After several years of unsuccessfully trying to start my vegetable garden from seeds, I'm now a convert to Nalls' seedlings, and I especially love getting seedlings of lettuce and other greens here in the early spring. Last year I bought some watercress and mustard greens, which tickled my itch to try new-to-me traditional vegetables. If you're getting plants here, check out the Budding Gardeners Facebook group run by Nalls. You can get support and advice on your plants after you get them in the ground without going back to the store. I'll also add that every Nalls employee I've interacted with, including all the young seasonal employees, have been truly so nice. A+ hiring, right here. Nalls is also a great place to get some native plants, such as Virginia bluebells. However, they still stock some nasty invasives, such as vinca. I'm currently battling long-standing patches of vinca and English ivy in my yard and am surprised and sad that otherwise reliable nurseries still stock them. Get rid of those, and I'll happily give y'all 5 stars.

And, in this economy, there is no reason to shop at any other grocery store in the DMV. Aldi does not price gouge unlike other chain grocers. Their stores are clean, well organized, well stocked, the selection is amazing, there are many high quality items including organic & grass fed, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Shout out to one of the stockers for his assistance today, and the sweet cashier, Lucretia. She made checkout a breeze and was really nice and had a big smile on her face. I believe that many of the competitors are 75% hype and "marketing"; you can literally get many of the same things at Aldi for a fraction of the cost of what you'd pay at the fancy chains, e.g., amazing cheeses, quality breads, meats, produce, etc. Over the years I've shopped at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Mom's, Natural Grocers (west coast), Sprouts, Wegman's, Harris Teeter, etc., and these stores can't compare to Aldi. When I read the labels for many things I'd normally buy elsewhere, there isn't a huge difference. The fact that I can get most of what I need at Aldi makes it worth the trip and I don't mind going to another store to fill any voids. There is ample parking in their lot, and be sure to bring a quarter for the shopping cart (you get it back when you return it). Also, bring your own bags.

I came here the weekend before Tet (Vietnamese New Year), so of course it was packed with red envelopes, incense sticks, watermelon seeds, and candied goodness left and right. Unfortunately being a small shop, quantities were limited, and I watched 3 Viet women fight over the last of the bouquets of yellow flowers for their Tet celebration. Overall, this shop has your basic essentials to make all your favorite vietnamese dishes. I picked up some pho noodles, rice, some cooking sauces, herbs/veggies, and a few other things. Prices are unforgiving as a can of imitation meat I usually buy for $1.50 in CA sells for $2.50 here. I also couldn't find 3 Ladies Brand rice (boooo!), or my favorite brand of broth or ramen. But price and brands aside (I can be picky), I was able to find ingredients to cook what I wanted, and that made me happy. And if anyone cares, YES! I also was able to pick up some supplies to successfully celebrate Tet 3000 miles away from home!
