I did not find it much different from a trip to Whole Foods, Fresh Market, or Mom's Organic and found a lot of Safeway-esque sprinkled within. Store was quite empty, hot food bar looked picked over, and their bakery section was lackluster. Luckily their prepared section won me over. My best friend and I picked up a few roasted chickens and sides for a Sunday night family dinner and were surprised by how tasty everything was! The salad and cut fruit were super fresh, crisp, and tasty. The creamed spinach was steakhouse quality. And our rotisserie chickens blew Whole Foods dry-as-the-Sahara birds out the window. Each bite was so moist and well flavored that I thought about it for a few days afterwards, I guess there is a reason why Balducci's catering is so legendary. I'll definitely be looking into their menu more as the holidays roll around.

This Wegmans is much smaller and more compact with a neighborhood vibe rather than the traditional larger store (there's a small bar area and food court). Wegmans has really expanded their vegan and vegetarian prepared food options this year - the juicy Eggplant Parm is delicious! It has become my weekly staple! While the Butter Paneer is quite sweet, I appreciate the diversity of ethnic foods. The Veggie Lasagna is a bit soggy. The Vegan Cobb Salad, Kale Mushroom Tofu Salad, Kung Pao Tofu Bowl, and Vegan Sushi are quite good! The new Truffle Veggies and Portobello Mushroom Pizzas in prepackaged food trays are perfect for roasting veggies, you just throw the tray in the oven! The food court has a few stations - sandwiches, pizza, and burgers and closes around 8pm (salad and poke bowls were discontinued). The veggie burger is quite good, as well as the classic fries and sweet potato fries. The Truffle Mushroom Pizza is delicious! There's an Asian hot bar with Chinese food and a wing station. The crispy tofu in spicy soy sauce is delicious! There's also a bar with pretty good drinks, the Lycheetini was delicious! Wegman's has the best grocery store bakery with super adorable sugar cookies, seasonal caramel apple cake and pumpkin cakes are delicious, other favorites include oegy gooey chocolate chip cookies, Oreo cheesecake, peanut butter cheesecake, summer fruit tarts, chocolate covered strawberry, and moist strawberry shortcake. The seasonal maple donut, strawberry and blueberry cobbler donuts are delicious. The fluffy croissants and Jalapeno Cheddar bagels are quite tasty too! While the baked goods are generally pretty fresh, they are made every other day Including some of the cookies. Free parking without validation up to 2 hours now. Since being acquired by Safeway/Albertsons, the "specialty", in a specialty store, has pretty much vanished. I still do believe that their bistro meals, ordered with care, can be a budget, friendly, yes, I do mean budget, friendly, alternative to fast food (herb, roasted turkey dinner with fingerling potatoes and green beans are $16 and can last for two meals) Their carrot cake, has always been exceptional and remains so The disappointing part is how Balducci's now stocks basically Safeway products and up charges considerably for them. (perfect example is their prepared coleslaw. ) Items like cucumber salad, herring nibs, and other items have disappeared in favor of commercially packaged items. I always found their fish to be fresh and flavorful, but now I have seen a decline in the quality of their fish. This HT is only about a 7 minute walk from my house and I like that they have a garage to get out…read moreof underneath. However, people can come through or out of the street into the garage in about 4 different ways so it can be a little tight around the entrance of the garage. Their cart escalator doesn't work at the moment so you have to go with your cart on the elevator but that's not too bad. They have a Starbucks with a big cafe area with chairs if you have some work to do or would like to enjoy a cup of coffee before starting your grocery hunt! They also have some outdoor seating and have both cashiers and self checkout-- the self checkout line does tend to have somewhat long lines anytime I go though. It's a smaller Harris teeter but still great!

It turns out, I needed to climb three flights of steps to get into the place. I found out they also have an elevator. I guess the accessibility issue didn't stop many people because the store was pretty well filled with customers. I bought a container of fresh strawberries, a bushel of bananas that were well-proced, and half a dozen Florida oranges. I also bought three bottles of Synergy Strawberry Serenity juices. There were a few other things in terms of chicken breasts and ground turkey meat that I will cook with over the weekend. I didn't get a whole lot this time around, and I probably should have considering the amount of effort I put into getting here. This seems like a good grocery store and they even have a pharmacy. Perhaps I just need to get used to the excessive in getting inside!

Before any background, however, here is why this specific store is superlative, in a category of business that is not especially differentiated. It is big, with spacious aisles; it has selections that rival gourmet establishments; the prices are as expected. My wife found a version of our dog's favorite pet food she has difficulty locating; the GF options are extensive; the kosher section is similar to kosher shops I have been to. I saw fancy ice creams and alternatives. And it happens to be conveniently located for us -- but there are other options equidistant. We choose to come to this Giant. Unless they mess up something, I would believe we would continue to do so. Some other commentators have mentioned "internecine" disputes among cashiers, and bonus points for the impressive vocabulary, but we have witnessed none of that. We do not even reside in the metropolitan area. I happen to live in New York City, while my wife stays in San Francisco. The reason we are here is my elderly father, who is still on his own, and the remainder of my family, all of whom are slightly farther out into Montgomery County. We stay just south, in toward the District, from this Giant. This means I know groceries coast to coast (my wife and I both grew up in the Midwest, and we spend considerable time there as well). Whole Foods might -- but it would not be beyond doubt -- have somewhat more high end fare, with prices to match. Trader Joe's has quirky deals. But this Giant is all purpose. If we go to either of those others, that means another stop at a Giant anyway. I hope the return on investment has been good for the corporation, because this particular Giant should be a model. That is the thing: I would have thought the branches in the chain to be indistinguishable, and I would not have thought I'd post to this platform to praise a Giant. So perhaps I should take back that comment, and this Giant can be distinctive, meaning superior. One could quibble about the parking. The signage clearly indicates to go up to the third level. Once you know, there would not be confusion. The layout of the ramp, two-way, does result in an issue, not the fault of Giant, presumably. People do not respect the rules of right-of-way (if you are the one going straight, you take precedence over the person turning). Other than that, however, I look forward to visiting this Giant. May whoever made the decisions leading to its development receive a raise.
