Chicken Chow Mein. I enjoyed it.
M M.

From where I live it takes two-and-a-half hours to get to Albuquerque, which often means arriving after prime lunch hours. With kids in tow that's problematic and Grants has become more of a lunch option for us. But what's in Grants, man? Well, I've gotten a few leads on old standards and lately we've been taking that last exit into town off the interstate. From the street, Canton Cafe doesn't look like much and entering the restaurant might deter you further but it's worth a shot. Frankly, I found the inside rather dingy. It's other-era quaint and could trigger childhood traumas of eating out with your grand folks. I guess that's part of the charm. I like the big windows. The booths are okay. The middle area is unappealing. On weekends the lunch buffet goes up in price to around $10 not including a drink. For kids, it's a few bucks cheaper. I didn't get the buffet but my kids did and they brought a few extra egg rolls which were good. When I asked the waitress for sweet and sour sauce for my own egg rolls, I was directed to get it myself at the buffet. Okay. The egg drop soup was old school, more watery than thick and served with crackers. My wife had Mongolian Beef which was different than I've ever had it. It was prepared with a lot of bell pepper and not green onion. The taste was good but it wasn't what I expected. I had Chicken Chow Mein which is not lo-mein and is served with crispy noodles. This was exactly what I wanted and I loved their crispy noodles. When chow mein is served over hard round crispy noodles like the ones served here, the noodles start to absorb the sauce and that's when things get good. Yum. I liked my entree. It was not expensive and ran about $40 for the four of us for lunch. Overall it was good. I'm not in the biggest hurry to return but it's something I'd try again.

Hobbit size rice for an meal. $16.00 get you that. It's the smallest container.

Their orange chicken is probably the best they have, but that's not too good either.

Native Grill and Meats

We're from California and used to having tons of food options, but I had never actually tried fry…read morebread before. We were just passing through Gallup and needed a quick lunch. We found this spot on Yelp and I'm so glad we stopped! We got the fry bread (sandwich) and it completely surprised us. I usually think lamb is too gamey, but this wasn't at all. When I brought it out, my husband thought it was beef at first because of how mild it tasted. The portions are huge. HUGE! One taco was seriously the size of a medium pizza and somehow we still finished it. If you're taking it to go like we did, eat it within 5 to 10 minutes so it doesn't get soggy. They also have free broth and honey inside which was such a nice touch and made it even better. Dipping the fry bread in the broth was a nice touch. Like a lighter consomé. Try it with the honey, too! We did with the remaining fry bread as a bit of a dessert. The best part though was the woman working there. She was so kind, answered all my questions, explained everything, and even gave me a magazine about Gallup. If you want something authentic and filling, definitely stop here.

I've had native food a few times here and there but never in an actual sit-down restaurant setting…read more The lady who was working was extremely nice. I wanted to try everything but settled for the lamb stew and the navajo burger. Like other reviews stated, portions really are HUGE. The broth was even self serve in a hot pot out on a counter which is pretty cool. Super nice on a 10° day. I wasn't sure but it seems like native cooking is very light on additional seasonings as my food wasn't as salty as I usually prefer. Which I guess might be a turn off to some but if that's what traditional cooking is then... yeah. The navajo burger actually had enough flavor from the patty. I loved the fry bread. The broth was amazing, I just wish it were a little more salted but that's something easily fixed. Oh I almost forgot. I guess my brain blocked out the trauma of it but New Meixco is supposedly well known for their chilis and this place has some fire chili. literally. roasted green chilis. but yeah it was painful. I couldn't take it. Definite must for any big spice head. Highly recommend broadening your horizons, trying something new, and supporting a locally owned business!
