We're out-of-towners doing the tourist thing, and decided to grab a bite near the Molly Brown House. We hit a trendy joint, and there must have been 20 people in line just to get their name on the list for a table. So we headed across the street to Capitol Convenience where we met the most genuinely friendly people working there. We got some great conversation and had some of the best sandwiches ever. I am an older guy and just wanted to comment on this store. This is the by far the best run store i have ever seen. This family runs a tight and professional operation down to the way the floor is cleaned. I am a very frequent customer and enjoy going there. Well only live a block away. Now on the other sider of the coin they are a little pricy, but what is not these days, right I think they pride themselves on what else like the store name says " CAPITOL CONVENIENCE" and as everyone knows you pay for convenience ask 7-11 the inventors /masters of convivence. read more

I called immediately within the same ten seconds I got the notification and their phone is disconnected and sends you to a full voicemail box. My whole life is in that wallet and it could've been recovered and these assholes may have ruined my only chance at getting it back. read more

This is my go to neighborhood corner store. I can get my munchies, locally made beverage all types and random things I may need. The staff is always friendly and overall engaged. It's a nice stop if I have to people that day. read more

It happens every other week. I go to the bathroom and then look over at the toilet paper holder in terror as I realize I've run out of TP yet again. So after I frantically find a suitable one time replacement for TP for this, um, endeavor, I put on my shoes and head over to A-1. I genuinely like coming here. It's the type of store you would expect to find nestled among apartments and restaurants in a city. It's owned by an Indian family who are friendly and kind and, from what I can tell, enjoy being a part of the community. Plus, they let me bring my dog in, so that's a huge plus. Whatever you need, chances are you're likely to find it here. For a small space, they've packed quite a bit of options in the store. Automotive, office, food, pet supplies, mood rings and bongs...er... tobacco pipes. This place will always be my choice for TP emergencies and various other small purchases I make during the week. read more

This place has completely changed ownership and as a result the store is quite different. Not necessarily better or worse but definitely different. The old store was run by an Indian family and had a lot of really random items including bags of a wide variety of Indian food, ponchos, stuffed animals, cookware, pajamas and other quite random things. A-1 has new owners now and the store's randomness has noticeably decreased. But on the other hand, the hours are much longer now (until 2AM many nights) and they made some much needed upgrades. You can actually get fountain soda and fresh coffee now for example. The new owners/operators appear to be young people more in tune with Capitol Hill's youthfulness. But unfortunately they don't think we need as many grocery items as the fresh produce and other groceries have noticeably decreases as well. And I kind of like the idea of knowing, if I wanted, that I could walk two blocks away and buy a convenience store toaster. Oh well. A-1 is still way better than 7-11, and knowing that it's open quite late means I will rarely have to venture the extra two blocks to Colfax. read more

Love this place! It's a block away from my apartment and has saved me on more than one occassion. They have so many random yet useful things. I moved to the neighborhood in September. In 5 months, these guys have supplied me with last minute supplies, including: -Last minute snacks to take to a party -Missing ingredient to make home made salad dressing (vinegar) -Soda, Vitamin Water, etc to quench my thirst or to take to a party -Ice cream for dessert (They have an insanely awesome assortment of Ben and Jerry's ice cream.) -Cough drops for a sore throat -DayQuil and NyQuil packets to get me thru my sickness until I could get to a pharmacy -Chapstick, when I could not find mine. -Frozen dinner when I was too lazy to make my own. Everyone who works at the store is nice, too. The store can get a little pricey. I don't use it for all of my shopping, just for things that I need last minute. You're definitely paying for convenience at this shop, but in the instances above and the ones that are sure to come, that's perfectly OK. read more

Convenient location, easy going staff and a lot of items for sale = my favorite go to place to shop! Plus, when you walk in drunk as hell with only ten minutes until closing time they don't look down on you, but rather they laugh with you at the hilarity of the situation :-) You can almost get anything and everything here - love it I do! Perfect for an inner city store; carrying all your needs and more! You got your milk, your pasta (and sauce) your pool toys for the summer months, paper products, smokes, snacks, eggs, sun glasses, frozen pizza, and of course "water pipes." I like that you can walk in without any clue as to what to make for dinner and come out with a yummy meal plan for a reasonable price - some assembly required. Every now and then they run out of milk but that's the least of their worries with some of these city folk. While sometimes there are interesting people who come in to the store, the friendly faces behind the counter are always polite and will even give you that "WTF?" look when the customer in front of you asks for organic kitty litter...hmm. At least it's good way to share a smile with the great staff! read more

I've been going here for scratcher lottery tickets for the past several years, and they never judge me for coming back day after day even though many of my tickets come up empty. They also happen to have a bit of luck since I've won all my cash for my significant money clip over there recently. Keep it coming! With the new owners, you can expect a freshened interior and exterior. There is a good selection of non-lottery ticket products. You also feel like you're supporting a local owner instead of some corporation (I'm channeling my inner hippie). Stall your judgments until you check out the joint and win a few extra bucks on your lottery ticket investment plan. read more

I don't come in here all the time, but when I do, the people that work here have all been friendly and awesome, regardless of shift. One of the veteran guys plays the best music too. Everything is a bit more expensive than you'd pay for in larger stores, but that's to be expected, and isn't a hindrance because: convenience. There are Amazon lockers inside too, which is great when you want to pick up or return something and not have it pilfered at your apartment. I only wish they'd bring back Santiago burritos. They were my most frequent reason for coming here. The new burritos are gross. read more

So far as I can tell, it seems the nearest grocery store is 1.4 miles away. As I don't want to go 1.4 miles every time that I need a little something: Dove dark chocolate bars, almond milk, Scotch tape, Carmex or toilet paper, I couldn't be happier to have our little local market at the end of the block. Our across the street bodega, staff is always friendly and is great in a pinch when you need something quick. And the Amazon Locker is awesome. Are the prices high? Yep, but you're paying for CONVENIENCE in the city, if you want bargains hit up the Walmart and move back to the suburbs. read more

They close early some days. No real rhyme or reason for what time they decide to close, but don't rely on posted hours. Also they don't answer the phone, so don't call to see if they're open... assuming you can even find the phone number. Super unreliable and disappointing. read more

I would give it ZERO STARS if i could! First off, bought an italian sandwich once, found ROACH EGGS in my sandwich! Second: I paid for a pack of newports, their register said "declined". So i paid cash,, checked my bank statement afterward, and the store did indeed charge me $6.94. So i went to my bank, got a PRINTED statement. Went back to the store, instead of talking to me, the manager (Alex Spiro) called the cops and told me to "fuck off dispute the charge with your bank". Real professionals over there!!! Right next door. The staff are very nice. This place has a lot of little things you don't think you need til you need them. It's cool they carry a variety of sandwiches, some yogurts, frozen pizzas, even prepackaged sliced deli meats in case you run out one and a half sandwiches into your 2 sandwich kitchen adventure. The new owners have really turned this store around - it looks really clean and updated! I love that they carry milk, eggs and bread. Also, love the friendly guys behind the counter.
