love that they get their meats and most of the other things locally, not sure if I would go back.

TASTY OR WASTEY? Not too sure!!! Came to McHenry village for a nice walk. Stopped by Phillips lighting, just to admire all the gorgeous fixtures....and, to say, hello, to Rosa. Decided to try this place for dinner. I've tried bbq from here, to Texas, STL....to me, it was a bit tasteless. Bbq sauce was not spicy, at all. The garlic fries and ranch dressing were great. Very clean place. Great customer service. I would recommend.

EXCELLENT quality meat and food here. Grab some lunch while getting your freshly butchered meat packaged up for dinner. The Tri-tip sandwich with parmesan garlic fries is AWESOME. Fries are fried in tallow making it healthier and tastier and crisper than any fries you will find in Modesto. Service is excellent with helpful and kind staff. BBQ sauce is house made and ends up being my beverage of choice. Love this place. Good music playing too.

OMG the tri-tip sandwiches, get it and thank me later :) It takes a bit, but it's worth the wait. In the meantime just shop, they have meats, prepared items, milk, etc... I follow their Instagram, they share updates on what they have in stock, classes, specials, etc. (I'll have to try more items and update this review)

Underwhelming ........ I'm so disappointed. I've been following The Village Butcher Facebook and was really excited to try this place as their posts looked amazing. First of all it was almost $50 for lunch This did NOT include any sides or refillable drinks. We ordered a tri-tip, brisket, and pulled pork sandwich. They were so dry and lacked any flavor. We had to pour the BBQ sauce all over it just to swallow it. The rolls were basic. I will say that the meat in the butcher case looked like high quality meat that's why I gave it 2 st

We did come in 10 mins before they were closing, we thought we could still grab some tri tip sandwiches. We walked in and the son said with a sigh and attitude, Hi How can we help you? We ask for the sandwiches to which he sighs again and says Sure! Sarcastically. He checks the cooler then slams that shut. Then the other employee asks what we wanted and he says loud enough for us to hear, just two sandwiches! And the other one responds "I just put that away." Then he says that's usually how it goes!! He comes back out and they're making little comments to each other. We wait maybe 5 minutes and it's ready which is great. Until the other kid dropped the paper bag on the counter and says here you go! With a sarcastic voice and smile. I never want to be a Karen but this was some of the worst customer service I have ever received. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone especially for just two half way decent tri tip sandwich for $38. I asked my favorite llm where I should stop by for prime rib going from Fresno to SF. It at first suggested I make a bee like for house of prime rib in sf, which I like but have been to many times. It then suggested house of beef and I'm so glad it did (cattleman's in Livermore was also a 3rd choice but I've been there several times too). Thankfully it was Fri eve and they had prime rib. I like mine rare and it was perfectly cooked, very marbled, huge, well seasoned and delicious. I pared it wth au jus and mashed with gravy. Then, what reminded me to write this review, was the tri tip from the meat counter and took to go. They were nice enough to pack it in ice for my 2 hour drive. I just cooked it on my grill in the rain and this is seriously one of the best tri tips I've ever grilled up. The meat tenderness/marbling/quality is on par with any prime grade/American wagyu I've bought and the seasoning is just super on point. Looking forward to smoking the baby back ribs I picked up as well in the next couple of days but I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area. Seems like other reviews had issue with service but the staff were exceptionally attentive when I was there. Seriously the only thing that wasn't top notch about my experience was the cocktails(mine was totally fine but I'm a bit spoiled when I'm in SF) but for my purposes passing through I just wanted the prime rib and meats to go to be delicious and house of beef certainly lived up to its name!

Service is fast and attentive, staff is apologetic about the wait, but the waiting time was not too late or rushed. Our server 10/10 service, even gave us extra bread to take home. Salad and soup bar were excellent and everything tasted fresh. We loved the tomato soup, but didn't like the french onion dip soup. The bread was amazing, and even tasted great as reheated leftovers. The prime rib and ribeye steak were cooked perfectly to our order, but couldnt finish eating dud to being full from the unlimited bread, salad and soup bar. Garlic fries were amazing and crispy, even after reheated for leftovers. Only a few things I didn't like was when we went to get our soup and salad, they cleared the whole table. I was warming up the butter in my hands for the bread to spread on faster, but they took it away like trash when we went to grab our salad and soups. They resetted the paper towel rolls to the side of the table when we moved it to the center, and they almost took away my husband's alcoholic drink, and then realized we were still dining. The lighting was definitely way too dark. I could see elderly people slipping if there was were liquids or food filled on the floor. The space is interestingly very small for a steak restaurant, but they seem to make everything flow well. Definitely would come again, enjoy the soup and salad bar, and then maybe share a steak instead of ordering two.
