Capital One Direct converted my online MMA account to a Savings Now account. My international ATM withdrawal fees used to be $0 + 0% + partial refund of foreign bank's fees. Now it's $2 + 3% + no refund. The customer service reps are rude and condescending, as well. Chase has much more professional, courteous customer service reps. Capital one 360 produced incorrect tax forms for me while submitting the correct one to IRS, triggering a nightmare of auditing. I had to endure days of stress and take time off to handle the matter. Worse still, Capital one 360 refuses to compensate me for my time and lost income. Very irresponsive and arrogant customer service. Stay away from it! read more

I switched to capital one 360 very recently. I closed my other bank account. I had a paper payroll check until my direct deposit gets set up for the following payday. They put a hold on my payroll check. I called and tried to see if they would release it because I need my paycheck. I have never had a hold on my payroll check via any other bank.I was told there was nothing they could do. When I stated that I had never had a bank put a hold on my payroll, the rep told me I was welcome to close my account after my check clears. I said "that's not what I asked Genius". How on earth is suggesting I close my account a solution or even an attempt at customer service? Great job Capital One. read more

I was a carry-over ING customer who has stayed with Capital One due to the high interest rates, and that I live in an extremely rural part of New Hampshire, so the banks and credit unions out here aren't exactly generous with their savings (can you say 0.03% interest) and checking interest rates. I have a small business account and a personal account. I also have a business credit card (Spark card) as a personal Visa from Capital One. I could go on forever, I probably have 6 or 7 stories, but I will save you the details. Let me just give you an idea of the level of incompetence through only one story. "I opened a small business account by going through the ridiculous cycle of proof-of-residency, proof-of-citizenship and proof-of-business entity. BEFORE I opened it, I checked with two people at Spark Business that outside-of-U.S. checks would be honored, as 6 of my 7 clients are not U.S. When I got my first paper check from a Canadian company and couldn't mobile-deposit it, I called Capital One. They could not figure out why it wouldn't cash. I commented that it was a Canadian check paying my in U.S. Dollars and was told "Well it can't be that", and I agreed. Eventually I decided to mail it to St. Cloud MN which is an option for you. I went to check my account over the next 10 days and finally called them to figure out why it hadn't posted. I was told that the check was already in the mail back to me because they won't cash any checks drawn on any foreign bank. I was so speechless that the person on the phone asked if I was still on the phone. Even more amazing is that they told me that if I can go to a Capital One bank to deposit (closest one for me is 650 miles away in NJ) that they could cash it - but not at their home headquarters of Capital One in St. Cloud - go figure that one? So being pissed-off but not stupid, I opened an account at Bank of NH and they will cash all overseas checks with no fee, and then I transfer my money back into my big interest Money account back at Capital One. Their rates are exceptional, their credit cards have no fees for international charges (which I do a lot of), and they have a lot to like. They are so incredibly incompetent however that you will find yourself checking on-line to see the exact difference between an imbecile and moron. If you are patient and use them to your advantage, you will be just fine. If you have anything, and I mean anything, out of the ordinary, you will be mis-informed, mis-directed, and completely confounded by them. Accept the frustration of a company that has no systems to train or inform their employees and get the benefits you can get.... read more

Slow, incompetent, irritating, and crappy. These words describe what they have been like. The only reason I still have an account with them after all of this is because I don't have many other options that fit my current needs. The following series of events is real; however, certain details have been omitted for obvious privacy reasons (for instance, you're not going to learn my PIN or what kind of debit card I have with them.) Event 1: Lost my debit card. Took a very long time for them to send me a new one. Event 2: Got new card, BUT, the website would not let me log in to activate my card (keep in mind that I had changed my password 5 min. before I tried to log in). Event 3: Another failed log in attempt. Called them; got transferred several times (at least 10), their robots are very loud, they asked me all sorts of crazy questions about family members I've never seen in my life and objects that I don't have, and they had me change my password again. Call time was at least 1 hr. Event 4: Still can't log into the website! Called again, more screaming robots, more incompetent people to talk to and get transferred from/to, more crazy questions, more wasted time. Event 5: STILL can't get in! Called again, screaming robots, incompetent people, crazy questions, wasted time, but at the end of the call, I found out that my account was affected by a massive technical problem that they were working on fixing. After a couple of times of me asking, they let me activate my card over the phone. Event 6: Card is activated, BUT, I don't have a PIN! Thought maybe I had one, tried out what I thought it was at an ATM, didn't work. Darn. (You'd think I'd have gotten a PIN right away when the card was activated.) Event 7: Tried two other possible PIN numbers at same ATM. Nope! Got an error message "too many bad PIN attempts". Realized I must not have a PIN yet, thought getting one would get rid of the bad PIN tries. Event 8: Got my PIN, thinking that would fix everything. They didn't tell me that getting a PIN wouldn't fix the bad PIN tries. Event 9: Went shopping today, but the darn card wouldn't work! Called them a-freaking-gain, FINALLY got informed that the bad PINs were not fixed, got it fixed (I think). Wish me luck tomorrow getting lunch and some last-minute Christmas gifts. I have been a customer since 2003, and have never really needed to use customer service before today. My son is 18 and has his first personal banking account with Capital One 360. I have 2 personal accounts and 2 Money accounts for my 16 year old children. My 18 year old set up a bill pay to automatically send me $75 payment towards his car payment every 2 weeks. The checks took forever to receive, and I received them was past his scheduled due date. The $75 was immediately removed from his account for each of the checks sent prior to them being cashed. Because of the erratic arrive, we bought him his own checkbook and he began paying that way and canceled the bill pay feature. At that time I noticed that one of the bill pay checks that he had already paid for was never received. We waited a couple more weeks, and I still didn't receive it. We called today, and we had the lady Sue on speaker. She said that the only way for him to reissue a check or cancel is to pay $25 stop payment fee. We argued that this was a service that capital one offered and that they debited the money from his account but never paid the payee he designated, so he shouldn't have to pay a stop payment fee, as all he wanted was for capital one to direct the $75 that he had already paid to the recipient. Sue was very rude and told us that it is not their responsibility when a check doesn't arrive, as thed dont personally walk the check to the door. But they already helped themself to the money in his account and are holding it hostage unless he pays a $25 fee to them. In theory they could credit his account back the $75, and let the check float out there, and if I ever did receive it, the worst that could happen is that I would cash it and it would come out of his account at that time, right? So why pay $25? Sue refused to tell me her immediate supervisors name, telling me she is the studder-studder 'um customer service manager of customers" and she doesn't have a manager because she is a manager and she doesnt have a supervisor because she is a supervisor. She then told us that they would charge him $25 and if they were able to stop payment on the check, he would 'not be charged $25". I asked for this in writing, and she refused and said the call was being recorded so they don't have to put anything in writing. Then she said she was hanging up because she was ordered to evacuate the building. I will be closing ALL Capital One accounts after this experience and telling everyone I know to do the same. A bank practicing extortion is not something I am going to get involved in. read more

I had been a customer since 2003 and today when I needed to wire transfer MY money out to make an investment, I was told that Cap 1 could only wire transfer to an Escrow company and only if I was buying a property. They would not wire transfer to my personal bank account that had been associated with the Cap 1 account. Instead was told they only way I could get my money was to ACH the money to my personal bank account, which by the way would take 3-4 days. This is seriously caused a huge problem and I might lose the opportunity of the investment that I wanted to make. I would NEVER recommend Capital One. read more
