I found Longview thru a farm-to-consumer website while looking for healthy, local sources for meat…read moreand produce. Longview farm is not a CSA, you get to pick what items you want in your "basket". They grow delicious food slowly - heirloom tomatoes, lettuce greens, eggs fro hens on pasture, grass fed beef and heritage Berkshire pork. You can also visit the farm if you contact them! Check out where your meat is coming from, Portlandia style! They do not have a farm stand. Instead they deliver to customers in DC and locally. They use non GMO corn feed. They do not use pesticides nor herbicides, so it is all very labor intensive and grown very slowly. Penelope is the main person that answers email inquiries, she is warm, friendly and helpful! We just got our first delivery of leaf lard (I was super interested in this after reading about it - old timey pastry pork fat before Crisco became the norm), bacon, tomatoes, basil, shallots, and eggs. Everything looks like it came out of a Edible Magazine catalog showcasing farm gourmet! They deliver to Capitol Hill, Palisades, Cleveland Park, downtown DC, Smithsonian, and locally near the farm. They were recognized by Slow Food DC and Southern Maryland Meats. ---Information from a farm directory--- At Longview Farm, 20 miles south of the US capitol, we raise grass finished beef, pastured hens for eggs, Berkshire heritage pork, heirloom tomatoes, and salad greens. All our animals are raised without antibiotics, hormones, animal by products or growth supplements. We practice natural, sustainable and humane farming but are not certified organic. Our Angus cows are drug-free, grass fed/finished, born and bred on the farm. Rotationally grazed, the herd moves to fresh grass twice a day during the growing season. Our heritage Berkshire pigs are rotated through oak, hickory and poplar woods to forage and root for grubs, acorns, etc. Our meat is USDA processed. Our hens move each day to fresh pasture. Feeds for our pigs and chickens are freshly ground at an Amish feed mill with non GMO corn. Our vegetables are grown naturally without chemicals. Heirloom tomatoes are fragile, but incomparably delicious with evocative names - Heart of Compassion, Marianne, Cherokee Purple... In addition to growing delicious food, Longview Farm is committed to protecting open space and natural habitat in suburbanizing Prince Georges County. The woods and pastures sequester carbon, and the farming practices replenish the soil.

The market is pretty bare bones with two vegatable/fruit producers, a bakery, and a meat stand but there are a few exciting vendors that sell things like homemade fudge, juice, bbq and macarons. The two most personable vendors that I found at the market were Cascade Beverage Company which sold iced tea and the most amazing nitro kombucha that I've ever tried. At $12 for an entire growler, it's a steal! I also really enjoyed speaking to the owner of Liberty Farms of Virginia and his daughters who sold turkey, duck and chicken eggs in the most amazing assortment of beautiful colors. You can tell that they were a real family owned business and they were passionate about their product. You also get 25 cents off your purchase if you recycle an egg carton with them!

Also a very good selection of jellies and jams, plus baked goods, ice cream and gelato, and sausage. I was very pleased with Lola's Kusina, a food truck with a number of tasty selections. I particularly like the curry empanadas and the blueberry lumpias in addition to the people who run it: Lola and Rich, and especially Terry, whose people skills are superb. The two women who run the market, Samantha and Molly, are exceedingly pleasant. It's open from 10 until 2 on Saturdays; I'm not sure when it starts in the spring, but I know that the market ends for the year pretty late -- mid-December.

While the market is on the small side, they maximize space and have quite a few vendors and plenty of parking. Despite being able to conduct a rather brisk walkthrough of the market, I was also able to pick up several items along the way before I headed to another market. Overall, if you're in the area this market is worth a visit. It's also worth considering if you're not in the area but keeping in mind that it's small would be prudent.

Pretty respectable-sized establishment! There were a lot of vendors selling things that were not food/produce. I think I saw more people selling soaps, creams, and body butter than any other product. Great selection to choose from if that's what you're looking for. I ended up having a nice chat with one of the guys who had a nice variety of soaps both scented and unscented. Several vendors were selling potted plants. I imagine the produce stands are more represented in the peak of summer and fall. There were a few when we went (early May) selling some cabbages and other leafy greens as well as some apples and root veggies. At the one end of the parking lot were several trucks hawking food and drinks. I had been told to look for a donut truck, but none to be found the day we went. There was one selling coffees, another selling cold-pressed juices, and another selling pizzas. Bonus: there is a port-a-potty available to all. I've been to bigger markets without one and I think it's brilliant that one is available.

When you arrive, it is off a main road, so you can drive by it rather quickly. I had to use my navigation system because that is exactly what I would have done HAHA! There is so much to look at ranging from the variety of seasonal plants, herbs, flowers, and etc.! They also have gardening equipment, soil, and produce in their buildings that they have. Personally, I was more surprised to see that they had duck eggs, yogurt, and different cheeses. I have not come across these items at a produce stand before, so do not judge me (I definitely plan to purchase the duck eggs at some point in time). In addition to all their fresh items and produce, they also had interesting items such as their syrups (i.e., peaches and cream, maple, cinnamon roll (I could be wrong about that one) that can be used for a variety of food items such as pancakes, in yogurt, and waffles. Other items such as bacon ketchup, applesauces, butters, jellies, salsas, and more lined the walls of the store. I took a particular interest in their wildflower honey which is produced locally. The sign says to use it daily to help build your immune system against seasonal allergies. Honey, I I have allergies all year round, so you know I bought that (pun intended ). I am already on day two and I recognize a decrease in my allergy symptoms already! I also bought a rosemary plant that I will be using for other creations. The total price for the honey and rosemary plan came to about $25 and some change. Considering what I am using these items for, it was worth it. With the service being great and the products being of great quality, I will be returning for sure! P.S. - There are also have some awesome animals that you might hear during your time there! Also, this place is kid friendly as well. They have so much to offer to their customers, so I would suggest checking out their website for more information!

When I arrived, the first two people I encountered provided positive customer service, including taking me to the location where the locally-sourced honey is situated in the store (not just pointing to the general area). I really appreciated that. The other thing I found helpful was that when a team member didn't have an answer to my question, they were willing to defer to a team member who had more knowledge about what I was looking for. This is where Veronica or Victoria (I'm not quite sure of her name, other than the fact that it begin with a V) comes into frame. She provided really good and useful information in addition to asking really good questions. She also seemed to be sympathetic to the fact that I was not feeling well and was looking for something to help in the healing process. We need more of this in the world. Care and concern for humankind seems to be lacking here lately. If you are looking for locally-sourced honey and you live or work in VA, don't hesitate to stop by Nalls Produce! Happy shopping! Oops! One more note ; I'm not too sure Nalls is located in Alexandria as it states when you visit the website. After completing a pretty long day at work in Arlington, I didn't think a drive out to Alexandria (after primary rush time), would be so bad. But, the drive was a little further than expected. Because I'm not a Virginia native, I could be incorrect in my thought process. But Nalls Produce is not located in Alexandria, it is located in Franconia. That's not even Alexandria County...it's actually Fairfax County. Either way, it was worth the drive because I was able to find what I was looking for. However, had I known the drive would take it as long as it did, I would've probably done it on an early Saturday morning and spent a little more time to explore all of the other interesting items I saw. By the way, it looks like they do a monthly newsletter that highlights some great information for the upcoming month.
