Located on Grandin Road, next to the Post Office, and inside the left side of a beautiful white Victorian house, Canale's Ham & BBQ is a local family business run by a husband and wife who love to cook everything BBQ. They've been opened for over five years now and very popular among the Grandin Village community. Although it has many number of steps to reach the entrance of the restaurant, it also has a wooden handicap ramp on the left side of the large house for the convenience of all. Beyond the wooden front porch is also a wooden patio with a seating area with tables and chairs to be able to dine outside in good weather. The large, white, Victorian house, has other small businesses inside but this restaurant seems to be the largest of them all. After one enters the main door of the house, immediately on the left is another door and the entrance of the small yet cozy restaurant. They have their Hours of Operation posted on the front window and on their website online, but unfortunately their closing time is determined by when they run out of their Pulled Pork which is cooked fresh daily. So before going to dine there they advise to give them a call to see around what time they will be closing that day. And that is precisely what I did, with full knowledge that the positive side of this little inconvenience meant that their food would always be fresh. They also are very well known for making all of their BBQ sauces in-house. When one arrives and walks in, the living room of the beautifully renovated Victorian house with lovely hardwood floors is used as the dining room with a few tables and chairs, and an area with two comfortable seats and a coffee table used mainly for customers who order to go to have a seat and wait for their orders to be prepared. In the next room there is a U shaped counter with high chairs in the shape of a bar where customers can also dine there and drink a beer with their meal. This counter also serves as the cashier station, where one goes to pay when they're finished eating. The decoration of the place has two large wide screen TVs, some artworks with chicken, pork, and beef motifs, and many Spirts memorabilia hanged from the walls of the place. It also has an Iced Water station inside the bar area for one to help themselves as well as the menu is also located on one of the walls there. The owner is very welcoming and friendly and greeted me with a warm greeting when he found out that this was my first time visiting and eating there. He took my order and had me take a seat at one of the tables in the dining room. To drink I ordered an Iced Sweet Tea. And to eat I ordered "The House Favorite" : Fresh Pulled Pork BBQ, on a plate with Slaw and Fries. All the prices were very reasonable and the portions were large; especially the Pulled Pork BBQ and Fries, and the dessert at the end which was a freshly made Boston Cream Cake. Everything tasted amazingly delicious, especially the top quality Pulled Pork with the Red BBQ sauce. Everyone eating at the counter were very friendly as well and the ambiance felt very comfortable and relaxed. I highly recommend this local, BBQ Family Business. My husband read a review, and we decided to take some friends from out of town. We struck out. They do close whenever they sell out. The following Saturday we went early--Home Run! The bbq is great. There are several sauces to choose from. We've been back since; once I find something I like I stick with it, so it's been bbq all the way. However, I am going to try the smoked baloney, and a piece of the delicious looking cake. The service is terrific and very friendly. You can dine inside or out on the porch. Ok so this place must be fairly new because it wasn't even on yelp but it is a good lunch spot. The stag were all friendly and courteous and quit attentive. The music was soft and low and soothing while I ate my delicious lunch. The prices are very reasonable for the portion size and as I have already stated the food was delicious. If you like Carolina mustard slaw then you have to visit because this place has some fine slaw. I had the pulled pork sandwich the red BBQ sauce and I was very pleased with my meal. That is saying something coming from a Tennessee boy Who grew up eating Memphis BBQ. Amazing! I lived in Atlanta for 7 years, however, didn't have the quality of BBQ I had here. Good cuts of meat, along with a homemade rub and some excellent flavors. Ample portions. The side of pinto beans was surprisingly good. There's a unique combination of vegetables and seasonings that make it far above the usual servings of beans. Highly recommended. read more

"Get the smash burger!", she said. "They're so good!!!". So I get the smash burger. The order taker did not make the smash burger seem like a good choice. I ordered it anyway. It was so plain. Stayed away for months. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. The order taker claimed that was a bad choice. I insisted but they continued to reject my order. So I purchased a ham and cheese sandwich. I was instructed to retrieve it from the refrigerator in a corner. I did. It was about $4. It was ok. I really think they should try making grilled cheese sandwiches. read more

A delicious little eatery tucked into an historic building. I had heard good things about their bbq and was not disappointed at all. Friendly staff and a good flow of customers picking up and eating in at the shop. Tried a sampler with smoked sliced ham, smoked sliced turkey and smoked pulled pork with a side of pinto beans. All was delicious, but the pulled pork was fantastic. The house made sauces were excellent. As I was ordering, I also noticed that they have a smoked fried bologna sandwich so I got that as well. Loved it! Fried bologna is usually pretty easy to do, but the thick cut style with a good smoke on the bologna just makes the sandwich so much better. An excellent lunch time treat of good local bbq. Their supply of items is totally dependent on their volume for the day. So their menu changes as they run out of items. That means go early and get your bbq fix. read more

My wife saw the reviews online while driving south on Route 81. So happy we traveled off the beaten path to grab lunch. It was absolutely outstanding - the smoked ham and turkey was probably the best tasting we have ever had. But we were lucky to get the last piece of a strawberry cake that was a 10+. I thought the food was outstanding! I had a very generous portion of pulled pork on a sandwich. The accompanying BBQ sauce was not thick which I love. It had a little sweetness and heat. Coleslaw and Mac and Cheese were perfect. I love the use of Paccheri millerighe or Rigatoni type pasta in the Mac and Cheese. Lovely, cheesy goodness! I stopped by Canales several times now and had consistent awesome BBQ and meals, the group is always friendly and a home town atmosphere. The Mac and Cheese is to die for!! The Pulled Pork Egg rolls that they cook are fantastic!! If your a home town Roanoker or from out of town passing through you have to come in and enjoy the genuine friendly family atmosphere. Pork Rinds are my favorite take home. And there great for a low carb diet!! Always an inviting atmosphere to have a beer and watch some college games on the weekends. Wow! Outrageously delicious! We had lunch at Canale's and highly recommend it. The building is a cool historic Roanoke place, nice outside seating and roomy inside seating. By far the best wings in the Roanoke Valley, ultra crispy, and so sticky with the sweet chili sauce. My wife and daughter had a pulled pork sandwich that they said was to die for. My wife made me try it, and it was the juiciest and tenderest, and tastiest pulled pork I have had other than my own. My grand daughter had Chicken tenderloins and fries and asked me why we have never eaten there before. The moral of this story, get on over to Canale's and enjoy personal service and superior food. I have traveled to 48 states and 7 countries and have always been a foodie. I found this hidden gem and I took my time asked questions and requested there top seller dish. I received a large portion of pulled pork on a bun with slaw. I also requested corn bread and a new special (steak fries). The pork was absolutely perfect. Moist and well seasoned. I asked to try all sauces. Found that all the sauces were made fresh. The sauces consist of a horseradish white sauce, a sweet and tangy mustard, sweet and spicy red sauce, and flavorful vinegar. All of them were awesome after trying all of them the mustard and vinager were banging when mixed together. The slaw was packed with flavor. My wife doesnt like slaw but she liked theirs. She hates mustard and they made her a believer. The steak fries were cooked properly and seasoned properly with a great crunch and fluffy center.The resturaunt had a nice feel as soon as you walk in. The music was quiet and relaxing, chairs comfortable, room had great flow with a welcoming environment. At the end of my experience I was able to purchase 5 lbs of pulled pork to take home along with sauces and slaw. This was a very enjoyable and satisfying lunch for me and my wife. We visited Canale's Ham & BBQ last night for a wonderful dinner! Not only was it great to see our friends Laura and George who are responsible for opening this delightful restaurant, we left feeling as if we had just had a marvelous home cooked BBQ dinner! Our pulled pork sandwiches were loaded with flavorful, perfectly cooked lean meat. The homemade slaw and our choice of homemade red sauce were perfect additions! I also tried the White Bean Chicken Chili as a side and was delighted! Dessert was a perfectly homemade banana pudding created by Laura! We felt as though we had been invited to dinner at the Canale's and treated to a delicious homemade feast! Pricing is more than reasonable! The location on Grandin is very casual and comfortable suitable for all ages. We also noticed a brisk carry out business even at the end of the day.
