If you like deep sea fishing go down to Captree Boat Basin. You have a choice of what kind of fish you want to catch. I usually go out on the Laura Lee that fishes in the bay most of the time. But that boat was so crowded that day I went on the Captree Pride captain Kenny Higgins and had the time of my life. We went out in the ocean buy a wreck out there and as soon as he anchored we started catching fish. We caught mostly fluke and sea bass and I also caught a couple of Ling which I never ate before but they told me to try. To tell you the truth the Ling taste better than all of them when I brought them home and fried them. But getting back to the boat everyone caught the limit of fish and those that didn't we shared with them so all-in-all everyone had a good day And Captain Kenny knows his fishing grounds because he made sure everyone caught fish he almost guaranteed it. And the crew was very helpful and friendly if your line broke they would rig you right back up again and they also clean the fish for you on the way in and fillet it So all-in-all if you want to catch some fish and enjoy yourself go out on the Captree Pride with Captain Kenny Higgins

Huge Seabass & Fluke. Only the best on the Captree Pride!

Upon check-in we'd learned that the limit is typically 4 people (700 lb maximum), but since most of us are pretty small we were well under that weight limit even as five people, so they allowed it (and I lived to write this review so, all good). After signing my life away and a very quick motor tutorial by a kid who looked like he couldn't be older than middle school, we were on our way. The motor on this boat took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of it I was a pretty good captain (I'd like to think). We put down the anchor and got out to explore Bird and Gull Islands, then headed over to another beach with a hill to climb up and get a bird's eye view of the area. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the harbor, but we kept the party going with some drinks and food (will review that separately). Jay (who I think is the owner or manager?) told us we were only allowed to rent a boat if we took a picture and it turns out he was serious (see the photo shoot results in my photos which turned out pretty cute). He took these on his phone so not sure what else he plans to do with them.

At noon the food stand opens where you can get a beautiful lobster roll as well as many other foods and drinks. Ice cold beer and lobster roll was superb. Gift shop is fun. I stopped in recently looking for a medium light rod and reel combo for some fishing at Belmont Lake State Park and Southard's Pond. The owner greeted me like a regular, even though it was my first visit. Before pointing me toward anything, he asked the right questions -- where I'd be fishing, what I'd be targeting, whether I prefer live bait. That kind of intake matters. It's the difference between a salesman and someone who actually wants to set you up for a good day on the water. He walked me over to a display and pulled a rod, reel, and line combo -- all for $50. "This is all you need," he said. And he meant it. He could have easily steered me toward something pricier, but he didn't. That kind of honesty is rare and it earns loyalty. A few bobbers and a bag of hooks later, I walked out fully rigged and ready to go. The shop is easy to find -- right on Montauk Highway, about half a mile from the Robert Moses Causeway. It's not a massive space, but the selection is surprisingly deep, covering rods, reels, hooks, line, lures, and both fresh and frozen bait. The 4.8 stars on Google Maps aren't an accident. Highly recommended.

After we left the dock The captain went over safety instructions as well as an itinerary for the trip. On this particular trip we were going for Blackfish, as the time of year offered. The "Sashimi" proved to be up to the task, as it is a well maintained and clean vessel with a toilet (head) on board. Within 40 minutes of leaving Northport Harbor, we were off the coast of Connecticut and on the fish. Captain Stu gave a brief tutorial with explanation of what kind of fish we were fishing for, the type of bait used and good technique for this type of fishing. This was helpful, as there were some novice fisherman on board who appreciated the instruction and one on one tutoring. The bait was prepped and ready to roll and both the mate and Captain Stu himself were attentive to helping bait hooks and unhook fish. Once we were "on the fish", Captain Stu would give tips and tricks of the trade to help enhance the fishing experience. On the way back to Long Island, the catch was cleaned and bagged , ready for some seasoning and eventually the grill, the fryer,or the oven. Overall, I would recommend a charter with Captain Stu and the "Sashimi" From beginning to end, he and his "crew" were courteous and well prepared and conducted themselves and the vessel in a professional manner. This is a great alternative if you want to get out and fish but don't want the big charter boat (we had 8 people). The bottom line might be a little more than the big charters, but the personalized fishing experience is worth the extra cost.
