For a cozy fall activity outside of downtown Chicago, head to the Beer Garden at Cantigny Park in Wheaton! I spent some time walking through the beautiful park and gardens before grabbing a beer and pizza and listening to live music outside. It was such a relaxing way to spend an evening after work, especially once the fall weather started rolling in. I went solo, but this would be a great casual date night or a fun spot to meet up with coworkers after work.

Veterans of the 1st Engineer Bn had a stop here as a part of their annual reunion. They are a part of the 1st Infantry Division "The Bid Red One" and their museum resides here. Cantigny is working on recognizing the real Original Team Lioness who were the first US military females to conduct operations in a combat zone. Contrary to proven false reporting my another service and the fake TV show these women made history and represented this country with the highest of standards. The parks and museums within Cantigny are amazing, peaceful and beyond beautiful. Excellent for picture taking and would be perfect for a first date or date lunch.

We revisited Cantigny specifically for the 1893 World's Fair exhibition commemoration. It was fun to see the souvenir map of Jackson Park and several edible items that date back to that historic Chicago event highlighted among the gardens. Summer flowers are in full bloom but suffering a bit from all the rain and intense heat this year. The next big event here looks to be the Lt. Dan Band concert.

A nice short trip from the city with family friendly atmosphere. Walking grounds, gardens and museum to check out.

We had a great time visiting with family at the Cantigny Cocoa Cabanas a few days before Christmas. There are only a few cabanas by the outdoor skating rink & they are cute A frame structures with a fireplace inside & a fire pit outside with seats for 10 people. Each cabana has a server & you order foods & drinks (alcohol & non-alcoholic) & the hot cocoa is free. Kids & adults alike will enjoy this experience. Cabanas are $100-$300 for a 2 hour period & there is a $150 minimum food/beverage purchase. The kids had pizzas & chicken tenders & fries & adults had beer, espresso martinis, margarita & mules. It's pricey, but worth it for a holiday splurge for groups of 10. The kids ages 6-11 loved it.

Loved the theme of "Wicked" for the experience! Listening to the music from the movies and the choreographed displays while walking thru the park was breathtaking! Add the smell of fires burning, the fresh snow, and the laughter of children - and i was transported to my childhood in MN. My only feedback was that there were areas that didn't get cleared, so they were inaccessible to the public. As they were listed in the attraction, I was disappointed to not be able to experience them. Especially when there was nothing at the beginning letting us know that parts were closed.

I have been to Cantigny many times over the years and have never been disappointed. We visited during the Tulip Sip and Stroll. There is not an admission fee, but parking was $16. It is less expensive during the week. The tulips were in full bloom and gorgeous. There were many opportunities for photo ops. The grounds are well maintained . The museum is a great place to indulge in history and when done , visit the tanks located on the outside grounds. We do not come here often enough to enjoy the grounds.

We went here for the Christmas light display the day after Christmas and enjoyed that it was not terribly crowded despite the unseasonably warm weather. The lights were pretty and the mansion was nicely decorated as well. The lighted trail is fairly short, but really has some nice features, There were a lot of places to buy food and beverages; while we didn't partake in any, the prices seemed reasonable. The ice skating rink seemed to be included if people brought their own skates. We are keeping this light display on the list for future years!

The early childhood programs hosted by Mrs. Roman are fantastic. My daughter looks forward to the Sprouts class and the holiday programs.

Beautiful park. $5.00 parking fee. I was disappointed because the Robert McCormick house is under construction.

Nice place to bring kids. The tanks on display are always a hit with kids, as they can climb on them. Nice areas for photos too.

Anyone been to the Christmas light Ang cocktail walk? Was it worth it?

When are the movies in the park and where do I find the name of the movie playing?

I believe they are on Thursday nights in the Summer, but check their website for details. If you go to their Events page, https://cantigny.org/events/ you can select the month & then search for the word movie.

Ukiyo-e means "pictures of the floating world," and this art style features scenes from everyday 17th - 19th-century Japan, like entertainment, kabuki, geisha, etc. This style had an impact on the Impressionists like Van Gogh. This exhibition has the debut of the Chiossone Collection, 53 paintings and woodblock prints of ukiyo-e. Prior to this exhibit, the only ukiyo-e artwork that I would have been familiar with is the famous "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai. But this exhibit "rides the wave," creating an immersive and multifaceted experience. Not only do you learn about other artists and their works, you can see original paintings and prints, walk-through an Edo-era street, visit an immersive manga/anime exhibit in "2D", make your own print, visit a garden and more. It was a little confusing how to enter the the historical exhibit (we weren't the only ones), but the info is presented in a very approachable way. That Hokusai, what a character -- He changed his name 30 times, He hated to clean so when his living quarters were messy -- he moved -- 93 times! The manga/anime exhibit was very fun -- with the 2D artwork panels created by the 2D restauranteurs. I was also impressed by the many events planned throughout DuPage county -- so many towns participating. The gift shop items were great! The only thing -- we came on a weekday and only ramen and hotdogs were available -- other items available on the weekend. In any case, I was quite impressed with the exhibit -- and I would recommend it for all ages.

It's free (donations happily accepted). This was perhaps a stop on the underground railroad, though there's no proof. Visit is on your own, and a couple of rooms are given over to administrative purposes. Check out a small selection of items that are marked "please touch" (notably some items in the kitchen, such as the irons heated on the stove during the period; a period corset; etc.). The stereopticons (they have 2) are not included in "please touch" and are positioned so you can't actually use them, which is frustrating (hoping they'll buy a stand). In a hallway upstairs are photos and capsule bios of some noted DG citizens; I had no idea noted Egyptologist Henry Breasted had a connection. Signage is somewhat lacking, though there are small cards in most rooms asking kids "can you find {list of items}?" which will help you find some things. The barn includes an early/midcentury fire truck lovingly restored, with displays on the 1976 Bicentennial painted fire hydrants; a beloved firefighter who dressed as a clown to teach kids about fire safety. The temporary exhibit on travel was interesting, and the staff was preparing for a "Victorian dinner." Overall, worth a look if you have an interest in local history or the lives and possessions of the Victorian well-to-do. Did I mention it's free?

The curator clearly pours her heart and soul into curating every aspect of the museum, from the objects in the house to information about the people who walked its walls. We even walked through the cellar where the family hid people for the Underground Railroad. The long history of the house is imbued with mysteries and surprising details about how people used to live... paintings hidden in the walls, a wife's letters kept from past suitors, a wreath of faux flowers made from feathers... we were absolutely floored. We spent over an hour learning so much about American history through the prism of this fascinating house. Bravo!

There are about 10-11 rooms, and apparently each season they have a theme; this year's is "Vacations We Have Taken," so the rooms are full of souvenirs from various 1890-1920s destinations. This house museum is more modern than most of the others in the area; the kitchen downstairs is set to about 1941 (which is still a lot more primitive than I had expected). Most of the people living in the house were women; there is a lot of lacework (doilies; tatting framed on the wall; fancy edges on the tablecloth and towels) and some really lovely beaded purses laid out in the rooms upstairs (some in-progress beadwork is included in the upstairs sewing room). The bedrooms are completely roped off, so you'll get a better view of the other rooms which have at least some access. The house is renowned for its garden; apparently the West Chicago Garden Club was brought back into existence to bring it to its original glory, which they've certainly done. Just know that you have to pay whatever the current parking fee is for the park to even be able to get in and see the museum (I wonder how they'd handle it if you just walked in to the park?). That fee changes seasonally. When I went in late spring, it was a beautiful day and they were charging $15 per car. There seems to be a lot of other activities to do at the park, but I had limited time, so I only went to the museum (walking through the tank park first). The museum is free. On entering the museum, I went to the left, which is a series of displays about more modern warfighters (Vietnam to current). It was good, but my pro tip is to go to the right first. This was an amazing recreation of WWII battle scenes with an extraordinary amount of detail. The park immediately in front of the museum has a variety of tanks and, surprisingly, they let you climb on them. I saw many kids and adults taking photo ops on the tanks.

I would recommend going to the visitors center as a first stop (north parking lot), then make your way to the museum (South Park lot). The museum is sectioned into two parts: WWI, WWII and Vietnam eras and a "modern" section of the 1ID's recent involvements. This museum was very interesting and it was clear that there is a lot of attention to detail in this immersive experience. The grounds were well taken care of and the bathrooms were clean. While there I saw families and people of all ages enjoying the space and learning about the history of the 1ID. Outside of the museum is also steel from the World Trade Center (9/11). Very informative and great way to spend an afternoon.
