And here we are. 21 minutes later and nearly half an hour and finally the magical water appears. Weird they charge for water in Italy but I'm cool with that honestly. About to chow down. Honestly the food is nothing really to write home about. Unless you're stopping by and was in the area, it has a more diverse selection of meals but roughly the same as every other tourist haunt. Get your booty into the ghettos and taste some real food. If you're looking for food, in a convenient and decorative setting that's kind of where it ends. Looking for water? Convenience store and drinking fountains.. don't bother ordering it here. Asked them to leave the menu so I may order more. Seems as though they are part ninja. Stole my menu. Honestly, the food here wasn't the most memorable for us, but the service was definitely friendly, fast, and great overall! Given our experiences in Rome thus far (where restaurants expect us to order drinks apart from water), we decided to start off with a simple lemon soda. We then ordered an appetizer of fried Roman artichokes and smoked salmon rocket salad. I found the artichokes to be mediocre. Though they were fried to a perfect golden crisp in appearance, it wasn't really that crispy nor fragrant. The smoked salmon salad, however, was really good! The portion of smoked salmon was very generous (you can literally see it filling the entire surface area of the plate), and there was a ton of cheese, walnuts, and rocket greens. We then also got two mains - the carbonara, and the cacio e pepe. Both kind of tasted the same? They were just really heavy with the parmesan. The carbonara had some interesting fragrant bacon/pork belly bits, but both dishes were not memorable. That being said, the server was always very friendly and never failed to greet us with a smile. We even received free limoncellos on the house! When we left, the waiter also graciously gifted us with lollipops haha. The restaurant is amazing at marketing - they actively push you to leave reviews on their TripAdvisor site. It's pretty smart, for what they lack in food quality, they definitely make up for in service! I went online searching for a highly recommended restaurant near our hotel here in Rome. All in the arrows pointed to Cantina e Cucina. We made our way 2 km to our destination and there was a lineup..down the street..around the corner... and down the alley. I hopped in line thinking that there is this lineup for a reason. Time passed quickly because we started up a conversation with the people behind us and because the hostess brought out small cups and bottles of Prosecco for the people in line. A nice treat on a hot night. On to the food Deep fried artichokes. 10/10. Fantastic Caprese salad. 10/10. Fresh ingredients make all the difference Pasta with meatballs. 10/10. Walking up a small incline to this homey, close to the sights Romanesque setting, you get a feel the food is going to be good and authentic. The greeter understands a wide array of backgrounds and people types as you walk in to a tourist like location but with a staff that is very Italian and welcoming. They ask "where are you from?" and precede to sit you and welcome you to Italy. From there, my wife and I sit to look at the food menu. My first thought is "pizza" and "pasta", so that's what we settled for, our first meal in Rome. We ordered Cacio E Pepe Pizza, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and Grilled Veggies as a healthy third option. The pizza: 4.2/5. Thin style Roman fire brick pizza. Fantastic mix of cheeses, fresh thin dough that was cooked with that light crisp you want but not overdone, and massive portion. Spaghetti and Meatballs: 4.5/5. Fresh tomato based sauce. Amazing homemade noodles. Flavorful and large meatballs. One area of improvement would be slightly more sauce, in my opinion. Grilled veggies were well cooked and aided in our main two dishes. Decided to visit this place since it was close to our air bnb and got high reviews. Left wishing I never came to this restaurant. The service was great but the food experience was not. We ordered the fried calamari. Thinking since we were in Rome we would get authentic food, the calamari came out and it was frozen breaded calamari that was simply fried up. I ordered the gnocchi with clams. The amount of clams was nice. However a lot of clam shells were broken and pieces were in the pasta. Every other bite, I was chewing on clam shells. That was not the worst part. I thought I was chewing on a spinach stem that would not break down. After spitting it out, it turned out to be a green rubber band in my pasta. To say the least I was done with my meal after that. The server was very apologetic and didn't charge me for my meal. But to be chewing on a rubber band was unacceptable. We were looking for an Aperitivo which isn't as popular in Rome as other places in Italy. This one seemed to have mentions of Happy Hour so We checked it out, glad we did. The aperol spritz was 5€, but as we were asking about Aperitivo/ Happy Hour, they said "we'll bring you some little things to eat". There were little toothpicks of olives and tomatoes, homemade potato chips, and mini pieces of cheese and anchovie pizza (very small potion, light bites as an Aperitif should be). We ordered a second round of spritz and a second little plate came out to our delight! The AC inside in the back was the best we've had in Rome thus far (it's July, so that's important). I would venture to say this was the best meal I had in Rome. So much so that I couldn't walk afterward. We got there around 4:00 and it was packed, but we managed to get a table. By the time we got our food, the line was out the door and around the corner. I don't think it had much to do with it being in a high tourist area, but rather, I think the food speaks for itself. I think if you go at an off hour, you'll be fine. What's great is that they don't abide by the Italian after lunch closing hours (3-6) so you can come whenever. We got the spaghetti and meatball. All I can say is, WOW! Completely worth the 15 minute wait to get in. Do not be daunted by the line outside the restaurant to get in because (there's good reason people are willing to wait!): 1) they serve you a glass of complementary Prosecco while you're waiting, and 2) the food is SO worth the short wait outside. The servers who helped us were very friendly, and spoke English very well. However, the real star of the show was the food. Holy cow! I'm still daydreaming about their spaghetti and meatballs. I thought my ravioli was amazing! I never stopped eating it and cleaned the whole plate. I am not sure that it exactly lived up to all the reviews, although we did come for lunch. I am not sure if that makes a difference but the only time you can get in without waiting for 30 mins or more is at an off time. However, the salad was not very good and the salmon salad has pounds of smoked salmon on it. Not my thing particularly, but if it is yours you would love it.
