I bought my Roland digital piano from Capital Music years ago and have been so very happy with it. I was an acoustic piano snob until the day I walked into that store! But now I'm in a band and needing something more portable. I went in very close to closing time one Saturday, and Guiseppe was absolutely wonderful. He answered all my questions and helped me choose the perfect Roland keyboard to rent for an upcoming gig. I came back and rented one again before deciding to buy one of my own. Each time, the staff was super-nice, made sure I had all the accessories I needed, helped me put it in the car, etc. Once I'd made my buying decision, the Roland I wanted was on back-order, but Guiseppe called me as soon as they had one available and held it for me. Thank you, Guiseppe!!! For those reviewers who say they were "ignored" when they came into the store . . . Capital Music is not a furniture store, and I have always appreciated that about them. Some of us who come to test out pianos are a little embarrassed by our skills and would rather plunk around in private and not have someone hovering. If you need assistance and no one is handy, go find them. I promise they're around. They know their stuff and they do a great job. Second time visiting this store this past weekend and was ignored again. First time I went in it was a few months ago and I wanted to look around cause I was interested in buying a digital piano. I wasn't even greeted nor approached. I left without buying anything...still ignored upon leaving. This past weekend, I wanted to give them another chance and brought my husband along, this time looking to buy a grand/baby grand piano. Still was not greeted upon entering and was outright just looked over while the sales people were greeting other customers with kids. The only time I was acknowledged was when it was 5 minutes before closing and one person asked if I needed anything (hinting that they were closing). Capital is closed on Sundays, but when I peeked through the windows on a dreary Sunday afternoon, the man waved me in. Capital is what most would picture in their minds when thinking of a piano store. It's got that polite silence that most musical instrument stores ironically have. It's got that new-piano smell. Don't ask...it's just a certain kind of smell that can't be described. The store also has a nice variety of keyboards, digital pianos, and acoustic pianos. They carry the Roland brand. While I'm not currently in the market for a piano, I might go here if I was. My real reason for dropping by was to peruse their sheet music selection, which was ample and varied. I was pleased to see a mix of contemporary and classic, bubble gum pop and the serious stuff (Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky). Capital also offers lessons for all ages. They are adamant about a teaching method that creates a fun learning experience. They want kids to flock to the piano the way they flock to sports. I have to add something else positive about Capital Music Center: my oldest daughter left her piano music bag with music books, her practice flash drive, etc at the NXNW South Austin location. Solely armed with Capital Music Center's name being on the bag, plus my daughter's first name, some really kind employee at NXNW named Michael made the effort to call Capital Music Group and let them know they'd found her bag but didn't know anything more than the kid's first name. Then someone at CMC named Britt was also incredibly kind and undertook to track down who the kid could possibly be based on their student lists and gave me a call. Those two guys are some good people who need to be appreciated! So, in wanting to write a note to Britt's boss to let them know what a great employee they've got, I did a Google search for who was the store manager, and it turns out it was him! My 6 year old daughter has been taking piano lessons here from Catherine for a semester. As a musician myself, I am always interested to observe how teachers go about instilling the fundamentals. I have been thrilled with the results in the short time we have been there. The focus on the basics of note recognition has been great. I bought a digital piano here a couple of years ago.. TIP: Buy USED Laid back staff were glad to see me getting an older piano off their hands, and I was glad to get a good price. They have a nifty software system of lessons, but don't know how you can individualize a set system when I want to go straight to whatever I like and want to learn how to play it, so great for beginners, not so great for just past beginner. Having taken lessons before for 1 hour, their 30 minute sessions wouldn't be enough for me...and don't know if I can afford 1 hour a week with them. Again, good deal on older digital piano. A good starting point if you're in the market to buy but don't want to make the big $$ commitment on something fancy. read more

My daughter was a student at Capital Music Center for at least 5 years, and every single day I took her there the owners acted it was the first time they saw me. Like - literally they acted like they had no idea who we were every.single.time. Not that I particularly care to be recognized, but my daughter was a little put off by the unfriendliness of the owners. The teachers were awesome but all seemed unhappy and sad. The overall environment did not seem conducive to a happy work place. Also overbearing parents seem to have way more input on how the recitals were handled. The first time I wandered in here, there was a workshop going on for piano teachers. This store is one of Austin's gems. Sadly, the owner Ron, passed away suddenly last year, but I think he would be proud of how well the business has continued. The manager Britt is about as knowledgeable and talented a music salesperson as you will ever find. He is the one that talked us into the Roland digital piano 8 years ago and we have been delighted with it - so many benefits over our old acoustic piano. Our daughter has learned on the Roland with Catherine as her teacher. Catherine is just fantastic, and has taught her with an emphasis on theory and dynamics that I think a lot of teachers skip. I believe our daughter has become an accomplished pianist at a much faster rate than we expected, due to the combination of the benefits of learning on a digital piano and a high quality teacher. A big shout out to Ron, a very affable and humorous owner of cap music. My partner & I went to their centre one lazy Saturday afternoon to enquire on their piano lessons and were pleasantly bowled over by Ron. He literally spent 2 hours with us going through the course they run for adult beginners and occasionally played for us some short bursts of the piano. He also narrated his story of falling out of love of piano as a child and then falling right back in after discovering new and fun ways of learning music that is not available in traditional music schools. Loved his personality and I would highly recommend visiting this centre at least once and calling out for Ron. TIP: If you are beginner, on a budget, looking to buy a digital piano, buy used. Apparently digital piano drop their value as soon as taken out of the showroom by at least 1/3. So buy used whenever possible. What I like about Capital Music is the friendly, helpful people. My teacher encourages pursuit of the type of music I enjoy...so I have played rock and roll, blues and jazz. I was looking specifically for piano music I could play at my church. They had a great selection of a wide variety of piano music that was well-organized and up-to-date. I selected a few books to try out and sat down at one of the Rolands to play through a few pieces. The owner of the store came over and visited with me for a while - he was very friendly and knowledgeable and I could tell he really cares about kids getting a good music education. Two weeks ago I decided to go to Capital Music Center because I needed a metronome and I wanted to talk to a live human (as opposed to reading how-to articles online) about what a metronome is and how to use it and discuss which metronome would be best for my needs. Specifically, I was looking for an old-fashioned "real" metronome I could take with me and that wouldn't annoy me like the electronic apps you can find online. Britt, who is the manager of Capital Music Center, helped me out. Basically, I accosted him with a thousand questions about music theory, history of metronomes, and music learning techniques and he answered all of my questions, and then some, leaving me confident I was purchasing the right metronome for my needs. After two weeks of breaking in my metronome, I can confirm that Britt was right on all accounts. The metronome I bought works great, is convenient as heck, and not annoying in the least. Even my guitar teacher was impressed with the quality of the metronome, as well as by the music theory concepts I had learned from talking to Britt. So, truthfully, while I was intimidated by the $20,000 price tags attached to the pianos on display, Britt was as down to earth as could be (even kinda shy and reserved a bit) and just really cool to talk to. He knows way more about music than he lets on. He is a smart guy, studied, insightful, and totally well-worth the trip from wherever you live up/down to Allandale just to talk to him. He's good with the business end of things, too. He fielded questions and completed transactions from a number of customers while I was looking around in the shop, and he did it with grace and style. Overall, I'm just really impressed by Britt and with the product I purchased. I definitely plan to return to Capital Music Center to purchase more music accessories and to check out what types of music lessons and services they offer. read more

I purchased a music book from this place and tried to return it for store credit two days later. This place refused to accept the return, claiming the book was "worn". The only worn spot was where it had sat on the shelf too long at their store. The book cost $20, so I figure their profit is $10. Apparently a long time customer is worth less than ten bucks to this place. If this is their attitude about music books what would happen if there was a problem with a piano or other instrument? My son just started taking piano lessons at Capital Music Center and loves it! Before having a digital piano my son dreaded practicing and going to lessons. It was a daily battle. Now that he has in instructor who he likes and a digital piano, he can't get enough. He plays before school, immediately after school, and often right before bed.
