The Italian hoagie at $11 for a whole is excellent, fresh roll with thinly sliced nitrate-cured meats and provolone, plenty but not too much, add as many vegetables like onions lettuce peppers and tomato as you like. My dining companion argued strenuously that pickles have no place on a hoagie but I ignored him lol. I skipped the mayo tho. Surprisingly Dan takes credit cards and Apple Pay, $5 min. He keeps long hours for such a simple sandwich shop. Dan's used to be a butcher & convenience store, maybe back in 1947. Now the shelves are mostly empty except for chips soda and milk, and the butcher case mostly has coleslaw and deli meats. It's actually kind of depressing if you walk to the back. Hands down one of the best Italian hoagies I have ever had! Dan's is exactly what I picture when thinking about a corner deli. Its a small old school deli that slices the meat to order and provides service with a smile. I was working in Fishtown and checked yelp real quick to see if there was a new spot nearby that I could try for lunch. Dan's had very good reviews and it was less than 5 minutes away. I think its a husband and wife that run this place but I wasn't 100% sure. I ordered a large Italian hoagie and woman behind the counter grabbed the roll from the clear bin in front of the counter and the gentlemen sliced the meat fresh for my Italian and added peppers, oil & vinegar and SPO. There are not many places that still operate like a true old school deli and I really enjoyed it. As she handed me the hoagie she asked if I had ever been there before to which I answered "no." Within minutes he produced two sandwiches, all while talking with us and giving us info about the shop and the neighborhood. I've lived in this city my entire life and this might be the best hoagie I've ever had. $10 for a large which is big enough to feed two people. They accept cards for purchases over $5. Standard choice of adding LTO, salt/pepper/oregano, oil/vinegar, mayo, and hot or sweet peppers to your hoagie. All of the meat was cut fresh to order. The sharp provolone is so good I could cry. Dan's is like the last of an almost extinct species! This is not a slick new deli, it's run by a butcher, Dan, that's worked in this shop since 1952, when he was just a boy. It's one of the only original businesses in fishtown that's not been killed. I hesitated going in for a long time because on the surface; I judged by the looks of the inside of the store. What I discovered was this is THE VERY BEST source for an Italian Hoagie; it's incredible! I planned on just trying one for lunch on my way to the studio but ended up so in love with it, I had to paint half of it (see image uploaded!). Ive enjoyed Dan's fresh made Italian (sweet and hot) sausage. I rarely get in on the day he makes it so I just buy it frozen. He freezes it on the 2nd day, because he makes it fresh but w/o any preservatives, and he'll explain that for sure. This sausage is incredible. The ladies working the register are sweet. Talking to Dan you're whisked away to another era that makes everything seem easy and simple, which is definitely one of the great things about this place. But I guess more importantly is that Dan takes pride in what he does. He has wonderful quality meats and can procure almost anything you need within a day or two if he doesn't have it on hand. So this place is awesome and the owner is great. It was his dads butcher shop before it was his. If you call ahead he will get you a chicken or whatever you need and butcher it for you old style, meaning not messy and awesome!!! He makes a bangtown sandwich or hoagie. It's stumbling upon places like Dan's Food Market that continues to impress me about Fishtown. I've walked by this store a million times on the way to Berks Station but never knew there was a butcher here until I saw a sign posted on the door. Most of the meats are not out on display, so you'll probably have to ask Dan for what you need. He was very nice and took the time to prepare the cut of chicken and ground beef that I wanted. This was the first time I've ever gotten fresh beef grounded in front of me. Pretty cool. I was also able to pick up some onions. Again, they weren't out on display but I just asked him if he had any. Saved me a trip to the grocery store. Dan was overall very accommodating and said if there's ever meat I needed that he didn't have at the moment, he would be able to get it. I just stopped by Dan's today for the first time and I have to say, I'm absolutely ashamed of myself. I've lived within walking distance for about 5 years now and I've been missing out by only going there for the first time today. First, we ordered two ribeye steaks - they don't keep meat in the deli case, so you have to ask but they most certainly can and will cut you fresh steaks! The steaks were beautiful and extremely reasonable as far as price goes - much cheaper than the nearby big grocery stores, and again the cuts were beautiful. While waiting for the steaks, my wife and I decided to order an Italian hoagie to split. Good god, this is easily one of the best hoagies I've had and certainly the best Italian hoagie.
