I miss driving less than 10 minutes to my Sunday morning class so my Bikram addiction didn't take up half of the whole day. I live in Austin TX now which is just lousy with yoga studios. While I have found one that fits my schedule and my very demanding private checklist, it's a 30-minute drive from where I live. And sure the instructors there are great but I don't feel the homey warmth I got from Radiance. If you need a yoga studio that is not overrun by 20-year-olds*, is old-school hot, challenging, consistent and affordable, this is the place. I miss it :-( *no offense to the youth, but your energy can be exhausting, To me. Personal preference.

How am I the first person to review The Yoga Loft? I barely do yoga…read more That said, I started coming to this studio a couple of months ago, and since then have attended several classes. So while I may not have a good feel for the breadth of this studio's offerings, I certainly have enough experience with the place to share some thoughts. Quick story. For the past few years I've been having some trouble with my back. Nothing serious. Just muscle strain. But my wife was tired of hearing me complain about it, and I was tired of complaining too. Our collective thought was that the stretching and core strengthening of yoga might be just the thing I needed. But I had never done yoga before. And my flexibility was abysmal. Forget about touching my toes, I can barely touch my knees. So my wife found a few local studios that had a gentle yoga class. The Yoga Loft was one of them. And it just so happens that not only did the class fit well into my calendar, this studio just happens to be in the same building as my favorite cheesemonger. Done. And done. So I ran out and bought a yoga mat and some yoga pants. Now I'm doing yoga, and I like it. This class in particular focuses on making sure participants aren't overdoing it. Mary encourages her students to check-in with their bodies periodically, and offers alternatives to the poses just in case things get too intense. I love that. And I love how I feel after each class. I still can't touch my toes. But I think I'm getting closer to my knees. And without a doubt, this class is starting me down a healthier path. Well, at least a path with greater flexibility and maybe core strength. Because the health benefits from the class may be slightly diminished by my lunches at the cheese store next door. Which sometimes include an afternoon beer. Yoga followed by amazing cheese and great beer? That's my kind of exercise program.

Heartspace is the BEST! I had ZERO yoga experience, but was very interested in starting a practice…read more I reached out to Heartspace after several of my coworkers recommended it, and Andrew, the owner, directed me to a 6 week beginners series that was just about to start. I was really nervous to walk into a regular yoga class with absolutely no experience so this was perfect for me! I LOVED the beginner series; Rebecca, the instructor, did a beautiful job teaching proper form and all of the basic poses one should know in order to feel confident walking into any yoga class. She is incredibly knowledgeable about ALL aspects of yoga and can offer you any modifications that you may need. I was so impressed with Rebecca and this series that I did a second round of it! Now, I attend Rebecca's regular Saturday morning flow class and can't say enough good things about it! Yoga has done so many great things for me both physically and mentally in the short time I've been practicing, and I have Heartspace and Rebecca to thank for that! Heartpsace is full of caring and competent people who create a supportive and engaging environment for personal practice and growth. I will continue to be a regular here and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a studio.

The door to the center is located next to the Prescription counter at Hannaford. it's the one at 900 Central Avenue. It's free to join and most of the classes are free as well. The programs are underwritten by Hannaford supermarkets, CDPHP and the YMCA. It's brilliant. By keeping people healthy we can reduce the staggering costs of medical care and health insurance claims. There are also free courses on healthy eating run by Hannaford nutritionist Fran Weiss. You'll find the staff very supportive. The classes are fun. The majority of members are seniors, but they make everyone feel welcome. If this is a template for fitness, I hope more centers like this one will spring up across the region!

Do you want to start exercising, but don't know how or where to get started? The Healthy Living…read moreCenter is the place for you. Located inside Hannaford, you'll find a small, supportive, comfortable place to start working out. To get started with your free (yes, free) membership, just bring in an ID and the person at the front desk will get you all set up and ready to begin your fitness journey. The gym itself has some resistance based machines (If you've ever been to Curves, think of that) if you would like to work on strength and several choices for cardio, including a bike, treadmills, ellipticals, and a rowing machine. And, don't worry; the people working there will help set you up on any of those machines. If doing your own thing isn't your cup of tea, the Healthy Living Center also offers many classes throughout the day and evening, some free and some paid. You can check their schedule on the website and sign up 2 weeks before a class beginning at 8am for the free classes (they clearly label the paid, more advanced classes, which are often around $7/class - so very reasonable). There are spin classes, zumba, HIIT, circuit classes, urban fit, and more. Options are also available for personal training (fee). Instructors are great at providing modifications in classes so that all ability levels are able to participate. The reason I've been a member here for more than three years is partially the amazing instructors, like Regina, but also the amazing community of members the Healthy Living Center has attracted. You'll be welcomed and supported; you'll also find yourself among a diverse client base. People of all races, sizes, ages, and ability levels use the gym here. I honestly can't say enough positive things about this beloved little gym and, guys, it's free - you have absolutely nothing to lose by checking it out.

The heating elements drop down from the ceiling: cool and unexpected. They have vibrant color changing lights that give the place a festive feel. Mirrors cover one wall. Well organized props. Lot parking with some spaces reserved for the studio. I did their $10 for 10 days Black Friday special and enjoyed several of their classes including some excellent unheated yin classes with Cassandra and some flex, flow and power vinyasa classes. I really loved that Cassandra allowed you to rest and meditate in the postures and was not overly talkative during the class. The hottest class I took here was up to 99 degrees. They also have a Bikram style class at 105. The $10 for 10 days special was an amazing value but their drop ins are $30 and their 10 class pack is $269. Their monthly membership is pretty reasonable for $129 if you practice frequently. I'd love to come back to this studio occasionally but don't want to pay so much for a drop in or ten class. If I didn't currently have a lot of passes at other studios right now I'd do their monthly membership as that's definitely worth the price. Experienced instructors. I liked the vibe here a lot. One of the owners was around to greet folks before class for a few classes I attended and was very friendly. The other yoga practitioners here also seemed pretty chill and nonjudgmental unlike some other studios in the area where you find some snobbishness and oneupmanship. Pretty five star experience but subtracting a star for the priciness of the drop ins and 10 class packs. Definitely encourage you to give it a try as their regular new member special is a great deal for four weeks at $39. The owner told me they may be adding Pilates to the schedule. I will keep an eye on their website and may consider the monthly when my passes at other studios expire. I also like that they have classes later in the evening and on Saturday afternoons. Happy that I checked this place out.
