The Greenbush YMCA is a nice facility. It's clean and the staff are always friendly. I have a few things to mention though. I took a few day time spin classes and felt they catered to older members. I am in my early/mid 30's and was one of the youngest in the class. I'm not in particularly good shape but I didn't find the class challenging. I know that many older folks frequent during the morning hours so this isn't meant as a complaint, more as any FYI for people. Sometimes you have to do your own thing in a class to get what you need out of it. I also want to review the pool, again it is clean. I feel the children's swimming lessons are of good quality. I'm kind of half and half on the daycare for babies and toddlers. My older children did fine in similar settings but for some reason my youngest just doesn't like it. One other reason for my rating of 3 are the weekend hours. Closing at 7 is too early. On the few occasions I get there in the evening before they close the facility has a full basketball court and plenty of people working out. I assume the numbers are lower than other times of the day but for some of us we don't get time to get to the gym until the rest of the daily hustle is addressed. There are few gyms in Rensselaer County and unfortunately none of them are open past 7pm. read more

As far as public gyms go this is one of the worst. First, the basketball courts are always filled with people who think they're professional basketball players so you can't enjoy a fun game. They're fights all the time at the courts and the staff doesn't do anything about it. Also, the public pool is always overcrowded and dirty. In addition, I have seen some disgusting things in the locker rooms. The worst part here is definitely the staff. I was using the weight room and I was only using smaller weights and one of the employees kicked me out because " I wasn't taking it seriously enough". I then went to the track and started running and the employee actually followed me around. It's a shame because this gym has so much potential, but it's ruined by the clientele and employees. read more

I've been getting to know all of the different local branches, and this branch offers a lot. Fabulous classes, reliable childcare, lovely pool, a clean environment, great gym equipment, friendly staff...except for a few individuals at the front desk. Whether it be on the phone or in person, I am reliably treated as a total inconvenience. The only reason I make a point of this is because other members and ex-members I've met have mentioned the same thing, so I must conclude this is a regular part of the Greenbush Y experience. If you can ignore that, it's a great place. read more

I'm sorry to give such a low rating - I would like give two and a half stars. Over the past year membership at this Y has greatly increased. The main issue is that they need to step up the cleaning now that it is more crowded. The last time I went in the sauna, it was filthy. The cracks between the benches and the floor were caked with mud and grime. I have no idea how it could have become so dirty in there. It was gross. I do not want to go back there now and it had been one of the highlights of the gym for me. I have had to ask an attendant to remove dirty tissues from the sauna. I also asked an employee to remove a large wad of hair and scum from the whirlpool. I was treated to a less than friendly attitude both times -- but this is only in the pool area. The other staff are very nice. Also - with the increase in membership, the hallways when you enter the gym have started to stink intermittently. On a positive note, the gym does not have broken machines. (They could use a few more elliptical machines and fewer arc trainers.) The women's locker room is clean.The staff outside of the pool area are always welcoming and seem concerned when there is a problem. However, I'm not sure I will continue my membership. I do not think for $50 per month, I should have to flee the sauna in fear. To let it get that dirty shows negligence. I want to give them another try so will update. I hope things improve. read more

I've been going here for a few years and this is a mixed review. The gym area is spacious, well equipped and usually very clean. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. There's a wide variety of equipment; free weights, TRX, lots of cardio, kettle bells, Bulgarian weight bags, etc. The equipment is repaired pretty quickly when a machine breaks down. The pool is almost like it's run by a different organization. The water is usually dirty and smelly. You can usually see softball size wads of hair floating around. It's not unusual to get a piece of hair in your mouth or snagged on you hand or watchband. Although there are many signs posted, almost no one showers before getting in the pool, including people coming out of the sauna and steam rooms, as well as staff teaching classes and the people taking classes. At the Bethlehem Y, a guard will occasionally ask someone to shower and staff teaching classes almost always shower. Not here. The guards are almost always attentive and alert. The pool itself is large, but almost almost all the lane lines are so stretched out that they sway into the lanes, making them narrower. The deck is kept clean and there are an ample supply of kick boards, pull buoys and flippers. Overall, it's a really nice facility. If the aquatics staff cleaned the pool up, it would be a great facility. read more

Best Y ever. Take the spin classes. The instructors like Karen, Claudia, and Lisa are amazing. They'll make you work, but you'll be in the best shape of your life. The fitness center was totally redone the last time I was there. New flooring, weights, machines, etc. I moved out of the area and was sad to leave it behind. read more

All I want to do is swim. Only the Y has the pool. If only they would STAFF IT! For $50.00/month, I'm only able to swim two/three times a month due to there VERY LIMITED lane availability. They ALWAYS have some bouncy class or something going on where lap swimming is not allowed. So my schedule and theirs RARELY meet, and when it does, they have two of six lanes shut down. It's called WORK! Teach the young life guards that sometimes they have to quit FLIRTING with each other in the back room, and actually sit in the stand and watch folks swim like their PAID to do. Who supervises these young "life guards" ?? Oh well... I fired the Y tonight, but still have no place to swim... sigh... read more

I've only been once so maybe I'm being a bit critical but... I don't recall dunking my head or getting water in my eyes but they burned half the day (even after returning home to shower) from the chlorine. I waited until the next day to wash my suit and after the 2nd wash it still smells like chlorine. I think the facility is clean but don't have anywhere else to compare it too. I wouldn't walk around without flip flops though. I have started aquatic therapy with an East Greenbush physical therapist who uses the pool at the EG-Y for their sessions. I read others mentioning all the people bobbing in the "free swim area" and what they could've encountered was a class. My p/t available hours are M,W,F 11:15-12. T & Th are in the evening. I went on a Monday 11am and it was busy (the whole facility). A little too crowded for me to use the hot tub after also. No other options over here for indoor pool which my doctor suggested as exercise for my health issues/fibromyalgia. read more

I like this gym because they offer a Veteran discount on their membership. The upstairs workout room is great, they have tv's located in good spots. It can get crowded after work (5 PM and on). It can also get crowded with little teenies from Columbia HS which can get annoying because they just stand in the way and mess around, floor staff usually participates. The workout room is always clean. The women's locker room is a decent size, wish it could be a bit bigger as you can be hitting elbows with someone in the locker next to you when a class gets out. Plenty of parking. The pool and sauna are awesome. Plenty of classes and family activities. read more

It's a nice facility with a lot to offer...but still over-priced. For $90.00 a month, a family can join. Included in that membership is access to the pool, adult fitness classes and they gym/track. That would almost be reasonable except the children's programming is really lacking. The children's programs that are offered all come with additional fees. Ridiculous. With the exception of swim lessons, these classes should be included with membership. read more

I visit this Y as a guest when I am in town visiting family. The facility is clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. The weight room and/or fitness room is huge, well laid out and has a great variety of very new equipment. Really hard to find anything wrong with this area of the Y. The track above the gym is great - so much better than running on a treadmill. Ghe basketball ciurst are great as well. Yes, it can get busy at times, but that is what the Y is all about. It is a gym for everyone. Just go and get fit. It is great. read more

Great summer camp program for kids. Facilities are clean and were recently upgraded. The gym equipment is good with a variety off machines. Great aerobics program. Love the instructors they bring in. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Good bang for the buck. We signed up for the family program. read more

Not what you expect. The gym is a poor collection of run down machines, many often broken. There's not enough variety compared to a $10/month PlanetFitness. If you join for the pool and expect your kids to use it, think again. Most of the pool is filled with either people doing 100 slow laps in a lane, or morbidly obese oldsters bobbing up and down like giant corks, hoping to gleam a calorie or two of exercise points. Heaven forbid your kids just want to splash around and have fun. They are relegated to basically floating and are constantly told not to bother the angry old people nearby. The help desk and staff( with a few notable exceptions) have attitudes and can't be bothered to get off their phones to answer a question. Summer camp for the kids is very expensive for what they do with them. My kids were often bored, put into a gym to watch old disney movies for 2 hrs stretches when the staff hadn't planned the day properly. Don't join, you'll regret it. read more

Although it is expensive compared to the other area offerings, The Y is the only one with a pool-sauna-whirlpool available. The staff is friendly and the facility is relatively clean. Peak time is 5-7 PM as expected but it is well laid out and plenty of room...except for the first few weeks in January when many are fulfilling their New Year resolutions. If the teenagers would put down the cellphones while they are using the machines things would be great! Instead they sit and text. read more
