They must have 6 picnic benches with most of them in the shade which is very beneficial. Also have plenty of park benches too. The grass area is also very nice. It's not huge but enough for kids to run around and have a good time. The big toy is aged, but still very nice and they have toddler swings. Yes, the beach isn't large, as it is the same size as it was 30 years ago. They have the are roped off. There is plenty of beach are for kids to play in the sand. There are life guards there too...

Colts State Park is an amazing waterfront park in Bristol, Rhode Island. It's a little drive…read moresoutheast of Providence or north of Newport, but worth a visit if you like wildlife and views of the New England waterfront. There is one paid parking area closest to the beach, volleyball nets, and covered picnic tables, but there's plenty of free parking lots throughout the rest of the park. The waterfront areas include a fishing pier and plenty of benches. The lots are thoughtfully laid out along the walking/biking paths, with plenty of scattered picnic tables. Wildlife is abundant here as we saw loads of geese and quite a few seagulls. Some of the areas of the park are under maintenance and the benches are a bit rusted out, but these minor things didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of Colt State Park, so look forward to returning here.

Between walking around the grounds and a two-hour guided truck tour, there is plenty to see and do. There are a lot of animals on the refuge that seem to have acclimated to tourism. If you're interested in taking pictures of, say, baby seagulls and deer, you'd definitely be able to. The truck tour brings you out to a historic lighthouse that is well maintained, accessible and still active after over a century. You'll learn a great deal of history from signage within the lighthouse, as well as your tour guide. For a group of four, this was an excellent trip. If you're a Trustee member (basically a donor to the properties maintained by the Trustees on Martha's Vineyard), you'll get an excellent deal on the tour here.

A beach for a long…read morewalk A beach can't get any better than this. Even in the summer you can find a place all to your own and in the off season walk for miles and not see another person. The best way is to bike out to the Chappy ferry and ride east to the beach. Can't really ride in the heavy sand but you can park your bike and walk along the ocean. A great walk is north out to the Cape Pogue Lighthouse. The lighthouse is 55 feet tall and constructed in 1893. Because of the wild and exposed a lighthouse out here has been either rebuilt or moved at least nine times. Getting out here is the problem and you either need a four wheel vehicle and a permit or walk. It's about 5 miles, so it's a pretty good hike in the sand, and you have to bring your own water because there's nothing out there, But that's the whole point. You have a piece of paradise all to yourself. Can't think of a better way to spend a day.

We always visit Spohr Gardens when we are in Falmouth. It was almost our next door neighbor when…read morewe lived there. In fact Mr. Spohr was just building it then and we always stopped by to chat with him. He really enjoyed showing off his great finds to our 1-1/2 year old son who was totally engaged in what he was doing with these huge stones and iron ships' parts. For historical context, that son is now 47 years old and has come back repeatedly through his childhood and adulthood, originally with us but also on his own. His younger brother did not have the opportunity to see it then as I was only pregnant with him at the time, but he has been back with us over the years and has learned to love it too. But he has not had the opportunity to visit that area since he was finished with college and left the east coast permanently. The Gardens were left to a trust by Charles Spohr's will and the Town of Falmouth and the Trust still protect it and still use it for education. It supports itself with donations and allowing events like weddings to take place on the premises. The walk along the path on the shore of Oyster Pond is truly beautiful all times of year. The trees surrounding it in color in the fall, the swans on the lake in summer, the blooming flowers like we saw this August, are all magnificent. The anchors, the bollards, the grist stones laid out through the place, are so interesting that I still take the same pictures every time I can come here. The old dock where our son used to toss pebbles into the pond has been refurbished several times over the years and recently was rebuilt to a higher safety standard to be a perfect wedding setting. I never tire of visiting. It is free to walk in but it's nice to leave a donation by the entrance. Parking is very limited but there is a small lot and a few spaces along the residential street.
