Whereas I would give it a five (5) in quantity referencing the shrimp , I would give it a three (3) for flavor. Both of us thought the Shrimp Boil tasted extremely average and neither one of us would get it again. I did like the Hush Puppies and would give them a four, but they definitely were not the best I've ever had. I also did not really like their melted butter and I am a butter lover, nor did I care for their cocktail sauce which did not add to or enhance the flavor of the Shrimp Boil Platter. Overall, we got a large amount of shrimp, but it was just not that flavorful to us. My potato was so bland, I left it on the platter. I did enjoy the corn on the cob, and it, besides the hush puppies were my favorite. In saying that, we spent about $85 for our meal (before tip) and really felt nothing was too savory. We stopped here on in way through and we were pleasantly surprised. The rolls are melt in your mouth delicious. My husband had jambalaya pasta and I had the red beans and rice. The pasta was creamy, not too spicy, and had a good ratio of the ingredients to pasta. My red beans and rice were well seasoned and were a hearty portion served in a pasta bowl. This is the best fried shrimp I've had since I moved to OK 10 years ago! The hushpuppies were also super tasty, the place is super cool on the inside and has a cozy feel. Wait staff was on top of it and it did not take long to get my food, hot and fresh!! If back in McAlester i will for sure be back! read more

Love this place! Takes reservations for parties of 10 or more. Huge wait list for less... but worth it! Food is amazing and I have never had a bad experience! Do yourself a favor and stop in for some of the best Cajun seafood you'll fine outside of Louisiana! The seafood sampler was amazing! The crawfish etouffee was beyond delicious! Catfish perfect! Shrimp perfect as well! The best surprise was the jalepeno cornbread! OMG unreal good! Lastly, my server Hailee was just the best! The whole crew was just the nicest and helpful but Hailee deserves extra credit! She has an amazing attitude and personality she is great at what she does! I can't wait to come back! read more

Very good lunch stop on our way through town. We ate the lunch menu at 3 in the afternoon. One piece of catfish and a cup of gumbo. We received two hot rolls each before we ordered. The meal also came with two hush puppies. The food was delicious and the service was perfect. read more

As soon as you are seated they bring you freshly made rolls and a basket of butter pats & honey is sitting on the table. Yum! We both ordered the 10 oz New York Strip steak, medium-rare. I had a side salad w/Ranch dressing on the side and fries. My hubby had a loaded baked potato and steamed broccoli. The steaks were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The sides were very good also. Excellent meal and service. The only con is we were unfamiliar with the area and we drove past the restaurant as the Captain John's sign is not easily seen and realized the Windmill Catfish Cove and Captain John's are the same restaurant. read more

Kind of hard to find, and worth the long wait on a Busy Friday night. Great drinks, food was bit salty, but streak was very nice. Veggies a bit over cooked and my blackened snapper etoufee was very nice. Ashley was very good, but we wished she could have recommended the apple pie. read more

Fantastic atmosphere and very good food. By far the best we're the employees. My server was Perfect. She regularly checked in on me and offered to get me whatever I needed for sides or sauces. What does it say when we try to plan our trips down 69 to be at a point to stop at Captain John's? The place is cute with the water-themed decor, the staff is always helpful and friendly. The food! Oh my word! The food! Steaks are my favorite and some of the best out there. Hubby likes the Cajun and fish. Drinks are yummy. I need gluten free and they have never disappointed. This is a nice, clean, casual restaurant with lots of fresh-faced employees and nice decor. It's in the small town of McAlester, OK and has a small town feel where everyone knows one another, but it is as modern as any other suburban restaurant I have visited. I ordered the Cajun Jambalaya Pasta which is pasta in a mildly spicy cream sauce with shrimp, chicken, and chunks of sausage. After ordering, the waitress brought each of us a single biscuit in a little bowl. It was an odd presentation, but let me tell you what... that was the best biscuit I have ever eaten! It had great color and a dusting of flour on the outside and was super soft (just short of doughy) on the inside, perfection. There are plastic bottles of honey on the table to go along with it, but it seems to be diluted with something because it is a bit runny and doesn't have the full flavor you get from pure honey. My pasta was very good. It came with a generous piece of cornbread that had bits of peppers in it, so it had good flavor, but it was undercooked and still a bit raw. I asked the waitress for another biscuit instead and after a short explanation she was happy to oblige. Both the pasta and the cornbread had a lot of flavor and each were good on their own, but I felt that they competed with each other. This dish would be better with some buttered, toasted French bread. My husband had the snapper which was smaller than expected and he said it was overcooked and rubbery, not something he would order again. The potato and hush puppies that accompanied it were very good, though. All in all, we liked this restaurant. They have decent prices for the quality of food you are getting and we would definitely stop here again. read more

Delicious food and very reasonable prices. We were hoping for something serviceable close to our hotel, but our expectations were greatly exceeded, and we enjoyed a great meal. We got the seafood platter and a catfish poboy, and all were very good, with the standouts being the etouffee and the crab cake. The apple pie for dessert was also very good, although the vanilla ice cream was just OK. Highly recommended to anyone driving through town. read more

What a lovely surprise! Food was great, totally surpassed our expectations! I order fried catfish; just right amount of coating and fish was clean taste. JS ordered his all-time go-to menu item, fried shrimps plate, right amount of crunchiness in a nice size. Oh, the complimentary soft rolls are so yum! LoL I could just stuff myself with that, if that is legal. Our server was very nice; she even offered a hush puppy for JS to sample since he only eats a particular type. We went there around 4-ish on a Monday, so it was not busy. Liked the overall layback decor; plenty space between tables. The food and services were great . The restaurant has a lot of great looking signs and other memorabilia. The place was packed and had several large groups,but the food still came out in a reasonable amount of time and tasted great. Tried Captain John's when in town for the weekend to visit lake Eufaula, and it was delish! The decor was so fun to look at, very clean place, and food was great! Service was attentive and the food came out so quick! We were able to make reservations for our larger party which was great!! Will be back for sure! read more

My boyfriend and I went out to dinner on Saturday night. The place was packed so we had to wait an hour for a table. The waitress was very friendly and kept checking up on us. The food was very good. They give free rolls with butter, we ordered the gator bits (I'm from the city so he made me try them they really do taste like chicken), ribeye with shrimp, gumbo, and hush puppies, and I ordered the quail breasts with corn and french fries. It was a bit unnerving to see the whole quail when I thought it'd be just the breasts, but regardless it was very good. My boyfriend was obsessed with the gumbo and was very happy with the taste of his steak and shrimp. We'd definitely go back even for the wait and price. It was very good read more

Catfish was good but not served with any sauces. Baked Sweet Potato was good. Butter was on the table. Waitress did not ask if we wanted any sauce for the fish or any brown sugar for the sweet potato. Had to flag her down and ask for sauce and brown sugar. And then charged extra for the sauce and brown sugar! When did they stop serving sauce with fish and brown sugar with a baked sweet potato? read more

Bartender was horrible! She was much more interested in waiting on the locals. We asked for specific drink we were gonna give to a local birthday girl.... never got it. Food was adequate but had to cut the snapper with a knife, steak had no flavor and waitstaff seemed more interested in getting us out the door...after a 45 minute wait. read more

We were driving through and decided to sit down instead of do fast food. This was such a great choice! The atmosphere is really fun and nicely done and the food is amazing. The NY strips were cooked perfectly, the etouffee had just the right amount of spice and crawfish in every bite and The fried catfish was tender and delicious! The rolls served in the beginning are warm, buttery, and tender. We will definitely return the next time we drive through. read more
