Every time I come here , I think to myself: "Why don't I come here more often?". I love to peruse a the vast array of fascinating ingredients, prepared food, nuts, teas, olives, etc.etc.etc., with aromas of far off lands. I have spent a lot of time in Greece, and some time traveling around the Balkans, Turkey and the Near East. Mediterranean cuisine is a favorites of mine in all of it's variations. There is nothing more delectable than dolma warm or cold, it's not just stuffed grape leaves. (Dolma is a family of stuffed vegetable dishes common in the Mediterranean cuisine and surrounding regions including the Balkans, the Caucasus, Russia, Central Asia and Middle East. Common vegetables to stuff include tomato, pepper, onion, zucchini, eggplant, and garlic. Meat dolmas are generally served warm, often with tahini or egg-lemon sauce. ) Needless to say all of the spices and most of the other ingredients are to be found here, and Caravan like its name is a wondrous journey and destination, at least I think so. read more

I love this market. It's a treasure chest waiting for the treasure hunt! I love cultures and different foods, products and other goodies to try. If you're in the mood to dig and look at every little shelf then this is the place to come. They have a Mediterranean candies (that a friend turned me onto with pistachios that I saw in the market in California) where It's some kind of light white taffy made with sugar and rosewater with pistachios. This place actually has a baklava type pinwheel candy of the same kind. Absolutely heavenly and amazing. They also have a large selection of teas, fresh herbs and vegetables, tons of olives that are locally made, nuts and seeds of all kinds sold in bulk, and even lavash made locally. And of course there's the baked baklava and other bread. A lot of the local people come and get into some heated discussions in here. It's rather fun for me. I actually found that some of the customers came from many different middle eastern countries as I got into a few discussions myself wellI'm glad I didn't walk out with a bigger bill, but I certainly lucked out with the desire to come back and dig some more! Nobody beats the wonderful Arabic Coffee Beans behind the counter at $5.99 a pound. Buy whole or let them freshly grind the black roasted beans with the natural oils making them glisten. I use a pour over so I have them do a fine powder Turkish or Espresso grind. The Turkish and eastern European individually wrapped chocolate candies at $6.99 a pound are little unexpected culinary treasures. Love shopping here especially for bulk nuts, snacks, and dried fruit. They have a huge selection; my particular favorites are the Persian pistachios and the fruit and nut mix with like a dozen different things in it, including dried mulberries and toasted chickpeas. They also have a really great tea selection, including the full lines of Twining's and Ahmad's brands which may be more familiar to U.S. shoppers. Of course they also have all your other staples: pasta (really good!), grains, legumes, frozen foods, sweets, spices, halal meat, produce (unique options like asian eggplants and cute little apples and pears), lots of dairy (cheeses, yogurt, kefir, etc.), bulk olives, coffee, jarred spreads and sauces like ajvar and various pickles, good selection of imported chocolates. read more

We find many things that aren't available easily elsewhere, for example ground local goat, lamb and beef burgers, and double creme feta. Not a place to shop for produce, although there is some. When I lived in London I was introduced to Indian food, and I developed some favorites. One of these favorites is a condiment, and the best brand of this condiment I've found is Patak's. I called Caravan this morning and I was told they had the medium version and the hot. I was a little skeptical but I braved the heat and the traffic to check it out. I came here while visiting family in Tucson. We were looking for spices and supples to make some Arabic family recipes. The olive oil selection was pretty good and bulk spices were a great price. The pita appeared to be made commercially somewhere else but they did have injera and large thin pita that looked fresh/locally baked. Okay...check this out. So Caravan, as a neighborhood Middle Eastern market, is awesome. They have stuff for all types of Mediterranean cuisine, items you really cant find in most shops across Tucson. Wait, there is this Middle Eastern market on Broadway (what's it called?) that has bomb stuff but Caravan is closer to my house so...there's that. What I'm getting at here is that the kids at Caravan have taken over the old El Taco (which is now a food truck) right next door and made it into an eatery-slash-bakery called Za'atar. They still have the old El Taco signage up but trust me here, it has been converted into some badass Middle Eastern realness. Yo, my chicken kabob platter was so juicy and flavorful with fresh pickled beets, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and lemons. It also came with hummus and this, oh man!, this lemony garlicky "spread", kinda like a hummus, that was so mad delicious I think I'm gonna ask if I can buy it by the barrel and then put it in the tub and soak in it. What is that stuff? Next time I go in I've gotta ask and try and get the recipe. My wife's gyro was great too. Everything was great. But one thing, one thing! is a standout in my opinion. The bread. The mutha fxxkin BREAD. At Za'atar they have a wood fire brick oven and they bake this oblong toasty soft tasty amazingness that, literally, puts most loaves to shame. I go just to buy the bread (2 for a dollar) and its good for not only Mediterranean fare, but I've used it for meatball subs, veggie "wraps", breakfast sandwiches and so forth and all of them have paired perfectly. Trust me on this: go for the food, stay for the bread. Does that make sense? No. Again: Caravan = awesome. Za'atar = double awesome. But I may want to suggest changing the El Taco marquee to Za'atar because folks may just keep driving thinking it's still a closed down taco joint. Because people need to know about this place. This place is unreal. Absolutely the best spot in town for feta cheese (about 4 -5 varieties from all over the world), olives (fantastic prices), nuts and dried fruit. Also. several varieties of the most delicious fresh Middle Eastern breads. Yum! Call ahead and find out which day(s) of the week that the meat man is in the back of this small store cutting up a dozen or so whole fresh lambs that are hanging in the big walk-in refrigerator. Then go to the store on that day (and time) and tell him that you want some lamb neck for making a French "collet d'agneau (or "collier d'agneau") stew and some lamb riblets for barbecuing or whatnot and stand next to him while he cuts it up. Not particularly cheap, but who else in Tucson has entire lambs and will cut them to order? It's like being in a Mideastern bazaar! I'd sure love to get a whole lamb to cook on a spit-turned roaster! I've been shopping here for years and always find some new treasure to take home and sample. My latest find: fabulous jam from Armenia. Not cheap, but oh so fine! And the first ingredient is fruit not sugar! Don't tell anyone, but they have the freshest Jordan Almonds in Tucson. I don't always feed my habit, but when I do, I choose the colored Jordan Almonds rather than the plain white ones! I've, sadly for my waistline, discovered another wicked sweet .. they have these small cellophane wrapped candies which have pistachio in kind of a white nougat. Sinfully good. They have a wide variety of fresh spices .. including Aleppo Pepper .. one of my favorites and it is considerably less expensive than at Penzey's Spices. They also have the yummy fennel candies from India that you have after a meal to clear your pallet. If you need Patak's chutneys they have plenty of those too. It is a great shop to explore and you will find something new to savor. read more

"Let me park my Camel..." In the next parking lot over in El Taco so I can experience the shopping experience of an Asian/Middle Eastern Market. My Camel by the way is a Toyota Corolla. Nope, it wasn't like the latest Sex In The City movie where I did ride up on a real camel in the sweltering Tucson heat. So I guess there's not much to look forward in this review beyond this point. But hey, I made ya look! Parking is not cool at this place so I had to park at El Taco. It is a small grocery, but crowded with a few crown goodies. My favorite part of this place is the produce. They have a small produce area and the tomatoes win this hands down. They have these huge tomatoes, that don't rot in your fridge! I don't know where they got them from!!!! But if you are looking for decent tomatoes, its definitely worth the visit to Caravan Mideastern Foods. Other than that, I have nothing more to say. Maybe next time I will leave with a Persian Prince, but Danish will do too. read more

This is an ideal place for me to shop for food and spices. You can buy spices in bulk so you get a chance to at least smell what you are buying. The store is small and cramped but clean and pleasant. They also have bread, snacks and Arabic candy - super cool. I want to go back. You are kind of on your own as there was no one there to advise me on spices. If you like middle eastern, or Greek, or Turkish, or Indian, or Persian, or Armenian, or - heck, you get the point - cuisine, you will think you've died and gone to heaven at Caravan. It's small. It's cramped. It's also the most amazing place in town. Better than 17th Street before Lee Lee's opened. Let's go on a tour! You enter and pass a rack with more varieties of flatbread than most people can think of: pocket pita, lavosh, greek pita, white, wheat, whatever. That's on your left. On your right, the cash registers are surrounded by more Milka chocolate bars than you've seen since the last time you were in Europe, plus Jordan almonds, halvah, baklava and other phyllo-syrupy treats and beautiful coffee and tea sets. Continue straight back, on your left are the freezer cases with halal lamb, beef and goat, then the refrigerator cases with four kinds of feta and gorgeous yogurts. This is followed by the bulk section - with five or six varieties of olives - from kalamata to oil-cured - and an equal variety of dates. They have other dried fruits, as well - currents, figs, apricots. Nom! Now you're near the produce and fresh herb section, where huge bunches of fresh dill, parsley and mint are always super cheap and they have a limited but fresh selection of veggies and fruits. I wait impatiently every year for July, when they get the most amazing green and brown fresh figs. The dried spices are here, too - and it is more than you could ever dream of: mixes for shawerma and kafta, sumac, cumin, dried lemons, you name it. Next, on to the Indian foods section - with what looks like the entire catalog of Patak's foods - curry pastes, chutneys, spice mixes. Then the condiments - everything from red pepper purée to pickled turnips to grape leaves. Next to this is the cookie/dessert section - with lots of Oetker products. If you turn around and go past the large canned bean and tahini shelf, you head into the second half of the store. First there is the freezer section - with borek, and phyllo (#4 & #10!!), and lots of frozen treats like spanakopita and gyro meat. And more refrigerator cases with wonderful imported juices - sour cherry is my favorite! There is an entire wall filled with dried grains and legumes: bulgur wheat in three sizes, every kind of dal you have ever seen, dried garbanzos and other beans. Keep going - there's more. The last little area of the store has bulk snacks - roasted and salted nuts and seeds. They have these chili lime roasted pistachios that are like snack crack. Be sure to get some. The nut section is surrounded by more sweets - gorgeous cookies and pastries all smiling at you from their shiny plastic containers. If you like Middle Eastern sweets, be sure to go during Ramadan. The dessert section is stuffed to the gills with special delicacies for the season. The last room has an entire wall of tea, along with huge bags of rice, prayer rugs and other things for religious needs. There are easily fifty kinds of regular and herbal teas. I'm pretty sure they have the entire Twinings line. Heading back to the register, you have on your right the general store section. They have pots, kettles, more fancy tea sets, falafel scoops, maamoul cookie molds - you name it. I've been getting my Middle Eastern goods at an incredibly reasonable price at Caravan for the last fifteen years. The men who work there are very nice, and happy to answer any questions. The owner is very nice, and is always there. You can even get green coffee beans to roast yourself, it's at the counter along with the fancy bulk rice. Google your favorite middle eastern food for the recipe, and take your shopping list. They'll be happy to help you fill it. And you'll be happy to have supported an outstanding small local business. This place is a total gem. Easily missed, as it's located in a tiny trip mall on Countryclub, but keep your eyes peeled for it! It's not to be missed. You'll find a mix of MIddle Eastern, turkish, Indian, Persian and Greek goods. I probably didn't quite list all of the countries they get product from, but I think you get the point. I learned about Caravan through my aunt, who is a true foodie at heart- always scouring for the best! It's all about the olive selection and the Feta cheese here. At least that's what I thought until I went there. And YES the olive selection is awesome- look for the giant white bins, and the imported Feta cheese is the by far the best I've ever had. It comes in a tin and it's so fresh and creamy. On my hunt for olives and cheese I discovered all of the other amazing products piled into this place. From spices and teas to special flour, candy, pita, curry pastes, purees, fresh juices, etc. it's truly a global affair. If you love global flavors and a little adventure, you'll love it here. I would never have stopped here were it not for a tip from a coworker. Caravan is located in a small, unassuming strip mall on Country Club. The outside may not look too impressive, but step inside, and wow... What an interesting, chaotic little treasure this is! Though small, they have fit a surprising amount of goodies under their roof. I had gone in to look for tamarind paste, and got lost in their spices. My nose is still runny from my visit. (It doesn't smell bad by any stretch, but it does smell strong, so be forewarned.) I wound up picking up a few other items that I had not intended, like whole cardamom seeds, baby eggplant, lavosh, and homemade baklava (which we promptly ate in the car). The baklava was excellent - not as heavy and sticky as the Greek variety, this was lighter, the phyllo crispier, and I think they used rose water syrup instead of honey (which I believe is the Lebanese version?). Whatever the recipe, it was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely try to visit this place when you have time to peruse. I did not, and things are organized a bit haphazardly, so I know I missed about half the store. So glad I found it! read more

This store is a hidden gem as far as international markets go. It is much more spacious than it looks from the street and has shelves full of products from the Middle East, Europe and India. They carry brands of food that differs from the other Middle Eastern stores in town. They have many hard-to-find spices (like aleppo pepper and dried currants) and bags of different kinds of lentils and other grains. There is a frozen section and small produce section as well. I walked out the door with Bulgarian berry juice and a Turkish rose-flavored jelly snack, to name a few. read more
