    50-pound roasted pig.
    Gus S.

After months of talking about it, my friends and I decided to have a pig roast. We researched a few places and came across Cannuli's. I pass this place all of the time on my way to Claudio's and Talluto's, and the meat also looks fresh. So, we ordered a 50 pound roasted pig. I believe the total cost of a 50-pound, deboned and roasted pig was around $250, and boy was it worth every penny. The pork was cooked to perfection. We picked up the pig from the store, and it was ready when they said it would be. It was gutted, deboned, stuffed back in with meat and sewed closed. It was wrapped in tin foil when we picked it up. The seasoning on the pork was delicious. We decided to go with a latin theme and made several latin side dishes. It really worked well with the flavors of the pork. Everyone really enjoyed the pig and after 20 people stuffed their faces, there were still several pounds left over. It was a real amazing meat experience, and will probably become an annual ritual. I highly recommend this place for your meat needs.

    Whole roasted pig

For very special occasions for years, my family has been getting a whole roasted pig. It is to die for! The meat is so flavorful, moist and tender. They give you some au jus with the meat if you like your sandwich with some gravy. Also get some sharp provolone on the side for sandwiches. Their rolls are great too. They'll help you load the pig into the car when you arrive. Your guests will be wowed as it makes a really cool presentation, too. The people working there are also really helpful when trying to figure out what side to order. I think the whole pigs need to be ordered a bit in advance so check their website. Although I do feel a little bad for the piggy, it's just SO good and a nice tradition for special occasions.

60lb Whole roasted pig stuffed with seasoned pork loin. DELISH!!!

Whole roasted pig with super crispy skin, stuffed with pork loin & seasoned to perfection!! Hubby and I always have an end of summer bash, however moving to NJ we were hard pressed to find some of the same items we used to get in Cali, where to begin? Like finding a butcher shop that also roasts whole pigs or a warehouse liquor store like BevMo. After reading up on Yelp we decided to go with Cannuli's and we have gone nowhere else since. The butcher I spoke to was not only helpful with explaining the ordering process and prices he also suggested any catered side dishes I might need. He was pleasant to talk to and I felt really comfortable giving them our business. So I ordered the 60lb whole pig stuffed with pork loin and scheduled to pick up early afternoon the day of the party. Hubby and Mini-Me drove to pick it up and let me tell you, they said and I quote, " IT was the longest and hardest drive they ever had to make! that pig smelled so good it took all the self control they had to not pull over and dig in and ONLY- ONLY because it was wrapped so well for traveling, they knew I would notice!". That says a lot. I have included a picture of the pig before it was dug into by our guests. Cannuli's also give you a gallon jug of the roasting juices and it definitely was appreciated. So if you are looking for a whole pig for you to cook or them, large or small crowd this is the place to go. Also the whole butcher case is loaded with great meat items we also just make the drive to get items for stocking up our freezer and summer BBQ's in general. **** SUPER IMPORTANT--- the pig is gonna be juicy and I mean juicy- so we have found --and what no one tells you.. is how do you keep it all goodness confined in one spot without the juice and pig falling apart and making a mess. We go to BJ's or Costco and got the super heavy duty cardboard long boxes that you get to carry your stuff. Once we got the pig which is all packed on a board like those 6 ft sandwiches.... we just measured the boxes. We cut the middles off of two and the sides completely off of one and then duct tapped them so it was like one big long box with a continuous 2-3 inch side around it. Then we lined the bottom and sides with heavy duty foil- two layers, then added, newspaper on top of foil, then saran wrap around the whole box to hold it all in place and a final 2 layers of heavy duty foil around the whole box, laid the board and the pig in that and put it outside on the table. This wrapping prevents leakage.

Known in simpler times at Cannulli's House of Pork, this is a classic old-school butcher shop where you can pick up parts of any animal you'd like to eat. Known for selling whole roasted pigs ready to go, Cannulli's will also sell you a whole, raw dressed pig -- any poundage you like -- and you can have a manly time charring it over a giant fire in your backyard, with all you man friends admiring your massive hunk of meat. For those with more refined carnivore tastes, have one of the friendly butchers saw a cow's femur into 1.5-inch lengths and roast. Spread that soft marrow on toasted bread for the finest meat butter experience you will ever have. A five-star butcher shop for price, service and selection. This is all commerical-type feedlot beef/pork/chicken -- no grass-fed stuff. Hopefully they will add top-quality grass-fed meat in the future.

My dining companion argued strenuously that pickles have no place on a hoagie but I ignored him lol. I skipped the mayo tho. Surprisingly Dan takes credit cards and Apple Pay, $5 min. He keeps long hours for such a simple sandwich shop. Dan's used to be a butcher & convenience store, maybe back in 1947. I think its a husband and wife that run this place but I wasn't 100% sure. I ordered a large Italian hoagie and woman behind the counter grabbed the roll from the clear bin in front of the counter and the gentlemen sliced the meat fresh for my Italian and added peppers, oil & vinegar and SPO. There are not many places that still operate like a true old school deli and I really enjoyed it. As she handed me the hoagie she asked if I had ever been there before to which I answered "no." No disrespect at all to Heather Thomason, because this really is her brain child. I've loved following her for a few years now and was happy her kickstarter was backed. I really wanted to contribute and fought for it a bit, but it was backed before I made up my mind. I did wrestle with it for a bit, about what package I would get, but I knew it would be logistically hard to support. We walked in and saw a lot of interesting items. Duck Eggs really caught our eye, but we didn't want to carry them around with us. Decided to leave the store, go to ITV for a drink, and come back before they closed at 6:00 PM. Ordered a nice cut of flank steak and the duck eggs. Maybe for a Kangaroo burger later this week? I just love the idea here, where Primal wants to be more interconnected with farms. I'm really into better quality eggs now, for when we make pasta or things like that. Knowing what the animal ate, really helps make a better product when egg is the star.

And although I still haven't gotten around to trying it during that time, I was looking forward to her and Cecille May's commitment to make sustainable, pasture-raised meat more readily available to Philadelphia when they branched out on their own for Primal Supply Meats (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2016/05/31/kensington-quarters-butcher-heads-out-on-her-own/). And when I sampled their offerings at spots like Stargazy, Garage, and Tired Hands Fermenteria it added up to some of the best meat dishes I've had. While they did an amicable job of providing their meats to restaurants and farmers markets, Primal Supply really needed a butcher shop of their own to better prepare Philly for the carnivore cravings that their meats illicit. And when I heard that they were set to open a few blocks away from me in the spot that used to house the old East Passyunk hardware store (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2017/12/15/primal-supply-butcher-shop-east-passyunk/), it lead to some of the best sausages that I've had (and I say this as a Cappuccio's die hard! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cappuccios-meats-philadelphia). the bacon & thyme pork sausage was sweet yet smoky and savory at the same time. And the pork Vindaloo yielded an ample amount of Indian spices and heat. Add in the ability to get beef, pork, chicken, liver, lamb, goat stew, and even pet food, and you'll find a huge variety of options. They also carry local cheeses from the likes of Birch Run Farms, pasta from Severino, and the oppotunity to join their pay as you go Butcher's Club meat program, making it another solid addition to East Passyunk!
