Successfully passed the Canine Good Citizen with Julie in January 2023.
    Michelle M.

We have been utilizing Julie's services for about 3 years. She was referred to us by a friend who had been very happy with the results she achieved with her dog. I first hired Julie to train my daughter's Rottweiler that had a lot of energy and not much direction. The Rottie spent three weeks with Julie and came back an entirely different dog. After the in-board training, Julie has gone above and beyond to provide ongoing support for my daughter who has little ones at home. I recently worked with Julie to pass the Canine Good Citizen and Love on a Leash evaluation for my 1 year old Retriever. I have always found Julie to be professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to understand her directions. She promptly responds to your communications and is passionate about setting you up for success. I would highly recommend Canine Julz as your go to for a top notch certified dog trainer.

CanineJulz helped us learn to communicate effectively with our dog. At just two years old, our rescue pup developed some serious anxiety and became territorial, especially around kids. It was causing a great deal of stress in our home. CanineJulz assured us that her approach to dog training would teach him coping strategies to help ease his anxiety and allow us to get our sweet, loving pup back to feeling comfortable in social situations. She did just that! CanineJulz is an excellent communicator, is timely and responsive, she makes it a priority to hear the unique needs of her clients. She taught us how to maintain consistent boundaries with our dog so that he knows what's expected of his behavior. CanineJulz took our training sessions to park playgrounds, dog parks, farmers markets, and along the board walk at the coast- all the while teaching us how to reinforce his good behavior and maintain consistent communication with him in any environment. She worked with every member of our family so that we are all well educated in the training techniques. Keeping us all on the same page in how we interact with our dog. We are now comfortable and confident in our ability to take him anywhere and know he'll be a good, social pup. His transformation has been a godsend and we are so incredibly grateful for CanineJulz and her influence in our lives!

We rescued a Pomeranian Chihuahua mix a few months ago and new immediately he needed a bit of puppy training to keep him from terrorizing our children. Julie did a great job helping us develop the tools to train a puppy. She spent one and one time with us and our children, making sure we were all on the same page on how best to train our new puppy. She is super fun to work with, I would highly recommend hiring Julie if you are having behavior issues with your animal.

Julie has trained both of my dogs. I can't say enough good things about her style, the way she trains , the confidence she has built in both my dogs, and just the overall care she takes with truly striking a balance between training and giving them praise when they need it. There is nobody else I will trust to train my dogs.

Sailor after earning her AKC Good Citizen Certificate!

This is the first time utilizing Julie's services but it won't be the last! She was referred to us by our former trainer to continue our dog's progress from well trained, loose leashed fur baby which is a joy to take to the park, restaurants, and outings, to therapy dog! With Julie's help, Sailor earned her AKC Good Citizen certification (yep, our Tijuana rescue now has credentials!) and is onto the next step in becoming a therapy dog who can work in hospitals and with veterans (besides the owner/mom) to make everyday a little calmer, kinder and gentler. Many thanks for the communication and helping us to continue our progress!

Julie is the BEST! The way she works with the dogs is incredible and is more than willing to work with the owner to see desired behavior you'd like from your pup. Many trainers I've spoken with or worked with in the past are very "all or nothing" telling me i can never allow my dog on the bed and/or couch however i didn't want my dog to NEVER be allowed up on the couch/bed. Julie was more than happy to work with us on what we did and did not want my pup doing as a first time dog mom, i was very nervous sending my dog off to camp/him coming back with a different personality. But Julie loved my guy as if he was one of her own pups, and was sure to send progress reports just so i could see his face :) I will definitely be sending any and all future pups in my life to CanineJulz & would highly recommend to family/friends.

Julie saved our rescue dog's life! She bridges the language gap, helps human and dog communicate effectively and build trust. So important for our rescue dog. We cycled through five trainers before meeting Julie. Two of the trainers recommended we give our dog tranquilizer meds for the rest of his life (one night he barked for 3 hours straight)! We were at the end of our patience and considered giving our dog back to the rescue. Julie changed everything. She uses many different styles tailored to a dog's needs. Our dog is a mutt but has a lot of working dog breed in him, she recognized this and set out training that changed him and us. Now he is well adjusted, quiet in the home and no long dog reactive on leash (I almost forget how insane he used to be!). It is amazing. We highly recommend Julie & Canine Julz!

    A New Finley!

Our 3rd rescue dog proved much more of a challenge than 1st two. 'Finn' is a very smart, handsome dog who had spent time on the streets in Thailand. We had to teach him to play, to accept affection - this poor boy had no childhood, he was raised as a working dog. We used our limited skills socializing and loving him for 2 years, but then we turned to CanineJulz as both people and dog agression we're still there. Julie home evaluated Finn and recommended her 6wk, immersive camp at her facility for him. The 6 weeks of total separation was very difficult (for us!). But, Julie gave us constant progress updates; from establishing trust, to transforming Finn in stages into a more relaxed 'pet'(and let us Zoom w him!). This was followed by (5) one hr sessions with us, at our home. We were also given clear, written instructions/tools, to reinforce her training each day- key for any successful behavior modif. Happy to say Finn is a different dog and he, like us, have a forever friend in 'Aunt' Julie. We have since boarded him with her on a few trip weekends.....which they both seem to appreciate! CanineJulz was well worth the money spent.

Julie is amazing! I rescued my dog Nikona at about 10 months. She had been a stray her whole life (we think) and was extremely fearful of EVERYTHING, which quickly turned into reactive. She would lunge at dogs and people and I couldn't have guests at home. She was always smart and sweet towards the family, but no strangers. I had come to terms that my dog was just not a normal dog and that I would never be able to enjoy certain things with her, and I was ok with that. It has now been 2.5 years since we met Julie and she's done three bootcamps/retreats with her. I can honestly say that she is a different dog!! With Julie's help Nikona (5 years old) can now be off leash and listen reliably. She is still shy, but warms up quickly to new dogs and people. Her obedience always was great, but the reactivity was a big problem. Not any more! Seriously, Julie changed our lives. Now Nikona is living her best life! I can't say thank you enough! And for those with a difficult pup, be patient and find the right trainer. It has been the most rewarding experience for us.

Our dog came back calm, orderly, and OBEDIENT! After a month long stay and many many wonderful updates multiple times per week we are confident he has made at least a 90% improvement on his bad behaviors and is able to calmly behave not only around us but his reactivity to other dogs has made a tremendous improvement. Shannon and Sierra are STELLAR! I'd also like to mention they did a home drop off for us (since I'm still heavily pregnant) and spent over an HOUR with my husband and I going over all of the new things he has learned + even took a walk with us in the neighborhood to address another issue we had with reactivity. We were left with a sheet of all his new & enforced behaviors to keep track of along with super chewer toys and treats. Bark Busters came to us highly recommended. After some research and reviewing Ted Talk and…read morearticles, I signed up our two rescue mix breed ~20lb boys. We are grateful to James of BB who placed us with Jenna. Our boys issues: high reactivity outside, especially other dogs, and inside, door bell, ring cameras, etc. Coupled with greetings by jumping and owning the house. Jenna set us on a path of activities for inside and was incredibly patient letting me share and ask questions, learning constantly. As we fine-tuned and we all got more comfortable we moved our training to outside. The methodology used is absolutely amazing and, I dare say, short of a miracle. We practice regularly and introduce the boys to different circumstances. All that food luring and positive food reinforcement training certainly has its place but only the techniques of BB with Jenna has helped our boys become trusting, comfortable, and happy. Here I thought I had to scan the horizon constantly to be aware of incoming dogs to prepare myself to hide behind a car or go in the corner behind garbage cans to get maximum distance. Not true. I walk no longer with my head on a lazy susan. We all are forever grateful. Our boys can lead richer more social lives. Thank you!!!

I'm updating my original 6-month review now that it has been a full year since we hired Bark…read moreBusters to help with our rescue dog Mimi. As first-time dog owners, the early support really did help us. Having someone we could call during those overwhelming first months was a relief. Over time, though, I realized I was hoping the training would shift toward more positive reinforcement. The constant, harsher corrections worked at first but eventually didn't seem effective anymore and started affecting my relationship with Mimi. I noticed this during a family trip where Mimi, who is usually fearful of strangers, bonded more easily with my husband and his family. She gravitated toward them when scared, and I realized it might be because they weren't following the correction-heavy approach, while I was. I also asked for help with Mimi's fear and reactivity toward other dogs, but was told they didn't have dogs available for training and that I would need to bring a calm, socialized dog myself. As a non-trainer, that was very hard, but we tried by traveling many hours to introduce her to my husband's family dog. The experience ended up being chaotic since the family didn't fully understand what the process required, and new people and dogs kept appearing even though Mimi wasn't ready. Her reactivity came back in that environment, which made me feel like the training had only put a bandaid on deeper fear issues. Maybe I should have clarified expectations better from the start, but with a high-need dog and being new to all of this, I didn't know what to expect. Since then, we've switched to a positive reinforcement trainer who organizes structured group activities. Mimi is still scared of bigger dogs and can still be reactive, but she's improving slowly and has been able to meet a few smaller dogs. She's also still fearful of people, but she nips a lot less now, so progress is happening. Overall, Bark Busters helped us in the beginning, but long-term we found that a different, more positive approach has been a better fit for Mimi.

We've had no out-of-control barking incidents; he can be tethered and remain quiet. He's very good on walks, moving from "heel" to "break" and back to "heel" again. He's very responsive to the "off" command, which we use primarily to keep him off the furniture and out of the kitchen. Last week we had friends over for dinner and after his initial excitement he was a good boy, lying nearby content and chewing on a bone. We even attended the Humane Society Walk for Animals at Kit Carson Park, and with hundreds of dogs and people and non-stop activities, he was again a very well-behaved boy. We are so appreciative of the work that Michelle did with Monty. He is now the dog we always hoped he would be - happy, well-behaved, and living his best life!

I cannot recommend Nikki enough when it comes to dog training. Before I started training with…read moreNikki, I was seriously considering rehoming (giving back to the original rescue) my dog as I felt ill-equipped and completely lost with his behaviors. I genuinely believe that if it wasn't for Nikki, my dog would likely not be alive right now as he probably would have been marked for behavioral euthanasia. Nikki saved my mental health and saved my dog Waldo. I hold immense gratitude for all of the help she has provided us. Nikki exemplifies what it means to be an expert in the field: her methods are evidence-based & she is always staying up-to-date with the most relevant information available. I found Nikki when researching private agility lessons for my reactive dog. While I never had any intentions of performing, I knew that my high-energy dog, Waldo, would benefit greatly from learning new experiences and confidence building. The first time Waldo and I met Nikki, I knew I wanted to work with her. She wasn't phased by his loud barking or lunging. Nikki immediately started guiding me on ways I can change my posture & breathing as well as informing me what Waldo's body language was telling her. After just one session, we discovered his reactive behaviors were actually fear-based (not solely aggression-based as other trainers had led me to believe). Then came the hard part: the (unintentional) reinforcement of these behaviors that I had caused due to my own ignorance. Nikki was realistic about progress and the time it would take. She won't lie or cut corners to tell you what you want to hear. It was her honesty and humility that had me sold. I only saw Nikki once a week with Waldo, but after working with her for almost 2 years we saw SO much progress. Waldo is much more confident in high-stress situations. I have a full tool kit of tricks I can use inside as well as outside the house. The training never stops when you leave the session! Nikki taught me so much about reactivity & threshold. That training has to happen when they are below threshold!! She doesn't assign morality to dogs. I remember saying "Waldo is a bad dog and I don't know what to do with him" and she gently corrected me by saying "Waldo is not a bad dog, he is A DOG and he is scared. What we have to do is show him that he doesn't have to be scared and that takes time & trust." We were able to slowly work our way up to having Nikki approach Waldo without a fearful response. And eventually even had Waldo take treats from her hand and respond to her giving him commands. AND THEN, we were able to have Waldo in the same space as Nikki's dog Charm. Charm was so unbothered by Waldo's barking it was honestly a comedic relief. Charm lives up to her name. She is a beautiful, smart and oh-so sweet dog. Just having neutral // positive interactions around another dog was vital to Waldo's success and confidence building. Also, knowing that Nikki trusted me and Waldo to be able to interact with Charm after we spent so much time in 1:1 training helped MY confidence as well. I learned sooo much from Nikki, I could probably write a book just singing her praises. While I was devastated when I found out she was moving, knowing that she is going to continue educating dog owners and offering these valuable training lessons helped lessen the tears. Everyone in my life that knows Waldo has seen long-lasting, impactful changes in his behavior. And all of the praise goes to Nikki and her techniques! Come to Nikki with an open-mind and a willingness to learn. She very well could change your life for the better, the way that she did mine (and Waldo's!).
