Menu board at entrance

Came in on a Tuesday around 10:30am. This place is hopping. All seating was full and there was a line to order and for pickup. We ordered the spicy biscuit, the basic, a dill cheese bagel and three coffees. Our cashier was efficient in her manner. By the time we ordered the dining area cleared out so we sat at a table. The table we sat at was sticky and needed cleaning-so we did it). The sandwiches came out quickly and were nicely prepared. The coffee (Americano) was so smooth and not bitter. Glad we found this local place.

Maple iced latte

So glad this spot was open on a Sunday afternoon - perfect for post-ski! $6.50 for a 24oz iced maple latte and $2 for a giant cranberry chocolate chip cookie, which is on par for the area. cozy seating area with people working, reading, and chatting. friendly staff and breakfast and lunch menus available as well as baked goods and a few bagel options. loved all the natural lighting as well! would definitely recommend!

Large cold brew at Capitol Grounds Cafe
Bruce K.

I spent a good while in Capitol Grounds this morning, nursing a large cold brew (even though it was barely 60 degrees) and using their wifi for two work calls and some Facebooking. Located in downtown Montpelier around the corner from the State Capitol, this is a busy coffee shop. There is a pretty constant flow of customers coming and going and I had a prime spot near the pickup area to watch. The cold brew was excellent. Good, rich coffee and the service was friendly. Nearly all the breakfast offerings are carbs so I didn't have one of their delicious looking croissants or omelet sandwiches. But they looked good. Not all of the seats have power outlets and I think their wifi password rotates, so check it out before taking a seat and you won't have to move when the battery runs out. South West Burrito $9.50. Small offering and nothing special.
Marvin S.

I had the South West Burrito for $9.50 and was disappointed. First off, it was an extremely small burrito. Inside it was mainly scrambled egg with a microscopic amount of roast beef. My partner had some sort of bagel which tasted better and represented better value for money.

It's a bit overwhelming at first as you're supposed to read the big chalk board menu on the wall and then go to the counter to order your food and then take a table. My partner got an English muffin breakfast sandwich and I got the bánh mì pulled pork sandwich. I've had these from non Vietnamese eateries before and they've been terrible, this one was quite exceptional and delicious. An authentic banh mi usually does not have pulled pork but this was a very nice and respectful tangy fresh twist to a favorite sandwich. My partner mentioned their item was also quite excellent and had notable freshness. Please note food is made to order and they get quite busy so it helps to be patient.Go around or before noon for easy seating!

Offered with pulled pork or tempeh, the crusty baguette, flavorful kimchi and sriracha mayo combined to create quite a tasty sandwich. Served with a small side of ruffled potato chips, it's about 5 dollars more than one would pay at a mom and pop spot in Seattle or SF, but it was as delicious. The Chicken Cesar salad hit the spot, with its warm, thinly chopped chicken. I think the crotons were homemade but I could be wrong. It wasn't out of this world (a zest of lemon and fresh parmesan would do wonders) but it was dressed lightly and was an abundant portion. This cafe has everything going for it and with a few easy upgrades, it could easy be a 5 star experience. Little touches, such as serving meals on real plates and bowls instead of disposals, upgraded bathrooms, rearranged tables, and a clearer and more efficient way to order (the chalk menu inside the entrance creates a bottleneck) would elevate Cafe Noa and make it a true destination for locals and visitors alike. Worth a return visit, for sure.

I'm actually blown away that there isn't a review for this establishment on Yelp. Blown away…read morebecause of how busy it was when I made a pit-stop for much needed caffeine and calories. It was *packed* and there was a "regulated" frenzy lining up to get thy brew and chew. Counting seconds, minutes, and "hours" (just kidding, it moved fast), chatting up everyone and anyone when you've got absolutely nothing to do until it was your turn to find saving grace from one of the grinders spewing life changing atoms of goodness. Everyone was respectful no matter how groggy they looked. And it all made sense when I got to the pivot in the line. There was a sign that sublimely declared all Karens to keep their best behavior or simply be thrown out. I couldn't for the life of me contain my laughter. I was joined by the few I had already bantered with the last 15 minutes. They, as locals, told me that the establishment protected their employees and would gladly enforce that particular placard any day. GOOD. We don't want them around here anyways. It's already a miracle that someone, or anyone, is willing to wake up more than a few hours earlier to serve anyone barely waking up to their senses. It's a privilege to be here and I can't help but be thankful and appreciate the hardworking folks in the service industry. Thank you. Salute.

My love for this place will never wane even though it's already so popular that it gets completely…read moreslammed every day during the period that is winter break for surrounding school systems -- and probably many other times as well. I love that they're socially conscious and really care about social justice and the environment. - They compost.* My pup discovered this after we emerged from a trail next to the back of the bakery. She found all this very scientifically interesting. - They serve in house with reusable metal utensils and plates, which you return to the counter. - They're committed to sourcing organic, sustainably produced flour from a few family-run farms. - Takeout containers (and I feel awful when having to use these at times) are waxed cardboard -- maybe professionally compostable or recyclable, but I suspect not. Still, better than plastic. Eat in if you can. Someday I'll remember to bring my own containers and see if they'll use them. The bread is world class. We've probably tried almost every loaf at this point. They tend towards being traditional styles with robust crusts and a good, slow, cold rise -- breads that take time to make. Our preferences lean towards the sourdoughs, the miche-type loaves, anything with olives, and the potato breads (for those of us with old teeth or missing baby teeth). But everything you could possibly order will be amazing. We loved the beautiful pain d'epi most recently, though the 10 year old (who doesn't have a full set of chompers right now) found it tough to consume without a good dip in Mom's stew at the end of the day. The only version my family cited as more beloved was from Maison Kayser -- yes, a chain, but a very good one where my kiddos literally cut their teeth. Pastries are shockingly good as well, particularly the laminated ones that someone must be getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. to prepare. Chocolate croissants and almond croissants are perfectly layered, generously filled with high quality chocolate (real chocolate, not Nutella!) or almond paste filling that is even good when cold. The "simplest" of pastries (not really at all simple for anyone's whose tried to make these), a plain croissant, will wow a purist. My kiddos love the perfectly frosted maple bun visit after visit. Savory pastries are often filled with beautifully caramelized / browned onions, cheese, and other ingredients depending on the whims of the chefs. Again, I don't think you can go wrong; we certainly never have. There are decent sandwiches and salads on the menu (from the perspective of the spoiled). Nothing is groundbreaking, but they're 200% competent and ingredients are consistently excellent. A recent Harvest Salad, for instance, included fresh and tender butter lettuce, winter squash roasted to tender perfection, nuts and dried fruit in perfect balance. We'd had about 10 different "harvest salads", in the past few weeks in VT at that point, but though this one was more simply designed than many, it was more delicious, given the impeccably fresh, high quality ingredients. We sometimes get here on the earlier side, but never seem able to score a breakfast sandwich, which seems to sell out fast. We like the down-to-earth staff, who smile when they mean it and don't when they don't -- and show fatigue when they need to and ought. I love that the management appears to be humane, opening later than usual when an ice storm makes driving conditions perilous. We recognize some staff members from some years past and we like the continuity a lot. Love the entire picture. All of it. * I just read that all VT households and businesses are required to compost per a state law passed in 2020. Cool! Red Hen seems to have a great sorting system set up, though, with many neat, well maintained bins lined up out back.

It's always been busy when I've gone, but wait times aren't very long and the staff is pleasant. Needless to say, I got home and inhaled my turkey on a baguette. The only thing I think is a little bit of a bummer is the lack of more "traditional" topping options. I like my sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The cafe does not offer tomatoes and only has pickled onions. Would be nice to have a little more choice when building your own sandwich. That said, I'm still a big fan and would get food from there again in a heartbeat.

This trip, we enjoyed a milkshake, Skinny Fries (they were out of poutine), Noah's Ark, and Breakfast Monster. The house bbq sauce was chosen to accompany the fries: not my favorite bbq sauce; the fries were crispy and well salted. I hope to try the poutine on another visit. Noah's Ark was a nice blend of sweet and savory. The sausage was ok, but probably would try another meat choice next time. For pesto lovers, the Monster will really scratch that itch! I haven't been to a Skinny Pancake since I received the devastating no-more-gluten-for-me news, so I was glad to see that they have a buckwheat crepe option for us gluten-free dweebs. I ordered the apple & brie crepe. I was informed that the hash purples go into a shared fryer, so they're not totally gluten-free. I accepted my future stomachache & ordered them anyways, because they've always been my favorite item on the menu. Service was friendly & prompt. Find a table, order at the counter, & they'll bring your food to you. The hash purples were totally delightful, as expected. 5 star color, too. The crepe was unfortunately very underwhelming. It was super thick & the texture was kinda ominous. I didn't end up finishing it. They might just need to tweak their gluten-free batter slightly to get the balance right. I believe in them (: Overall a fun lunch spot in the marvelous capital of Vermont.
