Old world butcher shop right in the middle of the Italian Market in Philly. We waited in the longest line just to get inside d/t pandemic capacity restrictions and boy was it worth it! Picked up spinach and provolone sausages, sliced braciola, and hot lamb sausages to take home to Lancaster and had the chance to ogle at everything else in their meat cases. Who doesn't love a bunch of Italian Philly boys yelling at each other while you shop? Lol

Smoked 24lb pig.

This has to be the coolest old fashioned butcher still in the city of Philadelphia. A place were you not only can order a whole animal but, get special orders for a great price! I ordered a whole pig from here. I asked for a pig around 20 to 25lbs. Dominic got me the perfect sized fresh pig of 24lbs and even cut the back feet off for me. I was able to fit it into my smoker and create a perfect smoked pig for Memorial Day! Not only can you get special orders, their sausage is to die for. A little pricy but, after you have some of their Italian sausage you can never go back to grocery store junk. Also don't let the old look fool you. I have been shown around the whole store and it's clean. Just keep it mind a lot of the store is original and over that time items have been worn out and no matter how much they are cleaned they will never truly look clean again. It's fine I would not go here if I did not trust were my food came from. We are just too used to our local grocery store and it's packaged meat with fake food coloring. Also ignore the fake 1 star reviews from the PETA fanatics who have nothing better to do then ruin a good businesses name with unfounded clames and idiotic opinions.

Service is great. All of the sausage is top tier, but the broccoli rabe and sharp provolone sausage will change your life. Worth a drive!

Well this time I brought hubby...and not my son and hubby wanted to get the meat and such first, then eat and then walk around.. I'm like you sure??!! cuz I know... but he was sure, he got this !! So 1 cow heart, 5 lbs of chicken wings, 2 large smoked cow bones, 1 turkey backbone, 2 turkey wings, 1 neck, 1lb of gizzards, 4lbs of bacon, 3 cornish hens and 6 steaks-- over 70lbs of food--- that he had to huff around that market!! cuz he said he could.. I was very impressed but anyway... 1. Service here is exceptional- I don't buy my meats anywhere else here at the terminal. 2. Best prices and quality for what you need 3. THAT BACON is amazing 4. They also carry other big game meat and I love that the venison is always fresh and makes my venison chili and stew perfect. I've been buying meats and specialty meats here for years, def worth the drive. Plus- 2hrs of free parking with proper validation- just remember what door you came in, cuz thats the door that takes you to the proper elevator in the parking structure.

My dining companion argued strenuously that pickles have no place on a hoagie but I ignored him lol. I skipped the mayo tho. Surprisingly Dan takes credit cards and Apple Pay, $5 min. He keeps long hours for such a simple sandwich shop. Dan's used to be a butcher & convenience store, maybe back in 1947. Now the shelves are mostly empty except for chips soda and milk, and the butcher case mostly has coleslaw and deli meats. It's actually kind of depressing if you walk to the back. Next time I'll get a meatball or tuna hoagie. Vegetarian rating: one star, they don't even try.

Its a small old school deli that slices the meat to order and provides service with a smile. I was working in Fishtown and checked yelp real quick to see if there was a new spot nearby that I could try for lunch. Dan's had very good reviews and it was less than 5 minutes away. I think its a husband and wife that run this place but I wasn't 100% sure. I ordered a large Italian hoagie and woman behind the counter grabbed the roll from the clear bin in front of the counter and the gentlemen sliced the meat fresh for my Italian and added peppers, oil & vinegar and SPO. There are not many places that still operate like a true old school deli and I really enjoyed it. As she handed me the hoagie she asked if I had ever been there before to which I answered "no." She said well you'll be back. I loved the confidence and she was 100% right! If you are in the area and love a good Italian hoagie Dan's is a must try.

No disrespect at all to Heather Thomason, because this really is her brain child. I've loved following her for a few years now and was happy her kickstarter was backed. I really wanted to contribute and fought for it a bit, but it was backed before I made up my mind. I did wrestle with it for a bit, about what package I would get, but I knew it would be logistically hard to support. We walked in and saw a lot of interesting items. Duck Eggs really caught our eye, but we didn't want to carry them around with us. Decided to leave the store, go to ITV for a drink, and come back before they closed at 6:00 PM. Ordered a nice cut of flank steak and the duck eggs. Maybe for a Kangaroo burger later this week? I just love the idea here, where Primal wants to be more interconnected with farms. I'm really into better quality eggs now, for when we make pasta or things like that. Knowing what the animal ate, really helps make a better product when egg is the star.

I loved the stories and reputation that Heather Thomason set during her time at Kensington…read moreQuarters. And although I still haven't gotten around to trying it during that time, I was looking forward to her and Cecille May's commitment to make sustainable, pasture-raised meat more readily available to Philadelphia when they branched out on their own for Primal Supply Meats (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2016/05/31/kensington-quarters-butcher-heads-out-on-her-own/). And when I sampled their offerings at spots like Stargazy, Garage, and Tired Hands Fermenteria it added up to some of the best meat dishes I've had. While they did an amicable job of providing their meats to restaurants and farmers markets, Primal Supply really needed a butcher shop of their own to better prepare Philly for the carnivore cravings that their meats illicit. And when I heard that they were set to open a few blocks away from me in the spot that used to house the old East Passyunk hardware store (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2017/12/15/primal-supply-butcher-shop-east-passyunk/), it lead to some of the best sausages that I've had (and I say this as a Cappuccio's die hard! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cappuccios-meats-philadelphia). the bacon & thyme pork sausage was sweet yet smoky and savory at the same time. And the pork Vindaloo yielded an ample amount of Indian spices and heat. Add in the ability to get beef, pork, chicken, liver, lamb, goat stew, and even pet food, and you'll find a huge variety of options. They also carry local cheeses from the likes of Birch Run Farms, pasta from Severino, and the oppotunity to join their pay as you go Butcher's Club meat program, making it another solid addition to East Passyunk!
