I've been certified for a decade but dove for my first real dives with thus crew and they were fantastic. The crews were great, very knowledgeable, very accommodating, the boat was great, gear was in fantastic shape and I had a blast. They tell you about the site before you jump out and debrief you on what you saw on your return which was great for newbies like me. They load your gear to the boat and set your equipment up too. I felt lazy watching them haul things around. When you are done, rinse your gear and leave it with them to dry and pick it up the next day. Totally great service. Overall, the staffs are very nice and helpful. But I think they should provide more training for the resort course. They took us to a swimming pool for training for two hours. After that, we have to dive 35 feet under water in the middle of the ocean. It was not easy from a 10 feet deep water in the swimming pool to 35 feet deep in the middle of the ocean. I wish they can take us near the coast for second training for an hour. So it will be easier for first timer like us. However, it was very pretty where they took us to dive. If you do have experience with diving, I do recommend them. read more

My wife and I were on our dive honeymoon and went out with Dive Key West twice to various reef dives. They were very big on safety and trying to find the best visibility for us. We had snorkelers, OW certs, and various other needs on each trip but they did a great job of taking care of everyone. Professional and nice would be the best description of their operation. We went out with a smaller private charter to the Vandy after our Dive Key West trips and they were there as we came out of the water and we had a funny conversation with their divemaster and captain who remembered us from the day before. We rented gear for a dive the following day, right before the shop closed. The next morning we found out our dive was canceled, but when we tried to bring back the gear (right when the shop opened) they were rude and unaccommodating. They refused to give us our money back or even offer any sort of refund. They wouldn't have been able to rent out the gear we had to anyone else anyway, given we only had it during the hours they were closed. I just don't think that's a smart way to run a business. The cancellation policy is pretty stiff and encourages dangerous diving. I woke up with a huge head cold and whooping cough and was denied a refund for my dive trip. I was told I could have a 'rain check' but I live in NYC so will never be down in Key West again. So my choices were, dive against PADI advice or lose $120. Great options right. On top of that be warned, they do not provide guides unless requested. This is different from every other state and foreign country I have dove in. On Friday, November 1st I had a dive scheduled with Dive Key West for the Vandenberg. I had called about a week and a half in advance after reading through the reviews on Yelp and reviewing the various dives that Dive Key West offers. After seeing such a great set of reviews, and seeing that they offer a dive for the Vandenberg, I called and scheduled the dive. Since I was the first diver to schedule something for that day they gave me the option to choose what I wanted to do. I thought that was pretty cool! On arrival at 8am, I was unfortunately informed that their dive boat had to be hauled out of the water. At first I was pretty disappointed that they hadn't bothered to call me, considering that I flew in all the way from Seattle and had prepaid for the trip. Dive Key West came through for me though. They set me up with one of their frienemies, Captain's Corner, and got me out for the Vandenberg dive I was hoping for. They drove me to the other shop, and picked me up on return. Since that dive started later, I hung out in the Dive Key West shop and talked for about an hour, sharing stories, and discussing ways for their business to grow its presence online (my 9-5 job, basically). They gave me a free coffee mug as a way of thanks and sorry, which I'll enjoy being a typical over-caffeinated Seattleite. All said, I had a great trip with the other dive shop and I really appreciate that Dive Key West made sure to connect me with another shop that was doing the dive I wanted. They were very friendly and fun to talk with. I knock off a star for not reaching out to me in advance, knowing that their boat would be out of the water, and that I had pre-paid for a dive with them that wasn't going to happen. read more

Dove twice with them on vacation; Highly reccomment this place. Did a two-dive Vandenberg trip that was DM lead with 6 divers following along. I was hesitant about the DM-lead dive, but it turned out to be a good thing. The vessel is SO massive that with only 20 minutes of bottom time, you almost didn't know where to start. Greg did a nice job of leading us around and making sure no one got lost (and we had some rooks with us). The owner was very knowledgeable and safety conscious - i was diving NOX32 and I didn't even have to ask to check my tanks - he came right over with the gauge and started analyzing before I had the chance to say anything. DM on the boat was fantastic - sat us down each dive and told us what to expect and where we were going. Made for a relaxing nice dive. Second set of dives were on the middle Sambo reef - went with my non-diving family. We parked the boat where they could snorkel while I dove below them. Beautiful wildlife on a nice reef - not quite the carribean, but very nice nevertheless. They were attentive to the snorkelers just as much as the divers, which is rare - usually the snorkelers are ignored and they crew made them feel part of the dive as well. We did some Internet searches for a "resort dive" for newbies in a single day. After finding mixed reviews at other places, we decided on Dive Key West. They were fabulous. We booked the dive at less than 24 hrs and we showed up the next day at 9am and had a great time. Lana was amazing be sure to ask for her. She was very patient and wanted to make sure you truly understood the basics. There were foreign tourists there and she handle the language barriers perfectly The afternoon ocean dive was also great. No crabby captains or anything. They provided water and snacks. The equipment is very good. At least by newbie standards. Everything worked and nothing seemed off. Highly recommend. Got Open Water Certified with Max and it was great!! He has very patient with me, despite my short term memory and lack of remembering! He made the cert. Course fun but was very knowledgeable to make sure I felt comfortable and safe. I even came back for a night dive which was AMAZING. What a different experience! Guides/staff knew what they were doing and I felt safe in their hands. The owner Bob was a lot of fun . These guys are what every dive shop should be! We mainly dealt with Brad and Lana, they were both really helpful, and knowledgeable. This was my wife's first ocean dive since getting here license and she was somewhat nervous. The staff at Dive Key West instantly put her at ease. Because it was the off season it was just the two of us and the dive master. This was like a private tour for regular charter rates! I can't speak to their guided trips, etc., but they sold me a pair of fins that were broken and $20 more than the same pair at Divers Direct in downtown Key West. Upon returning to get my money back I was informed they don't do refunds of any kind, despite they're sign only saying "No Cash Refunds". Excellent dive shop that works hard to keep you happy. We dove Joe's Tug and M32 Reef on a Sunday morning. The staff was great, checking us in and setting up our stuff as soon as we got there. Rental equip was all in good shape. Easy ride over to the Yacht Club/boat from the shop. Boat was totally professional and truly full service. Only regret was being cold in our 3mil wetsuits. I was with extended family on a one week Key West vacation. Because of other activities, my dive time was going to be limited to a day or two. I went into the shop one afternoon to inquire about dive availability for the next day. I was quickly told by a clerk at the counter and confirmed by an older gentleman from the office (he didn't introduce himself) that I would have to buy their "refresher course" before I would be allowed to dive. The course included a pool session whereby I would have to demonstrate my diving skill and then take a test, because it had been longer that 2 years since I had recorded a "deep dive". Never mind that I had been PADI certified since 1994, PADI advanced certified since 1995, IANTD nitrox certified since 2000. Never mind that I hade been a volunteer diver for the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans since 1997. And never mind that I had logged over 300 open water dives, including one the USS Oriskany out of Pensacola, FL, shortly after it was sunk and had photos to show. I confess that after a few minutes of trying to justify my ability to dive safely with them, I felt personally insulted. I left the shop without arguing further. And that spoiled the remainder of that day and the next for me. - So much for their claim to have a courteous staff. In other reviews of Dive Key West, Inc., 3128 N. The drive from the shop to the boat with Bob was entertaining. He had funny stories! Ian was our guide and he was patient, safety conscious, and made the trip super fun for my daughter and me. We are inexperienced divers, and felt totally secure the entire trip. We saw a 200 pound grouper, a nurse shark (they don't attack people!), barracudas, and a huge conch. I have been certified for about three years now and thus is the third dive for me outside of the certifying shop and this shop was great. They offered are resort option that required a morning of class and pool dives, which was different than others in the key and why we went with them although we did not take advantage of it. The day of the dive we showed up and got all rental equipment for two in abut 20 minutes. The equipment was top notch. We were required to hire an instructor as a guide since I had not dove in over a year and she was very knowledgeable and informative. Despite rough sea and getting seasick the site was awesome. Saw some fantastic sea life, coral etc. Highly recommend they are truly professional and friendly. read more

My husband and I have been diving for 20+ years each and Dive Key West is by far the most professional, by the book dive operation we have experienced. I have seen bad reviews from people who wanted to bend rules or take chances. I discounted those immediately because safe diving is fun diving. I agree with others, we had great boat captains and DMs. I get sea sick more often than not and they accommodated my request to get in first and out last between dives. They also quickly replaced a high pressure hose on my personal gear. So if you need maintenance or repair, they have the techs to do it. read more

Very helpful and full of knowledge on the various wrecks and reefs. Highly recommend the Vandenberg wreck. Also, the dive shop staff was helpful, friendly, and knew what they were talking about. We decided to take a trip to South Beach, FL for my 30th Birthday and was told that I had to the Keys and try the Dive Key West for scuba diving. We drove out for the weekend and and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had, I got to swim exotic fish, turtles, the complete under water experience. South Beach was great but Key West was absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend this if want to have a wonderful scuba diving experience. DO NOT WASTE your MONEY or more importantly, your precious TIME while on vacation, diving with this outfit! From the very beginning it was clearly evident that our dive experience was entirely contingent upon the profit margins of the DIve shop. We had a group of 4...2 divers on air and 2 that paid for the boat ride and snorkel gear. The prices were far higher than those I experience in Jupiter, Fl where I live. We asked about a wreck dive and they blatantly avoided a direct answer until we got underway. Then the answer was that we needed to complete the " Wreck Dive " waiver before leaving shop. Such BS! Dive master didn't want to go in for 1st dive but did, but never got in the water on 2nd dive so we were left to guide this lovely French couple that was very inexperienced. So 6 divers and no DM ..we found ourselves in water we could stand up and never went deeper than 25 ft! Piss poor performance and experience all around. I didn't dive with Dive Key West but the reason I didn't is why they get two stars. If you book a dive with this company be sure to tell them you have logged a dive within the last 12 months or be prepared to shell out an additional $100. Your last dive was 13 months ago...too bad. While I can appreciate a dive shop that puts safety first, requiring an instructor assisted dive in 30 ft of water, that's right 30 ft, and charging an ADDITIONAL $100 for it is a bit extreme. What is so magical about 12 months? Is the person that got certified 11 months ago and logged 2 dives "safer" than the person with 100 dives but hasn't been diving in 13 months? What was equally as bad was the attitude of the shop worker. Having used many different dive shops, I have found that there is usually one commonality, laid back friendly service. This place had anything but. Based on other reviews I can only assume that had my wife and I actually made it on the boat we would have had at least an acceptable experience. Unfortunately for DKW, we took our $600 for the 3 days of 2 person diving elsewhere due to an inflexible and expensive policy and poor customer service. read more
