My son recently had to stay in a motel. He wasn't able to afford a nice motel, and had to stay near work. So, the only affordable motel within close proximity to his job landed him here. He phot logged and explained how disturbing the encounter was, here are his notes... Filthy dirty, bug carcass under the sheets, mattress disgusting. Shower doesn't work, tub dirty, with bugs running around in and on it. Quite noisy from the "permanent" residence. Long hair found between sheets. THANK GOD NO CARPET! Understand the rooms were recently remodeled, (I wonder how far a $10.00 budget goes) but if this is recent damage, WOW! Had to stay for 2 nights until he was able to relocate to a nice establishment. read more

Stay anywhere else. The manager was rude right away to us. Cigs in the ashtray outside out door. Chain link fences everywhere with an old tennis court in the middle that had seen better days. The room was half done. Luckily booking.com refunded our second night and were able to find a better place to end our lovely road trip in New England. Just don't stay here. read more

Absolute worst hotel I've been in. 1st issue was the door key did not work. They said they would fix it, come 11 pm could not get in still, had to call manager. Had to call for table and some chairs, clock and hair dryer. Lights were so bright like they were looking for escaped prisoners. Spiders in the bed with plenty of spider webs and dead bugs on the edge of the AC unit. TV would not shut off, bright blank screen and had no volume control. No remorse from the manager, almost like she thought we were making this stuff up. I rarely complain about stuff, but this was unbelievable. read more

Off the bat i want to say that dont expect to come here and think its the hilton because its not and I can honestly say that I took it for what it was and i enjoyed my stay. This was really a last minute decision that i made. Everywhere else was booked in the town and this one had 1 spot left. Now initially i was very hesitant about booking here but it was either this or my car so i chose the prior. I walked in the office and was greated by the receptionist who was very kind and very easy to look at too, wink* wink*. She got me all set up in minutes and gave me a key card and a piece of paper that mapped out the place and made it easier to find my room. Also to add i lucked out and got myself upgraded to a king sized bed. So as I opened the door i was still hesitant not knowing what i was to expect but that quickly went away. As i said prior, its not the hilton and i knew that coming in, all i needed was a place to relax myself for a day after a 4 hour drive from NY. It had pretty much everything i needed. The bed sheets were clean (i checked), it had a central air unit that worked amazing, and the bathroom was in good shape aswell. I also want to add that the room as a whole looked like there has been some remodeling that occured recently. The place was far better looking than your aveeage run of the mill motel the floors looked almost new. Now to be fair there were a few small things i did notice, nothing to really go crazy for but for 1 the toilet paper dispenser was broken off and the tv was a bit outdated it was very blurry i found myself squinting alot nothing a small upgrade cant fix. I've stayed here 3 times because it is very convenient when I go on my deep sea fishing trips out of Gloucester. Also, the motel is only about 1 mile or less walk from Good Harbor Beach. I am glad to see they have installed new doors to each room and use a key card system. Before, the doors seemed pretty flimsy and not safe. I suppose this upgrade has made for a bit of a price hike but it's worth it. The room was big but pretty sparse. During my most recent stay, the water was lukewarm. I called the front desk but the water was lukewarm again the next morning. Also, at night there was a big cricket type bug in my bathroom. I guess one must consider that the rooms are near woods and there is a "camp" feel to them, so I wasn't surprised to see a cricket bug. The floors of my room was not carpeted but has sort of a plastic feel...it's not very appealing. Also, during each of my stays, there has been a cleaning liquid smell permeating the room. I will say, the front desk people are nice and overall it has a relaxed atmosphere. The pool is a good bonus. I think if you are looking for a convenient way to enjoy Gloucester and you are using the lodging as a place merely to put your head down, the Captain's Lodge fits the bill. It's overall spartan, a bit tired 1960's motor lodge in feel but not bad considering the location. I do hope the owners continue to make little upgrades (like they did with the doors). read more

I had to give a star to leave a review. This "hotel" was absolutely disgusting. We called the emergency night number and the person said that they couldn't do anything about it that late at night. The toilet did not flush, and they wouldn't move us to a new room. This is at 12:30am when we checked in after a 16 hr day of vending in Salem. There was pubic and regular hairs on the pillows, in the bed, in the shower and on the towels. There is clumps of hair in the shower drain. The first floor window was completely open and the back door was not locked when we arrived. They (the hotel) is refusing to refund my $150 for this room that I booked through booking.com read more

Almost uninhabitable. The only plus is that they have hot water and a heater in the room. Bed sheets had hair on it, hair in the bathroom still, toilet not flushing, and bad smell in the room. When we called the front desk for more towels, they said we can go to the office to pick it up. They also told us to go into the toilet tank to flush the toilet. Yuk!! Others who reviewed this place are a bunch of prima donnas who demand special care and pampering from a caste system that shouldn't be a part of our American culture. Based on the other reviews we expected the worst. We expected hell on earth. We got nothing of the sort. The gal at the desk was great. The room was clean. The shower was hot and nice. The doors seal tight and allow in no draft or noise. It's close to Main St. The price is the best in town. It's great. All three of us thought it was great. We are travelers who have been all over the world. We are not pampered, pathetic p#ssies who need a brand new building void of all character and culture in which to sleep. We need a ROOM. That's what we paid for- A ROOM. We didn't require silver spoons, a makeup crew, and a butler. We needed A ROOM. And our room, 125, was absolutely wonderful with no flaws. Character is not a flaw. It's the Captain's Lodge, not the Hilton. We came to Gloucester for Gloucester. If we wanted some b#llshit in the Hamptons, we would've gone to the f#cking Hamptons, but I'd rather sleep with the homeless than spend my time with the snobs who've ripped this place apart. If I could give this place ZERO stars, I would. All we needed was a room to sleep in for a few hours (early morning fishing), and the Captain's Lodge couldn't even manage that. They double booked our room, and then couldn't find us another room anywhere (and they kept insisting we call the hotels they found, which were all fully booked and 45+ minutes away, not 20 min as they claimed). The night manager literally ran from the office, and the handy man came in acting as the "new" manager. Choice phrases from the night: "American express can s%$t in their hat" "I've had crackheads and winos give me less trouble" (I'd feel safe staying here, wouldn't you?) "There's going to be calls for shots fired soon" (this after HE had called the police on US because we wouldn't leave the lobby--having nowhere to go from there, we were looking for somewhere to stay ourselves) He also called my mother a b%#ch and threatened to pick her up and bodily remove her from the office. We're still waiting for the call back from the owner that we were promised, but we're not holding our breath. Stay away--very far away. read more

This motel was absolutely disgusting. I was planning on taking my mother to Gloucester for her birthday. We looked around for a place to stay and found this place, unfortunately. I reserved the room through booking.com. When we arrived at the motel it was CLEARLY not what we were expecting. Paint chipping from the fence, the doors to the rooms looked like closet doors. The "office" is a smelly, grotesque room with that horrible yellow tint lighting, very creepy. The front desk woman was unfriendly. I asked to see the room before paying. She said this was perfectly fine and said we could wait to register me to the room. She brings me down the parking lot to this door I thought was a closet, opens to door and I'm only allowed to look in! I couldn't even step a foot in she said unless I paid. Well that was totally okay because just looking in the room I knew I could never stay there. The beds had those nasty comforters from the 1980s. The room had a musty odor, there was one small window in the back of the room. The window Looked to be made from acrylic because it was all scratched, you could barely look through it. They put a giant TV to hopefully distract the guests from the disgusting trash they call a motel room. I know for a fact if we stayed there we would have a disease, bed bugs or some infection. So I told her I didn't want the room. What did she do? Tell me "okay contact booking.com" and charged me the 150$ for the room. Even though I refused to stay there (and never stepped foot in the room as per her request). They didn't answer my calls or even booking.com calls. I had to pay for a disgusting motel I would never stay at. Keep FAR AWAY FROM THIS DUMP. Instead I paid 3x the price and stayed at Ocean Hotel at Bass Rocks and had an amazing time. COCK ROACHES on the ceiling falling onto the bed. When addressed with Mr. owner he came to the room and took the roach and asked if we had seen it die. Then, Mrs. Owner called the room and screamed, " This isn't a roach room, this is a clean room!!! If you leave, you get no refund"!!! Never been so horribly treated!! Roaches do not equal clean. After being shipwrecked on the North Shore, two captains had no choice but to try to find lodging for the night. Every single hotel/motel/b&b was full in Rockport. What are two hard up sailors to do? We journeyed south to Gloucester and found the last room at the Captain's Lodge. The rooms were huge. The bathrooms were clean. The staff was beyond friendly. Simple motel with a pool and tennis court. Driving by it looks cute enough. I didn't give myself much time to book a room so I could only book this motel. Though I find it hard to believe no other place had a room to offer. The woman at the front desk, who I assume is the owner is very nice. I know they are renovating now so I don't want to give too bad a review. My bed was fine, the room was huge but the cleaning, not so good. Maybe they are overwhelmed. In their defense, I've stayed in a dirty Marriott. I think it would be a great place for a reunion or some get together with friends but it's no Ritz Carlton. I just want to suggest one thing as far as cleaning goes.... scrubbing bubbles. They work wonders and don't involve much scrubbing from you. If I lived closer, I'd help you out. read more

After a long Saturday of beebopping around Rockport with Alyssa J, we made a last minute decision to keep on beebopping through the weekend. We roughly called 30 motels, hotels, and inns, and the Captains Lodge was the only place with an available room. After scanning the yelp reviews, I presented Alyssa with the following dilemna: Good News-motel is only about 1.5 miles away. Bad News-we will probably be shot. However, the two of us are brave little officers of the high seas, and decided to brave the Captains lodge... ...and it was fine. Maybe more than fine. While the Captains Lodge is definitely a no frills, extremely dated motor inn, the other yelp reviews seem a bit harsh. Perhaps the lodge has changed management or perhaps we hit it on a good night, but the front desk woman was absolutely lovely. She even let us check out our room, a smoking double (the only double left), before we decided upon it to make sure it was not too stinky. The room itself, while clearly a smoking room, was clean enough. It was also huge. Like you could rollerskate in it, but you probably shouldn't. Pool, tennis court, and landscape were all very much full of wear and tear but certainly workable. Prices are reasonable. I wouldn't make the Captains Lodge a destination, but if you do end up here, you'll more likely than not be just fine. We were. read more

The worst ever. We checked in for one night and immediately checked out! There was hair in the sheets, the toilet was constantly running and would not flush. The carpet was ripped and stained, the mini fridge was dirty and smelled like rotten garbage, and my 8 year old son picked up a half empty liquor bottle off of the floor beside the bed. We booked a 2 night last minute trip to Gloucester so my husband could go deep sea fishing with his family. Wish I had checked reviews prior to booking, because our 2 night stay became a one night stay. I knew it was a motel, not the Trump Tower, but I was very disturbed by the smell of the room, the spiders, the hairs in the beds and almost see through sheets and bedspreads that are in dire need of being replaced. Very poor customer service, with mixed information of what to expect for "housekeeping". We asked to speak with the manager several times, left messages with contact information and never received return phone calls. DO NOT GO HERE!! They are happy to take your money, but your feedback or complaints will fall on deaf ears! read more

We have been coming to this hotel annually for about 6 years. Normally I would give this hotel 3 or 4 stars because although it is older the rooms are clean and spacious. When we come we usually book 2 or 3 rooms and housekeeping seems to be hit or miss with cleaning them. They regularly missed cleaning at least one of our rooms every day. This year there is no housekeeping due to covid. This is where things got weird, no housekeeping meant having to ask for toiletries and towels. The toilet paper is the cheap stuff that isn't tightly wound and runs out fast. Upon arriving we noticed there was a few squares on the holder and no back up roll so we sent our adult son to the office to ask for 2 rolls considering we where booked for 3 nights. They told him only one at a time. Fast foreword to the next day our son goes for another roll and is given another. This pattern continues for our room. Our friends who booked the second room however where refused toilet paper and told they had to be considerate of others, something about a shortage. They gave up and purchased a few rolls from the grocery store. My family hearing this story is now out of soap and toilet paper and too timid to ask for replacements. I think this may be our last time visiting this hotel! read more

Well, after reading the review about the cockroaches, my family and I carefully inspected the room before bringing our stuff in. Fortunately, there were no bugs and the place was clean and bathroom was clean too. The staff was nice and let us check in earlier than 2 ( we needed to be at the whale watching part before 1:30). It is very outdated- I agree with that part. I still can't figure out why there was a bottle opener in the bathroom, haha. But, we were only there for the night- I wouldn't stay there for an extended time. The mattresses also need upgrading- it felt like sleeping on bricks. I would not recommend this filthy and unsafe motel to anyone. I traveled to the Gloucester area last week with my father as part of his 80th birthday celebration. I could tell from the moment we pulled into the parking lot that the motel was probably going to be a dump, but I was hoping for the best. When we inspected the rooms, not only were there cigarette butts littering the outside area, but the room smelled terrible and the entire place was unclean. We decided for the sake of our health and well-being to find another motel and my father asked for a refund, but was denied. Mind you, it was his 80th birthday.
